We've been here twice now. First time we stopped in and traded in some old aquarium decorations for credit towards stuff in store. We got 2 angel fish in exchange for our decorations. We have a community tank and the angels we got ended up being a breeding pair and causing some issue in the breeding tank, so after about 3 months of having them we brought them back to discount and traded them for store credit towards different fish. We got a Cory, some snails, and a large tank to upgrade. They're super friendly and fair in trade ins. read more

Everything was used and they didn't have much inventory that first day I visited but now it's becoming one of my favorite stores. Staff is super friendly. I always go in with my dog and nobody hassled us. Super friendly staff. You can get really great deals if you get lucky. Think of it as a thrift shop for aquarium hobbyists. My husband and I have been going to this establishment for years. It was one of the best places to go for fish supplies and fish. We also donated some of our larger fish to the store once they outgrew our aquariums. Today was the worst experience we have ever had because of a new representative with horrible customer service. My husband went in for sand and when he was talking about how high the prices were now the representative proceeded to antagonize him, following him around the store saying he was trying to intimidate someone and proceeded to tell him to leave and not come back the store. I cannot believe this type of treatment came from anyone who works in the store because everyone was always so nice, accommodating, and the best customer service. The representative my husband was approached by was a male Caucasian, red hair, approximately 5'7, and would not give his name. I will also post my husband's experience on google and social media to warn others customers the horrible customer service my husband received from this representative. Also, my husband gave the representative his name and there was a witness who said the store clerk was totally out of line. read more

We made the drive over here from Peoria specifically to check this store out. Super disappointed in the lack of care for their freshwater fish. While they have a pretty big selection of used and new tanks, stands, lights and other care items that's only half of what makes a good fish store. Pretty much all their freshwater tanks were filled with fish that had severe ich. There were a lot of dead fish that have been in the tanks for days. Legit should be cleaned out if they're watching over their tanks daily. Not sure how they would be missed considering it was all their tanks not just one. We had came across town to buy some fish and plants but I hope they use this review to take better care. I get it, it's a business however, they're also living creatures that need great care in order for people to buy them. Hopefully, things improve and we can come back in the future and spend some money but right now is not the time. read more

Ordered a tank from another shop last November. After waiting 2 weeks for it to arrive I cancelled the order and came to Discount Aquarium. Eli was very helpful and helped me piece together a complete setup for less then 1/2 what I was going to pay for the tank alone. He was so helpful I hired him to service and maintain my system. Six months later, I'm back buying a bigger system. Again, Eli is there to help, now have a 90 gallon with sump and beautiful setup. It's not all about the dollar there. Usually I'm getting used equipment, but once in a while the recommendation is something new. Excellent balance and I don't feel I'm getting screwed. read more

They lied to me for over a month with regards to coming out and finalizing my installation and during my last call their service guy Dave just hung up on me, real mature and a total dick move. Needless to say but I will anyway, I will never darken their door again. Bunch of low end knuckleheads that could have had a customer for life but couldn't pull it together at the most basic level. So, you might be able to get passed the fact that the place looks like a bomb hit it but don't be fooled, these guys don't give a rats ass about you! I came in here a week ago and was very disappointed. I had high hopes that they would have a decent stock of new and used aquariums to start a nano tank. The used equipment they do sell was a mess. Several damaged and unclean tanks. They had some new equipment but not a large inventory. Place is disorganized with stuff everywhere. I am pretty excited about Discount Aquarium. I researched all the places in town, stopped by a few and was sold by this one. It's your usual maze of equipment and tanks that I expect from a good hobby store with an owner that loves his job. I bought my first saltwater tank there this weekend after years of research. It was one that Chris (the owner) had set up in store already- a 24 gallon nano cube with love sand and rock already in it. I bought the tank, light, sand, rock, water, and the stand for it for... $195. I felt like I was robbing the place I was so excited. No place else has up and running tanks like this! So I took it home, water and all, let it run and just added my first fish once it settled. It's been going at his shop and already cycled so bonus was I didn't have to wait the long period to get all the bacteria and level correct. He also had exactly the fish I wanted in stock- a pair of specialty clowns (snowflake pair for me), a tiger pistol shrimp and watchman goby already paired up, and eventually I'll be adding a fairy wrasse. Oh and cleaner crew of three snails and three hermits :) He was helpful, gave my pistol shrimp some "rubble" to build with at no cost, helped me get a protein skimmer and food all set. He really makes it an easy set up process and NO ONE beats his prices!!! read more

They did have decent prices and many things to choose from. However, the store is very cluttered and hard to navigate. There were also quite a few noticeably sick fish that were for sale. We were greeted, but not offered any help while we were browsing with several employees pushing past us. I may be back for supplies, but I will not ever purchase live fish here. read more

Every time I go into this store, I get exceptional advice and great stuff at a good price! I started bare-bones with used tank products from their store - which saved me a lot of money NOT going brand new at a national retailer and starting with new products - that would just become used once I got them home. All the fish I bought a year ago are still thriving and some have grown more than I thought possible. They told me how to treat my tank and feed my fish and they had everything in a one-stop shop.
