Another couple and ourselves went for dinner on Saturday September 27. We had some difficulty making a reservation even though when we arrived there were many available tables both inside and out. After placing our order for 2 glasses of wine we ordered dinner and ate it. The service was fine and the food ( I had the halibut special) was good. We got the bill and handed over our credit cards without verifying the bill ( our mistake, especially since on a previous visit a few months prior the restaurant charged both our credit cards for the entire check instead of only 1/2!). When we got home we realized that they had charged us for 4 glasses of wine rather than the 2 we ordered and received! We called immediately and after several follow up calls finally received a call back today (Oct8). The manager indicated that despite the fact that it was their mistake they would not issue a credit for the 2 extra glasses of wine. Instead they offered a gift card in the amount of the overcharge. While not ideal we would have accepted it but then they said we had to come pick it up, they were too busy to mail it to us! We are pissed. This is the second billing error that they have made and their response was completely unacceptable! Neither we nor any of our friends will frequent this restaurant again. The food was great but the service was beyond poor. We waited for 30 min after we were seated and no staff waited on us. We had to ask the host if there was a waiter available to take our order. He checked with the servers and still no help. The host ended up taking our order and he was amazing. However, we talked to the manager afterwards and he had a major attitude and only made excuses for the poor service. It was very disappointing and will never go back. We've been going here on and off for almost 2 years now and I think it's an underrated spot in Denver. We usually make reservations but love that they've never had us wait even during peak hours. Food's decent (they've gotten more vegetarian options over time). The servers are pretty friendly (we've had good conversations with multiple servers and great recommendations too!). I prefer outside seating for date nights and such cause inside can get packed -- I just prefer more private and quieter vibe for date nights, which the patio is perfect for! read more

A bowl of minestrone soup for $16 that had about 3 noodles, 1/10th of a carrot, a bite of celery and 1/4 c broth. Lasagna? New favorite Italian spot! Mussels to start were the RIGHT choice. Amazing tomato broth that I happily drank up with a spoon after the mussels disappeared. My bolognese rigatoni pasta was perfect in every way. And my date's short rib ravioli was incredible! We each had delicious wine and ordered the pistachio gelato for dessert (perfect). This place has gone down the tubes! What used to be our go-to restaurant is now OFF the list! First: The Cesar Salad is 1/2 the size (with maybe 5 herbed croutons ) as in previous times and they charge (without a mention) $3:00 to split! REALLY! It was that difficult to put this little salad on 2 plates!? Secondly: I ordered Fettuccine, Mussels, Clams & Shrimp..with extra garlic! What came! Lots of soft pasta with maybe 3 each of mussels, shrimps and clams! BUT soooo small you could hardly see much less TASTE! ESPECIALLY the clams and mussels! AND NO extra garlic! Sent back! Ordered the Tuna special and silly me I expected RARE tuna and instead was served medium to well done skinny piece. We had 5:00 reservations which is also when they open so they weren't crazy busy yet and we were seated right away. The layout of the place is comfortable with a bar as you enter and dining in the bar area and beyond. There is a heavy smell of wood smoke from the pizza oven that almost had me ordering pizza. They served oven fresh bread along with oil and balsamic vinaigrette which was real good. I am not a big fan of Italian fare so I always order lasagna because it seems a safe choice for me. The serving size was small for a person with my appetite but it was delicious and beautifully presented on the plate. We did order tiramisu for dessert and it was decadently delicious. Fantastic lunch today, I had the chicken salad and my hubby had the seafood salad. Way over delivered for the price! So delicious! We each had an Aperol Spritz and I had a glass of wine, so great! We love the peaceful family vibe and have been coming here for years. The service was excellent. We are happy to pay a little more to support a locally owned gem like this. There is really not a good reason to go to this restaurant any more. They have reduced portions and increased prices so substantially that it seems you are eating in a steak house. The service is always hit or miss. They do nothing to accommodate customer requests. For example - the restaurant was empty. And they sat us in an unpleasant table in the middle of the room. We asked to be moved and they told us no despite the fact we had a reservation. We ordered a dish with potatoes and asked to substitute pasta and it was a $12 up charge ... for pasta with marinara sauce. We ordered a cocktail and it was so strong you could barely drink it - not to mention the waitress spilled about 1/4 of it while putting it on the table. Made reservations at Locanda Del Borgo to avoid the shenanigans of downtown during Mother's Day. As my family arrived, we were about to be seated by the host, however, the manager stated that the table that we were going to be seated at 'wouldn't work'. She argued with the host and the host left since she stated that she will get my family seated at the 'correct' table. As my family and i were waiting to be seated - a family of 7 came in and she seated them before us. As she was attentive to the other groups that came in way after us, my family and i were still waiting to be seated. I found it strange and confusing of why the other families were seated before us when clearly, we arrived way before AND we made reservations. The original host noticed that we have not been seated after waiting around for 30 minutes. He flagged another host and informed him that we were waiting (thank you!) I was hoping that the seating issue was the only issue for the night, however, it got worse. As we were seated, I ordered the meatballs and fried trio (calamari, shrimp, and mini scallops) for appetizers and a bottle of wine. As we ordered a bottle of wine, the waitress informed us that the bottle of wine was '$36'. I never asked for the price and yes we knew how much the cost of the bottle of wine. I was a bit offended since i felt that she didn't think i could afford the bottle of wine.. was that necessary?! Meatballs were basic - basic marinara sauce with meatballs, but we found the trio was delicious. As the appetizers and the bottle of wine was delivered, we placed our orders for dinner and asked the waitress of we could get a basket of bread. As we waited for 20 minutes for the basket of bread, I flagged another waitress for a basket of bread. As another 15 minutes went by, we finally received the basket of bread. By this time, we finished 2 baskets of bread and 2 bottles of wine, and we were still waiting on our dinner entrees. As we waited for over an hour, we finally received our dinner entrees. My sister ordered the special, lobster ravioli - Overly salty and for 5 pieces of ravioli was definitely not worth the price! I ordered the Misto Carne (3 options of meat) - which was a link of sausage and 2 pieces of cut up steak for $27, the meat was overly cooked and super dry My mom ordered the Ravioli with Braised short rib over mushroom sauce which was tasty and the mushroom sauce was on point My grandma ordered the Fettuccine - Overly salty and my grandma couldn't finish her dish My dad ordered the special which was a filet mignon - my dad ordered the meat to be cooked medium rare, however, it was served as medium well. The filet mignon was again dry and salty. After forking up near $400 with having 3 out of 7 dishes being worthy to eat, i do not recommend this restaurant to any of my friends and family due to poor service and poor quality of food. Mine as well went to a chain Italian restaurant and probably had better service and food. Won't be back anytime soon. read more

Locanda Del Borgo is tucked away in a small area in the Hilltop neighborhood. My boyfriend and I decided to try this place for dinner after seeing great reviews on Open Table. We were seated right away, however, we were not greeted by our server until about 20 minutes after we sat down. It took at least 10 minutes just to get a glass of water! It was apparent that she was frazzled and I had overheard that they were short staffed. We ordered the Bruschetta, Short Rib Ravioli, and the Spinach Ricotta Ravioli. The bruschetta was very disappointing. The tomatoes were salty and the basil was sparse. The bread had a weird smoked meat taste as well which made the dish even more unpleasant. The short rib ravioli was mediocre. The pasta was filled with tender short rib and it came accompanied with a mushroom cognac cream sauce. The first few bites were pretty good, but the dish was very one note. The spinach ricotta ravioli was also mediocre. The pasta was filled with the spinach and ricotta and came with a sage cream sauce. It was a rich dish and there was nothing to cut through all the cheese and cream. The service was slow and the restaurant was noisy and dark. We will not be going back anytime soon. read more

One star only because the waiter tried so hard. So if you know me I am not a fan of giving bad reviews. In some cases restaurants/businesses deserve it though. A group of 6 including me came in fairly late on a Tuesday evening and the restaurant wasn't empty but nowhere close to full. We had called ahead to make sure they could accommodate 6 people. Once seated we asked the waiter for specials or if anything wasn't available. He said not to get the special as the kitchen had messed up twice for other customers. No problem. When ordering entrees they informed us they couldn't do pizza as their oven was being fixed after a grease fire last Friday. Frustrating as we had asked if anything wasn't available. After ordering the waiter came back to let us know that the minestrone soup (two of us had ordered it) was also not available. Now getting ridiculous. My sister ordered a pasta instead and I chose nothing as their other soup option (lentil) was not something I wanted. It took forever to get bread and I had to ask for water refills after waiting 5-10 minutes. After that they were better at refilling but come on. With mounting frustration my father asked to speak with the manager. A gentleman came over fairly quickly. He was the least capable person I have ever seen at a restaurant. Instead of trying to make our evening better he gave a halfhearted apology and just walked away. Oy vey. It took over an hour to get our entrees (one was a salad) and the owner got involved after my father was close to leaving the restaurant entirely. The waiter was very apologetic as was the owner but the damage had been done. I would like to think they had one of their worst nights ever. Will I come back? Possibly but with so many other good Italian restaurants Locanda Del Borgo has a lot of work to do. read more

We ordered one margarita pizza, one meatball one glass of wine and one cocktail and a small salad. Our bill was $72 with a 15% tip. The one meatball came cold is a refrigerator. They were rude. The food was mediocre at best and I believe that they are taking advantage of our neighborhood. There is much competition in the area, and I hope that you do not support this business. When we left 45 minutes later, the restaurant was still empty. There is no reason that they could've not set aside a table. We were certainly treated as second class citizens. It was a bit of a drive from my house but it was worth it. We started with the mussel and clam appetizer, very tasty and clams were big. On to the entree', we both order the fish special, one large shrimp, salmon and sea bass. All of the fish was cooked perfectly. The presentation was also great. For the drinks we had a Cab Valle and Zenatto Pinot Grigio. I guess my favorite of the dishes, was the dessert, Tiramisu, is there anything else? It was AMAZING. A friend of ours who used to live in that area a few years ago took us there because he remembered it as an excellent Italian restaurant. Apparently things have changed since then. I took some time to check out their web site. It is interesting. The fairly extensive online wine list bears no resemblance to what you see when you get there which is about 2/3 smaller. The menu is quite limited and unimaginative proclaiming "We make fresh pasta daily!" So the orecchiette is hand made in house? No. The tomato sauce is a strange orange color and comes across like canned tomato soup thickened with a roux. The gnocchi were gummy dumplings without the traditional ridges made by rolling the cut dough on a rigagnocchi or fork. Considering that everything is al a carte the prices are way too high for what you get. We ordered the prosciutto crudo with burrata $22. It was a nice piece of cheese accompanied with some good house made soft bread sticks and a cheap domestic prosciutto sliced way too thick. We brought it home and I plan to make jerky out of it. I ordered a bottle of wine priced at $85 which I knew was a great value. The server brought out a completely different bottle. When I pointed it out she said this is a cheaper one. I would prefer the one I ordered As she opened it she said the price on the wine list was a mistake but they would honor it. When the bill came both bottles were listed but noticed and corrected. I have been remiss in not reviewing this authentic Italian restaurant sooner and everything I say about Locanda Del Borgo can be also said of Cafe Mercato. We've been living in Denver for 5 years now, relocating from the Massachusetts portion Greater Providence RI area. Providence and nearby by Newport host many outstanding Italian restaurants. We acquired experience and knowledge about good to excellent Italian dining, at least in the USA. As transplanted New Englanders now Denverites, we are frequent patrons of both Mercato & Locanda. Both are owned and operated by Executive Chef Giancarlo Macchiarella and are located within 3 miles of each other in the overlapping neighborhoods of Cherry Creek and Lowry. The menus reflect modern contemporary Italian cuisine, the dining experience is always casual but elegant The pasta options are traditional contemporary, my favorites include Puttanesca, Bolognese, Speghettone & Lasagna. There are meat and sea food options that remind me of my mother's unwritten recipes, reflecting a style found in the province of Benevento. Both restaurants offer pizza, the best pizza we've had in Denver. The wine list provides excellent matching options for the entree you select. The martinis and manhattans are outstanding. Both Cafe Mercato and Locanda Del Borgo are 5 star Denver value options for an authentic Italian dining experience. You can find Italian that is less expensive and more expensive but you will not find better value. read more

Came here on a date. Scheduled reservation on Opentable. We called to share that we would be 10 minutes late and there wasn't an issue. The restaurant had great lighting for a date and there was a hint of scent in the air from the wooden oven...nothing unhealthy or concerning...actually it smelled great. Service was prompt and attentive. We did the cheese board appetizer with bread, burrata and prosciutto. Delicious! We were not extremely hungry so ordered a pizza. Yummy!!! Kudos to the server. Good neighborhood spot with honestly made Italian food. Service from Heather was enthusiastic, prompt and friendly. She forgot the extra anchovies for the caesar and didn't bring sugar for the cappuccino until asked, but those are small complaints to her generally 4-5 star service. The food, however, while made with fresh ingredients, wasn't 4-5 stars. The caesar was completely undistiguished: the dressing barely could be tasted. And what is a caesar salad if not mostly about the delicious (but gently applied) dressing? The fritto misto was well made, but came with only an ounce or two of marinara. The wood oven grilled ribeye was the star of the night, properly prepared and served with a delicious porcini mushroom sauce. The half order of ziti came with the mozzarella and a simple, but good, marinara, but the advertized basil was nowhere to be seen. A young montepulciano was a reasonably priced decent wine that went well with everything we had. Finished with a well made cappuccino and a middling chocolate/hazelnut tort (that did have a finely made crust). All-in-all, a good but not great meal. The cost was $100 + 20% tip. Would I go back? . . . Only if I happened to be in the area and didn't have other plans. Pro'lly to check out the gnocchi, since I'm always searching for a great version of that dish. From the other reviews I've seen, it appears that people are generally a little more impressed than I've indicated. So should you give it a try . . . ? My answer? . . . Hmmmmmmm, maybe. read more
