At Margotto, they made it rain--rain shaved truffles. While they have other menu items, they are known for their seasonal truffle menus and having well priced truffles which they source themselves from Italy. Under Chef Shiori Okuya, their tasting menu, was a nice way to experience the French-Japanese flavors of the restaurant. First we chose the amount of truffle we wanted for our meal. Then those truffles were shaved over multiple elegant appetizers; a Pot-au-Feu soup; a lobster fish course; oyster pasta; duck for our main; in Asian-style, a comforting rice bowl to end the savory courses; and finally even the dessert. Henry was an amazing server with flair and passion for the menu and we even took a little bit of truffle home to enjoy on soft scrambled eggs the next day. We started with the fish carpaccio, which had fresh greens drizzled with a delightful dressing. This was delicate yet tasty, great with the perfectly sliced prosciutto. Next, we each had the Caviar Monaka. 10 grams of roe presented on a fresh rice cracker. This paired well with our bubbly :) To continue with hors d'oeuvre, we enjoyed the Margotto special egg toast and added truffles of course. Silky egg yolk, over crunchy toast, and finished with flavorful truffle....delish! Everything was absolutely perfect so far. Then we were served the cacio e pepe. Margotto is located in a very unassuming area and though we parked within a few steps from the entrance, my boyfriend and I kept passing the restaurant. There are no signage so use the pictures of the outside of the restaurant as a reference. The food was delicious and most of the dishes were fresh and rich in flavor. My favorite was the Cacio e Pepe and it paired well with the aromatic truffle shavings. The ribeye was succulent and perfectly seasoned but still highlighted the natural flavors of the beef. The Margotto special egg toast was a bit lackluster. I felt as if there were no truffle shavings, this dish would be even more bland. Service felt really pushy and even though we ordered enough items to which we felt would be the perfect amount of food, the server stated we should order another entree. I felt obligated to order another dish but regretted it since I already felt full before the main dishes arrived. Looking back, an appetizer, 2 pasta dishes and 2 entrees would be overkill for any couple. It's buttery, beefy, savory and cheesy! Their fries are just okay but that's just a personal preference but it does come with a truffle dipping sauce and seasoning on the side. Being a truffle lover, it was a no brainer that I had to try Margotto! This restaurant is conveniently located on Piikoi Street (look for the black wood storefront). We also ordered some of the bread rolls which were perfectly fluffy and came piping hot. For our main meal, we decided to get a bunch of items and share: Cacio e Pepe with truffle, Carbonara with truffle, Cotoletta Milanese, Joue De Boeuf, TKG Truffle Rice, and the homemade vanilla ice cream with white truffle honey. The table favorites were the Cacio e Pepe with truffle (so much we ordered 2 more) and the Joue De Boeuf. The Cacio e Pepe was a recommendation from our waiter, which we were sold on when he stated that they "use an offensive amount of French butter" lol. Amazing in every aspect! Definitely a great place to bring a foodie for special occasions. Food is expertly prepared using the best quality ingredients and presentation is on point. I'd recommend getting a cold + hot appetizer + pasta + main and save room for dessert! We tried the cold cauliflower potage which was like a whipped creamy cauliflower soup purée and got uni on the side bc hubs does not eat that. 10/10! The TK egg on toast with sauce is so simple yet it has a definite wow factor so I'd recommend ordering it if you haven't tried it. We tried 2 pastas bc we couldn't decide which one to get and it was a lot of food but worth it. The burrata melted on top of tomato sauce was perfection. The carbonara was creamy and dreamy with thick smoky chunks of pancetta. YUM! For mains we ordered the wagyu and it was small but oh so flavorful! The lamb chops were also delicious just a tad undercooked IMO. Both were served with local veggies that were perfectly cooked. You can order truffles and I recommend adding this touch of decadence! Especially in the winter, the white truffles were way better than the black ones. They weigh it out in front of you then shave or grate it onto the food. We were going to order a bottle of wine but instead opted to do custom wine pairings for the dishes we ordered and that was the right choice bc we got to try a variety of flavors and the same wine wouldn't have been such a diverse gastronomic journey. Their sommelier definitely knows his stuff! The service is the best out of anywhere else I've been on island/ the world for that matter! We did the 8pm seating on a Friday night and had the intimate front dining room so it was cozy and romantic. We had 3 servers (I'm so bad with names but they know who they are!). Yes I seriously wanted the experience and I did!! I always say I work because I like nice things...and this is not one of them...it's so far beyond bougie and we certainly toasted to that tonight! Me and my bestie got to experience something we couldn't stop smiling over the minute we walked in the door. Instantly we were greeted and escorted to our table set perfectly with the napkin folded into a suit with the bowtie pasta artfully painted in vibrant colors our setting along with the menu for the evening. The vibe here is delightfully casual and don't forget to check in on the Yelp app as there is an offer for a free Champagne toast our server Eriko was just phenomenal went through our menu with us and immediately brought out a box filled with the truffles for the evening describe it's origin and type to us and even let us pick it up to observe which we both have never done before. With that the two types of truffles we brought out to us under the cutest dome for us to stare throughout the evening as we see it whittle down to nothing. I suppose their dining in must be much better but their portions were so small for the price ($30 or so for one pasta) and their slightly flat pasta was too soft (delivery was within 8 minutes yet). The street address is on Pi'ikoi but it was difficult to find as there is a very small sign maybe 8 1/2 inches by 11 inches. It was not visible if you are driving and looking for the place. I was totally lost. I went around and around the block several times until I finally pull my car on the side and had to call the restaurant and ask for help. They have about 5-6 parking stalls on Kopaka St which is a one way going east. The stalls are first come first serve but are complimentary if you're lucky to get one. $$$$ Interesting French truffle dining experience. We were a group of 4 and we shared each dish. Food was flavorful but portions are small and not made to be sharable. The server was nice This place is a French Truffle infused experience. There are several different types of truffles with different prices ranges per gram. We only tried it on the first dish we ordered but did not ask for any extra truffle on anything else. We began with a smoked salmon salad with added truffle. The small salad was $25 and with the added truffle it became $37. We decided not to have extra truffle on anything else. We tried the prosciutto di parma which is charged per slice or ounce. Something like that. Next was foie gras cheese risotto which was our favorite. We ordered 2 pastas. Cacio e pepe was excellent and carbonara was the other. For protein we had cotoletta milanese with mugifuji pork. It reminded me of tonkatsu with a lite sauce. For dessert we had a spoonful each of homemade vanilla ice cream with white truffle honey which was super delicious. I came back to Margotto and the experience has greatly improved. I really think I much prefer the spring menu vs. the winter menu. I had a great time the first time, but the second time is even better! I really enjoyed the seasonal menu, because it felt like coming to a good friend's home and eating something new and tasty. I'm not a fan of truffles, so I did not get them either time while dining at Margotto. Truffles are their calling card, but they have such a great menu beyond all of that. My absolute favorite thing that I order from there is the baked potatoes (they're cute little fingerling potatoes bubbling in hot butter and herbs) and I top each potato with a smear of caviar. Heavenly. This is what I flew all the way from California for. :-) I know it sounds crazy, but a caviar baked potato is the definition of comfort luxury food. Margotto Hawai'i is on Piikoi hidden in an all black exterior near Ichiriki. They have a few stalls along the back wall of the restaurant but otherwise you will need to find street parking. Knowing the parking situation in the area, we took an Uber. Don't let the all black exterior fool you. When you walk in, the restaurant is modern, bright and full of art. There are several private rooms, a main dining area and a counter dining area that's right when you enter. The restrooms are in the back on the right. Reservations are recommended and they hold a credit card for deposit on the reservation. Their menu is set at $100 without truffles, upgrades, add ons or drinks. For our meal, we had options to add caviar and upgrade our protein. The menu we had for the night was Squid, Avocado, Snow Crab, Mushroom, Waimanalo TKG Egg, Monchong, Pasta, Beef (Rib Eye), Tsuyahime, Truffle Honey and Ala Moana Truffle. I upgraded the Beef (Rib Eye) to their A5 Wagyu Beef. We took the recommendation of our server for the Italian Winter White Truffle and Perigold Whinter Black Truffle/Burgundy Autumn Black Truffle. Everything went well with the bottle of champagne we ordered. The champagne didn't last very long with me lol. The customer service was exceptional and even the owner came by to talk to our table. Our dinner did take longer than normal and we closed down the place. The meal included an automatic 20% gratuity where 1/2 goes to the owner and 1/2 is shared between the staff. Food wise, you can't go wrong with truffles and A5 Wagyu Beef. I enjoyed most of the offerings in the set menu except the fried Monchong and the sweet items. They said the only way I would not get charged is if I come back. WHY WOULD I WANT TO DINE HERE AND RESCHEDULE!? After being treated like this? AFTER EXPLAINING THE SITUATION AND BEING TOLD THE ONLY WAY TO AVOID GETTING CHARGED $400 IS TO PICK ANOTHER DAY TO DINE HERE! So okay fine, to entertain this greedy ass owner we reschedule for the following week. The 22nd. By the 19th it was clear I was still immobile. So we call THREE TIMES TO TRY AND CANCEL BECAUSE GOD FORBID I MISS THE 48 hr window again due to the fact that IM CURRENTLY HANDICAPPED AND THEN GET CHARGED $400! They don't get back to me NOTHING. Now it's the 21st and despite proof for 3 attempts to cancel on the 19th, well within the 48 hour window, nope. They still insist we dine there and will not allow cancellation lololol. I'm fine and alive btw thanks for asking but okay sure we will come back so u can make $ off of us since that's clearly the concern here"Tell me if this is the most insincere apology you've heard "sorry you got into a terrible accident but honestly it's not our responsibility". This place I felt was all about the experience. Don't get me wrong that it wasn't just that. Everything about this place is amazing whether it's be the friendly staff, the great tasting wine, and the different seasons of truffle. This place will have your mouth exploding with flavors you've never had before. The sommelier was very knowledgeable and to me felt like he made our experience here that much of a special one. Atmosphere not to mention was very calm and welcoming. All in all it's a place that can't be described by words but more of a feeling you get once you experience it. My fellow world food traveler joined me as I celebrated my 70th birthday at Margotto Hawaii, across the street from Ala Moana Center at the corner of Piikoi and Hopaka. We parked at AMC because I couldn't find street parking. It's in an unassuming dark colored building with very tiny signage and a door with an almost too subtle for me handle. Enter into a cozy, windowless space with an open kitchen on one side. The center of the room is dominated by a prosciutto slicer. We had a table at the end of a bank of tables against the wall opposite the kitchen. The first thing you notice are the artfully folded napkins that look like the front of a shawl collared dinner jacket with a gold bowtie pasta where a tie would be located. The menu is simple (sort of) ... It's a 10-course tasting menu and it lists the ingredients to be used but not their preparation along with optional items like prosciutto, A5 Wagyu, lamb and caviar. Your main decision is how much truffles you want and which type. You are required to purchase at least 5 grams of white truffles at $12/gram and the chef recommends 15 grams per guest. (IMO, that's too much of a good thing.) The chef also recommends 5 - 10 grams of black truffles. We opted for 10 grams of both types to be shared between us. We started with a bottle of 2018 Corton Grand Cru red Burgundy from Domaine Pierre Giullemont. I thought it was reasonably priced at $225 as it's about $150 in a store and it was served in beautiful crystal shaped for a red burgundy. Our pieces of truffle were displayed upon our table, along with a wooden truffle slicer. The first course was a cold chawanmushi with pieces of abalone and Matsutake mushroom and shavings of white truffle. The aroma of white truffle is intoxicating! I am not a fan of chawanmushi and this was my first experience with one served cold but I found it refreshing and truffles and custard always pair well. Two bite-sized canapes accompanied the chawanmushi; one was ahi, the other featured cheese. These were miniature pieces of art for the eyes. The next course featured mushrooms ... Imagine a blini piled with duxelles mixture topped with a small mountain of white truffle. This was created on our table and served on a slice of a tree trunk. Wow, the intense perfume of the truffles and mushrooms made me think of miniature slices of beef Wellington. This was fantastic! A fish course followed; on the menu it was listed as Hapu'upu'u, which I looked up; it's Sea Bass. You get a petite piece of sea bass atop some type of green vegetable, a fan of radish, dill, micro-greens and some type of sauce. This dish was beautiful but it wasn't really special. Next up, a pancake with a Waimanalo TKG egg atop and generous shavings of white truffle. This was a lusciously rich dish ... I used pieces of the pancake to sop up all of the egg yolk. The highlight of the evening was a bowl of spaghetti in olive oil, smothered with shaved truffles. So simple, yet this dish was simply sublime. This single dish made the evening for us. The meat course was next; my tablemate had the ribeye while I opted for the lamb. Each was served with pieces of mushroom, charred Brussels sprouts, cottage potatoes and what we think were heirloom carrots. A generous portion of black truffle made for another decadent dish. The lamb was good but probably not worth the $30 upgrade. Next up: Akitakomachi, a special Japanese rice. It was served two ways, with a raw egg or with furikake. We chose one of each to see how they were presented. Can anything beat a raw egg over hot rice? Yes, add sliced truffles! A simple, yet luxurious dish. Two dessert courses followed ... First, a deconstructed tiramisu made with a round of mascarpone cheese and a quenelle of ice cream, topped by a white chocolate round and drizzles of lilikoi sauce. The only thing I missed was the flavor of coffee. Finally, a box of chocolate rocks with two black truffles containing some type of white cream (or marshmallow?) finished the meal. The rocks were edible and I liked them more than the truffle. Service was attentive and the pacing of the dishes improved after I mentioned we would like them to come out more slowly. We wanted time to savor the artful presentations and to take in the perfume of the truffles. I would characterize Margotto Hawaii as a truffle restaurant ... Truffles are the star and the other ingredients play a supporting role. If you love truffles, you will love Margotto. I do love truffles but I think I would put them on less dishes; six of the courses used truffles ... I would reduce that to four, perhaps five. The price for the food is very reasonable ($100); the cost for truffles varies but you can easily spend more on truffles than on the food and your bill for two could easy reach four figures if you order a decent bottle of wine. PARKING They have about 5 stalls on the small side street to the mauka side of the restaurant. If you take the first reservation available all the stalls should be open. Otherwise theres a paid parking lot to the ewa side, as well as metered stalls along piikoi SPACE super unassuming iykyk kinda place Restaurant is completely black from the outside and the sign on the piikoi side is hella tiny STAFF omg the staff was so amazing! Everyone was super super friendly and helpful. Talked to us a lot. Joked around. Made it a really fun time and amazing experience. Would totally recommend going here just for that. They were so down to earth and not at all pretentious even though its a more upscale restaurant. FOOD Step 1: choose how much truffle you want. We opted for 10g per person. They said we could always add more later if we wanted. And though the protein dishes say to add truffle, they dont really need it. This week they had black winter tazmania truffles. About $3 something per gram. i wasnt expecting much since a lot of the yelp reviews were not the best. BUT i was impressed. Everything tasted so good. Yes they are all small bites. But there were a lot of dishes, and i left full. I loved the creativity of the pieces and how delicately these were prepared since they were complex but small. Staff explains each dish to you since the menu tells you nothing. I really liked this place and the atmosphere. Would totally recommend this even if you didnt want to eat any truffles. read more

First found out about Margotto when I saw a post on IG about a new restaurant in Oahu featuring seasonal truffles. Couldn't have timed it more perfectly as a group of friends and I would be on the island for a dive trip. Making reservations was easy but had to call them to adjust as another friend decided to join us which made it a party of 7. Am super thankful Margotto was able to accommodate. Finding parking was a bit tricky as the lot behind the restaurant is shared with several businesses and completely full when we arrived. We luckily found a spot on what I believed to be an alleyway/street nearby. Don't recall seeing any signs out front but the restaurant is located to the right of Ichiriki. As we walked through the door, we were escorted to a private room behind the main dining room which was nice as we had a fairly large party. We opted to start the meal with a blanc de blanc champagne which had a reasonable price tag. Our server explained the tasting menu which has just 3 options, whether you wanted to add the caviar or beef course, how many grams of truffle and whether you wanted to add their wine pairing. As a few friends opted to add the premium wine pairing, I quickly followed along. Next a box containing the winter black truffles was placed in the center of the table which smelled amazing. The only course I didn't partake in was of the caviar, which all of my friends enjoyed (I did snap a pic). Loved the creativity by Chef Kayama as I thought each course enhanced the natural flavor of the winter truffle. The only course I wasn't a fan of was the final dessert, the Ala Moana truffle (which I believe was a truffle cream puff). The wine pairing was fantastic and the sommelier was very generous with his pours. Needless to say, we left the restaurant with full bellies and with a nice little buzz from all of the wine. Was nice to meet the owner who explained his vision of the restaurant. Will be back in November to hopefully have another great meal featuring winter white truffles. read more
