Kona reef in Phoenix has proven to have the most sincere and knowledgeable staff in the valley - the team truly cares for the fish they are selling, Walter and Ben in particular have really helped me choose the right fish and corals and avoid making major errors. Even when I've ventured out and made rash decisions, they have helped to find ways to correct them. The fish are all coppered to be sure that parasites are minimized, really showing how Kona cares for their clients. The store is super super cool and the staff is very nice but I am super disappointed and will not be purchasing Betta fish here again. I've purchased two bettas here, the first one died within a month. (He had a 5 gallon tank, heater, filter, live plants, etc). The second betta I purchased here has trouble opening his mouth and struggles to eat I believe he has a growth and that is the problem. (I noticed this problem the day after I got him, and he too is in a great tank with everything he needs) read more

I stopped by today with my wife and one of my kids. This Tropical Fish store is hands down awesome! I purchased some coral frags for myself and some freshwater fish for my kids on our visit and I'm very impressed with the quality, cleanliness, customer service & prices. Even though they are in North Scottsdale they don't have the sometimes snotty attitude that other stores have. This is know one of my stops when shopping for my tanks. Absolutely impressed not only with there setup, but also by the use of technology around the store and an app coming soon to shop ahead of time for guys like me that have to drive for quality all the way around. Stopped by Kona just to check them out. The shop was very nice and clean. The staff was friendly and they had great looking coral with different price points. I saw some unique fish and everything looked well cared for and healthy. I thought they would be a little more expensive being in Scottsdale, but they weren't. I wound up getting a really nice Golden Blenny and its doing great 4 months later. read more

LOVE THIS PLACE, All different varieties of fish drive a long way for this place and the staff knows a lot about fish unlike pet smart. The fish are all perfectly healthy and are beautiful and as natural as you can get fish! Highly recommend this place for new fish owners as they will give you advice for lots of different subjects you might want to know. They sell salt water and fresh water fish I always go to get freshwater fish but spend more time looking at the saltwater fish as they sell coral and stuff you will see in finding Nemo! I just drove 30 minutes to get to this place I was going to buy three shrimp one catfish and two of these shiny blue tetra I think they're called about one inch long fish. It took me about 20 minutes to make all my choices. The tanks largely do not have any signs or prices. I flagged down one of the youngsters that is running the store he tells me nope I cannot have the shiny blue tetra fish because it's a show tank. I asked for the manager another youngster appears tells me that in fact I cannot have those two small shiny fish because if he tries to catch them it will destroy his show tank. I asked him to please just give it a try he gets a large net much too big for the job and quickly splashes it into the water of course scaring all the fish. Then he says see I can't catch it. I asked him to let me try and he refuses. I asked him to try again this time slowly and gently but he refuses. He lets me walk out of the store losing the sale. and I was planning to buy a large fish tank in the future there's just no telling how much money this business just lost because of these clueless youngsters. At the very least you guys should put a sign on the tank that says "show tank - not for sale" or better yet learn some customer service. Those were not rare fish and the guy even said he was getting more next week why are you letting a customer get upset over nothing. Luckily you're not the only aquarium store in town. read more

If any aquarium store in Phoenix deserves 5 stars, its this place. This place knows what they're doing. Take it from someone who worked at one of the largest aquarium stores in the country while in high school and has kept literally hundreds of fish. Store is clean, great selection of corals, tech savvy prices on tablets. The employees are all VERY well versed and know their stuff. The display tanks hold things I've never seen in 30+ years in the aquarium hobby. Ribbon eel anyone? Sharks, eels....you name it. The only small quip is their saltwater fish selection could be a little better/more diverse. Other than that, just an elite level well done store. Make the drive and pay them a visit! read more

I visited the shea location today with my two year old son. I spoke with Beck for no less than 20 minutes. I had every question answered patiently and even questions I didn't know I had were answered. Super friendly and knowledgeable! This person explained everything to me whilst my two year old was curiously checking out every single item in the store :/ All with a smile and warm and friendly attitude. they had a great selection of saltwater fish and there tanks were super clean and well taken care of however what really brought this place down for me was the fact that a 15 gallon tank with just a filter was 189 dollars, that's absolutely ridiculous pricing as i bought a 125 gallon fish tank for $400. the store itself was very clean pricing was high though. I have gone to all the fish stores in the valley and this one is great!! The tanks are spotless, the staff is knowledgeable about the fish and their selection of fish, corals and plants is just fantastic! The only thing I didn't care for is i check my water every time i add a fish to make sure things are still ok and they charge to test your water when every other store does it for free. So get your water tested somewhere else and then come check this place out. read more

Best fish store in az hands down! Some of the most beautiful corals in the valley, priced very fairly. Healthy selection of fish both freshwater and saltwater. Very unique specimens including Hawaiian dragon eel, rare cichlids, fancy ornamental freshwater shrimps, and even a shark and a ray! Was very impressed by the team as well. Have visited multiple times, Mickie and Ben were some of the most knowledgeable staff I've encountered so far. This store is quite clearly focused on saltwater fish. The tanks are something to look at, with gorgeous coral and unusual fish and invertebrates. That said, they really need to rethink if they want to continue investing in freshwater fish if they don't have the variety or staff knowledge to sell them properly. Please read the 1-2 star reviews on Google for the bigger picture, especially if you have a freshwater aquarium. Since the Phx. location is in my neighborhood I've visited frequently, and sadly I've experienced all of the problems others have reported. The freshwater section has a very small and disappointing selection, and only one (former) employee seemed to know anything about these fish. (I waited for at least 15 minutes for her to assist me; the other employees told me she alone could take care of me, as she was the only one who knew about freshwater livestock.) I've popped in several times since then, hoping against hope that more interesting breeds would show up, but the customer service dropped from poor to nonexistent. Each of the four times I walked in, not one employee offered to help or even acknowledged I was there, despite hanging around the store for 10 minutes or so and there being no more than one or two other customers in the store (it's a very small place, so it's not like they couldn't see me). I did buy several fish last year from the "freshwater specialist", but she wouldn't sell me my first choice, a few of the harlequin rasboras in the "display tank," because she insisted the manager would "kill her" if she took any fish from there (?!!). I was never given a good reason for this, so I'm left to think the appearance of the display tanks is more important than making a profit, or having a happy customer? I did settle for some other fish, but four of the five tiger barbs died within three weeks, as did the pair of clown loaches. I also suspect my current trumpet snail infestation started there, as their tanks are all full of them.... Kona Reef is a world apart from Aquarium Arts in Mesa and Tropical Treasures in Glendale, where the staff members are enthusiastic about fish and extremely helpful, the freshwater fish selections are so much larger and more impressive, and their fish are healthier. read more

Just went to the grand reopening on 32nd st. and Shea....amazing best fish store in Az.

Stumbled upon this store with my fiancé so we decided to check it out because we love sea life. However we also just got done driving around and taking pictures so we had all of our camera equipment with us. We walked in the store and immediately was stopped by one of the ladies who works there and she asked me to leave my backpack (Which is carrying thousands of dollars worth of camera equipment in it) in a cubby near the door that literally everyone had access to. Wasn't going to leave it in my car either and take that chance. Now I get people frown on backpacks in today's world but if you're going to tell me to leave my bag I think you need to tell everyone to leave their bags including a purse. Moral of the story is I wasn't allowed to look at anything because I had my backpack with me. read more

We spent tens of thousands of dollars in the store when it comes to the service it leaves something to be desired. Because I put their reviews on yelp they refuse to sell us the fish food that we wanted. They asked us to leave the store. They have a large selection of livestock but there's plenty of other salt water stores available in Phoenix. It's a shame when you turn someone down that just Needed fish food and we're told to leave the store because of the one star review and yelp. Good luck read more

I'd like to start this off by saying I was super excited to receive this fish I was getting from Kona Reef on Shea. I did my research and made to have a stable tank to quarantine my three discus I received ( which cost a hefty some of money ) . I called them and mentioned that one of the discus I got was not eating and wasn't acting like the other two but they told me to just give the fish time and to do a small water change that the fish was probably stressed . That discus were finicky and that I was just overthinking . After coming home today from a long shift , I do my routine and check all my tanks and immediately realize the discus I was worried about that wasn't eating appeared to be dead . I was mortified, I called and asked for anything I could do and was told to just wait it out . After realizing that my fish had passed I tested my tank with all levels reading good with nitrates just under 10 ppm . I called Kona reef to see if I'd be able to bring in the fish with water to see if they would be willing to give me store credit back because I knew it must have just been this one fish , and they absolutely refused to do any sort of store credit ! I wasn't even asking for my money back! Super super super upset with this and will not be coming back ! read more

I give it one star because I cannot give it any less. Since Dave sold this business to these people, we have had nothing but issues. We spent $140 on fish and all but one died. They are uncooperative and do not work with you. They DEFINITELY do not stand behind their product or service. We were told they give no guarantees on their fish. My husband spent $25 on wood for our tank. He was told to soak it in a bucket of water before adding it to the fish tank so the tannins can seep out. He did this for a week, changed the water daily and the wood smelled like feces! We were not about to place it in our tank. When he called they would not work with him. He told them he followed their directions and why would we ever want to put that piece of wood in our tank. Basically we were told too bad, so sad. "Once the wood hits water it cannot be returned". DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE. We are going elsewhere, at least PetsMart stands behind their product. We finally set-up our 150 gallon Salt tank after it was empty for 2 years. We went to Kona Reef to get some Chromis starter fish. They survived fine over the next 4 weeks we went back every week to buy more fish and live corals. The staff steered us to fish that would get along and not to what they wanted to sell us. The store isn't the least expensive but has a great selection of fish and supplies. On the other hand their tanks are super clean and after adding 15 fish and 3 corals I'm happy to report all are alive and well. The corals are growing nicely even without expensive lighting. I have bought fish from other stores and have always lost 1-2 fish over the next few weeks. The staff is super friendly and very knowledgeable. It's a great place for all your Reef and aquarium needs. The only thing I wish they had was a quick way to check prices for the fish. Using a tablet to look up the prices is very Tech, but cumbersome and slow. read more

The customer service was the worst. We went to them for help to set up a new salt water tank. They sold us too many fish to start with and did not provide us good information. The fish died. This store has freshwater, saltwater and reef. They keep it very clean and have many hard to find things. I went there for corals. They have from frags at only a few dollars to the highest end collector pieces (a few as big as my head). It is one of the better SPS and LPS selections in the state. I picked up a few nice Australian pieces and some frags. I felt the prices were very good. The girl that works there is very knowledgeable and helpful. I will return. The lighting in the tanks was good too. They use enough white light. Many of the stores now use so much blue you have no idea how it will look in your tank. The pieces were obviously hand selected and not the "bulk" pieces you see elsewhere. Do yourself a favor and come here. read more

Found this place through one of the coupon mailers and noticed they had saltwater supplies and some fish. Decided to check it out and it was awesome!! Nice selection of frags and great prices.
