Had lunch with a few colleagues at Black Sheep Café while in Provo. We stopped in on a Saturday around 12:30 PM. The restaurant was fairly busy, and despite not having reservations, we were seated immediately. I started with the Yanabah iced tea ($5), a Navajo herbal tea. It was light, refreshing, and not overly herbal. We shared a wedge salad to start, which came with a chipotle mayo dressing that was excellent. It had more heat than the chipotle flavors I am typically used to, and I really enjoyed the extra kick. For my entrée, I ordered the Navajo taco with BBQ pork ($15)? which was outstanding. The taco is served on freshly made fry bread that was fluffy, slightly sweet, and had subtle honey notes. It was piled with a generous portion of perfectly cooked pulled pork coated in a sweet glaze, along with some fresh vegetables and herbs that added both crunch and more flavor, with chipotle sauce on the side. The fry bread was fresh and flavorful, the pork was tender, and the combination of herbs, vegetables, and sauce created a great balance of sweet, savory, and spicy flavors. Black Sheep Café offers a unique menu inspired by Native American and Southwestern flavors, and I wish I had more time to come back and try more of the menu. Service was great! Our waitress had recommendations (none I was eyeing though) and gave us amble time to peruse the menu. Green Chili Goat Cheese Queso was amazing. Light & Creamy with good flavor. The chips it's served with are thicker and sturdy! (No breaking in the dip) I got the Red Chili Beef Taco- it's a stewed beef on their fry bread (which was very good). It was tasty. Not much heat, so if you like spicy that's not your plate! But over all good portion and great flavor. The beans are bland, so that was a slight disappointment. But overall it was a great environment for a delicious meal. Would go back and try some of their other options! read more

I tried to cater this for a private event but after 10+ business days of trying I went with another company. The contact information on BYU's website is outdated and when they connected me with the proper person they responded so sporadically. After quickly responding to their messages they stopped responding and a week later replied. Me and my colleagues did stop by for lunch because I did want to enjoy a local business and try that lavender honey flatbread. It was good. We shared we were limited on time and they said they'd be quick but unfortunately we had to take our food to go. The salads were good. The staff in the restaurant was very friendly. read more

This is such a warm place, with delightful service. Was looking for something unique and we got it. The fry bread, the nachos, the tacos, all amazing. Wow! This was my first time having Native American food, and this is an experience I will never forget. Black Sheep Cafe has a fair share of regulars and new customers (from what I could overhear). I made a reservation through Yelp, arrived early and was able to be sat early. I found street parking easily out front on a Wednesday night. The frybread?? So good, I had to have it for appetizer and dessert. Think of a roll that is super light and fluffy, more on the croissant side but not flaky... Not the best description at all so u suggest you try it yourself. The hog jowl tacos were amazing. Hog jowl was described to me as a sweet pork. I think Black Sheep Cafe has lots of potential, the staff were nice enough and the food was decent. However, the pricing is atrocious! I paid nearly $100 for two people which was disappointing given the small portions that are not very filling. Again, I think it has potential if they can find a way to better balance the food to price ratio. read more

This is a nicer restaurant in the Provo area and a great place to come with coworkers or friends & family! The navajo tacos are yummy (I just wish mine was fried a bit more for more crunch!) I made reservations to eat at their 11:30 AM opening. We arrived and had a table waiting in the front window. Friendly hostess and waitress. The decor was beautiful and looked to be native. I ordered the Black Sheep Navajo taco and my son ordered the Red Chili Beef Navajo taco. We shared a street corn. My son had the cactus pear lemonade and I had the Navajo iced tea to drink. This is my mother-in-law's favorite restaurant so we go here for a lot of birthdays. The food is always really good, and the staff is very nice. It is a little smaller of a dining room, which makes it a very intimate setting. Their Navajo and Joel tacos are everyone's go to dishes, they are really good. I did try the green chili soup last time and it was Rich and Hardy With slow cooked meat. That was really flavorful. They have a bunch of staples that I think they do really well, we were sad to find out that they don't do their mousse anymore, unless you are catering an event. read more

Roadtripping through Utah and saw the Black Sheep Cafe on Yelp. They had me at Navajo Tacos and then I saw Lavender honey fry bread and told my husband I know exactly where were are eating. We got there and our server was phenomenal. He was native and he and my husband hit it off about the jewelry they each had on. We ordered the Navajo Tacos, Green Chili pork taco and two Mexican cokes. My husband absolutely devoured his green chili taco. I like my Navajo taco but thought the beans needed salt and I needed more lettuce and salsa ( less beans too). For dessert we had (ok I mean I had) the Lavender taco. I'm saying that was almost a religious experience! We live in Missouri but if we ever are here again I'll be getting another lavender taco for sure read more

Everything extremely fresh with a lot of activity in the kitchen. The menu isn't vast but everything looks amazing. Typically, people don't like to be referred to as the "black sheep," so I would have thought this would extend to restaurants. However, Black Sheep Cafe is as far from the societal reject that this name might insinuate. My sister and I visited to celebrate my birthday and had an exquisite time. The food was terrific-mad props to the Black Sheep Salad with an addition of chicken...yum! We paired it with an order of fry bread, which mostly negated the healthy choices we made with salads. Oh well. I've never had fry bread like it-both sweet and savory at the same time. Sooo good! I also ordered the pear lemonade-it was hot day and I was in the mood for a cool refresher. Lavender bread was awesome! I could eat it every day! The filet bruschetta was super good. The mash potatoes at the base snuck up on us, you almost don't notice until you notice them you want more! This place has gone downhill. It used to be so good. They changed the recipe for the green chili stew. Now it sucks. So sad.

My dad and I came here after a day hike and wanted to try something downtown. The inside is cute and gives a very family owned feel. The bathrooms are quite far and require a code as the building is in a leases strip mall area of downtown. The place was packed, which is a good sign and we got sat fairly quickly. They have a student of Chihuly's glass as art, which is a great addition for Seattle folks like us! We had wonderful service and our table looked out over the street. For dinner I had the meatloaf special in a yummy sweet vinegar type sauce. The meatloaf was flakey with carrot, which I thought was super yummy and the portion was huge. I also really enjoyed the vegetable medley because it had edamame. It was super good in the sauce. My dad had a salad with chicken. The salad was HUGE and they gave a generous portion of chicken. I also had a glass of their prickly pear lemonade with vodka that was refreshing with their local vodka. Highly recommend and would def come back on my next visit!! read more

Great food and excellent, friendly service. A friend of ours recommended this cafe to us, after looking at their menu online I couldn't wait to check it out. I was torn between the green chile stew and the pozole. The server said both were great but the stew had more veggies, I ordered the green chile stew with a side of fry bread & honey- it was very yummy! Would order again. Hubby got the hanger steak, said it was tasty and he would order again. I also ordered the prickly cactus marg- it was different and tasty. Heard good things about this place! We had reservations on a Friday evening, but they put us in the corner table right next to the entrance, hot lights are directly shining on your face - super hot area and their A/C was not working either so the temperature inside the restaurant was uncomfortable. Appetizers were probably BETTER than their actual entrees. Do NOT get the hanger steak , it had some balsamic/sweet glaze on it (which does go well with a steak in general in my opinion) and the steak was overdone; it tasted like a 2 day old pot roast. Waitress was accommodating and offered to get it redone or get me something else, which I opted for the wedge salad . Wedge salad's dressing tasted like fry sauce , which was also strange! Went here for the first time with the entire family for lunch. Really liked the ambiance, it was really cold today and it was warm inside. Didn't need jackets on and was comfortable in my t-shirt. Waiter gave us solid recommendations as we shared an appetizer (Hog Jowl Nachos) which were fantastic!! Wife and my youngest son each had a burger and 3 oldest boys each had the Red Chili Beef Taco and I had the green chili taco and no one complained! lol! We were there for a BYU game and the food was pretty tasty, however the service was very slow. I will say they were extremely busy so I'm not sure what it's like in a regular day. Service was wonderful - the staff was kind and very accommodating for me & my service dog. The food was ok - I got the Traditional Black Sheep Navajo Tacos (vegetarian option). I loved the toppings, the beans were incredibly flavorful. I wasn't a huge fan of the bread, it reminded me of an Elephant Ear you would get at the fair. It made the dish oddly sweet, which I don't enjoy when eating Mexican-type cuisine. I would recommend this place if you're looking for something quick and easy with kind staff. After waiting several minutes, as we had tickets for a performance, we went to the front desk. The waitress was sorry, but she had LOST MY DEBIT CARD. She apologized, but said she would keep looking, and call me later that night. I gave her my contact information. One of my favorite restaurants. Period. Anything with the hog jowl is incredible. Try the wedge salad, hog jowl nachos, and hog jowl tacos. Also, the prickly cactus lemonade is TO DIE FOR! This place has my heart. The ambiance is phenomenal. A small, intimate restaurant with big windows and beautiful decor. Impeccable service every single time I come. The staff is trained well. The food is excellent. So much so, that I bring out-of-town guests here whenever I meet them in Provo. I love the fried chicken. But my favorite is the humble posole. I loved the Honey Lavender Fry bread, and the Hog Jowl Nachos were the best I've ever eaten. I will never order the Beef tenderloin Bruschetta again. The meat on my piece was maybe 5 pieces the size of baby m &ms and there was way too much mashed potatoes. They were very stingy with the meat. We had the pork enchiladas, the presentation was beautiful, but there was no taste of verde sauce. They must have dipped the tortillas in the sauce, let it drip off and then fill it. you could not taste any verde sauce. I prefer my enchiladas swimming in it.
