We had a good dinner at the Black Sheep Cafe in Provo, although it was extremely loud in the restaurant, which made carrying on a conversation difficult. The kitchen is adjacent to the dining room, and the noise of the kitchen staff and the patrons conversing was a cacophony of noise! The Green Chili Frites with crusty french fries layered with green chili and a fried egg were terrific! It was the best part of our meal. I also enjoyed the Blue Corn Enchiladas with a flavorful pork and green chili sauce. Their homemade Adobe hot sauce helped elevate the spicy and delicious. The portion size was perfect to not be too full or to be left wanting more. The lemonade had a good flavor but was a bit too sweet for me. There were no issues with out food and they were willing to help accommodate an allergy by serving something on the side for everyone else to try while the person could still try the base of the food (the honey rosemary fry bread). Black Sheep Cafe is one of the nicer dinning places in Provo, but I don't think their food match the price. The food is decent but nothing that I'll be excited to go back for. My husband and I had the Filet Mignon Bruschetta and wedge salad for starters, and for mains: Navajo Tacos and Chimichanga. The bruschetta is not a bruschetta. Doesn't look or taste like one. Also It had like 4 tiny pieces of filet mignon sprinkled on top (it's so tiny that it could be any cut of meat and no one would know) and was loaded with potato purée, cheese, basil and tomatoes. I thought it was a little deceiving what they did with the naming of the dishes... definitely did not get what was described. The wedge salad was awesome! A fresh salad with flavor in every bite. The traditional Navajo Taco and chimichanga both came with rice and beans. They don't look like a lot of the insides are stuffed with meat which made it very filling. We both picked pork for the filling and the chimichanga meat was more dry. The meat was great in the Taco. The fry bread was a little disappointing because it was not hot anymore and a bit soggy. I loved the Honey Lavender Fry bread, and the Hog Jowl Nachos were the best I've ever eaten. I will never order the Beef tenderloin Bruschetta again. The meat on my piece was maybe 5 pieces the size of baby m &ms and there was way too much mashed potatoes. They were very stingy with the meat. We had the pork enchiladas, the presentation was beautiful, but there was no taste of verde sauce. They must have dipped the tortillas in the sauce, let it drip off and then fill it. you could not taste any verde sauce. I prefer my enchiladas swimming in it. Black Sheep Cafe is conveniently located on University Avenue in the heart of downtown Provo. This area is the perfect mix of a smaller family town + growing city. The area does not have massive skyscrapers or a bunch of brand new buildings but it has so much charm. Black Sheep Cafe fits the downtown Provo vibe perfectly. They make it very easy to get a reservation into their restaurant. You can make a reservation directly through their website or through the Yelp app. It is always hard to know how busy a business is so I appreciate being able to reserve my spot ahead of time. Luckily, when I was looking at going to Black Sheep Cafe, they had all kinds of time slots available. I am sure they get much busier on weekend nights. Upon walking in, it wasn't quiet by any means. Almost every single table was occupied by people enjoying dinner with friends and family. I also noticed that they have a pretty small dining area. There was a few small tables available but it has less seating than most restaurants--this makes me love their reservation system even more! It is so nice to be able to secure a spot here ahead of time, rather than needing to arrive and go on the waitlist. I was greeted before I could take a picture of the menu, which says a lot. My server was super sweet and had a smile on her face the whole time. It sounds like they have quite an assortment of drinks to choose from, including some interesting cocktails. However, I just opted for a water this time. The filet mignon bruschetta intrigued me so I decided to get that for starters. Then, I came here to try their famous navajo tacos--the green chile pork ones! The food came out super quick! First, came the filet mignon bruschetta--I was so excited to try this! It was absolutely delicious and incomparable to anything else I've had. Essentially, there was a piece of bread on the bottom, then mashed potatoes, some small veggies, pieces of filet mignon, and strips of basil. I only have one recommendation: something should be modified with the bread. I am not sure what, but I have a few ideas. Cook the bread and make it more of a toast--the bread itself was very heavy on the stomach and took away from all the other flavors on top. Maybe use a different bread--a croissant or something light and flakey would pair great with it! Lastly, it may be even better with a potato skin or a twice baked potato as the base. I understand that some of these may make it not as "bruschetta-like" but I feel it would definitely improve the dish. Bruschetta typically has a crostini anyways, and I felt like this was more of a slice of bread on the bottom. It was still absolutely delicious though, don't get me wrong. This was something I have never had anywhere before and I have a lot of respect for any restaurant that brings a new creation to town. The star of the show came out a short while after the appetizer. I don't think I have ever had navajo tacos before and it is not typically something I would order but I was so thrilled to try something out of the ordinary. Admittedly, when it arrived at my table, I wasn't certain on how to dig in...maybe someone can let me know how it's done. It reminds me of a torta--where it is on a flat tortilla and not in the shape of a taco or a burrito. Except, instead of being a tortilla, it is a piece of frybread. The meal came with a side of rice and a side of beans too. I was a bit surprised to see full chunks of pork on the navajo tacos. I was expecting it to be shredded pork, but it was still good. The green chile sauce was delicious and the toppings gave it great texture and contrasting flavor. All in all, I had an amazing time at Black Sheep Cafe and I wish I would've visited them sooner. The service was great from start to finish and I feel the prices are pretty reasonable for what you get. You truly get what you pay for here. They are in an awesome location and I can think of a plethora of reasons to visit. They are a great spot for a date night but also a great place to meet coworkers for lunch. They have unique flavors that other businesses do not bring to the table, which is a major reason I will be back very soon. read more

We were passing through Provo on our way to Bryce Canyon and were looking for a restaurant that served alcohol. Not as easy as it sounds (for anyone unfamiliar with Provo, I guess). We landed on Black Sheep and had one of the best meals of our entire two-week trip. The service was amazing: attentive without being intrusive; quick but extremely personable. A few people have told me to try it but never recommended anything to try or anything like that. We order the Black Sheep Burger (whoch was money), shrimp & grits (my wife is still talking about this - I need to learn how to cook grits ), and the Hog Jowl nachos (Sheesharoni these were smackin bruh). We came in pretty late on a Monday to use a coupon, and after waiting about ten minutes for our waiter to come to our table, they were out of both my first and second choice of entrees as well as the dessert we wanted. On top of that, the staff all got really loud and rowdy in the back at one point while there were still several parties in the restaurant. Their prickly pear lemonade is amazing, but the food is generally only okay. The black sheep salad in particular is pretty flavorless, while the Navajo tacos end up with very soggy fry bread. The sweet potato fries were good, but I think they were actually yam fries, considering they had white flesh instead of orange, were dry, and were not very sweet? We ordered the fry bread with ice cream for dessert, and the ice cream tasted like cheap store-brand, which is too bad. We're not local to Provo. We're there once a year at most (at MOST) and many years have passed since we first visited Black Sheep (this was prepandemic). Since then, whenever we talk to someone going to Provo, we've recommended visiting Black Sheep as a place with excellent and unique food. This week we made our second-ever visit. And . . . what happened??? The side of rice was no better than Rice-a-Roni circa 1975. The "chicken confit" was just dry shredded chicken. None of the flavors were particularly striking. The tomatoes were not particularly fresh. The combinations of ingredients did not amaze or even interest. Visiting Black Sheep in 2024 was not the revelatory experience of visit one. It was more like getting second-rate Mexican food from a truck stop. If we'd paid $7.50 per entree from some fast-food place (instead of the $21ish we did), that would have been fine. I guess. We wouldn't have returned to that place but we wouldn't be getting on Yelp to complain either. Seriously, what happened? Did the ownership change? Did covid rob the chef of his sense of taste? Why does the food feel like it comes from a completely different restaurant? Also. So slow. We were tempted to walk out many times out of simple boredom and frustration. Kinda wish we had. Drove in from Nevada and even though we had a reservation at 8:00, we didn't get sat until 8:30. The place is super busy! If you don't have a reservation it might be really hard to get a table. Lots of big parties for a tiny place. The Yelp page says there is not waiter service?? There are servers.. we started with the green chili goat cheese- really good !!!! Shared the green chili taco, loved the fry bread. The table also had the wedge salad and the nachos. Server was David, really nice. Had a couple bottles of cab and called it a night. While visiting Provo, we tried this restaurant and were very happy with both the service and the food.

I avoid Provo as much as possible EXCEPT when I'm in the mood for some Black Sheep Cafe. I've loved this place ever since they opened! I've always thought it was one of the better food establishments in the Downtown Provo are. Their "from-scratch" kitchen standard sets it apart from its competitors. And the cocktails are made incredibly well! In my opinion, the green-chili theme was a little heavy handed on the menu. But to my surprise, each dish was executed wonderfully and I didn't feel the need to go on a green-chili fast once the meal was over! So that's saying something. The lavender on the frybread seemed unnecessary. I feel like another herb choice could have truly elevated this dish! But the lavender just made us feel like the frybread had been washed in soap beforehand. Overall, we all enjoyed the cocktails and the green-chili frites above everything else. read more

I wanted to love Black Sheep and it's been a couple years since I tried it once before. It was such an up and down experience. First, the service was top notch. Our server was awesome and helpful and friendly. Kudos there. Green chili frites were again very good. Can't go wrong with those. Got the shrimp and grits appetizer. Two pieces of shrimp. And the grits were horribly bland. As in, I ate a couple bites and couldn't do anymore. Low point of the meal there. Other low point was the size of the Navajo taco. I realize that they are "finer dining" here, but I've been around the block with Navajo tacos and they are normally huge! Even my friend, who had never had a Navajo taco, said "that's mini".
