We loved our Black Bear experience. It was our first time trying it and it's what you'd expect. Giant portion sizes for average tasting food, but everything was great and we have no complaints! Black Bear I think has stayed pretty true to the diner experience. Prices are very reasonable, so it's a you get what you paid for experience. Our server was very kind, but service was a tiny bit slow for a half empty restaurant. I would say overall food is bland, but nothing a little sauce or seasoning can't fix. Fries are soft, not crispy how I like them, but the chicken tenders were very crispy. The biscuits and gravy were bland, but they were some of the biggest and softest biscuits I've ever tried. Mother's day might not be the best option, there were reasons it was the right day. Their service was much better, and the food was still solid. Man I really hate giving low stars! However this seemed like it would be the one for this. Sadly we were very let down this late morning. We got there about 11 and were seated within 15 min which was great! However the service lacked big time. Our server didn't check up on us throughout the meal, or we would have addressed these issues while there. Our meals were brought out one at a time, multiple minutes in between each time. And we were very disappointed with the food. I had ordered the California Eggs Benedict that came out very last, and what not done well. 1. The bacon was burnt and I couldn't cut through it(same with my sons kids meal, he wouldn't even eat it) 2 the eggs were cooked well. Which on that dish they should be runny. 3. Most of the hash was burnt as well. My husband got the grizz and said it was alright. He liked his eggs, we split our dishes and shared. However we probably shouldn't have done that because now we don't know whose dish made us sick or not. The place seems to be under new management because it just isn't doing to good. I went in on a Wednesday evening, and there weren't a lot of people. I got the Bear's Choice with sweet cream waffle, eggs, and sausage. I don't know if it's because I ordered takeout, so the food was not fresh and toasty anymore, but everything tasted only average. The waffle got a paw print on it, which was really cute, but I didn't love the texture and would probably try their pancakes or toasts next time. Also a bit sad that they didn't provide any ketchup for the eggs. Lots of people say the portions here are huge, but this entree I got also cost $10.99 so I think the portion was only reasonable considering the price. So, I've been to Black Bear diner before in San Diego, but this is our first time in Orem, Utah. I must say there's a consistent feel in the restaurants as you try different around the country, as I have. I've always enjoyed Black Bear. I don't come back as often as I'd like. Usually the service is ok. Never great but usually ok. Things get topped off. If I go in the evening I usually get the meatloaf. And it's usually served thick, hot and cooked to near perfection. Today... it was served medium heat, thinly sliced and very soggy. Yes I ate most of it. But I was hungry. The salad is usually served first on a small plate but tonight it was served second after the main course and it came overfilled in a small bowl and whatever I forked out it always spilled out onto the table or seat. First time at a Black Bear Diner and I thought it was splendid. The ambience is casual, but fun. Lots of bear stuff The food definitely has the "wow" factor when it comes out. Large portions especially for the price. Biscuits rivaling the size of your face. Some people thought the stuffed blackberry french toast was too sweet, but I enjoyed it. Food was good. I got the hungry bear chicken fried steak and eggs. It came with two MASSIVE rolls. It was a ton of food. We have been here before and I remember the food being decent. I have never been totally blown away by the food but it's always decent. The service was wicked slow, like it took 15 min just to get our drinks. I believe they were understaffed so I try to be too rough on them, but it took over an hour for my wife and I to have breakfast. I knocked it down 1 star just for how long everything took. I believe it was the manager, that stood at the kitchen window barking out orders to the cooking staff. iIt didn't seem to do any good as we waited about twenty minutes or more to get our food. The order came to us wrong and not hot. We both ordered extra crispy hash browns that came out just barley fried, a little on the raw side, the scrambled eggs were the hardest eggs ive ever been served. the cook that cooked them needs some serious retraining. When I got up to leave, my shirt was stuck to the back of the booth, I looked back to see why and because of the design of the both and its dark color I could not see why. When I got home , I took off my shirt an had what appeared to be syrup, was all over my shirt and back of my pants. Very upset about our experience at this restaurant, and will not return. We LOVE stopping at Black Bear - they have some of the best chicken fried steak around! I ordered that this time and LOVED it but wished I'd gotten the gravy on the side and tried the Turkey gravy as well. Their pancakes are super delish too and it took a lot of strength to not eat my daughter's cab cakes. And ice cream. The regular menu is super impressive and the fact that breakfast of served all day is a mega-win. The kids menu also includes breakfast options and our girls were thrilled! I definitely loved the inside seating here. It's very much like a mom & pop type of feeling. It's also a very busy place. It got full fast and had people waiting so if you want breakfast, get here as soon as they open. The staff was friendly and nice, but I think a smile on their faces would have made it feel more welcome I got the Chicken Fried Steak Benedict and it was pretty good. It's like county breakfast meets city breakfast. I think I'm more of a fan of smaller hash, hash-browns but they were still good. This place was quite empty on a Monday night, so our table of 10 was seated quickly. Our server was very nice and attentive. It was great for our birthday celebration, as the atmosphere was relatively more quiet. We were also offered a complementary dessert for the birthday boy! Would definitely recommend this place if you're incredibly hungry, as the portions are massive! Overall, good taste, friendly customer service and huge portions!
