Bought 7 neon tetras and added them to my 40 gallon tank with 3 existing ones, 6 have died in less than a week. I have a healthy colony of shrimp in the same tank and it is very heavily planted so water quality is not an issue. I also bought 15 brilliant rasporas from ocean floor right before going to tropical treasure so those transported longer than the tetras but I haven't lost a single one. I was warned not to buy from tropical treasure from experienced friends but their tetras were half the price of other stores so I gave it a shot. Do not buy fish from here, I can't comment on their reptiles. read more

I just want to say that the two men who worked here are absolutely amazing. I brought my very precocious 6 year old son with me today to get supplies for his new bearded dragon we are getting him. Not only did they go above and beyond to help me get the right set up, but they were so informative. I also want to say that they treated my son exceptionally well. They were so kind to him. They showed him some tortoise babies and the dart frogs. One of them sat and patiently chatted with my son about fish, Minecraft, lizards etc. while he cleaned the tanks. They answered his many questions and it really meant a lot to my son. They made such an impression on him and I'm so grateful for their kindness and enthusiasm. We spent almost 2 hours here. My son left the store so happy and excited and told me "Mom! We NEED to come back here soon! That was so fun!" He is very interested in animals and reptiles and he definitely found his people here. Rats are kept in crowded drawers with limited airflow, leading many of them to have respiratory disease. Even if you are buying them as feeders, I wouldn't want to feed sick rats to my snakes. That being said, the animals that are being sold as pets aren't kept much better. Adult bearded dragons should never be housed together, as they can be aggressive and it's not worth the risk. Even the babies don't seem to fare well together, as you can several have missing limbs. The fish are displaying signs of ick, leading me to doubt they're being quarantined before sale. Customers rely on places like these to exemplify the proper care of exotics. The example this store is setting will only lead to more poorly kept and diseased creatures. read more

We had waited 4 months to get our Axolotl due to tank cycling. Once it was ready to buy one, I had spoken to a few people that sold them, but knowing how delicate this animal was, I kept looking till I found a place I really wanted to buy from, which ended up being Tropical Treasures. I spoke to Jennifer. She was so knowledgeable and patient with me! I couldn't have asked for more. It was an hour away and SO worth the drive. My new pet is very healthy and she even has helped me with questions I've had after getting my little guy. Tons of reptiles and neat animals they have! I originally came to tropical treasures and of an axolotl for me and my four-year-old daughter. we were held by a wonderful lady named Jen and have been back several times and have built our 28 gallon tank with our five month old axolotl they have everything from plants food and pets. We needed a pleco and a couple other things and decided to stop into Tropical Treasures. It's located off 35th and greenway in a smaller run down strip mall. It's nothing fancy but their fish look well taken care of and a pretty big selection of fish. It was pretty busy in there but we were able to get help and grabbed a few fish. We got rummy-nose tetras, a long fin pleco and a couple corydora catfish. The girl that helped us was nice and helpful. Definitely prefer to get our fish from local smaller fish stores. Not a petsmart or petco as we feel they don't take as great care of their fishes. Definitely give this place a try if you're looking for reasonable prices and a place that takes care of their stock. Workers for the most part are very nice. That is the only good I can say about this store. I have been here a few times over the last several years hoping to see some improvement, of which I have seen little. To start, the feeder rats from here are kept in disgusting conditions. If you look in the back room, you can see what is max a 75 gallon glass fish tank completely filled with rats. If you know anything about rat husbandry you know why this is wrong. Regardless, they have literally no room to move and are packed in there, along with all of their poop and urine. If you ask the owner about these conditions he will tell you they are "just feeders" and aren't supposed to live long anyways so it shouldn't matter. This is unacceptable and appalling. I did purchase a rat from her for my Burm, but it looked so sickly I couldn't feed it to her. It died regardless a few days later. The fish here are kept in hardly any better conditions. They're all crammed in the tanks, and sold whether they have ick or not. I can't confirm but I don't believe they quarantine them before putting them out for sale. I can't say much else on the condition of the fish as this isn't my expertise, but just looking at them you can tell they aren't healthy. As far as the reptiles go, it's the same conditions as every other animal in the store. Cramped, dirty living quarters. I've seen them put two adult beardies in a cage that looks to be maybe 20 gallons max. Ball pythons crowded in together, sulfates crowded together. You name it, it's smushed into these little cages. Most of these animals shouldn't even be with "roommates," let alone squeezing them in these little enclosures. Overall the store is cramped no matter where you look, the aisles, the tanks, the back room. Everywhere. Everything is dirty and dusty. The cherry on top was the sewer roach running across the floor on my last visit (not an escaped feeder). I hate to leave such a poor review on a small business, but I cannot imagine why this place is still running. Everything in that store is cruel and abusive, these animals are treated as products in a shelf and nothing more. I hope they do better in the future, but I've given it three chances and will not be returning. It is shocking to me that this place has almost a four star rating despite these conditions. read more

You know that feeling you get when you are nervous and anxious to be somewhere, and you think someone is making your day by waving to you and there turns out to be someone behind you that they were waving too instead? Yeah, me either... I discovered this place when I was searching for algae eaters and pond fish online. The website showed the basics and did not have frills. I called them (to verify their hours since the pandemic has changed everything) and reached a friendly voice message. I left a message and received a return voice message from Don verifying their hours, location, etc. They are located off 35th Ave and Greenway, but of course Greenway is plagued with construction. I found the location and wondered to myself how long it has been there as I recall getting soda and smokes nearby. You cannot miss the place because there are aquariums at the outside entrance. It is pretty crowded inside, but you can still find everything and then some. I think pufferfish were the first fish I saw when I got inside and then I saw a gazillion other fish and reptiles. I took a lap or three before I thought I was acknowledged, but I think they were signaling the other patron. I even had the time to call my significant other and talk about the plecos I thought we might get before I accepted defeat and walked out without any fish, reptile swag, or plants. I may try going back with my significant other, but I might not since he would walk out like I did if he encountered the same experience. read more

Wish I could give this store zero stars after going into it u should be able to witness for your self the owner or whoever keeps responding to reviews on here "Don" does not seem to even fully care about the bad reviews on this place. When entering this store you will see very large lizards in very small containers some lizards I have seen malnourished and some even have sings of MBD (dying limbs due to lack of nutrition), there are dead fish in open tanks children could put there hands in and dead fish in most tanks they just leave them in there and let the dead fish contaminate the tank and other fish, and I would also not even recommend going to this store for feeder mice my family friend lost his snake due to the diseased feeder mice they are selling here the necropsy done on the snake revealed that it died because of the diseased feeder mice sold here and my brother bought fish from here witch where sick and all died quite suddenly. I, my self did not know about this and called the place about PET rats the lady said yes that sell "DOMESTICATED PET RATS" when I went I buy them I was given feeder rats who where in fact diseased and died within the week with yellow goo presiding from both there nose and anus when I called in asking why they told me they sold domesticated pet rats and sold me diseased feeder rats the lady told me "it's not there fault and I should've done my research" and cussed me out I would not recommend this store for absolutely anything and I would not give it your business the so called "experts" Don says takes care of there lizards and animals are a bunch of old tattooed rude employees who will not take responsibility and will you curse words with you I have seen multiple people complaining about this store such as an employee using feeding tongs and a kid to get an iguana out of its cage horrifying the customer and traumatizing and even inviting the lizard there are no experts just a bunch of incapable idiots running a store full of miserable animals do everyone a favor and report this place to the Arizona humane society. read more

wish i could put zero stars. This is going to be a long review, but please read. First i'd like to say this place is very dirty and not sanitary at all, i'm talking like dead fish in open tanks where kids can put their hands in and mess around with. Very small tanks for large lizards, anyways, me and my boyfriend called in to buy rats after doing some research, the lady asked us what animal we were feeding but we said oh no we are looking to buy PET rats. She then goes ah yes pet rats we have those come in !!! we got 2 small rats, Grim and Bones. Not even a week later, Grim is dead. so we go and buy the one that is still alive, Bones, another friend so he's not lonely. 3 days later, today, Bones dies a slow and painful death with discharge coming out of his nose and poop leaking out of him. We are very disappointed and mainly sad because we were told these are domesticated pet rats, but then we are lead to the back where there are hundreds of rats shoved in tiny cramped drawers. Honestly, that should have been the first red flag. I now understand we were probably sold feeders, but we are pissed off because we were told they were domesticated pet rats. My boyfriend took the new one we bought to accompany Bones back right after Bones died because he did not want to watch the new rat die when we already had to watch our new pets who we got so instantly attached to die very painfully. I also called earlier and told the lady I wish she warned us or something but she was just completely rude and disrespectful saying "it's not our fault you bought feeders as pets" girl you told us these were domesticated rats meant to be pets.... We wish we would of gotten a warning or something that these rats were prone to disease but no we got nothing shame on this place do better. read more

First walking in, it feels like you are entering a store for mythical creatures from Harry Potter or something. Friendly staff, who are very helpful. I walked out with a few guppies and a snail. And the guppies are interestingly enough less shy and more socialized than my own fish at home that we've had for a long time. Will definitely be back. read more

Bought an Ornate Mointor for this place , the lady/kid who got the Mointor out of cage was to afraid to handle it so she used feeding prongs and a couple Pyrex lids to get him out of his cage, I couldn't believe what I saw absolutely pathetic and sad letting someone that inexperienced handle reptiles that way read more

This is my second time at Tropical Treasures. I love that they are located conveniently near my commute. The staff are pretty helpful. The store is always cluttered. There were boxes in front of their cool tropical marine coral fish: clown fish, surgeon fish, etc. The first time I came in, they were out of super worms. Today, when I went in, they had super worms at ten cents each. They seemed a little pricey plus the 20 I bought were of distinctly different sizes. read more

Unfortunately, I got give them a two and it's only because of these two reasons. I know In my last review I gave them a 5 but I just went in this morning regarding the fish I bought from them yesterday afternoon. The guy their at the store just informed me they don't do returns on any fish over 10 dollars. Which personally it's a bit disappointing I was never informed about this. I guess the sign they have up their is pretty small you have to literally stand in front to read the return policy. I'm bummed out because I've bought many fish here and all of them are alive and doing fine. That is one reason why I'm giving them a two star. The second reason is and I get every fish store owner have their on policy but most places I have been too have a warranty of at least 48 hours on any expensive fish over 35 or even 50 I have seen. It's a bit disappointing that the warranty is only for fish of 10 dollars or less that's kinda the sad part a fish of 10 dollars value is not as great as that of a 20 dollar or 50 dollar fish. The fish I bought was a arowona and yes it looked fine at their store when I bought it but when i brought it home left in the bag for about 20 mins for it to get used to the water temperature and finally let go it looked fine for a few hours but almost at midnight I realized it was swimming awkward and he was trying to surface and couldn't would sink to the bottom and basically died after a few hours. My tank was just cleaned two days prior to the purchase and all the other fish were fine. I also keep my water temperature at 78 to 80 degrees. All the other fish are much smaller than this fish. Overall it's a good store but I personally was left with a sore taste about their policy. I'm not sure if I would ever purchase a fish over 10 dollars or even come back. I wasn't really asking for my money back either before the guy cut me out all I asked was if store credit or even a replacement fish can be given. Just a warning to anyone who wants to buy fish over 10 dollars here no store credit given or replacement. read more

I stopped into Tropical Treasures about a year ago for the first time after my friends Heater in his house went down and he was waiting for the home warranty to fix it. Being afraid that the temp drop in the house would kill his fish, we bought a couple tanks and moved the fish to my place. Long story short, we used tap water and all the fish died which led me to this store. 11 months later I now have my own fish tank with Starfish, Puffers, Nemo's and a Blue Lobster. All thanks to Tropical Treasures. The employees are all extremely friendly and eager to help and answers any of my questions. Even when there are multiple customers in the store and the employees are juggling feeding, cleaning tanks and helping customers, I still get exceptional service. I have had some days where an employee or two is having a bad day or extremely busy, but after addressing this with the owner Don, he immediately resolved the issue. I went through a few fish that just wouldn't eat and the owner ending up ordering the fish I was having trouble with, holding it for a week to make sure it was eating and doing well, then he gave it to me on the house because of the last two that didn't make it. He did this even after he told me there was no guarantee on this specific fish and that he didn't think it was compatible with the other fish in the tank. If there is a fish I want, he has it in within a week pending it is available. I have recommended several people to this store that all have their own thriving tanks now. I don't come to this store for someone to wipe my ass and massage my neck, I come here for the expert advice, competitive pricing and overwhelming knowledge that the staff has. If one employee doesn't know the answer they either find it or direct me to the more experienced employees. I am still waiting on the "million dollar eel..." a Golden or Banana Eel. But no other fish store in town can get it so I won't hold that against them :) Thank you for all your help Tropical Treasures!!!!! You shouldn't be growing the algae in one of your tank that hold live animals. Or maybe you should offer them cichlid food. You had no excuse over the turtles. The man was very rude to me, he was bald, taller. I was asking about bearded dragons and asked about them price matching a bundle for a setup. One place offered the same deal but for 160 instead of 200. There dragons were 100. He's like I'll sell you the dragon for 200 and I'll sell you the cage for 160. He undermined my care for my animals because I didn't buy a cage from their store. I asked about a return policy or anything if an animal becomes ill within the first month. He told me he doesn't know if I'm putting it in a shoe box or not. He was rude and if it wasn't for the good price on my dragon. I would've told him off. Will not be going back. My boyfriend and I came here today to look at their cichlids and some other fish. After getting a few fish bagged, we forgot we had a water sample in our car to test. They offered to test it and turns out our nitrates are super high. Sam and his fellow female employee, unfortunately I didn't get her name, were both extremely helpful with giving us tips and tricks on how we can lower our nitrates. We decided it was best to wait on purchasing the fish until our levels were under control. They were super understanding and polite. I will definitely come back here. Thanks guys! read more

i recently went here to get a betta and if they had any neon tetras and it was one of the best decisions i've made for my aquarium, my betta came from their sorority tank so i knew she would be fine with the neon tetras and all the fish are so healthy and happy all the tanks were clean and the prices are amazing i spent $32 and got a female dumbo betta ($7) 6 tetras (1.99 each) some plants ($4) and food for the tetras ($4.99) everyone working was really nice and helpful no complaints will be my go to fish store read more
