My friend took me to La Mer for my birthday on Saturday 8/20/22. It was my first time and I was excited to have the La Mer experience. We were seated facing the House Without a Key--and enjoyed the Hawaiian music. Once the entertainment was done--the ambiance became even more subdued--nice! We had the $245 tasting menu. If you can, I'd recommend the splurge on the special person in your life. Or on yourself. It's a lovely memory--the ambiance, the beautiful plating and creative flavor profiles. And if you love tasting a variety of dishes--this is the way to go. The portions satisfied, but if you have a larger appetite--they offer bread throughout the meal. My friend's favorite was the soft, moist Porcini sour dough, I liked the slightly sweet, airy popover-like Brioche. Third option was the baguette. The bread comes with tomato or plain butter. My favorite dish was the Roasted Scallop, Cuttlefish Leaf, Lobster Consommé. The Lobster Consommé smelled so good and tasted delicious! The scallop was sweet and tender. I've never had calamari sliced paper thin-- tender absorbing the Lobster Consommé--such yumminess! And the salty goodness of the caviar pearls. (Rolled eyes with a smile!). Excellent service with multiple people attending to the table. At the end of dessert they bring out a plate of little treats, including Macraron, and a small Halekulani favor box with a little bag of chocolate covered macadamia nuts. We came to La Mer to celebrate my birthday and our anniversary. We ordered the tasting menu and the wire pairing. Presentation was amazing, food was delicious and service is impeccable. My wife and I went to La Mer for our anniversary. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Food was quite good although not as good as other fine dining establishments. But the service was excellent and better better than some of their peers. Also, the ocean and beach views cannot be beat. I really looked forward to dining at La Mer. My companion and I went there on a Wednesday, and only a few tables were taken. Service was excellent from three waiters, one poured our wine, the others presented us with the finest cuisine from the Menu Dégustation (tasting menu). All courses were outstanding. I am knowledgeable about wine, and ordered a half bottle of fine French Bordeaux. We each drank a glass of champagne as our apéritif. I also ordered two glasses of Pouilly Fuissé to match one of the courses. I drank most of the wine, my companion limited herself to two glasses. She was driving so I could drink more. Heard this was the best restaurant in Oahu so I had to check it out for myself. I was able to get a reservation a month and a half in advance. When my party arrived to the restaurant, we were promptly seated and greeted by each waitstaff. I love how there are no windows and you can thoroughly enjoy the view. Absolutely breathtaking watching the sunset while having dinner here. As a table we decided to do the course menu (which everyone must partake) and they were able to accommodate my friend who was a pescatarian. Drinks were fantastic (may even be on my top 3 places around the world) and everything tasted refreshing and strong. Everything was delicious (5/5), but what stood out the most for me was the lobster. It is extremely hard to not under cook nor over cook lobster but this place somehow hit it right on. The scallops were also phenomenal and there was not even a grain of sand in any of my bites. Another hard ingredient to perfect yet well executed here. I would recommend arriving 15 minutes prior to your reservation since it is pretty easy to get lost trying to find this restaurant in the hotel. Very impressed with La Mer - from the food to the service, truly an elegant and delicious experience you'll remember. Definitely dress to impress...but honestly as long as you are not in a t-shirt, shorts, or sneakers you are probably ok. Men don't really need the blazer/jacket...lots of "aloha shirts" as the website calls them. Menu can generally be what you make it - since they do provide la carte options and prices, but most guests do one of the two pre-set options - Menu Degustation ($245) or Menu du Soir ($180). I'd encourage you to do your research on both and weigh which tastes/items work for the table - as they kindly ask the entire table order the same menu to ensure a natural/seamless progression throughout. The three of us did the Menu du Soir, lots of Foie Gras on the Degustation and to be honest we were full after the du Soir. We almost added the filet from the Degustation but in the end we're glad we did not. We did customize a little bit, and each chose one of each of the three dessert options and shared those at the table. For cocktails, they had 5-8 options - each cost $20. Overheard others ordering wine that were very pleased with the wine menu - glass, half bottle, and full bottle options...we admittedly didn't look at this since the strawberry lilikoi martini drink (forget the name) was so good! Yes, it's expensive, but the price point makes sense with the quality and presentation of the food, and the impeccable service. I'm talking pull your chair out, waiters in jackets/ties, bread platter with softened French butter, fresh napkins each time you get up for the restroom, a walk to the restroom, roses in the ladies' drinks, etc. Would absolutely come back, and recommend this place to anyone and everyone. My first time experiencing a fancy set course meal so I was expecting to leave a little hungry but I was so wrong. Everything that they serve you is timed in a way that you really get to enjoy your food and savor each bite. By the time I got to the steak I was already getting full. Really enjoyed the roasted scallop with cuttlefish and lobster consommé. The broth had a such a clean and smooth flavor that is just unforgettable. I had the good fortune to eat at this restaurant on my 1st night arriving on the island. Impeccable service and attention to detail from the beginning to end. This is one of those establishments that oozes old world elegance and charm. Factor in the tropical breeze coming in from the Pacific. Duck has always been my favorite dish at French restaurants, and I order it at every one I go to. Their duck breast in terms of taste and especially texture was flawless. I was floored. I had stumbled on to one of the best French restaurants, not in Los Angeles, not in Vegas, but rather on an island! The souffle came with three different sauces and the crunchy chocolate mini balls to add. The chocolate bar that I do not know the name of was decadent and delicious. Gold flakes were the literal icing on the cake. They also give complementary white boxes of their creative desserts to take home. Ours had a lilac hard candy shell with the inside of chocolate and a whole macadamia nut spiced up with pop rocks as a surprise. Their little gestures here and there make the entire experience worth it and special. I get why La Mer is so well-known. The taste in each of the dishes is perfect in its balance and flavor. No overly salted or stuffed feelings afterwards. Testament to how seriously good this place is? I ate here a 2nd time within the same week. Added story: I was in the bathroom when a drunken lady came charging in with the manager in tow insisting that she had lost her diamond ring in the bathroom. Upon entering this restaurant, we were kindly escorted to our table by staff, who were gracious and welcoming. Our servers treated us with the utmost attentiveness and respect, and we never wanted for anything. If our water ran out, one of the staff refilled it immediately. They adjusted our plates for us to make room for the dishes to be served, took care to explain the menu thoroughly, and helped us with ordering, giving recommendations when asked. Along the course of our meal, we were treated to multiple courtesy gifts such as an appetizer and parting gifts. My absolute favorite thing about La Mer was a tie between the wonderful and caring service, and the beautiful ambiance. The restaurant was well-lit, and our table was located near the beautiful windows, which gave us a gorgeous view of the beach as well as the performers below. It was an incredibly romantic night, and I was so blown away by the excellent service that it took my focus off of the food! But not to worry. They have many delicious options, all of which are cooked beautifully. I detest zucchini, and yet the zucchini dish I ate here (out of a desire to be adventurous) was delicious! The meat was cooked perfectly to taste, and seasoned to a degree we couldn't believe. We have never tried food this delicious before! Its ambience of the hotel is very traditional but it definitely has this one mystic or charm about it that distinguish this hotel from any other hotel in Waikiki or Hawaii in general. The feeling is just pure luxurious yet elegance that follows after. We were seated in the outer section of the restaurant that was Oceanview but also had great view of the Diamond Head Mountain. The start was absolutely flawless with our waiter and he has been working at the restaurant for over 5 years. I cannot remember his name since I did wine pairing to enjoy the night. The start of the meal was just exciting as the appetizer going into the main dish was nothing but a surprised but full of umami experience. I would say I enjoyed every single dish of the night and what I particularly appreciated was the execution of each dish. The temperature, texture the presentation from the first to last bite. It was nothing but a pure perfection including the wine pairing. I felt as if I was transported to Michelin Star French dinner with authentic vibes and pure excellence. I would definitely say La Mer is the best or one of the best restaurants I have dined in Hawaii or even to some world class degree. As there are no Michelin star restaurants in Hawaii, came across this restaurant reading about highly rated upscale dining experiences. Booked a reservation using Opentable to celebrate special occasion. La Mer is located within the beautiful Halekulani hotel on second floor. Upon checking in, we were escorted to an oceanside window table. The view was just perfect as the sun was going down and the calm ocean waves! Food: Menu Dégustation 7-course tasting menu: Duck liver, roasted scallop, poached lobster, filet of beef with foie gras, cheese cart. Poached lobster was a bit overcooked. Filet of beef with foie gras was cooked perfectly and tasted amazing. Cheese cart had some really tasty cheeses where you could select 3-4 to share. Overall the meal was decent, presentation was great, but a bit overpriced when compared to other tasting menus I have dined previously. Drinks: Poire Victoire and Ultimate Blossom were highly recommended cocktails and were perfectly balanced between not too sweet and not strong alcohol taste. Being one of two of the state of Hawaii's only Forbes Five Star restaurants, I had to make a special trip to try this restaurant. La Mer has an excellent reputation among the islands as an experience worth dressing up for and that's saying a lot for the casual place that Hawai is. It's located in the Halekulani Hotel and is on the second floor with the best view of ocean. I was staying in the hotel so they made a same day reservation for me. I didn't opt in for a cocktail or the supplement wine pairing because I had a lot of food to get through. The service was seamless and adapted to my pace. I love the use of Hawaiian ingredients with French recipes. The dishes were tastefully plated and I found everything to be delicious. If you're looking for a luxurious experience with a Hawaiian twist,La Mer has all that to offer and more. Upon entering the restaurant, we were greeted cheerfully by the host and all the other staff as we walked through. It truly was a warm welcome. This set the tone for the night as all the servers who came by our table were nothing short of phenomenal. Each staff member was incredible courteous, professional and a hand in making our evening wonderful. In particular, Lance, who took a bunch of photos for us made the evening especially memorable as his photography skills made for some great memorabilia of our dining experience and the weather. Now for the food, I will say this lies more on the conservative side of haute cuisine. However, the dishes were extremely well portioned and put together with extreme care. Not even a splash of sauce could be found in the wrong spot! With that said the real winners were the flavors. My wife is an especially picky eater but that night she couldn't stop raving about each dish. For us both, the standouts were the cuttlefish, foie torchon and filet. I'll spare the details, but one thing we agreed on was the resounding quality in each dish was balance. There were no flavors too overpowering or muted. In today's stage of cooking it seems to be a lost art, but one that the chefs here know and execute well. We ordered the wine pairing and that was also very pleasant, but nothing spectacular. Lots of common wines that are reasonably priced, the one standout was the Bigaro which we had first and the first time I tried such a wine. Another first was the iced coffee at the end. Even after such a hearty meal we still found the coffee to be amazing. Given the warm weather it was especially nice that they made iced coffee for us, a first time I've had that at the end of a meal. La mer has left such an amazing experience I look forward to the next time we venture to Waikiki for another meal here. A tradition we have is to have Christmas Eve dinner at a fine dining establishment. This year with our son and his wife we ate at La Mer. Haven't been here in many a moon, 27 years for dad, about 30 for our son and myself and a first time for our daughter in law. We arrived a little early and took the opportunity to take a few pictures, the hostess seeing us was nice enough to volunteer to take a few of them. Diners are greeted by the manager on duty, Steven. And there was a team of waiters which in our case was led by Mark. They were all very professional but not in a stuffy, formal way. Drinks for women often come with a rose. Dinner starts with an amuse de bouche. We had various things for dinner, one chose the menu of the day, another fish and lamb, fish and lobster and I had the lobster and fillet. All well prepared and presented. The large plates was like a canvas for food instead of a painting. And we all shared a soufflé that came with three different sauces. And even though we ended the meal with small sweets, we each given a small box if more sweets to take home. read more

The last time my wife and has dinner there was over 20 years ago when they stii maintain a 1 Michelin Star rating. We had the chef's 9 course dinner. It was spectacular! The chef was so happy we ordered it he personally came out to check up on us and experess his thanks after dinner. Bradah was totally French, he ciuld barely speak English - so he had to have his Sous chef come out to interpet. It was quite the experience (back in the day). Lovely restaurant. I was enjoying the other Yelpers photos, and if I could do something different, I would come earlier so I can watch the sunset and see the view of the ocean. Our reservations were for 8 pm, a late dinner, but the only time we could get accommodated. The service was bar none. Of course, I would not expect any less from one of Hawaii's most prestigious restaurants. We were elegantly dressed as per dress code, and as you walked into this sophisticated restaurant, you can see that they enforce the dress code because no one was underdressed in jeans, shorts, or beach clothing. There were 6 of us that enjoyed the Chef's 7 Course. Yes, seven. I was impressed how each meal was plated, but the best part is how the waitstaff served us individually. That was an art in itself! The issue I had was the wait time between the meals. I felt that it took a very long time from one meal to the next. I ended up taking short naps in between. My favorite? The cavier! The views were absolutely lovely. Presentation of the food was beautiful. The lobster was good and the steak was delicious. Alvin and Donato were delightful the entire evening. Steven was above and beyond accommodating - he shuffled our table so our third guest could have a view. As for our main server he left little to be desired. We have fine dined all over the world and never had a server that just seemed displeased with us the entire evening. Perhaps when we came in he thought we may not tip. We still gave 20%, but normally we overtip. He was very incorrect about us. Or it was the gay factor. Who knows. Would not go back. Worth every single penny!!! The main menu tasting dining experience lasted roughly 3.5-4 hours for my group of 3. We made reservations for this hotel restaurant about 1-1.5 months in advanced. If you don't want to do the entire tasting menu, you can optionally order individual courses a la carte. Please note, La Mer does have a dress code. It's not crazy strict, they ask that you to wear appropriate clothing (no flip flops/tank tops/ripped clothing) to match the atmosphere of the refined dining experience. La Mer's private open air dining room has a wonderful view of the ocean to enjoy while dining. Throughout our meal there was a live music performance next to our dining room. My favorite course in the entire set was the foie gras with pineapple chutney and coconut motifs. The foie gras was extremely decadent and salty, which went really well with the tangy pineapple chutney. Everything tasted amazing and the presentation for each course was so unique. The pacing of the meal was based on our readiness and I thought the service was immaculate. Our waiters were so kind and attentive throughout the whole experience. I'm obviously a huge fan of taking pictures of my food which the waiter took notice of and immediately asked if I would like to take videos of the sauce pouring. This thoughtfulness really added to my dining experience. I recommend pacing yourself or pick and choose which courses you want to go in on if you have a smaller stomach. I appreciated that I was able to box up some of my entrees I wasn't able to finish at the table. I've had a handful of fine dining experiences, including Michelin star restaurants, and La Mer is honestly one of my best experiences. I was taking a much needed vacation from Los Angeles. This was one of the best experience I have had! I went all out and got the prefix chef menu. The food was dancing on my palate with each bite with each course. The safe had every detail to the tee starting with having a sleeve for my face mask, the stool for my purse and lastly the parting gift that just made you feel even more special. I came here at the last minute, no reservation, and the staff was so wonderful in accommodating me. Stephen, the manager, was so quick to seat me as close to the ocean view as possible. [Stephen, you were so very amazing and I appreciate all you did to help make my experience worth every second]. I ended up being moved even closer to the ocean view and it was breathtaking. The bartender [I'm so sorry I didn't catch your name]; she was so sweet and made me an Old Fashioned while I waited to be seated [which was less than 3 minutes]. I was then greeted by Mark and Randall, the sweetest servers on Earth! Apparently, Randall is a level 1 Sommolier, and was very knowledgeable about his wines. They made my experience very memorable, warming, and welcoming. Thank you both, so very much. My favorite part of this evening though, was obviously the food. :) I did the tastings. Where do I even start? Hats off to Chef Alexandre, who came out at the end of dinner, which was such an honor.
