Salt and pepper squids 2/5 stars
    Melody C.

My family decided to give this new neighborhood addition some business on New Year's Day. It was a risky move given that there weren't that many reviews yet, but we took the plunge. Of the six or seven dishes that we ordered, only two missed the mark, which isn't awful but definitely not what we were hoping for. Sadly, the two that were lacking are my favorite Chinese dishes! Golden Double Egg Fried Rice (5/5) - Good wok hei (wok flavor/power). Each piece of rice was individually coated. The seasoning was good. Roasted Squab (4/5) - I don't eat squab, but my family members said the squab at Shun Deck restaurant on 86th St tastes better even though the pieces are smaller over there. We had to wait 30 minutes for this to be served because they ran out of them last night and still needed to do prep work for them. We were notified of this upon placing the order, so that was much appreciated. A perk is it comes with deep-fried prawn crackers. Salt and pepper squid (2/5) - The squid was very chewy/ didn't taste good quality or fresh. The batter also separated from the squid pieces. Salt and pepper seasoning was ok but could've been better. Not many pieces given. I am obsessed with the salt and pepper squid from Golden Palace (a few blocks from Uncle Foon's) so that's the standard I expect. Walnut Shrimp Balls (0/5) - Honestly, I don't even know where to start with this dish. First, the broccoli had some brownish color, so I don't think the broccoli was in condition when they cooked it. The walnuts were sooooo stale and didn't have that candied exterior. The shrimps were passable, but they were just topped with globs of mayo. The mayo was not mixed into the dish, as it usually is at other places. I looked at some other customers' photos of this dish, and theirs had the mayo mixed into it. I'm not sure how Uncle Foon's managed to screw up this classic Chinese dish, but they did. Peking pork chop (5/5) - I usually really like the sauce and the thin pork chops, but there would usually be a lot of fatty pieces that I disliked. Uncle Foon's was mostly thin pieces with no fat, so I was a big fan of the dish here. My party also ordered razor clams and a stir-fried fish dish. The fish dish was not bad. Small interior but could fit 3 large parties at once. Don't expect a fancy setting here.

Food and service both are well served and taking care. We keep bringing friends here for taste of good food, good service and a clean environment.

Definitely a welcome addition to this part of the neighborhood, which doesn't have too many smaller Chinese restaurants. My family decided to check them out for dinner, and we were quite impressed with the quality and flavors of food for a newly opened restaurant. Prices tend to be a little bit on the higher end. Squab here was really good - perfectly fried, well seasoned, and piping hot! Most of the other dishes we got were also tasty & well portioned. Unfortunately we didn't love the fish maw soup (lacked a bit of seasoning) and the beef brisket casserole. The restaurant has a good number of tables despite being a smaller restaurant. It definitely gets LOUD in here, with the smaller space and acoustics. Service appears to be fairly experienced, maybe a little nervous still. Parking is doable around this area.

First time eating here, very friendly wait staffs and the food is amazing. Will be back for sure. Henri

My party of 14 came here to celebrate the lunar new year. We were seated in a basement room. The room was comfortable and had a tv and Karaoke system. The food was okay. It was a bit too greasy for my taste, even the veggies were greasy! The grease made the food very heavy. I ate very little but felt uncomfortably full. The eel was presented well, although the sauce overpowered the taste of the eel itself. The steamed fish was my favorite - light, fresh and tasty!

A bunch of us went back again. This time it was our dear friend Ray's bday. Service was excellent and the food was even better than the first time. Can't wait to go back.

A new restaurant recently just open up. So we decided to give it a try. Service is good. Food is just okay. Order Clam with black bean sauce which was good and fresh. Noodles is not bad. The rest of the food is just ok. The sweet & sour spare ribs, the meat has no taste, and it doesn't taste fresh. Seem like the meat been fried for sometime and just sat there.. Doesn't have the crisp to it.. Overall everything is just ok.

The food is really good (albeit a tad salty for the beef with pineapple chunks), the service is excellent as wait staff is attention-oriented, and ambiance is fine with no frills, bells nor whistles.

The food was very fairly priced and the portions were huge. We got the pork soup dumplings, pork fried rice, szechuan chicken (which came with white rice), and pad see ew (which though not listed comes with pork, chicken, and shrimp). Everything was solid, but our favorite was the fried rice which had a ton of flavor. I liked the veggies that were in the chicken dish but there were just way too many of them compared to the chicken and I wasn't crazy about the sauce. The pad see ew wasn't made the traditional way I've had it with soy sauce and oyster sauce. It had some sort of orange sauce that tasted closer to a sweet and sour. It wasn't bad it was just not what I was hoping for. The soup dumplings were solid, no complaints there. And the fried rice was great, lots of flavor. Overall, I liked this place especially for the price but I'd probably order different things if I went back.

I found parking down the block and walked over to the restaurant. It seems like more of a delivery spot because there was no one inside sitting at any of the 5 tables. It's a fairly good size space, very simply decorated, mixed with a cool wall resembling a curio cabinet of treasures. I chose a spot in the middle and went to the restroom which was clean and simple. I noticed there were a lot of takeout orders, from delivery services to local folks picking up their regular dinner. I looked over the menu and decided on salt and pepper wings and an order of shrimp. Fried Rice came out first and it was delicious. I even tasted a hint of salted egg yolk mixed into the egg mixture friefried up with the rice that signature crispiness with the little saltiness.... fantastic. The salt and pepper wings were different than the ones i'm accustomed to though the flavor was amazing. It didn't have the fried garlic, peppers, chilis, and onions that i'm accustomed to being in the dish. They were still flavorful, juicy and crisp and I could tell they cooked them fresh. That was much appreciated. I ended up taking half of my food home because I was stuffed.Thank you Msm Ellen and the Crown Garden crew for a tasty solo dinner.

The pork with garlic sauce was absolutely delicious. This one isn't spicy so it didn't numb the mouth. The mapo tofu was also delicious and a little spicier but still not numbing the mouth. Def better to have it with rice though. The green pepper fish was mouth numbing and honestly I couldn't taste much of the flavor because the combination of spice and the hot temperature of the food was overbearing for me. So if you're like me and can tolerate some spicy but not numbing spicy then I would recommend telling them less spicy. Portions were perfect for 5 people (3 males and 2 females) as we ordered 2 of the pork with garlic sauce, 2 mapo tofus, and 1 big green pepper fish dish. We went on a Saturday at 5:30pm so it wasn't too crowded. Overall delicious and the staff were all friendly and very attentive in filling up our water for our spicy meal. (mapo tofu not shown as we were too hungry)

Pray tell, why would you send me on my way with 3 packets of duck sauce and one container of…read moreketchup for crab Rangoon?? Where is the sweet & sour? Where is the sweet chili? Cheap. There was nothing that I ordered that needed ketchup. Nothing. There wasn't even soy sauce in the bag. Then had the unmitigated gall to charge $22 for the salt baked shrimp and told me I had to pay $5 extra to substitute the lo mein for white rice. Who is eating white rice with shrimp? Girl bye. I'm not paying almost $30 for one meal from a hood Chinese spot. If there's no heat in your establishment, your prices need to be in lowercase. If it looks like you might catch staph in your establishment, your prices need not to be so loud. I also believe they overcharged me. They did have a sign saying that the prices went up, but I think they may have been too cheap to print out a new menu if that was the case. I was going off of what they had on the wall for the general public. So as I stated, I ordered crab Rangoon ($7, allegedly), honey wings ($7, allegedly), a shrimp egg roll ($2, allegedly), spare rib tips with fried rice ($12, allegedly). My total was $31. My assumption is they probably charged me extra for pork fried rice, which I didn't ask him for. I know for a fact they are not charging tax because there's no way that you're forcing people to pay in cash while also charging them for taxes that you don't pay. The crab Rangoon was actually pretty decent even though I didn't have the sauce that comes with it. The honey wings were OK. They actually taste more like honey BBQ. I prefer C&Y honey wings. It's real honey and stay hot for an hour due to the way honey maintains heat. I also don't appreciate when these spots chop up a wing and call it two wings. 1 wing is the entire thing. STINGY. The spare rib tips I don't like and neither do I like their pork fried rice. The rice is a bit bland and I don't like those large spare rib tips. I prefer the boneless spare rib tips that C&Y has. A shrimp roll is a shrimp roll is a shrimp roll. It wasn't too bad and it was actually pretty happy. The shrimp was a little bit larger than those baby shrimp that they normally stuff in shrimp rolls. Their pricing is on par with C&Y yet I don't have no issues paying what they ask and their food is good aside from their lo mein. They are not stingy and have pretty decent customer service unlike the guy who took my order here who paused my order to take another order over the phone and tend to the person behind me. This is what I get for cheating on my spot and being lazy when they both were far af.
