Would only come back for the charbroiled oysters . The fried oyster sandwich was way too saucy and barely had any oysters inside. The complimentary bread pudding for dessert was yummy, but everything else was pretty mid. We didn't enjoy the dips that came with the seafood tower, though the crackers had great flavor. Service and ambiance is the reason for this 2 stars, unfortunately nothing here made me wowed. Most of the items we ordered were overly salty like the fish dip which a lot of people recommended. I think it's ok that the dip was salty but the crackers it came with were also salty so together it was hard to eat. The only thing that was okay were the charbroiled oysters and bread pudding at the end which they kindly gave complimentary. Don't think I'll be visiting again unfortunately. read more

Came on a Friday night - we didn't have a reservation, and had to put our name's down for an hour wait, but we took the opportunity to walk around the neighborhood, and there is plenty of shops to look at and pop in, so the wait passed by quickly. The service is wonderful, each staff member was friendly. The restaurant has a quaint, authentic vibe, but not too crowded (it has area in the back). I was with a friend from the South, who said that this was one of the best food she had encountered in the City. The food was very tasty, and each portion is very well sized, I had enough to take home for leftovers after only ordering one entree. As a nice surprise, we were brought free dessert (bread pudding), which was delicious! I was very impressed at being offered that as a free addition to our meal. We weren't celebrating anything in particular, so I could tell the attention to the client was really well done. I'd definitely recommend to any seafood lovers who aren't afraid of something fried. The interior design at @strangedelight.nyc is cute, very NYC style, and the service was one of the friendliest I've had in the city in a while. Their food is inspired by New Orleans cuisine so there are oysters, seafood, fried seafood, etc. Their popular fried shrimp loaf actually reminded us of the sandwiches at breakfast stands in Taiwan, probably because of the milk bread they use. Overall the food was good but nothing memorable for me, and we got full quickly because of the amount of fried food and heavier dressing. read more

After visiting Strange Delight a first time, I felt it was my duty to visit a second time to make sure my experience wasn't a fluke. I shouldered the heavy burden and can now say with complete confidence that Strange Delight is my favorite restaurant in Brooklyn, if not anywhere. It would be easy to miss Strange Delight as you walk down the street, the entrance is nondescript on the outside, but take a step inside and you're suddenly in a lovely, compact seafood restaurant inspired by New Orleans. There is a bar facing an open kitchen and high tops immediately on entry, with the bar for drinks and additional seating in the back. The restaurant serves both groups and solo diners well in the menu design. While there are a couple of entrees on the menu, the bulk is small plates or dishes meant for sharing. Having dined both alone and with a date, I would say that Tower Service is almost mandatory, with the smallest option perfect for solo diners, and the two sides above serving groups well. Tower service includes raw oysters (with a lovely red wine vinegar mignonette), shrimp cocktail, shrimp remoulade, smoked fish dip and, most recebtly, salmon crudo marinated with soy sauce. The towers look and taste incredible, and should not be missed. Once you've decided the size of your tower service, all that's left is to pick accompaniments. On both occasions the spicy barbecue oysters were incredible, and perhaps the best cooked oysters I've had. With a date I also enjoyed the barbecue shrimp (fortunately the waitress brought some additional bread to sop up the broth it comes in, I don't know if I could have stopped myself from drinking it straight out of the bowl otherwise). Round out the evening with complimentary bread pudding (a fantastic touch that more restaurants should consider), and you've got what could be the best seafood dinner in Brooklyn. A special note with regard to Strange Delight that I do not know I've commented on for other restaurants: the plating is uniquely good. I simply cannot recall another restaurant I've visited with as much care paid to the dishes themselves, with the plates and bowls carefully selected to make what is an already elegant presentation that much better. The attention to detail is simply top notch, and the food a treat for both the eyes as well as the palette. As for drinks, on my first visit I sat alone at the bar in the rear where they make cocktails. I didn't stray far from the classics (old fashioned and a gin and tonic), but watching orders come in and drinks get made, you can see that there is obviously a very carefully planned cocktail program. The cocktails are certainly on the pricier side (the whole restaurant leans that way), but having watched the drinks be made the price is well worth it. Strange Delight leaves little room to improve: it's damn near perfect. Perhaps the only complaint I have is the popularity, which can make reservations a struggle at times. If you love seafood and can find a seat, there's probably nowhere better in Brooklyn. I'm already coming up with more occasions to come back. read more

I tried the catfish loaf, which had good flavor, though it was a bit heavy on the peppers for my taste. Next time, I'd go with the fried shrimp loaf--it definitely gives classic Po' Boy vibes. The fried shrimp itself was delicious! As for the sides, the red beans, greens, and mac and cheese are all worth trying. The mac and cheese is nice and cheesy, though it's a different style from traditional Southern baked mac. This place has an amazing and thoughtful service - our waiter thoroughly explained the menu and offered his recommendations. We tried the 1/2 dozen charbroiled oysters, the 1/2 oysters rockefeller, a salmon dish (I forget the name) and the hush puppies. Everything tasted delicious but my personal favorite was the oysters rockefeller because of its herby flavors. We ordered the smoked fish dip, 3 types of grilled oysters, bbq shrimp and the shrimp sandwich. All were lacking flavor. The smoked fish dip could've used more acidity, the grilled oysters were just okay, the sauce with the bbq shrimp was very oily and the shrimp had no flavor without the bbq sauce. I thoroughly enjoyed the food at Strange Delight. The crab dip was delicious and came with homemade phill crackers that were out of this world. The fried oyster sandwich is simple but it's delicious and full of flavor! The vibe is nice and slightly upscale so strange delight is a solid spot for everything from family dinners to date night. They do not sell dessert but every two people share this small piece of cake the is sooo delicious. Only down side is because they don't sell it you can't get your own. Our waiter was very attentive and checked in regularly. Loved this place and would definitely go back! Celebrating my birthday this weekend, my husband and I booked a last minute resy to kick the celebrations off and man, were we pleased. Keep in mind, this restaurant is all about ordering shared plates and savoring Nola in each bite. So we got a few things to share and left stuffed. We ordered the: -Hush puppies w/ butter (8/10) (Great, just skimpy on the buttuh) -Chargrilled oysters(7/10) (close flavor profile to Felix's in NOLA) -Shrimp loaf sando (5/10) (bread was too thin and soggy, didn't hold up with the crispy shrimp) -seafood gumbo (9/10) (small portion but delish) The seafood gumbo was a special and was a steep 40$ but I must say the flavor was amazing. They are not afraid of spice here which I'm a fan of. Strange Delight has been on my foodie list since it opened and I'm so glad I finally got to try it. As a NOLA lover and pescatarian, this restaurant was right up my alley. Menu Highlights: *Catfish Nuggets *Shrimp Loaf *Bread Pudding I ate here with two friends and are reviews were scattered. I don't eat raw oysters but both friends loved those. We also ordered the BBQ (skip) and Rockefeller Oysters (yummy). We also ordered the catfish nuggets (must order. The accompanying remoulade was yummy and the catfish was fried perfectly. For our mains, two of us got the shrimp loaf and one friend ordered the special of the night: gumbo. We loved the shrimp loaf and strongly disliked the gumbo. Since they use milk bread, it can get soggy if you let the shrimp loaf sit for too long so def finish it at one time. The gumbo simply wasn't good. We also ordered a side of Chinese Broccoli (skip- very very bland). I will say a large reason why my friends weren't huge fans is they thought the food wasn't seasoned enough. I enjoyed my food but a little lemon and hot sauce def made it better. Lastly, complementary bread pudding is served at the end of the meal and it is DELICIOUS. We honestly should have ordered a slice for each of us. In terms of service, we sat at the counter and got a bird's eye view of them preparing the food. Our waiter was nice and checked in. It is oyster centric, from the tower which has oysters, shrimps, as well as a few other dishes, to the hush puppies served with this honey butter. You may say hush puppies need nothing but this honey butter is amazing. There is the crab fried rice with creole seasoning that is so good. The 3 salads also rock. And then there is the grilled oysters, and the bbq shrimp. You can't go wrong here. Start with a hurricane, even a non alcoholic hurricane if you desire. There are some great wines by the glass too. Have cone here a couple times now and have bend very impressed with the wine selection as well as quality of the food. It is quite seafood forward so if that is not your thing, it's likely not for you. But if you are, I can't say there are any places with more fun bites than here. Their shrimp loaf sandwiches are quite possibly a perfect bite. A combination of soft bread, crisp lettuce and tomato capped off with a warm crunchy thick fried shrimp. They make Cajun saltines which are perfect for dipping into any number of their appetizers. Staff is also super friendly and helpful in choosing their specialties. Came here for lunch and it was an interesting experience. The bar in the back room was cute but because of the bright atmosphere and lunch plates, it felt like we were in a cafeteria. Our waitress only came to take our order then asked us to leave at the end because the next reservation was coming. We needed knives at one point and it took awhile to flag someone down, they didn't feel attentive. The sandwich was definitely the best part (the shrimp over catfish) but we also really liked the broccolini salad and the potato crisps. The $25 lunch special is pretty good (one main and 3 sides), which we got the catfish nuggets and the oyster mushrooms. They were super overly battered and the sauce to dip was pretty sour. I liked how juicy the fish was, but would pass on the quinoa salad and beans. The Mac and cheese was not too cheesy so I liked it but my friend didn't, the fish dip was good but a bit salty, and the cornbread was good, I wish it was a bit softer though. I had a chance to dine at Strange Delight during the soft opening last night. Overall, I really enjoyed everything I ate and could see myself coming back to try items on the menu that I didn't this time [the hush puppies!]. The restaurant is deceptively a good size: there's a small front room that faces the street and a larger back room with the bar and lots of natural light. The bar is good for solo diners and fits about 7 people. The bartender was so friendly and amicable. I really had a good time. I started with an orange wine, Queen of the Sierra Amber [$16], It was nice. A full bar was available but the house cocktails weren't ready yet. The best things I ate last night were: Spicy Charbroiled Oysters [$15]: the oysters were spicy but not crazy spicy where I couldn't eat more. The sauce is a tomato sauce with lots of zip. I wanted to lick the oysters clean. and Bread pudding: I really just wanted to dive into a vat of the sauce. The bread pudding itself was so luscious and kind of creamy. Another plate licker. I also had the fried shrimp loaf [$25] and the smoked fish dip [$14]. The shrimp loaf was a lot of food but it was absolutely delicious. It was also a messy eat with the lettuce and giardinera spilling out a bit. The shrimp was super crunchy and yum. The loaf could've been a meal in and of itself. The smoked fish dip was my least favorite dish. The fish dip itself really just didn't do it for me but the cheezit cracker with creole seasoning was bomb. You also get complimentary bread and butter which I really appreciated. The bread and butter were stunning and I could easily fill up on it alone. I would 100% come back. I saw that this restaurant was happening due to randomly going on Instagram and seeing someone I admired congratulating people on the soft opening. When I read that this was New Orleans inspired, I knew I had to go. Even though I planned to go solo, I decided to make a reservation through Open Table for a change since I believed it will get packed soon and I wasn't taking any chances (I was right). I was quickly seated for a 7 pm reservation. The front of restaurant had a counter, some longish tables and stools. But from the front, you couldn't see the additional seating in the back where the bar was (and my seat was). The bar wasn't fully stocked yet but it was a soft opening so it is expected for things to not be fully ready yet. Shoutout to the bartenders Tone and a lovely woman for being a fun time with a solo diner as myself. I ordered the charbroiled oysters, oysters bienvielle, the chinese broccoli salad and the blackened swordfish belly. The charbroiled oysters were an instant favorite and I was worried since enjoying them in New Orleans made me picky. One of the bartenders mentioned that the place had pizza ovens which made it work wonderfully (it was a former Italian restaurant Scopello). The broccoli salad was fresh and the dressing compliments it. The first loaf of bread is free (noted on the menu thank god) and that butter it comes with is perfectly salted. The fish was great and I personally didn't need the creole mustard cream that came with it but it works well with it. My favorite part of the experience was the service. As mentioned before the bartenders where I was seated were absolutely lovely and made my night great. And I believe the best marker of good service is what someone does when something goes wrong. So when one of my oysters were taking a long while to come, they acknowledged it and made it work. And as a restaurant that just opened, that behavior makes me want to come back. And I will. I have regrets that I didn't get the barbecue shrimp (pictured because my bar mate was kind enough to let me take a picture) so I need to get more options especially when the restaurant is fully open. read more

It's a really cool minimal vibe that's seemed to attract a diverse crowd. They finish off service with complimentary bread pudding and that was my favorite dish! Update... Service: The restaurant staff is very nice and quite lovely. Food: Do not come hungry. The food is expensive for very small portions and high prices. I was disappointed that they cannot give a decent portion that will satisfy you. Also the mixed drinks that we ordered come with a full glass filled with ice. A few sips and you are done with the drink. I do not mind paying high prices, but I do not want to leave feeling like I have to go to another restaurant just to feel satisfied. My bartender inflated my tip by $25.00 and tried to defraud me and my credit card. He wrote over my total. He didn't think that I would notice. Trust me, I am not the first person who he scammed, and I wont be the last. When I contacted Strange Delight by email, Geri responded by defending the bartender even though the evidence of the credit card fraud was clear on my receipt. The staff was so kind about this, we got a free glass of wine from the manager and desert. The food was delicious specifically the crab dip was so complex in flavor. This was one of the first restaurants my wife and I booked reservations for on our weeklong anniversary trip to New York and this is by far the best meal we had on the trip. The seating area in back is gorgeously lit with skylights that allowed the food to look as good in photos as it tasted. Servers are friendly and the music is great. We started off with the raw oysters, which were fresh and delicious. We'll definitely need to come back sometime to try the spicy charbroiled ones. Our bartender/server Tone highly recommended the barbeque shrimp, which would have been the star of any other meal we had this week. Four gigantic shell-on shrimps in the most delicious sauce. Tone recommended that we hold off on the bread basket until this dish came out for us to dip into and he was right. Next out was our favorite part, the blackened swordfish belly. I had never had this before and it was so meltingly fatty and watering meaty it really made me slow down to savor every last bit. The sauce and salad provided a good level of acid to balance out the dish and keep you wanting more. Then out came the fried oyster loaf. Light, crispy fried oysters sandwiched between two soft fluffy slices of shokupan (Japanese milk bread) with the sweetest tastiest pickles I've had (as someone so normally picks them out of his sandwiches) makes me sad there will be no close substitute I will be able to find at home. Last up is the bread pudding dessert. As it was our anniversary the restaurant and also gave us a scoop of lemon sorbet, normally saved for vegan diners. The bread pudding, made from leftover shokupan was silky and scrumptious and the sorbet was tart and refreshing. I don't know when the next time we will be able to make the trip across the country here again, but I know for a fact this place will be first on the list of things to do when we do. read more

The smoked fish was the best! Everything else unfortunately kinda tasted the same after being fried, especially the po'boys. The service was nice but they have a policy where you can't order more stuff on the menu after you've already ordered. read more

Finally was able to make it over to this place after hearing about it a ton and I wasn't disappointed! The restaurant has a really nice vibe and they played a nice mix of old school hip hop and R&B. I think it's perfect for a date night or a catch-up with friends with a smaller group (they don't have a ton of tables so I wouldn't recommend for a big group). Service was quick and our server was really knowledgable about the menu and gave us great recommendations. Here's the rundown of everything we ate: -Charbroiled Oysters: These were really tasty! Not the best I've had but satisfied my craving for them. Hit the right balance of butter and garlic without overpowering the oyster. -BBQ Shrimp: Didn't eat these personally but heard they were pretty good. The shrimp were massive and seasoned well but the sauce was missing something/was a little looser than expected, but it had good flavor. -Smoked fish dip: This was a standout for us. So flavorful but not overly fishy and the house-made crackers were a perfect vehicle for the dip. There is a lot of dill flavor here but we loved it! -Fried Shrimp Loaf: The milk bread on this was superdelicate and held up the perfectly crisp shrimp very well. The sauce on here was also nice and gave the sandwich some oomph. -Blackened Swordfish Belly: Skin on the fish was nice and crisp and the inside was moist. I loved how the sweetness of the fish paired with the mustard cream. After eating heavy for the other dishes, I thought this was the perfect entree. Hard to not compare this place to the other NOLA style restaurants in the city. While it isn't the best of them, it's near the top of my list. They do seafood really well! Visiting NYC and I wanted to choose a restaurant near my friend's place in Brooklyn. Strange Delight was highly rated for brunch on Eater and my bf was born in Southern Louisiana so I figured we could give it a try. I wasn't really sure what to expect from the menu but it was great! The space is much larger than it appears from the outside - there is a whole back room. Our server was awesome - so friendly and helpful in guiding our order. Their coffee and cocktails are delicious. The food is also good, though I wish I had chosen a few things differently. I wasn't a fan of the runniness of mac and cheese, and the kale was a bit tough. But the grilled shrimp were excellent, the cornbread was tender and perfectly accompanied by the honey butter. And the thing that capped off the meal was the rice pudding. Our server convinced us to get it, and they were so right! If you like rice pudding at all, please get this!! I would deduct one star for the kale and mac and cheese, but I added it back just for the rice pudding. read more

Been here three times and had an excellent meal each time. The shrimp loaf is one of the best sandwich I've ever had. Order it. Hell - order 2! Also would recommend all of the raw bar. That said, I was not a big fan of the charbroiled oysters, having tried all of the variations over my visits. Still a solid 5 stars because the shrimp sandwich is so damn good. Additionally, the ambiance is pleasant and they have a nice drink list. Don't sleep on the meat and 3 lunch menu! read more
