We just started a new salt water tank and we were so happy to see a store so close to us. Hunter, Isaiah and Gus are always so helpful when we go in and have answered every question we've asked them (and there have been a LOT). They helped us when our tang got worms and have been helping us maintain our tank since day one. They're probably the reason our tank is doing so well! The store has a great selection of fish and coral and their store tanks are always fun to look at too. I would highly recommend this location to anyone with a saltwater tank and definitely to beginners wanting to start a saltwater tank. read more

Kona Reef is the best when it comes to service and quality. I won't go anywhere else for livestock, assistance, or advice. My wife and I had left the hobby due to the heavy time commitment required to clean the tank and perform water changes, tests, etc. Kona serves the service on the tank, allowing us to enjoy the beauty and tranquility inherent to the reef tank. My family has been going to this store for 5 years and we supported it thru the pandemic. We used to love this store. But something has changed. We used to see the owners in the store and could chat with the knowledgeable staff. That is no longer true. My family recently had a very unpleasant experience with the store where we were flat out lied to about a very minor purchase. After having spent thousands of dollars supporting a store that we loved, this was hard to swallow. We like to support our LFS and do our best to support local business owners, but dishonesty shouldn't be tolerated. I'm sorry to say that we can no longer shop at Kona Reef. read more

I have been buying coral here for years. But recently had a very bad experience. I went to the Shea store and noticed an acrylic lid on a new Red Sea 250 tank. It was a custom lid that was apparently returned previously. I told the sales person (young gentleman with beard) that I was interested in purchasing but wasn't sure that it would fit my tank. He called his manager to verify price and than told me that I could return it if it didn't fit.....so I bought it along with an assortment of fishes and corals. Unfortunately, the lid did not fit my Red Sea 250 because the opening for the light mounts were too small. I returned to the store today to return it. The original salesperson was there, and could verify what I was promised, but another salesperson had to contact their manager by phone, who refused to allow the return despite the previous promise. The salesperson then told me that it was ok that they lied to me about it being returnable because "you got a good deal."........On a lid that doesn't fit. That flippant remark really showed me the character of the people running the store. The lid was probably hard to sell since it's such a specialty item, so they blatantly lied to make a sale. I had a long established purchase history with this store and was going to buy more corals today to off set the cost of the return, but being lied to like that really make it impossible to buy anything more from them. Oh one other thing, I used to buy RODI water from them but stopped because my TDS meters kept showing high readings with their water (20-30). I figured it was just bad resin batch but after this experience perhaps it's just another example of dishonesty. read more

We were on the hunt for new fish and found exactly what we needed here. We have been to the Kona Reef in Surprise a few times and wanted to see what this location had. We had a guy that was super helpful to us and educated us on other fish that would work well with our goldfish. We got 2 clown loaches and a fantail goldfish. They are definitely knowledgeable and take great care of their tanks and fish. We will be back soon to add to our tank! read more

Visited the Kona Reef on 32nd street and Shea blvd for the first time. The atmosphere was pleasant and the store was very clean. They had a large selection of healthy tropical fish. Prices were pretty normal compared to other shops. I'm happy that I found a really nice fish store that I can visit. read more

1. They sold me RO/DI water and it tested at 1600+ TDS. I wouldn't buy water here if you want to keep your tank healthy. 2. Manager told me "sorry we must have used the saltwater tubes to fill RO/DI vats... that's inexcusable. 3. Covid must be cured at Kona Reef. My four-year old niece realllllllly wanted to go to the big aquarium today, but this auntie is on a bit of a tight budget.... as I was frantically searching for other options, this neighborhood fish store popped up. I felt a smidge bad knowing I wasn't going to buy anything, and was even tempted to pity buy a goldfish just to not be an inconvenience. But the way her eyes lit up as we explored the store was unforgettable. We were welcomed by several staff members and one of the guys was even kind enough to point out a couple of fishies she might have recognized (dori and Nemo)! I didn't want to take up too much of anyone's time as there were a few other patrons in the store, we tried to be very respectful of everyone and the tanks and only stayed long enough to walk around twice. But during that time you could tell this is a great place, very clean and with very helpful staff. Honestly, I would pay to bring back my other nieces and nephews to have a little tour and be taught a few things about aquariums. If I had a big enough place of my own I would for sure come back here, there were so many fish, so many fun plants and tank decor, it truly was a wonderful experience. This is the best fish store ever! I always go in when I am in the valley. They always box up my fish and coral for travel. I am able to take them back home in Pinetop. The only other way we can buy fish is to have them shipped. Kona Reef saves us hundreds of dollars yearly. Last time I was in Hunter was super helpful! Great fish store, all the employees really know what they are talking about and they are super trustworthy and knowable with the Reef industry standards! Beautiful fish and corals all over the shop. Most of the time I feel like the employees purposely avoids helping me out whenever I come. I came three separate occasions looking for amano shrimps and never in stock. The last time I came, I called a day ahead to ask if they have the amano in stock, they told me they just got some packages in that day and should have some for sale the next day. It has a great look and feel, the fish and coral are all displayed beautifully and the folks that work here know their fish stuff in spite of the fact that they all look like they are still in high school... yes, I am jealous of that. The real secret to this place is their home service. I just began my service with them earlIer this week and to say that I am impressed would be a HUGE understatement. Parker is my service guy and what an amazing job he did getting me all set. I actually had to go to the shop to grab a couple of things that I didn't even know I needed, Parker and Trevor communicated exactly what I needed, had it for me when I got there and when I got back home Parker had completed the service, had a few tips for me and help me medicate the tank. I WAS a returning customer for months at this store. I bought a Congo tetra and most stores will give you a return policy for possible sick fish. Well i got my tetra 4-5 days ago and today i woke up to it dead. So i call to see about the return policy they promised us and then told us they wouldn't even give store credit. I have been keeping freshwater fish and dreaming about setting up my own saltwater fish tank since 2012. I've been to nearly every local fish store in the Valley and this one really does have it all. Gorgeous and green freshwater plants, vibrant, huge coral frags, and a healthy and fat livestock selection. I only ended up buying a little bit of Java moss and a fancy new HOB filter with integrated UV sterilization, but after such a great first impression I'll be going back for any future desires. read more

The New Shop is absolutely beautiful - the layout, tanks, fit & finish is by far the best in the valley hands down... The inventory is usually pretty good and the quality/health of the live stock is good. *The only thing I'd like to see is the prices to come down 10-15% to make them within reason of other shops around the valley. Went here for some fish and plants, first time. All the employees were pleasant and helpful, but not pushy or anything. Quite knowledgable too. They were pretty well stocked, all their fish looked healthy and vibrant. I ended up getting a Panda algae eater, an African Dwarf Frog, and a few shrimp. And their plant selection is great, lots to choose from. Friendly staff, healthy stock, and everyone wore masks during COVID. She helped us with making the right decisions for our saltwater fish tank. We told her we a have a bit of a drive home so she packed our fish in a special box. The fish are great. Great service and they care. We have visited several other fish places in the Phoenix area and Kona Reef was top notch. They are very prompt about returning your call. Starting a 32 Biocube saltwater Display Tank. Had saltwater in past as well as freshwater. I am starting anew slow and steady. Went to Kona in Surprise several times so far. Yep, my kind of help . . steady, knowledgeable, friendly, personable. Good advise, patient, and good selection of frags and larger corals. Living in Goodyear and having the 303 makes it quickly accessible. All frags are doing very well. Fish are also. Going back next week, again because it is a good feel place. read more

The employees here are really friendly and helpful. They have a good selection of fairly inexpensive coral (around $35 for a frag). They also have both freshwater and salt water fish. The reason for 4 and not 5 stars is because the variety of fish was limited and the prices are not labeled directly on the tanks. The prices are on iPads throughout the store, and I had difficulty using their iPad for pricing since it involves going through a website that was not very user friendly. Overall I would come back and purchase their freshwater tinfoil barbs, or saltwater clownfish, and/or blue tang. I would recommend this store to others looking for live coral because they have some of the nicest coral I've seen for a decent price. read more

Their prices are very competitive, sometimes even less than their competitors (including big box stores). The staff is both knowledgeable and friendly, as well as attentive. Their (freshwater) fish selection is pretty good and they make sure the tanks are well kept. I have been shopping at their Shea Blvd store in North PHX. I can not come up with any negative comments even if I tried. Mickey, Parker, Tyler, and the other guy (can't remember his name) have been valuable and patient in helping me. They are constantly taking care of the fish tanks. I also did a quick visit to the store in Surprise. It was impressive and the staff was just as helpful! I have read the 1 star reviews here and find them baseless. This store is just the right size. Bigger isn't always better. Please, keep up the good work! read more
