This is the third time we've been here and the first time I've left a review. We were excited to visit again because we don't often make it to the Orem area. When we arrived and sat down, we were greeted by Joe telling us that "House rules, you're not allowed to order the same item". Lol. Love that guy! We both ordered Denver omelets, one without onions,extra mushrooms, French toast, and grits and one without mushrooms, hash browns, and pancakes. First off, the pancakes were amazing! They're light, had crispy edges, and had a wonderful flavor. But the best thing was it was in the shape of little donuts, which was a nice surprise. Our entrees came but were somehow got switched. We didn't realize it at first but both were still good. Unfortunately, my wife put Chalula on hers and I put Tobasco on mine and we don't like each other's choice of condiments. The other unfortunate thing was that I had an eggshell in my omelet. Even though we had these misfortunes you can't hide the flavor of these dishes and they certainly don't skimp on toppings. My grits were too sweet today. If it's too sweet for me, it must've been really sweet. The only other criticism I saw was that they were filling the syrup bottles from large Log Cabin jugs. They also were using Idahoan shredded potatoes from a large carton. I can understand the potatoes but how great would it be to have freshly made syrup. Took my family to Joe's and it was so worth it! As we were walking down the sidewalk looking for the entrance - Joe, himself, called out to us to come on over because he was waiting to hold the door. This warm, friendly welcome set the tone for the whole experience. Joe stopped by and told us the "rules". Everyone orders something different and we all share. My daughters both ordered waffles but one got it in a combo so she could follow the rules. I got the breakfast burrito with Texas sausage & bacon. My husband got the eggs & diced ham with a side of biscuits and gravy. My son got the French Dip because you can order breakfast or lunch at 10 am. We wanted to try something different for lunch. I found Joes Cafe on Yelp. It did not disappoint. Everything we had easy really yummy. The bacon and sausage were highlights. Kids loved the pancakes. Joe is a national treasure that should be protected at all costs. He let my kids pick out a handmade wooden toy car. He calls them his niece and nephew and had some juice and grits brought to our table to try. This was our first time having grits so I have nothing to compare it to, but it was really good. After reading raving reviews of this place i went for breakfast. What a disappointment. The staff was very distracted and not very attentive. I ordered ham and eggs, over easy. The eggs were over medium almost over well. Yucky. The hash browns were good and a biscuit costs $1 more. I asked for a side of gravy and was told that it was $6. Ridiculous!! . All I wanted was a side not an entire order. I was not gonna pay $6 for a serving of gravy. I asked for coffee and was served the WORST coffee EVER. THE WAITRESS brought 2 more different cups of coffee which were the same in terrible taste and tasted as if it was sitting for hours. I finally settled for a glass of water. Joe's Café didn't have air conditioning going when we ate lunch there. It was incredibly hot. It made it a very uncomfortable dining experience. They messed up on a few of our orders. They bring out the food as it's made and one person in our group was forgotten. I got the French toast with eggs and bacon, and the food was very average. We were looking for the best breakfast restaurants in Orem, and Joe's Cafe was the first to pop up on google. When you walk in the restaurant feels college themed, with tons of pictures just everywhere on the walls. I mean, there isn't really a blank space left. I ordered the short stack pancakes, and my Mimi ordered a half Belgian waffle. We both got hash browns (Yes they have actual hash browns not home fries) and scrambled eggs. Service is quick, it took about 10 minutes for our food to be on our table. But, instead of receiving a short stack, they gave me silver dollar pancakes. But this is ok, I didn't mind. The pancakes are light and buttery, and practically melt in your mouth. My Mimi really liked her waffle, too. The hash browns aren't too soft, and aren't too crunchy. They're cooked just right. The scrambled eggs are soft, but could be a little more runny. Anyways, our breakfast was pretty good, but can have some improvements. First time to Joes Cafe and it was fantastic. When we walked up Joe greeted us as if we'd been friends for years. Joe then asked us what we were in the mood for, told us what was good (which I'm convinced was everything looking at the tables next to us) and he had our order before we even sat down. I ordered the biscuits and gravy with grits and my wife got the breakfast sandwich with avocado. I'm a big biscuits and gravy fan but also critic. I need a good biscuit, tasty gravy that is meaty. This was it! Throw in two over easy eggs on top and it all just worked! The grits also really good and sweet. My wife also really enjoyed the breakfast sandwich w/avocado and by the looks of it would have been something I would order in the future if the biscuits and gravy wasn't so darn good. Joe's is a small place with outdoor seating but it was still a little chilly when we arrived. The menu is standard diner items and it was very tasty. I had a great omelet and my husband loved the sausage gravy. The cook came past after we had nearly finished the massive potions of food and asked if we had tried the grits. This place is kind of hard to spot at 1st but the locals definitely know it's there by the way it's always busy in there! Do not be alarmed when you go in and it's packed-- no free tables -- they will take your phone number and they will call you in just a few mins to get you seated!I believe the longest wait we had was only about 20 mins -- and that was probably because we had a party of 4 instead of just my wife and I. Do yourself a favor and order the pancakes. You get a plate of mini ones -- not the traditional size. Kids love it. My wife likes their omelettes and hash browns best. This is the type of small town American diner you love to see. It's small and busy, but they move people quickly through on a Saturday afternoon. The walls are covered floor to ceiling with photos of the customers with the owner. And sure enough, my first time in, the owner comes over and chats us up for a minute, super friendly and fun. So the service and vibes are as good as it gets. I got a breakfast burrito and grits (kinda funny combo). The breakfast burrito was solid, but the grits were worth going back for. Sweeter than I'm used to, but it's Utah, I'm okay with that. And oh so creamy. I'd love to come back here not only for the food but because we really need more places like this. read more

This morning started with me wanting to try a new place for breakfast. I found this amazing little place - Joe's Cafe in Orem. Came with a big group, so I got to try a lot of things. My favorite breakfast item is an omelette, so I'll start with that. Omelette: 10/10 - good egg omelette with amazing amount of ingredients in it Belgian Waffle with Fruit: 9/10 - I think it's real whipped cream and it was fantastic Grits: 10/10 - I don't normally like grits, o could have eaten the whole bowl Hash browns: 8/10 - very good and complimentary to the omelette. If I could choose again, I'd get the grits with the omelette Potato Salad: 7/10 - it was a great potato salad and I would order it again. The Slap Your Mama version was a little salty for me. But the cafe was awesome. I'm a sucker for a good breakfast stop. It's not a posh location, but all the workers were so sweet and took great care of us. I really enjoyed sitting outside. Normally in cooking shows, the contestants will talk a lot about their passion coming through in their food. The judges talk about being able to taste a degree of love in the food. And I feel like, with very few exceptions, I don't know at all what they're talking about. Joe's is one of those exceptions. I can't put my finger on it and I don't know if or how the science works, but this is one of those very, very special places with noticeable heart and soul that go into your meal. We came here on a Saturday morning for brunch and we enjoyed ourselves. Joe even came up to our table and thanked us for eating at his store. We ordered two hot chocolates, a coffee, a breakfast plate with sausage, a waffle place with sausage, and a breakfast sandwich. We thought the hot chocolate was too sweet but it was rich and very chocolaty. The waffle was super buttery (almost too buttery) and so it was not necessary to add extra butter on top. My partner told me the sausages could have been better because it seemed like pre-made. The breakfast sandwich was huge and it could have been split between two meals/people. It was difficult because I didn't know what came on it. I asked if it was eggs, cheese and bacon, and the waiter said yes. But then when I got the sandwich, there was also sausage in it. And I wouldn't have gotten it or would have asked for no sausage if I knew that. So they could be more clear about that. The service was super quick. We sat down, ordered, and within 5 minutes we received our food. 3-4 staff came to check in on us as we ate our food. They definitely have gotten the logistics of serving breakfast to many customers down pat. read more

Tiny breakfast/lunch whole in the wall type place that you know the locals all flock to because it seems to always be busy when we go! But they get the food out to you super quick and they turn over tables fast! I observed someone with a party of 6 and she told them that it should be about 10 mins and sure enough they managed to move a couple tables around and had them seated in no time. We have gone here multiple times thru the years. We like to look at the walls filled with pictures of the owner (Joe) and his customers thru the years. It's a family business so when you come you will probably see him, his wife or one of both of their daughters. His wife and daughters are so lovely. Joe is so funny! He tries to make it a point to come out to each table and say Hi, ask how we are liking our meal, etc. We always get the pancakes. The menu says short or large stack but it's a plate of mini pancakes drenched in butter with crisp edges! They are a favorite. Personally I love and always order the omelettes. Highly recommend this place-- especially if you love Breakfast! They also serve lunch items but in all the times I've been there-- I have never noticed anyone order lunch! I was a bit disappointed on my second visit. What makes this Cafe charming is Joe himself. He's right in the center of things getting people seated, taking orders, cooking, and turning tables. The service is spot on but the quality just wasn't there this time. My veggie omelette was on the small side and came with American cheese even though I asked for cheddar plus it was a bit oily. In addition, the hash browns didn't have any flavor.
