I'm sure you've all driven past this place a million times. Next time you do, STOP AND EAT HERE! It's some of the best food I've had and makes me want to go to Peru. Right now. The service wasn't fantastic. We went without water for half the meal but I like to give them the benefit of the doubt that someone didn't show up to work or something. We'll see if it happens again. I had the #15, jalea de pescado, and I was blown away! Enough to write this review with only 7%battery left. First off, the menu warns you to be patient because they prepare your food fresh. I'm telling you it was worth the wait. It took a while to get chips and salsa, but they were delicious. Yes, they charge extra for additional salsa, but it's worth the eighty cents. Splurge a little. My dinner included lightly breaded fried fish, served on a bed of lettuce, garnished with shrimp and calamari, served with slices of fried potato and topped with a light lime salad and yucca. It easily could've fed two people and the presentation was outstanding. It had kind of a lot of onions for me, but even they were good. You'll have to appreciate lime to enjoy the dish, but I do, and I was astounded from the very first bite. I don't particularly love shrimp, but this was super fresh and I ate every single one! Disclaimer: I eat out five nights a week and it takes a lot to get me excited about a meal. Worse experience with Silvia & Megan. I was trying to place an order on the phone per usual (I'm a regular customer). I asked Megan if she was gonna take my name & phone number for the order & she said no (usually they do). I told her I still wanted to give it to her so I can pick up my order with a name...she then pretended like she couldn't hear me & handed the phone to Silvia who wanted to verify my order. While talking to her she would start talking to other customers, but wouldn't even ask to place me on hold or wait while she was trying to multitask (clearly they were annoyed with me just because I wanted them to have info of the person placing an order). So I waited, but then she ended up just hanging up. I called back & asked why they hung up on me. She said she couldn't hear me anymore & I told her she didn't even bother to say "hello" to see if I was there. Overall, it was a very frustrating experience. I just wanted to place a simple order & enjoy our food, but instead I'm having to write this bad review. It's too bad because we loved their food & even though it's very expensive, we still ordered quite a bit from them. We would even tip them even though would normally pick up our food. I have been dining at La Carreta for 47 years. They serve the best Peruvian cuisine I have ever eaten outside of Peru. I have tried many. And they are the nicest people you will ever meet. The lady seated me and seemed upset that I did not want to sit with everyone else. Food came out. Steak was a little bit salty. Regular fare with the fries and salad and rice. I was sitting there finishing up my soda when I got asked to leave at 4:09. She said that they close for lunch at three. Why did they let me in the restaurant to begin with!? I was not impressed. The building is pretty and the decore was nice but the vast majority of the food was bland and disgusting. The only good food was the chips and salsa, kabobs and the steak.The wait for anything was long, our waiter was forgetful and cold, and we never got a refill. The beans were a tasteless mush and semi cold by the time I was able to remind our waiter that we had ordered beans. I left just slightly less hungry than when I had arrived. I've come to this place many times. The few last times I've comed, service was ok, but today, it sucked! My waiter didn't say hi or anything. She sat us down in a corner and basically forgot us. Every time I would ask for something, she would bring it just whenever, while the other tables next to us would get catered and well taking cared of. She clearly hates her job. They had basically no appetizers and food didn't taste good. My plate was served as If it was being served by a teenager. Just enjoyed eating dinner here yesterday evening and I must say, it was a pleasant experience! The food was really good! I'm afraid my Spanish is far from good so I can't remember exactly what I ordered, but it was basically fried fish with rice and fresh salad. Delicious. I had a bite of what my brother in law had as well and it was really good (it was some fried rice with egg dish)! The decor is very warm and welcoming and it was very clean. The one problem I had was the server we had seemed a touch indifferent. Not rude or unhelpful, just aloof. My experience here was a huge disappointment honestly. Being my first visit today and from how much people rave to me about this resto., I had high expectations. The decors were beautiful. Service was alright,in the sense that the servers were at least friendly and respectful. I came alone and there was only a party of 5 that came before me. I ordered the arroz con mariscos (#14). The wait for the food was a good 20 - 25 minutes which wasn't terrible. However, the second my food arrived, without even tasting it, I was already disappointed. There was no sight of any squid.... and the dish appeared to be just fried rice with lightly battered and deepfried pieces of fish and lightly battered and deepfried shrimps. Now what I love about this particular Peruvian dish when done right is that it's a bit on the moist and soft side, always colorful, juicy and packs a heavenly burst of flavors in every bite. Their arroz con mariscos was lacking in both flavors and colors, and was just dry and a bit oily. The proportion was very stingy for the $15 price tag. But the biggest deal breaker for me was, although the dish itself was seriously lacking in flavors, the fish bits and shrimps were very very salty. I drank the entire glass of water just to get through half of the food. My glass just sat empty for the next 10+ minutes. Not until I finish my food and continue to sit for another 5 minutes that the lady came out and asked if I needed anything else. I asked for more water, and it would make sense if she also brought out my check. Instead, she just stood at the counter for another 5+ minutes before bringing me the bills. I don't think I would give this place a second chance. Paying $19 (tips included) for lunch doesn't really make sense when you gotta wait a half hour for the food and it's not even good. And those people that rave about this resto, I am starting to think it's only because they're from Provo and are just happy to find something new that tastes better than the surrounding fast-food chains. Next time I'll just drive to Del Mar al Lago in SLC for my Peruvian food fix. Costs about the same but generous proportions and oh sooo tasty. read more

I came to La Carreta for the first time the day I arrived in Orem. I didn't have a car yet so I had to walk 3 miles to an interview I had at a big box store across the street from the restaurant. When I got out of the interview I was hungry and it was raining. I saw on google maps that there was a Peruvian restaurant nearby. I served my mission in Córdoba, Argentina, a culturally diverse city with many Peruvian families. There I was able to experience how delicious Peruvian food is. I had been dying to experience that flavor again since I had returned home from my mission. As I walked into La Carreta soaked in rain I was greeted kindly and directed to a table. Not only did I experience that flavor again, I felt at home. La Careta had authentic Peruvian food and authentic Peruvian hospitality. I would recommend to anyone! read more

This is one of the best restaurants in Orem. I am a non-mormon transplant and would enjoy a pisco sour with my dinner, but alas they do not serve alcohol. Their lomo saltado is heaven. They make their own fresh french fries, the meat is sizzling, and they mix in some fresh vegetables. They also serve, frankly, the best cevice I have had short of the similar poki (which I have only had in Hawaii with freshly caught fish). Really, go to this place. My wife and I always get the #2 and the #14. The food is PHENOMENAL!!!! The wait staff leaves a lot to be desired, though. On our most recent visit, the restaurant was almost empty. I waited 20 minutes for the waiter to come out after my glass was empty, and he had to be reminded twice to bring us limes. We were never asked how our food was or invited to come back. Also, the prices are a little bit high, especially considering that the sides consist of french fries and "salad" which is just a small pile of chopped iceberg lettuce. This place is a hidden gem. Food is prepared FRESH every time. If you have an issue with it, they fix it or replace it immediately. The atmosphere is rustic and they are very kid friendly. I love this place and their ceviche and jaleo de pescado is the best plate of food I have found in the entire state. Salsa is freshly made and every batch is different because it's fresh. Everything about this place is amazing. The second location was not as good as the first but it had a different cook and that location is a graveyard for restaurants (Fazoli's, Wendy's, an Italian place, and two Mexican restaurants). I'm so glad this one is still open. I have yet to find another Peruvian restaurant that even compares to this place in Utah, Louisiana, Colorado, Chicago, Texas and everywhere else i have been. I doubt you'd find better food in Peru itself! My friends who have lived in Peru agree. If they keep up the good work, I will keep coming back and sending all of my friends and family to this restaurant as I have been for four years now. Amazing. read more
