Opened the restaurant on an early date night with my wife on a Saturday night. She had gotten a Groupon for the place so we decided to try it. This restaurant is tucked away in a strip mall in western Omaha. There is a French bakery to the right of it where all their dinner bread comes from, and a brewpub to the left just in case you get a hankering for a beer, since Voltaire is a wine/spirits only place. The dining area has a romantic lounge and semi-informal bistro feel to it: subdued lighting reveals naked wooden tables scattered about with unadorned dining chairs and unassuming wall hangings depicting French icons such as the Eiffel Tower. They have a substantial wine listing as befits a French style restaurant. They have reserve wines priced at $80+ and an extra special reserve listing with nothing below $1000. Our server informed us that Tuesday's include a half-priced discount for wines on their regular wine list! We chose a modest semi-sweet white from the Rhone valley to complement our French dinner. They have a bistro menu option which includes an appetizer, entrée, and dessert for $35, or you can choose to just do an appetizer and entrée for a smaller amount for those with less enlightened palates. We both opted for the former adventure in order to better explore their menu. I ordered the escargot for an appetizer, while my wife got the French onion soup. The escargot was immersed in a butter sauce and had a light, delicate flavor. My wife's soup was a hearty meal unto itself and opened the courses nicely. The complimentary bread from the bakery next door made a nice pairing with both the soup and the butter bath for the escargot. The dinner special for the night was baked pheasant in a cherry cream sauce and an assorted vegetable medley. The poor presentation of this dish caused me to knock off a star on this review. The broccolini, carrots, and sliced roasted potatoes looked like they were thrown on the plate without any care for orderly arrangement. The vegetables seemed to be an afterthought of the dish instead of properly incorporated with the protein. Also, the potatoes were slightly undercooked and unseasoned. Otherwise, the pheasant had a nice gamey flavor and a good cook on it with the skin being nicely crisped. My wife tried the lamb shank with a red wine reduction sauce, which ended up being a much better entrée than mine overall. Very tender meat and perfectly cooked as well. For dessert, I followed tradition with crème brulee and my wife received the highly potent chocolate mousse -- she described it as an overloaded almond joy-like flavor, heavy on the joy I'm sure. The crème brulee was a delicious struggle after such a well-portioned, yet hardy meal (we made the mistake of getting another loaf of bread just to enjoy the escargot butter some more). Recommend to try for date nights, anniversaries, and other events but would suggest leaving the kids at home. read more

I took my boyfriend here for his birthday -- I had been to Le Voltaire in the past but this was his first time. We scheduled a reservation on Open Table for a Friday night at 8:30pm. We arrived a little early and it was fairly busy since the Friday was the start of Omaha Restaurant Week so we sat at the bar after checking in at the host stand for our table to become available. My boyfriend and I sat at the bar for about 10-15 minutes without being greeted or offered a water or drink menu. There were several people moving in and out from behind the bar top with drinks going out to different tables. After awhile I asked a server (female, 45yrs old approx, blonde bob, glasses) if she'd be able to get us a drink menu. She did help us out with this but instead of being courteous or kind about it she proceeded to scold us "oh we don't have a bartender so that's why we are very strict with our reservation times...I'm not your server but I'll get you your drinks...etc." She was also quite rude about the pronunciation of some of the drinks, and while I understand this is supposed to be a nicer French dining establishment not all of your patrons speak fluent French. We were finally seated at a table in the back right room; it was fairly quiet as we had requested. Unfortunately, service did not improve from this point...not because of our server but because of the lack of management. There was no presence of management (at least none that we could tell) and along with the mismanaged bartender situation the servers were all over the place as well. Our server was much kinder, descriptive, and helpful than the lady who had helped us with our drink orders earlier in the evening. The only problem was her tables were all in different rooms (rooms are separated by full walls and doorways) so there was no way she could get to each table in a timely manner while maintaining an eye on customer needs. It took her 10 minutes after being sat to even come into our dining room and greet us, at which point she apologized, grabbed our drink orders, and returned after another 5-10 minutes. Again, I don't believe this was our server's fault. It took us 15-20 minutes to get our appetizers and 30-40 minutes to get our entrees from the time that we ordered them. The side salads that come with each entree (which are just greens and a pre made dressing) didn't arrive at our table until 5 minutes before our entrees came out. Thankfully the food was very good. We had the escargots with cheese as a first appetizer. They came in a dish of 6 and were plentiful in size. For a second appetizer we had the crab and crawfish crab cakes. These were probably my favorite. Living far from the coast makes it difficult to find good crab cakes, much less good seafood in the first place, so the flavor and meatiness was much appreciated. The side salads were also very good and had a honey mustard vinaigrette that wasn't too heavy for a light salad. My boyfriend had the plum creek chicken breast for his entree. The chicken was cooked perfectly and was still juicy and flavorful which appears difficult for many chefs to achieve with bone-in breasts. He really enjoyed the dish. I had the seafood stew -- it contained mussels, salmon, a white fish, crawfish, and potatoes in an aromatic seafood broth. We ended our meal after a few bites from our entrees since we had filled up on the appetizers and bread (I'm a sucker for carbs!) The wait for the check was equally as tedious. From the time that our entrees were brought to us our server never came in to check if we needed anything (water refills) except for once, after about 5 minutes into our entrees. So it took an additional 15-20 minutes of sitting around after completing our meal to have our server bring us a check and the boxes. When I asked to speak with a manager to discuss our concerns a gentleman whom we had thought was a server from another table/section came over to speak with us. Nic Henke (he gave us his business card) turned out to be the general manager but I'm not so certain that should be the case if he can't manage a restaurant at 8:30pm on a Friday evening. His only answer for us was "I'm sorry, sometimes the ball drops and things don't go the right way, so all I have to offer is an apology." Our experience from last night was truly saddening because the chef at Le Voltaire creates some of the most decadent and flavorful French dishes you can find in the Omaha area; however, it can barely make up for the serious lack in management. The last time I came here was over 3-4 years ago but I remember the experience being much better. I recommend coming here to eat the food if you've never been because at the end of the day good food is still good food, however don't get your hopes up when it comes to the service, and expect to be there for 2 hours at least for a standard dinner not including desserts or cocktails. read more

I'm a bit hesitant to write this review only because I still feel like this place is one of the best kept secrets in Omaha. On a recent Friday afternoon I met up with some girlfriends for lunch. By girlfriends, I mean retired women of leisure who have made their mark on society but now have nothing but time for savoring the joys of life. Thus, I took the afternoon off, knowing that there would be day-drinking (if you can call sipping on higher caliber reds that compliment your meal as day-drinking) and the savoring of foods, rather than the normal squeeze-in-a-meal-while-working-on-your-computer type of situation. What I noticed immediately: welcome to Le Voltaire, where Cedric and Desarae (as if we're actual long-time friends) have created an atmosphere of community. Community is the only way to describe my 2+ hour dining experience on this Friday afternoon (although you can get in and out much more quickly, if you want). Meet us. Know us. Tell us your story. So while I can wax poetic about the meal I actually consumed, enough Yelpers have done so, so I refrain. Instead I give five stars for the service...for the community..for the hours I'll never get back but don't want to get back...for forcing us to stop, to converse, to connect. Communing around a table of food (and wine) gives us as opportunity to just be, get to know each other, and recall that we really do live in a lovely place and Cedric and Desarae has created a space to remind us. We'd been wanting to try this place for awhile and finally made reservations. Where to start on the review....I understand French dining is all about the experience and not rushing people in and out but the service was ridiculously slow. It appeared to be just our waitress. The table next to us was seated after us but got bread, soup, and salad before we were served even bread. At the end of the meal we ordered dessert and coffee. The dessert was brought out by the kitchen and we had it completely finished before our waitress got around to bringing the coffee. The other thing that was annoying was that we asked about the bistro menu but didn't specifically order it. The waitress basically said she would apply the combination if it made sense. We should have asked made sense for who? She did the least expense of our two entrees and did not do the bistro menu that included a dessert even though we had a dessert so by using the bistro combination we actually paid over $10 MORE than not doing the special! All of that was especially annoying because the food was sooo good. I had the fish special in parchment paper and it just melted in my mouth. My husband had the stew and it so fragrant and hearty. The appetizer we had was duck, bacon,feta caramelized onion flatbread - it sounded odd enough that we had to try it. The flavor combination was surprising in a good way. Crust was a bit on the soft side, I prefer a crunchy flatbread crust but that was the only minor off note in the whole meal. The mocha dessert with coffee ice cream was perfect finish (would have only been better if our coffee had been served with it!) So although the food was outstanding, we will hesitate to go back given the horribly slow service, there are just too many wonderful other places to eat in Omaha that are able to have the service be at the same level as the food. read more

Our experience was a roller coaster with some ups and downs. I do not each much at one sitting, so I had the crab cakes from the appetizer menu. I used to live in Maryland, so I'm used to the heavenly Chesapeake Blue Crabs, catch of the day. Perhaps it's not fair so use that the standard by which I measure all others. But...I do. And the crab cakes at Le Voltaire are good, but they do not measure up. They are not excellent. The flavor of the crab was bland, the seasoning was mediocre. But the size was perfect. Likewise, my companion is picky about his French onion soup, and he declared this IS excellent. His ribeye was not cooked correctly, though. He asked for medium well, and it came out rare. So my crab cakes got cold, as I waited for his steak to come back before continuing eating. Our profiterolles were awesome. We may not order anything else, but we will be back for the profiterolles. The service was excellent, too. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and very attentive without being obnoxious...not too much, not too little, met our needs without interrupting our conversation or our chewing. The person we were seated next to was extremely loud in his speaking to the folks at the table on the other side of him...who also seemed to want this stranger to shut up and let them have their own conversation. Until he left, we were unable to converse. The staff should have asked him to speak more quietly. But they called him by name, so I guess he was a regular; it seemed they would rather upset others than risk offending him. We feel like our needs will not be cared about fully until we, too, become regulars. read more

Solid French cuisine. Unassuming place located in a strip mall, but don't let that fool you as this place has some legit French Cuisine going on! Not a large space, but nicely decorated and inviting. Started out with some good wine and the escargot to kick things off. Served in butter with cheese melted over the top, it was delicious! For my main course I had the filet, served with mashed potatoes and vegetables. The filet was cooked a perfect medium rare, and was tender and juicy. Overall, a great meal and experience. I went there for lunch and ordered the french onion soup which was really good, it is the only reason why they are getting three stars. I also had a chicken caesar salad which I returned twice. The first time it came out, I got searing hot whole chicken breast on top of a already wilted salad, I was kind of confused by this because.....how can you fail at a caesar salad? I'm given a fork and I guess expected to cut the really freaking hot chicken myself. So I return it only for it to come back lazily sliced up and tossed back on the already greasy wilted salad, at this point my time is up and I have to leave so I return it for a refund. When they asked why I was returning my salad I was honest told them it was greasy and unappealing. The bartender informs me that all their chicken is organic and local which is all well and good but it still doesn't solve the fact that I don't want my caesar salad dressed in grease and a restaurant of their caliber shouldn't be so lazy in their presentation. read more

Everything I have tasted has been exquisite. My daughter and I dined on the cheese plate prior to our meal and it included 6 samples of cheeses with a large supply of bread. The baguette was fresh and with the perfect crunch. My daughter inhaled the delicious, very garlicy escargot. I loved the french onion soup as well. Late night stop to this place and I have to say, for what we ordered we had some pretty good portions. But for those people saying portions are small...well...that's french cuisine for you. Its not to be mistaken for Italian where they give you 2 lbs of food. French cuisine is usually about being not huge portioned but being huge in taste and elegance. Anyways we went here and started with the escargo(snails) and the were good and tender and as for the portion...there were six of them and that's how they usually come. I got my entree on with a medium rare steak and french fries...not very French but my steak was perfect and the fries were fries. Good seasoning on all fronts and an easy to cut steak. My Special Lady Friend got the Bouillabaisse de Marseille which byher reaction was good but not mind-blowing. She still prefers the one offered at Spezia. It tasted good to me but I'll let her tend to that issue on her review. We finished up with the bread pudding for me and the creme brulee for her. Mine was pretty good, the flavor of the day being cranberry. It was well flavored and the berries really popped with goodness. As for My Special Lady Friend, she had the brulee which was good but...they burnt a lil bit of the sugar on top which was a lil bit of a bummer and once again I leave the impact of that to her review of this place. So all in all it was good and the portions for what we ordered were very good and the flavors were on. My friends and I picked this restaurant to try during Omaha Restaurant Week. We were definitely amazed by the food quality here. We each started off with some escargot which was searing hot (i couldn't wait, way too hungry). Next was the salad, then i got some ridiculous beef cheeks that were just falling apart and packed a punch of flavor. There was complete silence during the entree portion of our meal. We were completely focused on the food. We also shared a nice bottle of wine to enjoy throughout our meal. Overall, I would dine here again. We visited Le Voltaire to celebrate our anniversary. It was Berkshire Hathaway weekend and the restaurant was very busy, but the waitstaff was well prepared and handled the busy restaurant without missing a beat. We each ordered from the $35, 3 course prix fixe menu and thought it was great. We both sprang for the filet mignon and found it to be totally worth the $10 upcharge. Our sever was fantastic and and the end of the evening we mentioned it was our anniversary and she chided us for not telling her earlier and brought over two complimentary glasses of champagne. It was such a sweet gesture and we really appreciated it. The excellent service combined with the truly delicious food made this a very memorable dining experience. read more

This place is still 5 stars in my book! Recently went there with another couple about a month ago and everything was just as I remembered it. The ONLY thing that was a little annoying was that (for a Tuesday night) it was exceptionally slow. Part of me believes they did that on purpose so we could enjoy our evening and not feel rushed, but the hungry/impatient part of me believes they had one person running the kitchen for the entire restaurant. Our waiter overhead my friend and I talking about how much we liked sissy wines (moscato, etc.) and he presented us with two glasses of blended wine to resemble moscato for free. Love the bistro menu for lunch and dinner. I can indulge my French-tooth here to my heart's content. Food is consistent and always prepared in a traditional way from scratch, nothing mass produced or pre-made frozen. This is not fast dining mind you. Don't come here when you have only a half hour. With multi-course meals, service is critical so that you do not have plates piling up at the table and your entree cools as you hurry to finish your starter. Their service is always timed appropriately. Occasionally at lunch service can lean toward a bit slow if the dining room fills up at once. Cocktails and wine choices are always satisfying. read more

We finally decided to try Le Voltaire this past weekend and it was everything I had heard it would be. The ambiance is quaint and rather intimate--perfect for a birthday dinner with my "bae." We had a reservation and were seated promptly. Our server, Elizabeth, stopped by immediately to bring us waters and tell us about the specials for the night. She was very knowledgeable and polite with us as we butchered each French word on the menu. I decided to start with the French Onion soup--how could I not? And Jim started with the Duck Confit. The soup was perfectly hot, but not burn the roof of your mouth hot that typically happens when anything is topped with cheese and broiled--and I really appreciated being able to mash immediately when it came out. It was very good and next time I may even have to opt for a bowl. Jim really enjoyed his duck. Its served on thin bread with balsamic and arugula. I wish I could tell you more about it, but before I could sneak a try, Jim had devoured it. For entrees, I had the Shrimp and Scallop Pasta. It was amazing. Scallops cooked perfectly and the homemade pasta was outstanding. The sauce was a cream-tomato that I made sure to sop up with the complimentary bread. As good as my meal was, Jim's Seafood Stew was the real standout of the evening! The broth was delicious and though I didn't try each piece of fish in there, Jim said all of it was cooked wonderfully and one of the best meals he has had--pretty big surprise from a typical steak order-er. After all the food, we couldn't fit in any dessert, but we asked if any would travel well for us to take home. Elizabeth enthusiastically recommended the Chocolate Mousse, and we are so glad we did! Despite not having the room, we managed to eat it within minutes of getting home--whoops! Our 2 appetizers, entrees, desserts, 2 glass of wine and 2 beers came out to $100--quite practical for the quality you are getting...and even the quantity, as I said we were both very full. With outstanding food, wonderful service this place is a solid 5-star restaurant that I know we will be back to soon. read more

This was one of the most incredible dining experiences in Omaha. Even though the restaurant is in a strip mall location, the inside of the restaurant transports you to France. The complimentary baguette was fantastic. We ordered the escargot appetizer, which was amazing as well. You'll want to use the baguette to soak up the delicious leftover garlic butter. I ordered the lamb shank, which was a special on the menu. It was the best lamb I've ever had. The meat was extremely tender and melted in my mouth. It came with vegetables and potatoes on the side, which were also fantastic. The service was amazing and they followed all COVD protocols. The tables were spaced out, all workers had masks, it was great to see! Thank you for this incredible experience. We will definitely be back soon! read more

We went here to use a groupon that we'd picked up on a whim. The decor is very subtly elegant, and the restaurant as a whole was very clean and intimate. It was very softly lit and would be a great date restaurant if your guy or gal is into the classical romantic dinner thing. I've no complaints about the service. We were seated quickly and waited on by servers who knew the menu and gladly answered our questions, when we had them. The wine was excellent, as was the selection. Not much else to say about that. The meal was the low-point of the evening. The portions are embarassingly small on some dishes, while others are a veritable mountain of food. The scallops were tasty, but very scant and the mango chutney on them seemed to throw the dish off (and since it came with no side, this was a bad thing). The steak-frites, meanwhile, came with plenty of "frites" and was more than my dear mother could eat (no big-meat-mom jokes, please). After eating our meals, we couldn't help but feel a bit disappointed, given the amount of money that it (would have) cost us (without the groupon). Luckily, the dessert came to the restaurant's rescue! The creme brulee was literally the best I've ever tasted. If I could have, I would have ordered it as my appetizer, meal AND dessert. So good. On balance, then, three stars. The meals simply weren't good enough to warrant anything more, and honestly held the restaurant back. If this place wasn't on the other side of town from Dario's Brasserie, I'd recommend getting your French-food-fix (alliteration up in this bizzle) there, and then swinging in to Le Voltaire for some great wine and dessert. Alas, dinner is more important to me than dessert, though. So I recommend anyone craving French food, who doesn't care about fancy pretense, to head to Dario's instead. That said, if you in the area Le Voltaire isn't a bad choice (provided you've got a half-off Groupon in your wallet). read more

Wow wow wow my sister and I came in just as a night away from the kids. We called and made last minute reservations which they were very helpful with. We had a cute table in the front part of the restaurant. The hostess was so helpful and throughout the night we saw her walking around clearing tables and filling up glasses! Our waiter was the greatest ! I have never had service like here . He helped explaining the menu and was our drinks were never empty. I actually ordered a mimosa and he noticed it wasn't bubbling like it should and got me a new one. He apologized for the flat Champagne. I honestly didn't notice it was flat but once I had the new one I could tell. Just the attention to details that this place has makes it worth the stop. We had appetizers entrées and dessert all of which were perfect. Even our Togo boxes were labeled and given details on what's inside. Will be back again and again. I have not eaten French food in Nebraska before so was a bit nervous. But after researching online I was confident of having a good experience and was pleasantly surprised. I would highly suggest making a reservation for dinner and was happy I had. The place was packed on Saturday night. We started with Escargot which was simply presented with light garlic butter and optional blue cheese and almonds. For mains I had a seafood medley and my wife had the nightly special Monk fish, both dishes were flawless and simple. Fortunately the dishes were not too creamy and cheesy as often is the case when eating French food out of France. The presentation was colorful and the portions were sturdy but not excessive. The broth on the seafood medley was tangy and the perfect accompaniment to my dish. I forgot to mention the house salad was fantastic, I'm not a huge fan of spinach salads but the dressing forced me to love the dish. The dressing consisted of oil and vinegar with a hint of lemon. The restaurant has tasteful decor and a small but cozy bar. The only tacky item was the giant plastic dusty tree which lay in wait as you go to the toilet. It takes up half of the bathrooms hallway which is narrow enough to begin with. Throw that atrocity out, the establishment is far too good for cheap plastic foliage. On a final note our server was highly attentive without being pressuring or over the top. This skill is a fine art to master especially here in the Midwest. Also it was pleasant to have time to enjoy your food by individual courses without having dishes thrown on the table before completion of the previous. Long past due review. This place is one of my favorite restaurants in Omaha. The food always brings a smile to my face. Personal favorites are the Bouillabase and Moules Frites. The food is always fresh and the waiters and waitresses are so knowledgeable about the food. Our most recent experience was with the guy waiter (I can't recall his name), but his attention to detail is impeccable - clearing the table, keeping water filled, timing our appetizers and entrees perfectly, etc. Super friendly. Unfortunately, Open Table restricts the amount one can write. I tried reviewing there. We were seated promptly but were never assigned waitstaff so we had to ask after 15 minutes for someone to wait on us. We used a "Groupon" and ordered the crabcakes and vegetable terrine after choosing the "bistro menu" which is a fixed price for three courses. The crabcakes were more cake than crab but not unpleasant. The terrine was small in quantity but tasty. Salads were fine although I ordered the addition of blue cheese and almonds on mine and it was served on both. Entrees were the scallops with mange salsa, which were well cooked but the salsa overwhelmed the flavor of the scallops. I had the steak frites, which was a nice cut of ribeye, tender, cooked to order, however, the "frites" were right out of a bag, which is a huge disappointment for what could be a top-notch French bistro. Don't serve me fries that are frozen and coated with some seasoning?? Twice fried, fresh cut fries are the only option. And they were served with no aioli, only Dijon Mustard. The desserts were the best part of the meal, a perfect cream brulee and chocolate cake with a buttercream filling and chocolate ganache. Both were very good. The waitstaff was somewhat unprofessional. Two of the waitresses did much too much "chit chatting" with their customers while others waited for service. Our waiter told us that because of the snaffu with our being seated then ignored, he would take off the cost of our dessert. He never did. In as much as we really wanted to love this place, it turned out to be just mediocre and no where near as good as other French restaurants in Omaha. We are very knowledgeable about French cuisine having just returned from France where we have visited numerous times. First impression, the decor and ambience are not inviting whatsoever. The carpets are old and soiled with traffic wear and tear. The service was OK. Not outstanding or above and beyond just not real professional. The food itself was good. Again, OK just not great. Tucked in an unassuming strip mall lies a "gem" for French culinary delights! Cozy country French atmosphere. Service was very attentive and hospitable. We ordered several house specialty cocktails and appetizers that were fantastic! The escargot were large, tender and deliciously garlicky. Brie toast with cherries was also a winner. Fois Gras was good, but sliced and served on toast points was not the best... I prefer the whole liver in a port wine reduction, with cherries and toast on the side. Main of steak Diane was awesome! Nutella and Banana crepes were "ok". They were served cold and had a drizzle of Hershey's chocolate syrup in top... really Hershey's syrup???? Still 5 stars, and there is a great French bakery next door. In hit that next visit to Omaha. Great place that is not too hard on the wallet. Highly recommend for Froncofiles. read more

Came here a few months ago with my girlfriend. Loved it. My girlfriend loved it even more. Reminds me of food that Gordon Ramsey would cook and present in his shows. My salmon could have used a little more sauce, but everything else was perfect! (maybe the sauce was the perfect serving for all I know!) I look forward to my next visit, and what kinds of creative, artistic, and flavorful dishes they will have since they actually have a chef with talent! read more

Very good French food at extremely reasonable prices. In authentic French fashion, the service is sometimes a slower and less friendly than Americans are accustomed to, yet remarkably knowledgeable. Overall, definitely one of the best restaurants in west Omaha. The bakery next door (owned and operated by the same chef) is quite good as well. read more

My husband surprised with a dinner at Le Voltaire for my birthday! The cozy atmosphere was perfect. I ordered a wine per recommendation from our very knowledgeable waitress. After looking at the menu, I was having trouble deciding on what to order, but ultimately decided on the French Onion Soup and Filet Mignon Boeuf! The soup was fantastic and about the best French Onion Soup I have had. My husband ordered the lobster bisque and it was equally delicious. My main course was perfectly cooked and had a delightful brandy sauce. I was very pleased!! We finished our meals with coffee and Chocolate Mousse, which was gigantic (easily could have been shared).
