I have lived in Brooklyn for 12 years, but never had dinner in Red Hook until this weekend. My friend was visiting, and she remembered vividly eating from the Red Hook Lobster Pound food stand in Union Square a few years ago. It made such a strong impression on my friend that she demanded we eat at this restaurant. The restaurant was packed, but we managed to get a spot at the bar and watch the Mets game. The food was immaculate, and we ordered the Hot Crab Dip, Garlic Biscuits, and I ordered "The Connecticut." You wander past the weathered brick warehouses and and right there on Van Brunt Street sits the Red Hook Lobster Pound. Step inside, and the place nails the decor. It's got a solid, nautical feel that gives you enough brass and wood to feel like a real lobster shack. They've got a generous stretch of outdoor seating for when the weather is nice, and inside, the music sits at a good volume. Then comes the food. I started with the clam chowder. It's good ...comforting, rich, well-made ......even if it's a little light on the minced clams. I caught myself digging around with my spoon, searching for a few more chunks of clam in the creamy broth, but I forgave it because the flavor was fantastic. Main event: the Maine lobster roll. Now look, I've eaten lobster rolls all over the Northeast..and a few other places. When you order a lobster roll, you're looking for flavor and simplicity. Red Hook's roll is good. The lobster is fresh. But here's the thing: at an overall tab running around $80 a head, you expect a top-tier entry into the culinary lobster roll pantheon. Instead, it lands on the smaller side of the spectrum. Worse, the kitchen holds back on the seasoning. Lobster is sweet and rich, sure, but it needs a little help...... a hint of herbs, or just a generous hand with the salt/pepper to elevate it from good to great. It's a good roll, but when the check landed, I couldn't help feeling a bit let down. To finish, I looked at the dessert choices. I've visited RHLP a couple times more since my first review and I always defaulted to the traditional Lobster boil dinner. On this 250th birthday of America (4th of July and 97 degrees), I was in the mood for a Lobster Roll. I realize my first review mentioned the appearance of their Lobster rolls were underwhelming. They still are . Having tried it today, I'll narrow it down: Delicious? Yes. Fresh? Yes. Overpriced? Yes. Small Roll portion? Yes. Our server was courteous and attentive and my Narraganset Beer hit all the right notes to accompany my Lobster Roll. Ice cold and light. We chose the Connecticut style Lobster roll which was prepared warm and poached in butter (no mayo). The menu offered four Lobster Roll styles. I splurged by selecting fries to accompany my Roll because who wants a salad when it's a holiday? There were two prices per each roll. For Connecticut, it was either $41 or $51 with the latter including a more pile high serving of lobster: however, we were informed the smallish bun will remain the same. The best Lobster Roll I ever had still holds its title from North Fork, Long Island at one of the vineyards. RHLB Roll was very good. Chunky pieces of warm Lobster, not too buttery and accompanied by crispy French Fries. Overall, a very good holiday lunch. I just wish the bun length size were larger. We popped into the Red Hook Lobster Pound while checking out different restaurants along Van Brunt St. For our appetizer we chose to stop here. The service was quick and efficient. The decor is minimal but along the lines of a seafood dive bar. We had the hot crab dip. It was delicious, I do wish there was more crab in it, but overall flavorful. Well, today was my first time coming to experience red Hook and it's full beauty and my first stop was red Hook lobster pound the experience I had simply just walking in the door was clean and tidy well kept I was excited to see all of the menu items which truly were all exceptional. It's hard to choose what you're gonna get, but we got a Connecticut lobster roll with fries to go and ate it outside and the buttery warm, deliciousness, freshness and quality of the lobster. The roll in the fries was just truly so top-tier. You would think you literally were in Maine like I just have not experienced lobster and it's fullness as I did here. Aissa overheard we were celebrating a birthday came out with a candle on the Steve's Keylime pie. We were absolutely thrilled. She completely guided us throughout our ordering process and our entire experience at the restaurant and we are so thankful and grateful to have met her on our journey it was so good that we actually came back the same day a couple hours later to have the exact same order over again. Stopped by Red Hook Lobster Pound and overall had a tasty experience with a few hits and a couple of misses. The lobster roll was the real standout--loaded with meat, flavorful, and the bread was crispy and toasted to perfection. That alone is worth the trip. I also had one of their cocktails, and it was delicious--light, refreshing, and paired well with the seafood. I was really looking forward to the crab dip, but it ended up being a little lackluster. It was seasoned well and tasted fine with the chips, but I didn't really get much crab flavor--like it was drowned in whatever creamy mix they used, and the crab just got lost in it. Kind of a letdown considering how hyped I was for it. I also ordered the seafood boil with crab legs and corn, but sadly, that didn't hit either. There was no seasoning at all--no spice, no real flavor--just bland. Definitely wouldn't order that again. That said, I'd still come back for the lobster roll and to try other things on the menu. When and where have you ever seen a cooked/ prepared lobster for this price! I haven't! So even though it's a trip, I had to go check it out. The promo runs until Sunday, October 5th. We ordered: $25 promo lobster (you get the full lobster with the shell intact. It took us awhile to de-shell everything but it was worth it!) They give you butter to dip into. The lobster, corn and potatoes were probably steamed so you will need to dip it into the butter to give it some extra flavors. My son was working in Red Hook Brooklyn on Sunday and invited us to meet him for dinner at the Red Hook Lobster Pound ? Huh? Lobster what? Well this restaurant is a hidden gem,the lobster rolls are delicious just lobster, the roll and a pickle & fries no fillers ! I chose the lobster roll and potato salad which was freshly made ! First time at Red Hook Lobster. Nice inside but we sat outside in their booth area under a very well made dining awning. Drinks were okay but a bit on the expensive side for such a small glass. My wife decided to go for the dessert because she's heard of the key lime pie on a stick however, for some reason they don't serve it that way, just on a plate. So she opted for the peanut butter one instead and it wasn't bad. Not what she was expecting but not bad. I tried the Connecticut Roll with a side salad with a tasty vinaigrette dressing. The roll itself was a decent and expected size. The lobster meat itself was a tad bit on the fishy side at first bite, I tried to taste the butter with it but it didn't really come through for some reason. Literally just left Clam chowder soup was okay There was not ONE grain of salt, pepper or old bay NOTHING on the salmon. I wanted to die. It was so dry. We're in town for a couple days and tried this spot based off reviews and proximity to our hotel. We ordered to go but my husband said that when he ran inside, the food was ready to go, the vibe inside was nice and the staff were really nice. We ordered fish and chips, crispy Brussels sprouts and the key lime pie. Everything was hot and fresh which we loved! Fries were seasoned well, loved the thickness & crispiness of the fish batter but it coulda been seasoned a bit more. Crispy Brussels sprouts were no longer crispy but there's no way to get around that with any length of time outside of eating immediately. NOW...the star of the show was that key lime pie! We had to visit their flagship location after trying the best lobster roll I've ever had at their US Open event back in September. On this visit we ordered the main event for two which includes one appetizer, two lobster rolls and one dessert of your choice. For an extra $10 per roll you will get two ounces of extra lobster on your roll. For our appetizer we had the friend calamari with aioli sauce very good. We really enjoyed our Sunday lunch at this Red Hook standby. Service was professional, and our main wait person was truly personable. I began with a pint of the Oktoberfest, which was on point. I often order fried calamari or a frito misto, as a means to judge the comparative quality of the restaurant. RHLP's version came in a generous portion, still hot and fresh from the fryer. There was a nice balance between rings and tentacles - so often you just get the rings. Tender and crisp, even the latter pleased. I thought the aioli was the better of the two sauces. For mains we both ordered the $25 special lobster lunch, which might be the best buy I had in NYC in 2025. This included a 1 and 1/2 lb. crustacean, boiled red skin potatoes and corn. The lobster was fresh and sweet -- if wasn't as epic as one eaten on the docks in Maine - it was 85% of the way there. The red potatoes were good, and if the corn was a bit lackluster, well that's to be expected in October. I added some mussels to the dish, and while they were plentiful and fresh, that is something I would not repeat. I saw that another diner had added clams, and that may have been a better choice. Overall, a very enjoyable experience and a good value. Seafood outside on a beautiful day in a casual restaurant is the way to go. read more

So when I came to Brooklyn for a cruise, I had a day to explore the Red Hook food scene. My Google search led me here. I got it Maine style with extra lobster and fries. Everything was ok. Taste, quality, and quantity was ok. Service was ok, but never asked how my meal was or if my soda could be refreshed. The price? $50! For a lobster roll! Crab dip appetizer was luke warm at best, it should have been hotter. The accompanying chips were delicious. Lobster rolls were a good size for the regular portion but took forever to come out. The waiter was non-existent, a runner dropped the food but we had to flag down staff to get water, napkins. S&P, etc. What are we tipping for if you never check on your tables?? I LOVE Red Hook Lobster (RHL). I live in the DC area and first tried it here, but unfortunately the pandemic hit them hard and resulted in a closure. So, imagine my excitement when the hubby and I visited NY and saw RHL on the list for Smorgasburg. We visited RHL's food stall at Smorgasburg on 5/26/2024. I was laser focused on what I wanted upon arrival, yes, I saw there were other restaurants there, but did I care? No. I wanted RHL and basically nothing else! I ordered the Connecticut roll - it was warm, buttery, with toasty bread and I almost fell down because my knees were weak. I freaking love this roll. After consuming it, I said, hmm, I want more and went back and got the Maine style lobster roll, which is the cold style. Both of these rolls were perfect, but my preference is certainly the Connecticut roll. My complaints, well the normal ones, I wish the rolls were double the size and half the price, but 2024 has lobster costing a million dollars a pound, so I get it. read more

Overall: Red Hook Lobster Pound has become a staple any time we visit Red Hook. My girlfriend grew up in Maine and is quite particular about her lobster. This is the only place outside of New England that I've convinced her to try. The venue is fun. They have lots of seating so they manage to get a ton of people through and minimize wait times. Their beer selection was relatively expansive given the style of restaurant, and we were happy with our choice. Service: Our server was prompt and attentive. He didn't add anything particularly special, but he took our orders quickly, kept our drinks full, and checked in a few times. He checked all the boxes, but didn't do anything over the top. Value: The lobster rolls are good but pricey. They are served as either 4oz or 6oz. For Connecticut style, these were priced at $32/$42. They're filled nicely, but $42 is a lot even for a 6oz lobster roll. Atmosphere: This place is a fantastic place to pop into for lunch. Everything is lobster/marine/Maine themed. Red Hook Lobster Pound was just average in my book. Upon arrival, there were many spots open (both tables and at the bar). We had to wait 5 minutes to confirm that we could sit at the bar with the hostess and the woman at the bar was a bit rude. I ordered my beer and it came in a smaller glass than every other beer being served, so not sure why she dinged me on that. We went for the "Maine Event" ($125) which is sharable for two people - a starter, two lobster rolls ($105 for the regular 4oz. size and $125 for the large 6oz.), and a dessert. We ordered the Crab Dip as a starter, the Maine and Connecticut Style lobster roll for the main and Steve's Key Lime Pie as the dessert. The crab dip was good and the Old Bay chips paired perfectly. The large lobster rolls were a bit much, I think we could have done the regular. The Maine style was better than the Connecticut though! The Key Lime Pie took a bit too long to come out - we asked for it twice. It could have been more tart - not much of the key lime flavor we were looking for. The restaurant had no cool air, we were sweating at our table, the air conditioner water dropped on my shoulder a couple of times where they sat us. Fried calamari were okay. Uh oh, yes. This is going to be one of those breakdown reviews, also known as my longer reviews, where I break down everything I ordered and give it a score. Bear in mind I have been to Maine, if you have followed me long enough you know that. While there I ate many lobster rolls, tried the soups, and know the seafood. Check those out if you have time. Lobster Bisque: It lacks here. No chunks of lobster, just creamy in texture with fine lobster bits. It is pretty small for the price, and was not sad when I finished it. The fact it came with oyster crackers helped. Score: 3/5 Lobster Mac n Cheese: I got the small and it was more than enough. The sauce is creamy, the noodles are perfectly cooked, and it is plenty rich. It could use more lobster meat and some breadcrumbs to add some crunch to the dish. However, once the lobster was eaten, it was too much noodle, and I had to discard it. Maybe I could have kept the leftovers in post, but then it is just a Mac n cheese, which I could have gotten anywhere else. Score 3.5/5 Classic Roll: This is the knuckles and claws of this review, and yes that is deliberate. There is a lot of lobster meat on the roll. It is succulent and fresh, and the roll is authentic. Two problems, the lemon flavor is overwhelming on the roll, and the roll has lettuce in it, and scallions. WHY? Score: 3.5/5 Coleslaw: This comes with the roll, but I did not like it one bit. It is dry and bland and brings zero value. I was better off ordering chips instead. Score: 1/5 Connecticut Roll: Funny enough, this was the roll I really enjoyed. Drawn butter, succulent meat, no lettuce (atta boy!), fresh flavors. The joke is that because we are closer to Connecticut the roll would taste better, but in all seriousness, it is the more authentic roll. Simple does it, and that is what happens here. Score: 4/5 Lemonade: A little tart for my liking, but not too bad. Could have been worse, but also better. I should have gotten one of those Maine sodas as I know they have a bit of bite to them. This was pleasant and mellow. Score: 3/5 Before I left I spoke with one of the managers and he was a chill dude. He took all my suggestions seriously and was impressed by my knowledge of Maine desserts (Blueberry pies and Whoopie pies please!), and that if they were on the dessert menu, I would have certainly ordered them.
