Between my partner and I, we ordered the quinoa risotto, funeral potato croquette, sweet potato gratin, and wagyu filet. The sweet potato gratin was nice but more suited for a dessert option - very sweet with the oat crumble on top, would have loved this with ice cream on top for dessert but felt oddly situated with the rest of our dinner. Quinoa risotto was really wet. Tasted okay (a little boring) but texturally was confusing. The croquette was good, but my first bite had hot and cool temperature differences. In fairness, I did not mention this to my waiter. Warmed up later as leftovers was great. The filet - no complaints! Good cut and plenty of meat for $75. Five stars for food, two stars for service. I went here on a Tuesday night for dinner. The food was surprisingly creative and exceeded my expectations. Diners are encouraged to order one item for every two people from each of the following sections: "for the table," "starches," "mains," and "veggies." The wagyu beef and crispy potato salad were exceptional. The beef was beautifully cooked and a "Chilean style" chimichurri added pleasant heat and vibrant orange color. The potato salad was so fun to eat and a textural delight. We also ordered the goat cheese "for the table," which was an innovative alternative to the burrata seen in the appetizer section of so many menus. The bread served with the cheese had a wonderful char, which provided a delicious bitter counterbalance to the sweetness of the cheese. The shishito peppers were well prepared and seasoned, but not nearly as special as the other plates. I could have made this one at home. Right before we left, I overheard the front of house lead tell a couple who just arrived that there would be a short wait because the people seated by the window were taking their "sweet time" in leaving. His disdain was presumably in reference to my husband and me (we were leaving exactly 90 minutes and $180 after being seated). Came here for breakfast for the first time while in Utah for school and finally got to try this spot with my husband. We're visiting from CA and have been here for a few weeks now. The breakfast was really good, and Dustin provided great service. We enjoyed it enough to make a reservation for dinner the same day. Dinner was okay overall. We ordered the Brussels sprouts, crispy potato salad, and wagyu steak. The side dishes were generous and very tasty. However, the steak was a bit disappointing, as it tasted more like a tri-tip than what we expected from wagyu. The service at dinner was noticeably different from our breakfast experience. We waited quite a while before being greeted, and the drinks also took a while to be served. Additionally, the tables are placed very close together, and the noise level from nearby tables made it difficult to have a conversation with my husband. read more

Food was amazing! Farm to table, fresh ingredients in every dish. The crab cake benedict and fried chicken biscuits and gravy were a favorite with the group. The portions are generous so come hungry. The service was far greater than the food though! We had two reservations for six each, and our server quickly offered us a 12 top in the private room. It worked out perfectly for my boisterous family. Despite being busy our server continued to go above and beyond from french press coffees, special food orders, and even a group photo outside. My husband and I found this absolute gem of a spot while visiting Provo for the day and it was seriously one of the best brunches we've had anywhere in the state! He had the chorizo gravy biscuit at the suggestion of our wonderful server Dustin and practically licked the bowl clean. I had the Farm breakfast with hands down THE best little cheese omelet anywhere. We split the buttermilk pancakes and had to try some of their house strawberry rhubarb compote. My wife and I went for her birthday and it was a wonderful experience. The ambience is beautiful, stained glass windows, former jewelry store, so beautiful and open environment. The food was amazing, we got mashed potatoes and blackened carrots, and ribeye steak that was cooked perfectly and shared our meal and had plenty to take home. Service was very friendly and helpful. A big fail on my part to not take photos of this place, but all the more reason to visit. The location feels home-ish, super comfortable and almost like a trendy spot you'd find in San Fran or NYC. The vibe was chill and the staff was amazing. As it says in the name, the food is communal or family style which was great for our party of 6 work colleagues. We started first with some apps, a watermelon and feta salad, blistered shistos and a charcuterie, which was a good example of how fresh and amazing the rest of the meal would be. We followed that up with the skirt steak, halibut and the pork schnitzel. All was good, but that pork was to die for. Juicy and tender but fried to perfection. SO so good. We also added the rice (simple and good but I am sure could be skipped) and the funeral potato dish. Do two of those. Maybe three.. so good. Lastly... but I should say most importantly. Do not leave Communal without having their butterscotch dessert. We ordered a few, but that butterscotch was perfect. It was light, sweet but not tacky, and so freaking good. We come from San Diego and we're road tripping him from Montana when we stopped in Provo for our half way point. We wanted dinner and cocktails. It was hard to find anything good with both but I came across this place and decided to give it a go. It was AMAZING. Such a good concept too to share things. We took our servers advice and got a starter, a protein, a starch and a veg and they were perfect for two. And every single thing was delicious. Service was wonderful. It was relatively busy as a small seating area, but they were able to fit us in without a reservation, but in the future, I definitely will make a reservation ahead ahead of time as it's limited seating and fairly popular especially if that's a Tuesday night I'm sure the weekend is busier, the servers were very friendly and the menu was creative and seasonal and seem to be extremely fresh. This seems to be a super popular location. About an hour wait when we walked in as a group of 2 on a Tuesday night. We made a reservation for the next day for 4 people and got to try their food. The ambience is nice. There's the sound of chatter, food being cooked, all typical restaurant vibes. I really liked the way the large table was set up. It's a long bar with the table tops on top so no bumping into table legs underneath the table. We ordered the housemade pasta which was beef stroganoff, cous cous risotto, the New York strip steak and the organic roasted herb chicken. I enjoyed the carbs more than the protein at this restaurant haha. The texture of the cous cous in the risotto was really pleasant. The flavor of the risotto was pretty mild, but definitely had me reaching for it more than once. The chicken was good but we had a hard time sharing it due to it being one piece. The steak was flavorful but we found it to be a little fatty and a bit chewier than our liking. I also ordered a house made drink. The lime drink I believe. So refreshing. I definitely wanted to order another one but held back haha. I would say it's a nice place to check out. Firstly, let me say that I genuinely have nothing particular against this restaurant whatsoever. My review of this place is simply based on my many experiences at countless other establishments of the same or similar vein. Retro/modern decor, open kitchen, one page farm-to-table menus, and servers adorning artisan aprons with leather straps. If you've been to one of these places, you've been to them all lol. The server asks, "Have you been here before?", then proceeds to go into a somewhat long but familiar spiel we've all heard countless times before at places like these. This is all well and good though as long as the menu and food itself is clever, cohesive and just plain tasty. I've been to Communal twice now for both dinner and brunch, and the impression I'm left with is that the aforementioned are instead pretentious, uninspiring, and overall miss the mark of what should be well-executed & tasty fare. This isn't to say the food here is poorly cooked or badly prepared. Rather, it's another case of a restaurant that puts up a believable facade of a top-tier establishment, yet the inflated price points belie dishes that clearly fall short in so many ways. You are told, at least for dinner, that "portions are HUGE, and meant for sharing". This is true only for a few items like the pork chop and the broccoli, while being a flat out lie for dishes like the pasta of the day, the cornbread-pudding and the brûlée sweet potato (which is just a whole sweet potato cut in half and grilled for 12 DOLLARS). I had the trout which was a decent-sized skin-on long filet that was well cooked enough, but worth $40? Trout isn't an expensive fish, so the answer should be obvious. It was accompanied by a coriander-yogurt sauce, micro greens AND a lime wedge as if the yogurt sauce wasn't already enough to pucker the corners of your mouth. Again, just not a terribly cohesive and satisfying dish in my opinion. Yogurt sauce typically goes excellent with lamb and for a reason. Lamb is subtly sweet and very rich & fatty to which yogurt sauce cuts all the previous descriptors creating a balance that keeps you eating more. Trout is not sweet, not fatty, nor particularly rich as a fish. As such, it needs something hearty or earthy to compliment it. The yogurt sauce and lime wedge instead make you want to give up on such a dish rather quickly. I absolutely adore trout and couldn't bring myself to even finish my plate. It's as if the chef just put it all together for the sake of doing something edgy or to stroke their own ego for graduating at some reputable yet overpriced culinary school. The cornbread pudding was an insultingly small portion for the $12 price tag. It was watery, flat and devoid of any butter or cream within, the exception being the sour cream drizzle on top which had the same effect as the yogurt sauce on the trout. Just not in any way impressive nor worth the steep price. You can truly sell anything in a restaurant at just about any price point you want, but you HAVE to deliver. If the consumer is left questioning how much they paid for what they got, instead of relishing and rejoicing their meal, then you've simply done them a huge disservice. My colleagues and I had other dishes we shared, many of which were either barely above mid or just plain "meh". I reiterate though that the fault lies in execution rather than preparation. Everything was indeed cooked marvelously. I decided to give Communal a second chance for brunch a few days later and was met with a slightly better experience, but still not top-tier for the price. The biscuits and gravy, where the biscuits were more like hardened stale scones, and the chorizo gravy, while not bad, was still somewhat bland. If you're messing up biscuits and gravy in Provo, then either go back to the drawing board or just leave it to southerners. It isn't rocket science at the end of the day. The service on the other hand is perfectly adequate with zero issues. The decor is also rather charming, especially the bathrooms which are clean and well-maintained. Again, this review is not at all meant to be needlessly spiteful nor contemptuous. I'm just calling a spade a spade when it comes to the food. If you're going to charge what you charge, then don't rest on your laurels or rely on locals/patrons who are either easily impressed or just don't know any better. Some of us who come to town have "been around the block" so to speak. That being said, if all you need to do is step the food up itself to a noticeable degree, then you've got a decent thing going already and not too much work should be needed. Why not put in the effort to truly make this place great? read more
