Okay, The Block might be my new favorite restaurant in Provo. Every single course delivered. We started with honey butter and rolls (dangerous in the best way), then moved to the ricotta and focaccia; perfectly balanced and honestly could've stopped there and been happy. But then came the steak, which was flat-out the best I've had in years. No notes. Here's the thing though, I'm not a gnocchi person. Never have been. Our server talked me into it anyway, and I'm genuinely grateful. It's a short rib and stew situation with gnocchi that somehow hits every note perfectly. Total convert now. And the s'mores pie to close out the night? Simply perfect. Don't skip it. The service was great too, our server clearly knew the menu inside and out and steered us exactly right. read more

It was first time trying Block and overall it was a neutral experience. I was with a bigger party and our table was well attended to. However, we did have one drink server where we had some issues with, but our main waitress was lovely. For starters, our table shared the baked ricotta, balsamic glazed brussel sprouts, and bread rolls with honey and butter. The brussel sprouts were good, but the bread rolls were my favorite! They were so incredibly soft and pillowy. They honestly didn't even need the bread and butter! I was most excited for the baked ricotta, but unfortunately it was a disappointment for me. Ricotta is a very mild cheese to begin with, but I tasted absolutely zero flavor from it and it was mostly just adding a textural element to the bread. The fig walnut guanciale jam was overpoweringly sweet and the guanciale was also nonexistent. Overall, what I expected to be a flavorful combination, fell pretty flat and bland for me. Onto the main, I got to try the Block burger and the house made gnocchi. The burger was a standard burger, nothing too crazy. I was surprised the patty was actually moist because it was cooked well done. The same jam from the baked ricotta was used, so wasn't a big fan of it because again the overwhelmingly sweet didn't do much to elevate the burger. I also missed any flavor from the truffle cheese sauce. So it was a pretty average burger. My gnocchi definitely tasted better than it looked. Another friend also got the same dish and it looked like they just split our portions in half and served it on two separate plates. In general, I wasn't a big fan of this dish. The braised short rib was very tender, but the whole plate sat in a pool of salty sauce. I couldn't really make out any other flavors. The scoop of crème fraiche tasted exactly like sour cream and was not the consistency that I expected. The gnocchi's were made well, but I prefer mine a little firmer. However, this is complete personal preference. Overall, service was good, but food fell severely short of what I expected. This is an update now that they have added the breakfast option. We came in on a Tuesday for breakfast and coffee. They are sorting out the issues, but it's obvious it will be an excellent option. They have fresh pastries and a solid breakfast menu. The service was excellent, and my "standard" breakfast of sausage, eggs, roasted tomato (ta mah toh), and potatoes were both huge and delicious. I bring up the phonetic sounding of the tomato because it very much brings to mind a breakfast place in England or Ireland. The latte and proper macchiato were excellent too. Best eggs Benedict ever! Quality food in a nice space. A little pricey but worth it on occasion.

It's been a bit since we last came here for brunch, and they've removed some items from their brunch menu. They used to have a burrito of the day and biscuits and gravy, which my husband loved and was excited to eat again, but he was disappointed to find they've taken it off the menu. I ordered their special of the day, which was bread pudding French toast, and it was pretty good!! My husband ended up ordering the huevos pericos. He liked it, but wasn't fully satisfied since he really wanted the biscuits and gravy. Our waiter Carlos was great! Came here with my friends for brunch and it did not disappoint! We ordered most of the menu haha. Honestly their coffee was really good. The place was big but had different rooms so felt pretty casual for groups. All of the meals we got were delicious, did not expect pulled salmon for the lox. Really wanted to like this place. We came here for our anniversary dinner. Hostess was great. She offered to take our picture. Server was super kind. We were feeling good about this place Food was ok. First, we ordered the grazing board. It was great! It was large and more than enough for us two. Could feed 4 easily. Next, our food took 45 minutes to arrive. Ordered the elote Caesar salad with chicken. Side of chicken was $18 for just the chicken. It was super dry too and we paid $32 for an ok salad. When asked if we could get other chicken that wasn't dry for that premium price, we were told it was all dry. They said they would give us the chicken at half off but still we were left dry chicken we had to pay for. Salmon lacked flavor. I could tell the quality was good but it lacked flavor. I left my review directly with the restaurant marketing campaign and got no response. We came to an almost empty restaurant on a Tuesday night. While my wife ordered a salad we found out that to add chicken was almost the same price as the salad we decided to go for it. The chicken came out way dry, we told our waiter and he talked with the chef. The chef said that he agrees and that all the chicken was dry and overcooked. We asked for a refund and they forgot to take it off the check. Our water glasses were empty most of the time and there was a weird vibe with the kitchen and staff having loud open conversations. Overall the bill for 2 people was almost $100 and it was a real let down. The one positive is the charcuterie board was great, but how do you mess up cut cheese and meat. read more

We've been coming here for years and have always loved it. Since the ownership change, it's felt disorganized. For example, today we were told the wait would be 10-15 minutes, but after 25 minutes, we were told they were short staffed and it would be at least another hour. There were certainly things I liked about Block when we visited yesterday, but overall, it seems a bit overpriced for what we received. This restaurant is fairly cozy bordering on cramped. My mother-in-law reserved dinner for a large group for my father-in-law's birthday, and our table was a bit crowded. I ordered the gnocchi. It was delicious, with lots of short rib--but, for some reason, very little gnocchi. I enjoyed the sourdough bread and the chocolate potted cream (which we had to order without the whipped cream as it has alcohol--recommend offering the option of regular whipped cream here in Utah). We also ordered the charcuterie, which looked delicious but which I was unable to try for medical reasons. At the rather expensive price point, the service could really use a boost. We went long periods of time without seeing our server, and she pushed my father-in-law into ordering a dessert since it was, supposedly, free. (It was not free; it came up on the bill.) Bold uses of textures and flavors. The problem is the chef is aiming to introduce too much adventure into the menu. For example, who would pair chorizo sausage potato salad with trout? It overwhelms the palette. The fish was gorgeous with an excellent crisp pickled carrot topping. But chorizo should be a small accent, if used at all. For another example, if you advertise your house made gnocchi with braised short ribs, then it should not be in a deep broth. The pasta was sitting at the bottom of a bowl of soup rather than taking a starring role. In another example the Braised lamb was camouflaged by shredding. The pork belly appetizer was the best item, thoughtfully prepared on a base of sweet potato puree. On the other hand, food tasted great, just odd pairings. If I could do 0 stars I would. The Block has been my family's favorite brunch spot for years. We went today for Father's Day to find that it has new ownership. We will not be going back. First of all we made reservations. We got there and the restaurant was empty (that should have been our first clue) but it still took at least 20 minutes to seat us. Then when we were seated it took us 10 minutes or more for someone to take our order. The whole entire menu has changed for the worse as well. The food was terrible and the Bloody Mary was disgusting. We're really sad. We are going to have to find a new brunch spot. We will not be returning. read more

The Block is a lovely farm to table restaurant on university avenue in provo. It is refreshingly unexpected for being in a strip mall. It is a bit brightly lit for a date night restaurant, but the brick wall and open kitchen are very pretty. We started with the charcuterie board, which I wouldn't recommend. None of us particularly loved their choice of cheeses and accoutrements, however the prosciutto and nuts were our favorite part. The gnocchi was very good, I'd highly recommend it. The English muffin was so burned in the bottom that one needed a steak knife to enable cutting the muffin. The Hollandaise sauce was great and the egg was cooked to perfection. Came here tonight to celebrate Valentine's Day and was happy to find another delicious more upscale restaurant in utah county! Our server made some great recommendations which really helped us enjoy our meal. She recommended the block toast for our appetizer - and I'll be honest, I was SUPER apprehensive. I didn't know exactly what to expect. But it was my favorite bite of the night! Just enough heat, the apple jam wasn't too sweet, bacon added just enough saltiness. It was well balanced. Would've loved the piece of sourdough to be toasted on both sides but other wise a pretty impeccable dish. The wedge was good! Nothing to write home about but yummy. The spring trout was great. I was nervous the chorizo tomato jam was going to overpower everything else- which I think it could've, but I balanced my spoonfuls well. The gnocchi were light and fluffy. Loved the au jus it was set in. The chocolate cake had a ganache on top, a coffee crème anglaise, rum whipped cream and an almond crunch on top. It needed every component but was tasty. Though it wasn't too sweet (I'm not a fan of overly sweet desserts). I would've loved some finishing salt on top just to balance everything out. My biggest qualm with block, is their chairs. The baked ricotta was amazing and i would eat that again, same with the cake. But everything else was way over-priced and underwhelming. We had a pear salad that was literally costco spring mix with some overripe pears in it, no dressing no nothing. They were kind enough to also throw in a handful of walnuts in there, coming to a price of $16 for a salad you get at a school cafeteria. Lasagna legitimately tasted like chef boyardee, which wouldn't have been bad if it wasn't $30. The duck breast was very promising and was actually very flavorful, just super chewy. Interior was reminiscent of an upscale texas roadhouse and we came home somehow smelling like barbecue / smoke? Drove up to Provo wanting some decent brunch. Was disappointed. I question the hygiene of this place. I travel a lot and rarely get upset stomach. I ordered the fresh squeeze orange juice. With 10 mins of taking a few sips, my stomach started to rumble. And it was bad. I had runny stomach for the next 4 hours until everything was purged. This is the official petition to create a second Block Restaurant location further north. This was my first time dining at Block Restaurant and I feel like it's just hiding out in Provo. I know so many people who would eat here on a regular basis if it was closer to SLC. The food, the service, the mimosas...It's all something to write home about. Our group tried a little bit of everything, but the crowd pleasers were the burrito, benny, and the brioche (French toast). All of them bursting with flavor, filled with fresh ingredients, and prepared to perfection. I could write a love story about the barbacoa burrito. It was probably the best breakfast burrito I've ever had. No other burrito can live up to it's legendary goodness. One of the few places of this sort in the Utah valley. Really inventive and top-quality food and flavors, plus a terrific bar with sensational cocktails. I've adored just about everything I've ever had here. When we've brought prospective hires in at my place of employment, this is the place we bring them to just to demonstrate that we have something like a culture here, and it's not all burgers and milkshakes far as the eye can see. The servers are always friendly and attentive. I love the atmosphere of the place - quiet, but with a moderate din of activity. In other words, you don't need to raise your voice for conversation. I've heard some say that it favors the carnivore a bit too much. I can see the point, but I've never lacked for great options. Wonderful for brunch, dinner, or whatever you're in the mood for. We visited on a Sunday morning for brunch. I got a Bloody marry Which was solid, good spice, small for the money though. The wife got the Manmosa which was "fine", heavy on the champagne which isn't her fav. We were with some friends so we have some good insight across a few dishes. Chef special : Plantains were epic, whomever makes those needs a raise! Chorizo was tasty, would have used one more though. "I could have just had the plantains and chorizo". It needs a salsa though. Egg's Benedict: Perfectly cooked eggS, Potatoes were crispy and tasty. For sure would order again. Chicken fried steak: The steak was a little too chewy, I am guessing that using a New York for this would naturally turn out on the fattier side and frying isnt going to render is down much. The spice in the hash browns was strong but good. The cheese and jalapeño were mixed in, not on top. The gravy was bomb, creamy and super flavorful. I would put that on anything. Block Hash: Very good. Bacon was crispy. The sauce stuff was amazing. The zucchini and yellow squash added a nice texture. It needed a little salt/pepper or salsa. The salsa on the side ended up being $1/each for maybe one ounce. Kinda silly. It if was a cup, that might be more reasonable. Atmosphere: A lot of nice wood against grays and metal creates a great welcoming feel. The little blocks they use for the check were fun. The menu is seasonal and the flavors are fire every time I have gone it. It's for smaller, more intimate groups. I'll get a picture next time I go, however it's likely it won't be on the menu when you visit. There is not one thing on the menu currently that I've had before, but that's part of the fun. Very average. Looked like it might be an interesting place based in the pics. Walking thru the door, you can tell you're going to be leaving w your clothes smelling like fryer grease. Poor ventilation. Honestly. Smells like a fast food joint. The zucchini fritters were very greasy. Did like the yoghurt puree that came w it tho. That and the little bit of arugula under the fritters was the best part. The gnocchi with the short ribs had good flavor, but came out at room temperature. Obviously it had been sitting somewhere for a while. Would've mentioned it to the waitress, but she didn't come around again until it was time for the bill. The Malbec, by the glass was decent. Tried Block Restaurant for a Father's Day Brunch and it was quite delicious! First of all I was very surprised that this restaurant, in Provo, is open for Sunday Brunch and decided to give it a try. When walking in the restaurant has an open/contemporary feel. It also felt a bit small at first, but turned out to be larger than it appeared. As far as the food goes, the breakfast potatoes were very flavorful and crunchy, the avocado Benedict was amazing and the unicorn syrup was something to not be missed!! Unfortunately there were a few disappointments for me which were the food was a tad on the salty side, and I'm someone who is generous with the salt. Also, we really wanted to try the Short Rib Poutine, however they are no longer serving that yet it has not been removed from the menu. Overall I am not opposed to making another trip from SLC to try something on their dinner menu. read more

I went in for Sunday brunch. They were very busy. I had a reservation and still had to wait about 10 minutes. The space is really cute and trendy. They have a fun neon sign. They have a really good cocktail menu and different kinds of mimosas. The food is all farm to table and honestly incredible. The food alone would get five stars from me. The burger is one of the yummiest I've ever had. The service was definitely slower. We waited a while to order and both the drinks and the food took a while to arrive. Every time I go to the Block Restaurant, it's a beautiful experience. So beautiful I forget to take pictures, I lose myself in the food and completely immerse myself in the experience they provide. The staff is always personable and accommodating! We brought our fifteen-month-old and our five-year-old daughters and the manager came out with a beet purée and offered our daughter three "kids menu" items for our five-year-old, she chose the grilled cheese. I was highly impressed and so grateful for the unexpected kid-friendly items! The House Made Potato Gnocchi is a staple! It is a MUST when you dine here!! The gnocchi is beautifully made and perfectly seasoned...but the gravy that it's doused in?? AMAZING. Couple that with a bit of the braised short rib, a little dollop of the crème and a pickled shallot? Perfect Bite. I love this dish! The Rainbow Trout is one of my husbands favorite dishes when dining here. The fish is perfectly cooked and seasoned well. The skin is crispy! I think that's one of the reasons why my husband loves the dish because he knows the amount of work and expertise that goes into getting that yummy crisp. For me, I adored the bok choy! I wish there was more, it was beautifully prepared and the seasoning was perfect! For dessert we had fresh peaches from a local farm (they tasted like they were from Allreds Orchard that is down the street from the restaurant) on top of panna cotta. It was the perfect finish to an amazing dining experience. I would recommend The Block over and over again. Before you read my review, a few things about me (my biases): 1. I'm a southern Californian who live in north Orange County. 2. I'm an immigrant from Taiwan whose parents owned sandwich shops nearly my entire time of growing up. 3. He apologized over and over again for how long everything took, but I didn't think it was bad. It was a busy lunch time crowd, sure, but it's not the worst I've seen. In fact, I thought they were fine. Nathan explained to us that everything is farm to table and it sure tasted like it. The pancakes were DELICIOUS, and everything was just so FRESH. It's the best eggs Benedict I've ever had. The sauce was NOT heavy, and they didn't pour it all over my food and make everything soggy. I usually order it on the side just in case, but holy cow, I'm glad it didn't. It covered my poached eggs nicely (btw, DELICIOUS eggs). The unicorn syrup was as every bit as magical as Nathan promised, and I've never had such a syrup but it was good! This is not going to be a super diverse place for breakfast. Because of their promise to quality and farm to table ideals, their menu was rather limited. Having said that, we all found something we liked and everything was in top quality condition. I cannot recommend this place enough for people who want a top quality breakfast. I will definitely be back again.
