First time trying this place. Pleasantly surprised by portion size and flavor. They did not skimp out on toppings in their soup. Definitely ordering from here again.
My go to spot when I don't know what's for dinner. Tried many of the dishes here and they have not let me down. The fish is good for 2 people shared. Friendly staff and very attentive.
One of my favorite grilled fish spot, the flavor is intense and pickled one is my favorite. The ending of sweet herb jelly really hits the spot. The fried calamari can be skipped. They first fried the fish then put it in soup and it makes everything well Blended together. Pair it with rice or ask for extra noodles. Can't go wrong with this place. It's clean and tidy in the restaurant. The staffs are friendly as well.
I'm a huge Nai bro fan when it comes to getting my weekly spicy/sauerkraut fish fix. But I decided to switch it up one day and try this new spot out. The restaurant is spacious and has lots of seating. Menu is pretty standard and not too elaborate. I ordered their golden soup with snakehead fish. They start you off with complimentary appetizer and give you free grass jelly dessert at the end. The golden soup is okay, the flavor is pretty mild compared to Nai Bro and the spice level is mild. I think Young Fish offers better fish quality though. Fish is definitely a lot more smooth. Rice comes with the meal and refills are complimentary if you order a large. I notice this place is pretty popular with families and the elderly. It might be because the flavor of the soups here are more mild and a healthier alternative compared to similar restaurants like Nai Bro and Fish With You, that offers spicier fish dishes. I wasn't crazy about this place in the beginning but it has definitely warmed up to me and I've frequented it more often after my first visit.
Clean, affordable and tasty! The fish bowls are huge! If you are sharing it with one person, you will have plenty of leftovers. The popcorn chicken was cooked perfectly. There's plenty of space, it does almost look like a cafeteria style ambiance. The service was good, they were nice and attentive. They messed up an order but apologized and fixed our bill.
I want to come back on my next meal. Service is good and zero wait. The ambiance is like a cafeteria. The food is delicious. It's not expensive. We order a bit too much for a table of three. They give you unlimited rice with all the spicy food. Best of all, they end this with a free dessert. Why can't all restaurants do that. Ambiance yes can be minimal and cafeteria. It's clean.

Highly recommend their combo meals for around $21-$24 per person, you get a drink (non-specialty options like mango passion fruit tea or hot tea), an appetizer, and your main fish dish. Such great value these days! Here's what we tried: * French fries - Surprisingly great, crispy like McDonald's! * Crispy pork- A bit on the chewy side; I think I'll try the popcorn chicken next time. * Mango passion fruit tea - Too sweet for me, but hubby really enjoyed it. * Hot tea - Loved their paper cup design that keeps all the tea leaves at the bottom--very clever! * Chili oil fish soup- Nicely balanced! For $13.95, a single plate could easily feed two or more people. The fish is super fresh, flaky but still has a nice snap, and the broths have a ton of flavor and variety. If you like the classic mala spicy and sour broth, go for the green Sichuan peppercorn version. If you're not into spicy food, the tomato broth is a solid choice. For the $21 combo, you get a huge plate of broth with fish and vegetables, plus your choice of fried chicken or pork slices and those portions are big along with a drink and rice included. You don't find that kind of value very often. After your meal, they even give you a free dessert a cold herbal jelly that's the perfect refreshing way to cool down after all the spice.

There are plenty of tables in fours or twos and it is bright inside, but not overly bright with blinds. The sauerkraut fish was an acquire taste which I'm not used to because of the sourness, but can see myself liking it more because I love fish. The fish was also thinly sliced with sour mustard greens, cabbage and potato noodles. I got set B which is a snakehead fish and chose the green peppercorn flavor, with popcorn chicken and winter melon ginger green tea. The popcorn chicken was fresh and tasty. The drink was more green tea flavor and wished it had more ginger flavor, will definitely pick something else next time. I think the set is enough for 2 people because it was a lot of food. When we sat down we got cucumber salad with peanuts and at the end of the meal got a lychee grass jelly dessert which was refreshing after the mala feeling from the peppercorn.
Young Fish is a new addition to the 8th Ave Chinatown food scene, and with sauerkraut fish becoming so popular, it's nice to see another spot open up on the strip. The interior is clean, though the seating setup feels a little awkward. When we were seated, a cart of garbage was being pushed around and at one point it was left right next to our table, which definitely took away from the dining experience. That said, the servers were super friendly and welcoming. The service wasn't bad, just a bit slow, but that could be them working out some kinks since they're still new. As for the food, it was okay but nothing that really stood out. Compared to other sauerkraut fish restaurants, it felt like it was missing a little something to make it memorable. I was hoping it would be on par with some of the Flushing spots so I wouldn't have to travel that far, but it fell short. Overall, it wasn't a bad meal, but not a place I'd rush back to.

This type of fish dish usually comes at a higher price tag but Young Fish seems to be able to make the fish dishes affordable by making it portions for one or two people. My hubs and I enjoyed our weekend dinner here. The restaurant was filled up but we were lucky there was one free table that night. We ordered the Green Sichuan Peppercorn Sauerkraut Fish (we chose basa) for two people. I enjoyed the flavors of the sauerkraut and the fish filets were fresh. This fish dish is not spicy at all to me but it is a bit numbing due to the peppercorn ingredient. We both enjoyed it! To start, everyone gets the Cucumber Salad, this was pretty good. For appetizer, we ordered a Crispy Squid on the side - it was nicely fried in batter and not greasy at all. We ordered the Passionfruit Jasmine Tea and it was very refreshing and not too sweet. In the end, we got a jelly dessert. It's a nice addition to help cool down the spice we just ate. Next time, I would like to come try the Grilled Fish! I saw another table ordered this and it was on a cute small grill. I have only had grilled fish with family and it is usually a huge portion. It would be nice to get it for my hubs and I or just for me! :)

I'm used to, and prefer, the way the other restaurants in the area does it, where there's less coating and less of a fried taste. The size of the fish isn't bad either, but it's a very bony fish overall. I would still come back to get this again, especially if I'm craving a fried fish. The garlic sauce it comes is really good and the batter soaks up everything nicely. Ordered the chili oil sauerkraut with the snakehead fish. The single portion is enough for two people to try, but won't get full from. They do add a lot of the veggies and noodles, but overall, the taste was a little lacking and watered down. I wasn't a big fan of the fish itself either. Service is pretty good for 8th Ave, and comes with free jelly dessert at the end.
This place was SO GOOD! For basically $15, you get a large bowl of soup, rice, appetizer and dessert?! In this economy? With how tasty everything was. I almost wanted to gatekeep this place yall. Definitely get the Sour Fish soup. You also get to choose the fish and I went with their Base default option which was basically fish without the skin and thicker meat.
My first time trying sauerkraut fish was at Young Fish. Stepping into the restaurant, I immediately loved how spacious it was and how many tables and seats there were. It was kind of giving Hong Kong fast food/cafeteria type of vibes. It wasn't too busy when I went on a weekend for lunch. I love that you get a complimentary side dish with the order, and I went for cucumber salad, but it was served chilled. The salad contained wood ear mushrooms, which are known to release toxins if kept overnight, so I hope it was made the day of and not old! I really liked the udon beef stir fry. It was pretty big for just $13.95, and the udon had a good texture (not too mushy) while the beef tasted fresh. For the sauerkraut fish, you can choose between small and large. I got the small but felt that it was still a lot, so the portions are really generous. You can also choose between three different types of fish: basa, snakehead, and grass carp. The staff said snakehead is the most popular so we just went with that. It was filet (aka deboned) and tender when it arrived. But I think I'm not a big fan of the sauerkraut flavor. Also, it was crazy mala even with just one pepper sign. I'd go back to try the tomato sauerkraut version. I actually liked another fish dish more: garlic grilled fish. It also had a bit of broth that was very tasty. I would get this one again. Ended the meal with complimentary grass jelly! read more

Went to Young Fish on 8th Ave with a friend and shared the large chili oil sauerkraut fish with basa. We knew the large would be big, but it was still more food than we expected once it came to the table. Definitely not something I'd order alone. The broth was sour first, then the spice started building in an amazing way after a few bites. It wasn't painfully spicy or anything, but there was enough chili oil to make us slow down a little. The basa was very soft and picked up a lot of the broth, which I liked. Some pieces had been sitting near the bottom longer and tasted even better. The restaurant is pretty casual. Our food came out quickly. I'd order the same flavor again, but next time I'd either bring more people or get a smaller portion because the large was honestly a lot for two. read more
Great local spot in the heart of Chinatown. My bf and I had the green Szechuan peppercorn fish and golden sauerkraut fish and both were so tasty and very fragrant. Young Fish in Brooklyn is a solid spot for a quick tasty meal. Service was friendly and welcoming. It was a nice touch that they started us off with a small complimentary salad of peanuts and wood ear mushrooms since I don't go for big portions of that stuff. The tables are a bit tight, but the place was fairly empty when I went so it didn't feel cramped. Their rice is a highlight, with a wall of rice cookers, cooked to just the right texture. I really enjoyed the scallion sauerkraut fish, hearty and flavorful, and my partner loved the golden beef noodle soup. Portions are a bit smaller than this other spot, but I'll take their flavors over theirs. The meal ended with a complimentary grass jelly dessert, not memorable but a sweet little gesture. read more

This place is fairly new to the area and has been packed every time I've walked by. I finally decided to stop in and see what the hype was about. My friend and I shared the crispy pork and the garlic pepper grilled fish, which the staff recommended as the least spicy option. They started us off with a complimentary pickled cucumber dish that was super refreshing and really helped open up our appetites. The crispy pork was full of flavor and nicely seasoned with a hint of peppercorn. But the real highlight was the garlic pepper grilled fish. It came out sizzling and smelled amazing. The fish was a good size, served with a mix of fresh vegetables and glass noodles. The fish was perfectly cooked with a crispy skin and a soft, flaky interior. My spice tolerance is pretty low and this dish had just the right amount of heat. A little kick, but nothing overwhelming. Service was excellent and the staff were very attentive. Saw this saukaurat fish spot open up shortly after Fish with you (a block away) so I will mostly be comparing the 2. In terms of presentation and cleanliness they are very similar. Menu: Young fish has a broader menu as it offers grilled fish. If you're only getting saukaurat fish they both offer the same flavors. Flavor: Young fish's signature is a lot less spicy than Fish with you. I have a low spice tolerance so the former is better fitted for my taste. Young fish also gives more included toppings. Price: Young fish does not allow you to order a large for their signature so going as 2 will force you to either order 2 smalls or a combo to share. Fish with you offers a membership pricing and Friday's are BOGO half off for the small. If you are ok participating in their membership program by preloading money into your account, Fish with you is certainly better value. However, if you are not a frequent fish fan, the former makes more sense. Specifically, a small at young fish costs $17 but Fish with you is ~$28 for 2 smalls on Friday plus you get extra "money" for reloading your account. Fish with you also offers unlimited rice for you rice lovers. read more
This is a new spot in 8th Avenue Brooklyn's chinatown. It's very spacious inside and the menu is pretty simple. There are meal sets if you like or you can order A la carte. Only bad part was our service, the waitress didn't come check on us often until we flagged them down to get our checks. No water or tea was given to us either. Another thing is, the waitress that brought our food out dropped a piece of fried squid and did not say sorry. We ordered 2 meals to the their drinks and appetizers too. The fried squid is 80% batter so skip that and get the fried chicken instead. Their drinks are interesting, I tried their winter melon ginger. It's not too sweet and refreshing. My fish dish I chose spicy with basa fish. Basa fish is just filets with no bones and skin. The spice was okay, and the sour level was good. It comes with a bowl of rice. They have a bunch of rice cookers constantly cooking. Overall this is a decent spot for sauerkraut fish soup. If you pay with cash, there won't be any credit card fees on top of your bill. read more
Food: The food was very delicious here. This is a brand new place that opened recently. After you order, you're given pickled marinated cucumbers which was good but a bit soggy. Maybe it's been sitting and marinating too long. The flavor was still good though. The popcorn chicken was cooked perfectly and so moist. The flavor of five spice added a nice touch. I would recommend the popcorn chicken. The bowls of fish come in different flavors you can choose from and include veggies and noodles. I tried the chili peppercorn fish which was amazing. The fish comes with cabbage, glass noodles, tofu skin, and mustard greens. The meal also comes with unlimited rice. Service: Service was phenomenal. Staff were friendly and super attentive. Ambiance: The place has a lot of seating. Ambiance is bright and clean. Most tables are for small parties, but I'm sure they can accommodate larger groups if needed. First time trying, no expectations, pleasantly surprised with the outcome. Fairly quick service and decent prices for the set meals. Each set comes with your choice of flavors, a drink, and an appetizer. The place basks in the afternoon sun and it's brightly lit for the evenings. Food wise, I'm willing to bet this is a good choice for those who are suffering from a hungover. Just be sure to throw on some shades while you eat your drunk heart out. Bravo! read more

Very spacious and lots of seatings. Staff members were very kind and helpful. Great fresh fish. Some fish were super spicy. I love how they offer herbal jelly afterwards, such a great dessert after all the spice. They had THE BEST brown sugar rice cakes ever (so crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside). I came here as part of winning a instagram giveaway, and while they knew we were here for the giveaway, they didn't treat us any different and service was still quick and easy. Personally, I would not normally pick this type of food to eat in Chinatown, but now I can't stop thinking about it and will definitely be back. As part of the giveaway, I got to choose a sauerkraut fish and a grilled fish. I got the sichuan pepper sauerkraut fish with basa fish and the garlic pepper grilled fish which came with rice and you can request more if needed. Both were excellent and I would love to come back to the try the golden sauerkraut fish. The sichuan pepper sauerkraut fish was very flavorful and not too spicy for me (but I do love spicy foods) and the garlic pepper grilled fish was very garlicky just the way I like it. The vegetables in both dishes were soaked in the delightful sauce. Don't be fooled by the grilled fish, because all the vegetables are under the fish. I came with two friends and we still couldn't finish and were all stuffed so we took the leftovers home. They also give you a free smashed cucumber appetizer at the beginning and a free mildly sweet dessert at the end which I love. read more

There's been a lot of new sauerkraut fish (suan cai yu) places that have popped up in the city recently and this happens to be the latest one. As far as sauerkraut fish goes, this one is pretty good. You get to choose from two types of fish: basa or the more expensive snake head fish. I'd recommend going with the more expensive option - the snake head fish is a little more tender than the basa. They give you seven different broths to select from. For those who like numbing flavor but without too much spice, go with the green peppercorn. The Sichuan peppercorn is for those coming for both numbness and spice. Service is very efficient. Even when I went, which was only a few weeks after they opened, they were a well oiled machine. Decided to this new place out in the neighborhood! Inside was clean & spacious! Staff were very nice and attentive :) They start you off with this cucumber, wood ear, and peanut salad! Very refreshing and appetite stimulating. I got the large sour cabbage sauerkraut basa fish which is perfect for 2 people. The fish comes with other ingredients like cabbage, glass noodles, tofu skin noodles, & spices! The soup was super flavorful and tasted very light! The fish also comes with a free bowl of rice per person. And at the end they gave this herbal jelly dessert which was great to cleanse your palate after the fish! My total came out to be $25 which is a great steal for the amount of food you get (free app & dessert too!!) Would definitely come back to try out the grilled fish next time read more

Lately there been a few fish cuisine opening up and these type of cuisines have been trending. I been eyeing this particular restaurant for a few weeks now, every time I passed by. It finally opened and We tried out tonight. We Absolutely love this place! The fish is incredibly fresh, and you can really taste the quality in every bite. All the ingredients are top-notch, and the seasoning is perfectly balanced - flavorful without overpowering the natural taste of the fish. A must-try if you're a fan of authentic, well-prepared fish dishes. PLUS service is also excellent and very catering. read more

We went late morning on a weekend. Almost all tables filled. The tables and chairs seems to be pretty low and small. Came and sat down with the menu. Gave us cups of tea. After we ordered the fish and snack, they gave us a dish of pickled cucumber with peanuts for free. It's very light. Doesn't have a strong vinegar taste. We ordered the Garlic pepper grilled fish which is $35.95. It's a bit spicy and they said it comes with 2 bowls of rice. This fish only for dine in. It's not in the take out menu. Nice grilled fish. Good amount and delicious. They seem to use premium quality rice. They use those $300 Zojirishu rice cookers. We also ordered the brown sugar rice cake as an appetizer for $6.95. It came in 6 pieces. They were piping hot. You have to be careful when you bite into it because the brown sugar syrup might burn your lips and tongue. When we ask for the bill to leave, they gave us bowls of the sweet herbal jelly dessert for free. It was good. It wasn't super sweet. They said we get 5% discount if you pay in cash which is what we did. Not sure if it is part of grand opening promotion or not. read more
