The chocolate cake is soooo delicious! I have bought this a number of times. Not sure why the 9" is more moist than the 6" but it is. I prefer moist but husband thought 6" was just as good. I have a story that speaks to the "good and bad" of their customer service. I ordered a pecan pie for Christmas dinner to be picked up the day before. It was paid for, but when I went to pick it up, the manager came out and said that one of the employees had sold my pie to another customer. But he assured me that they would bake me another one and it would be delivered in time (we were leaving for Christmas Eve dinner at 5:00 that evening). Sure enough a little before 5:00 they delivered the pie. To top it off the pie came with complimentary thumbprint cookies. It made our daughter super happy! read more

I ordered a chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream frosting and chocolate mouse filling for my 30th Birthday it was terrible. The cake was awful so dry and the buttercream tasted like unsalted butter that was frozen in a huge block to my cake. The frosting wasn't sweet or had any flavor at all it added nothing to the cake. The only thing good about it was the mouse filling which myself and my family ate and we threw out the rest. I am glad their are bakeries that will make a gluten free cake for a milestone birthday but I have had better at many other gluten free bakeries that didn't make my non-gluten free friends and family turn their nose up. I was also charged over $75 dollars for a ten inch cake which I have since found out was astronomical compared to other bakeries. Don't bother ordering from them especially for a special occasion you won't be happy. read more

Tried this place again thinking that maybe a year would help their customer service and general management...I was wrong!!! The owner was there this time and really doesn't seem like she cares about the reputation of her business, or about the customer at all! I tried to order their lunch combo which lets you pick a 1/2 sandwich from their menu, and a soup or salad. I tried to order a panini with ham and cheese & a soup, but the girl helping me struggled with the order and the computer for a few minutes before telling me that "the system wouldn't let her order that combination and I had to pick something else". At this point I remembered why I was so frustrated with them the last time I tried eating there. One redeeming fact - when you finally get your order, the food isn't all that bad, even though it tends to be inconsistent. First, I'm Asian but sometimes I am just tired of going to Asian bakeries so thank goodness there is a western boutique bakery in the Irvine-Costa Mesa-Newport area that isn't a Corner Bakery or the like. Perhaps the lack of choices in the area inflates my rating by half a star but overall the cakes are quite good. I enjoyed the Boston Cream and the family liked the Green Tea cake. LC also serves their cakes by the slice which is a pretty good idea but be aware that some less popular flavors that week may be sitting the cabinet over the weekend and so the cake may be dry. This was my experience the first time I tried a slice of tiramisu; the second time it was well above average -- moist and with a strong kick of espresso. Overall, the cakes are well above average and not cloyingly sweet as contrasted with French's up the street or the Gelsons. read more

i love this place. this review is only based on baked goods/cakes, not the actual cafe though. i ordered two red velvet cakes and both were a big hit. the red velvet is really moist and the cream cheese filling between layers isn't too thick. i could probably do with less cream cheese frosting on top, but i think it has to be that thick to cover the whole cake. it's two bucks to get writing on top and it's decorated with glitter on top. super cute. the carrot cake cupcakes are also quite yummy, as well as the lemon bars and macaroons. there is a variety of flavors for the macaroons. i like the pistachio myself. service here is really great. i was able to get a 6-in. red velvet cake same day and a 9-in. w/ one-day advance. prices are reasonable. i think it was about 45 bucks for the 9-in. and maybe 26 bucks for the 6-in. staff is really helpful and friendly as well. i have to remember to try the coffee here. the monkey bread, bread pudding and earl grey shortbread cookies also look good. definitely coming back here if i need cakes asap. read more

I used to live in Irvine for a long time and I'm in the area most weekends. Today is my first time, stopping in to get breakfast for my babe. The wait was kind of a bummer because they really had one person doing it all. Making coffee, telling the cooks what I got, writing a message on a cake for the person in front of me, taking the money... Poor gal. They're a breakfast place so I'm bummed they don't have half n half. If you know your dairy, you know that the higher fat content goes, the lower the lactose... Thus why I prefer half n half or whipping cream. They have soy or almond milk for vegans. All in all the breakfast sandwiches were good. Didn't take too long. Hash browns on point. SUPER crispy. Service was just okay. When someone says thank you I feel like you should respond in hopes that they return... I don't think I will. Fine food but just ... Regular... When you walk into the bakery and see the girl behind the counter playing with her hair, running her fingers through it and then put it in a pony tail, your cookies no longer look very appetizing. OMG! so i called in to order a Red Velvet birthday cake about 2 weeks ago for my partners birthday.... and as the cake is being cut and everyone is there.... we ended up with a white plain cake... and i payed more then $50 for this cake......that freaking pissed me off because i called them and the answer they gave me was...bring the cake back... i told them dude its 9pm and I'm here witht he guest and i cant leave.....plus this was their mistake.... the next day i went and i had to wait for about an hour for someone to give me y money back...the owner showed up after 45 minutes of arguing on the phone...and just gave me the money.... when i first got there they were like... a co-worker referred me to this bakery, which is a block away from me. I needed cake to plan aparty and wanted something out of the norm. I was going to get cupcakes ar Sprinkle but instead was lead to this really cute bakery. I was really impressed with the decor and how inviting this shop is. The service very helpful and detailed. The Chocolate Almond croisant is amazing and made me wanting more. Also tried a desert that looked like a donut, dipped in chocolate....it needed to be warmed up in the microwave for 10 sec. to melt the chocolate inside. Yet again, was AMAZING! The owner let me sample a few of her cakes. She emphasized the her pasteries had a european flair to it, so it was not too sweet and the icing is not overbearing because of the product that they use. My family came in hoping for some good food and quality baked goods. We ordered breakfast and decided we would order our baked goods after. The service was terrible. The person at the counter took someone who walked to the front of the line after my wife stepped up to the register. We were told it would take a little time for our drinks because the person who had been allowed service without waiting had ordered 8 drinks. They then said they would bring our drinks out. 15 minutes later my wife went in after seeing people who had been behind her in line getting their drinks. Ours were still not made. We got our food and the toast was burnt. The french toast was burnt on the bottom and the omlette was overcooked and missing items. I asked for the missing ingredient and received a side of avacado that had black streaks all the way through it. The potatos were partially cooked and the turkey for our omlette was sliced lunch meat. Add to this that all the food was cold it was a true dissapointment. one days, i nom nom nommed on all of their macaroons. like other peoples, my favorites is the pistachio. the filling tastes like marzipan and it goes well with the cookies. the pink jam one is really sweet but what can a cat expect? it says jam. the chocolate one may seems like it could be really sweet but the taste is prominents yet mellow. thinks chocolate ganache meets dark chocolate. the intensity of the other flavors could be stepped up a bit buts the fact that i can finds french macaroons nearby makes me a happy cat. i returns the following week to eat my favorite macaroons and gots a lemon meringue tart too. the size might be intimidating for a cat to nom nom nom in one sittings but wait until you're hungries enough and you can does it. the meringue is fluffy, the lemon filling is creamy and has just the right amount of tart, and the crust is buttery and tastes like a shortbreads. read more

It is in a small shopping center located by and Islands. The bakery has cookies, cakes, misc. treats galore. red velvet = 3 stars carrot cake = 5 stars french macarons = 4 stars croissants = 5 stars ah, layer cake. i go here frequently for pastries. for whatever reason i'm not impressed with the bakeries in orange county. i first came here for the red velvet cake. my friend got one for my bday and it was pretty tasty -- cake was moist and dense and the frosting good , but could have been great if it had more of a cream cheese flavor, i think it was made from butter cream and cream cheese, so it is very heavy and more on the butter side. i would give it 3 stars when i first came here they didn't have french macarons, then one day i walked in and there was a rainbow of macarons next to the cakes. i was dying bc i had recently become obsessed with macrons (bouchon/paulette), but didn't know where to find them in orange county, all the places i found were in LA, SF or NY. they were pretty tasty for being in "orange county". the cookie is a little more airy than i would like, but it's great for a quick fix. some of the fillings are good and others i can do w/out. sometimes if i don't like the filling, i'll just wipe it off and eat the cooke, nom nom nom. the raspberry, pistachio and vanilla all pretty much taste the same. i use to like the salted caramel, but then they decided to mix the caramel with butter cream and you couldn't taste the caramel as much anymore. sad day, i know. the raspberry ganache is good and has a nice different flavor combination. although you can't eat too many of this flavor like the other flavors. the hazelnut has a great flavor. the blueberry has a good cookie, but not a fan of the inside (has bits of blueberry, but it ruins the consistency of the filling) another thing about the macarons is that they don't seem to be made consistently, some days they are really small and tall (really airy/puffy) and other days they are more moist and dense. although it doesn't stop me from eating them, either way! another fav at layer cake are the croissants. they make them really well, they are buttery/soft on the inside and have great crunch and flaky layers on the outside. i personally like them more than the croissants at champagne bakery. definite 5 stars. i emailed the owner one time trying to get her to make the [to die for] pretzel croissant [that i had at city bakery in nyc], but she tells me they tried making it a while back and it didnt' sell well -- what?!?!? OC, are you crazy? the pretzel croissant is the BEST invention EVER. it must have been before i moved to OC. i'm going to keep pressing the issue and maybe i'll create a petition for it :) other things i've tried: banana tart -- good, but something lacking (almost like they didn't use salt during baking to bring out the flavors, it was bland banana pudding and crust). carrot cake -- this is pretty good. i would say better than the red velvet bc the frosting is more cream cheesy :) and it doesn't have nuts! i dislike nuts in my carrot cake. read more

Every time I order any cakes from here they are truly done to perfection. Most places are either good with design but then the cake is dry or the design is not great and the cake nice and moist. Layer cake always creates a masterpiece and they always deliver on the promise of an amazing tasting cake. Their prices are fair and not over inflated like most places, you don't have to take out a loan to get a great birthday cake from this location. They usually recommend me to send them some designs I like and they go from there, they work through email and they really try to make the whole experience as convenient as possible for their patrons. They have done baby showers, bridal showers, birthday parties, and gender reveals, all of which turned out amazing. I would never think of going anywhere else, all my guests are always in love with the cakes. If you need a cake this is your place. read more

I was looking for a beautiful cake for my sister's graduation party and because of the yelp reviews and their website, I chose Layer Cake Bakery. I ordered the cake online through their "contact us" link and was happy with the email correspondence from Liz confirming my order. The cake was prepared exactly as I had ordered and completed on time. I sent my dad to pick it up because it was way out of the way for me. He said the bakery smelled delicious :-) The cake was so pretty and even had glitter on the top but I wasn't as happy with the taste. The cake was really soggy like tres leche which is fine by me, but it wasn't as yummy as tres leche. I guess I really wished it was a buttermilk cake instead.
