Communal: 5/5. A local Provo staple! This family-style restaurant focuses on local and sustainable ingredients. I've been eating at Communal since 2016. I'm a huge fan of their brunch menu, and that's exactly what brought us here today. We started brunch with an order of home fries. They're always crispy, not greasy, and super yummy. These are a must! For our main course to share, we chose to go with French toast, biscuits, and gravy with sunny-side up eggs on top. The French toast was perfectly cooked, topped with a selection of berries, powdered sugar, and one of the best buttermilk syrups I've ever tasted. The biscuits and gravy were a pleasant surprise. I order these often when I come here, but the presentation is all new! Instead of four mini biscuits, you now get one big biscuit smothered in their delicious gravy. I personally feel like this new biscuit is more moist. The sunny-side-up eggs were cooked perfectly. Our server recommended we try the banana bread, and I'm so happy we decided to give it a try. It was moist and full of flavor. The mascarpone, candied pecans, and caramel sauce took this amazing treat to the next level. Overall, I had an amazing brunch experience at Communal. This is a quaint and intimate restaurant in the heart of downtown Provo. I highly recommend making reservations for the best experience. We came the day after Valentines Day and they were busy but we never felt rushed. Service was friendly and delightful. I believe we had Devin. He was attentive and extremely helpful with suggestions. They update their menu every few months or so to ensure that we are receiving fresh seasonal products. It was suggested that we pick one item from each category. The dishes are served family style and they are brought out as they're cooked so everything was still hot and fresh. We ordered 4 dishes and had plenty of food for the two of us, even took some home! We ordered the Brussel sprouts, funeral potato croquette, roasted sweet potato, and porterhouse pork chop. The Brussels were so YUMMY and cooked perfectly. The sauce they were tossed in was wonderful. The potato croquette was good - definitely worth trying. The pork chop was flavorful, juicy and cooked to perfection. But the SHINING STAR on the table was the roasted sweet potato. The hot honey, miso, and sesame seeds were so harmonious with the sweet potato. We both agreed that this is a dish we will crave and dream about for years to come. Truly. I would come back solely for that dish. After all this food, why not have a little more?! There's always room for dessert! We ordered the butterscotch pudding. It had chocolate cookies, whipped cream and salted caramel. AMAZING. I went to Communal for a private party, so we got to try basically everything on the menu and it was all delicious. The squash ravioli, hummus with chili flakes, and grilled carrots were especially good. Don't miss the butterscotch pudding. read more

Bright cozy spot with good food and friendly staff. The menu is a little hit & miss. Utah style scones (aka fried bread) would have been great except for the execution. Ours was VERY over cooked, and while they offered to remake it since they knew it was overcooked, that quality check should have happened before it left the kitchen. The chicken pesto BLT with an upgrade from chips to fries was a hit! Crispy fries, perfectly toasted bread, fresh veg, and chicken & bacon cooked to perfection. After reading the description of the funeral potatoes waffle, I had to try that! Alas, it was just a waffle that has an artificial taste, mushy texture, and was drowning in sauce. They should burry that one. With a price tag of $60 for 1 app and 2 entrees, I'd hoped for more consistency and quality. Utah!! You have done me well. Communal is such a gem. Walking in I loved how it gave me the sense of a private chef experience. It's not a large place but it's just perfect for an intimate dinner with friends. I came in on a Tuesday evening and it was pretty packed. The ambiance was settling. I liked that. Asher was our waited and his service didn't fall short anywhere. He became a part of my wonderful experience by not only being courtesy but his hospitality felt like we were guest in his home. As soon as I took a look at the menu, I couldn't help but want everything and we did. We couldn't help it. Every dish described on that menu was enticing. Too enticing for us not to try and I'm so glad we did. I'll start off with the fresh hot rolls that were brought to the table immediately. They were perfection. I love a starter of bread. Especially, got out of the oven. It always tells me I'm getting an experience. Someone thought of me when they created this dining experience. Give me all the bread!! Brussels - I love me some Brussels sprouts and even more so when they are tossed in bacon! Here's the kicker I thought I tasted pomegranate seeds and baby... it sent the dish to another level. DELICIOUS Charcuterie- I love love love when I see a charcuterie board in the menu. It gives... I'm fancy. Everything was fresh and delicious. Pork Chop - The pork chop was not the star for me, however, it doesn't take away from the dish. I think this came down to personal preference because everyone at the table seemed to enjoy it. I loved how it was served with kimchi. That was different and I found it enjoyable. Roasted Beets - I'm not sure these are the roasted beets but what I do know is they were made with love. They were perfection. Sweet and savory with a little kick. I truly enjoyed this dish. Squash - I don't think I got to try this dish. But it was gone by the end of the night so I'll leave you to interpretation Raviolis - listen here... listen here! This was my favorite dish. I wanted the plate to myself. It was heaven served up on a platter. Chefs kiss Chorizo Corn Bread Dressing - LOVED LOVED LOVED. This mixed with the damn sweet potato brought me back home to Sunday dinners. My taste buds were happy and I couldn't stop dancing in my chair. This dish made me extremely happy. Pork Belly - This right here... this dish right here... was thanging. The tangy sauce on top didn't take away from the crispy outer skin and the silky inside. Baby!! That pork had no chance. We demolished it. Sweet potato- DELICIOUS! Okay, whatever butter they serve with this puts it over the top. By the time I had one bit I went for a second one and almost took out the entire jar of butter. So damn good Chicken and dumplings - the chicken was juicy and tender. Super flavorful. I didn't care for the dumplings. But that comes down to personal preference. Overall, I see this place as quality. Elegant. But also Home. Not only was the experience a gift, the service was full of love and the food was a big hug from your grandma who knows how to throw down on the kitchen. This place made me happy . With a name like Communal, it's exactly what you think of, sharing a meal with those you go with. I really like this concept because it is a great way to try different items from the menu. Our server gave us recommendations on what a party of 2 should order, which turned out to be spot on. We ordered an entrée, side and dessert, which was plenty for the two of us. The food is well prepared and proportioned. Pro tip: order the Ginger Ale, it's so good! We found out that Communal is a rotating menu, and look forward to returning to try their new menu options. The aesthetic is rustic, modern and minimalist. Regarding seating, the tables are very close to each other (pretty much shoulder to shoulder). The couple next to us struck up a conversation to ask what we would recommend ordering. We ended up chatting with them throughout the night, which I found part of the experience and didn't mind. Firstly, let me say that I genuinely have nothing particular against this restaurant whatsoever. My review of this place is simply based on my many experiences at countless other establishments of the same or similar vein. Retro/modern decor, open kitchen, one page farm-to-table menus, and servers adorning artisan aprons with leather straps. If you've been to one of these places, you've been to them all lol. The server asks, "Have you been here before?", then proceeds to go into a somewhat long but familiar spiel we've all heard countless times before at places like these. This is all well and good though as long as the menu and food itself is clever, cohesive and just plain tasty. I've been to Communal twice now for both dinner and brunch, and the impression I'm left with is that the aforementioned are instead pretentious, uninspiring, and overall miss the mark of what should be well-executed & tasty fare. This isn't to say the food here is poorly cooked or badly prepared. Rather, it's another case of a restaurant that puts up a believable facade of a top-tier establishment, yet the inflated price points belie dishes that clearly fall short in so many ways. You are told, at least for dinner, that "portions are HUGE, and meant for sharing". This is true only for a few items like the pork chop and the broccoli, while being a flat out lie for dishes like the pasta of the day, the cornbread-pudding and the brûlée sweet potato (which is just a whole sweet potato cut in half and grilled for 12 DOLLARS). I had the trout which was a decent-sized skin-on long filet that was well cooked enough, but worth $40? Trout isn't an expensive fish, so the answer should be obvious. It was accompanied by a coriander-yogurt sauce, micro greens AND a lime wedge as if the yogurt sauce wasn't already enough to pucker the corners of your mouth. Again, just not a terribly cohesive and satisfying dish in my opinion. Yogurt sauce typically goes excellent with lamb and for a reason. Lamb is subtly sweet and very rich & fatty to which yogurt sauce cuts all the previous descriptors creating a balance that keeps you eating more. Trout is not sweet, not fatty, nor particularly rich as a fish. As such, it needs something hearty or earthy to compliment it. The yogurt sauce and lime wedge instead make you want to give up on such a dish rather quickly. I absolutely adore trout and couldn't bring myself to even finish my plate. It's as if the chef just put it all together for the sake of doing something edgy or to stroke their own ego for graduating at some reputable yet overpriced culinary school. The cornbread pudding was an insultingly small portion for the $12 price tag. It was watery, flat and devoid of any butter or cream within, the exception being the sour cream drizzle on top which had the same effect as the yogurt sauce on the trout. Just not in any way impressive nor worth the steep price. You can truly sell anything in a restaurant at just about any price point you want, but you HAVE to deliver. If the consumer is left questioning how much they paid for what they got, instead of relishing and rejoicing their meal, then you've simply done them a huge disservice. My colleagues and I had other dishes we shared, many of which were either barely above mid or just plain "meh". I reiterate though that the fault lies in execution rather than preparation. Everything was indeed cooked marvelously. I decided to give Communal a second chance for brunch a few days later and was met with a slightly better experience, but still not top-tier for the price. The biscuits and gravy, where the biscuits were more like hardened stale scones, and the chorizo gravy, while not bad, was still somewhat bland. If you're messing up biscuits and gravy in Provo, then either go back to the drawing board or just leave it to southerners. It isn't rocket science at the end of the day. The service on the other hand is perfectly adequate with zero issues. The decor is also rather charming, especially the bathrooms which are clean and well-maintained. Again, this review is not at all meant to be needlessly spiteful nor contemptuous. I'm just calling a spade a spade when it comes to the food. If you're going to charge what you charge, then don't rest on your laurels or rely on locals/patrons who are either easily impressed or just don't know any better. Some of us who come to town have "been around the block" so to speak. That being said, if all you need to do is step the food up itself to a noticeable degree, then you've got a decent thing going already and not too much work should be needed. Why not put in the effort to truly make this place great? read more

INCREDIBLE! We were passing through Provo on the way to Zion from Midway and randomly found Communal. I checked out the menu and was instantly attracted to the sourdough skillet. Thank goodness that skillet drew us in because everything here was AMAZING! Asher was so cordial, really knowledgeable about the menu, so polite, and bright eyed; we really appreciated and loved his energy. The building appears to be historic (wooden floors), the space is small, quaint, and elegant but not formal, and the bathrooms are tiny and cute with washable/reusable hand towels :) We started with the citrus salad and the ratio of orange/blood orange to ricotta to arugula was perfect! Hefty on the toppings and not on the filler (arugula). The balsamic was not too tangy either. The sourdough pancake was crispy around the edges and soft and squishy in the center. The miso butter added the perfect umami to the sweetness of the pears. Mmmmmmmm mmmmmmm!!!! The bison patty melt was cooked medium rare according to chefs recommendation and it was delectable!!! The pastrami was not too spiced or salty, the Gruyère was just sharp enough, and the onions added a sweet flare. I saw others raving about the butterscotch pudding so I asked about it and Asher said it's a dinner menu item but they were willing to accommodate our request (woo hoo!). The butterscotch flavor was mild and the pudding was not gelatinous. My favorite part was the soggy Oreos on the bottom with the caramel flavor (I'm weird, I know). This place has been on my list of places to try whenever we came into town. Pricey for Provo, Utah. The food was good, although we didn't think it met the raves in the reviews. We were a group of four and ordered Chicken, steak, fingerling potatoes, carrots and asparagus. We finished the meal with the butterscotch pudding. The server told us this was their signature dessert. The vegetables were good. We particularly loved the carrots. The chicken was difficult to share. I would suggest that this would be cut again for easier communal eating. The flank steak was tough to eat. That was disappointing. What was so annoying was another server. We had just finished our meal and signed the credit card slips. A woman came in and asked if there was a table as she had no reservation. He stood right by our table, we were by the front door, and told her looking at us to give him 15 minutes. They should be gone by then. We literally had just finished signing the credit card slip. Heard so many good things about this place from foodie friends and it did not disappoint! This is a true farm-to-table dining experience! Loved the ambiance: small, exclusive, quaint, and just lovely. We were warmly greeted by the host, and seated at the best table there was (we did have reservations on a Saturday night). Our server was personable and just really down to earth, heard his recommendations and they were spot on. Ordered the meat and cheese platter for starters. The steak was probably one of the best steaks we've had in a while. The trout dish was lovely - slight crisp on the skin side and soft and flaky on the top. Normally I do not like to consume fish skin, but it was slightly crispy and had so much flavor that I did not mind it and cleaned the plate! This place is probably the best restaurants in Provo in this price range. We started off with the Smoked Salmon Panzanella and Citrus Salad--honestly such a great pairing to eat back to back. For the mains, we got the Fluffy Egg Madam and the Bison Patty Melt. I started first with trying the Patty Melt--wow, it was so delicious! I loved the rye bread they used! I found myself in Utah county at lunchtime on a Saturday for a change and remembered this gem of a restaurant. It's a beautiful sunny space in a classic building. Kai was such a delightful presence and you should see their excitement about spam for breakfast! I couldn't agree more, because that's what I ordered. We just finished a sweaty hike, so the salty kimchi, spam and cucumber hit the spot. My friend got chilaquiles which were divine. We left feeling satisfied but not bursting at the seams. I'll need to find a reason to come back for dinner. My only gripe was the absence of drinks on the brunch menu. Even if not offering boozy options, the food is far too elevated for the casual "Pepsi products" reference. I'm just sad it took me so long to try this place. Everything is so elegant here, from the ambiance to the food, absolutely remarkable. When we arrived a few minutes early of our 5 pm reservation, we walked in on the entire staff all eating together, it was seriously the sweetest thing I've ever encountered at a restaurant. What a warm welcome. The free little bread rolls with soft creamy butter was the perfect start of the meal. The Brussels sprouts are amazing with that confit garlic aioli, and the pomegranate molasses gave it the perfect sweetness. Spring lake trout, so buttery soft and flakey, delish. The roasted organic chicken was so tender, perfectly cooked with so much flavor. Barley risotto with mushrooms, excellent. Roasted cauliflower with romesco sauce was incredible. Maple roasted squash, I die, this was so flavorful and scrumptious, we loved it! Roasted sweet potato- so good with the candied pecans Harissa roasted carrots- oh my goodness, so good with the tahini, roasted perfectly. ..and for dessert, the butterscotch pudding, yes, worth it! Went there for an anniversary lunch. The reviews were high and it didn't disappoint. Hubby had the hamburger, I had the shrimp and polenta. Both were excellent. I always appreciate a restaurant serving what I can't cook at home, and I love to cook. We also had the shishito appetizer. The hamburger patty itself had a lot of flavor. We came here for our Valentines date (we celebrated early to avoid the crowds), and we loved every minute! They seated us with a beautiful view of the Provo City Center temple. Make sure to make a reservation for a table on weekend nights--it gets busy! The homemade rolls tasted TRULY homemade, the charcuterie was a great way to start the meal, the roasted chicken was perfectly cooked and flavorful, the garlic mashed potatoes were creamy and delicious, and the maple roasted squash tasted and looked honestly Master-Chef-level-good. I tried communal for the first time today for brunch. I loved the cute little restaurant that reminded me of a friends kitchen. There weren't very many tables and there were a lot of little tables scrunched together in the middle of the restaurant. The service was good and the waitress was friendly. I just drank water but wished it had ice. I ordered the breakfast tostada that came with eggs, beans, salsa and crema on crunchy tortillas. I enjoyed my meal but wished wanted some hot sauce for it to add more flavor. I also tried the chorizo biscuits and gravy and the biscuit was as big as the plate. I wished there was more chorizo in the dish because it was mostly biscuit. It also needed some salt. There were many things on the menu I will have to come back and try and I would like to try the dinner menu as well. read more

It had been quire a while since being here. It's always been good, but missing that something that caused me to come here over other similar places -- even if I had to drive longer to get to them. What they were missing was Adam. We've been here twice in the last month, and they haven't missed a step. The food perfectly cooked and excellent service. We've been recognized by our servers both times from other restaurants they have been at. When the biggest nit I can find is that I think it's stupid to put pot de creme in a mason jar for dessert, that's pretty small. read more

But wait for it, my son found the sauce good for dipping his chicken. 4 stars! #honeygarlic roasted chicken. Mixed feedback from my family. Not mine since I don't eat meat. My son likes dark meat and found it tender enough. My husband likes the white meat and he found it had over cooked and chewy. Cooking a whole chicken is challenging but my husband has a fool proof beer can chicken recipe that he swears by. So like between 3.5 and 4. #homemaderolls were pretty good. Chewy with a crunchy crust. Too large for our appetite. 4 stars #butterscotchpudding was so-so. Overall glad we chose @communalrestaurant in Provo fir our big dinner.
