I genuinely hate giving a bad review when the people involved tried hard but didn't succeed in terms of satisfaction. But it is what it is. In fairness to Kona Grill, we dined there on Christmas day. Of course it was busy, so I'm taking that into account or I likely would have given only one star. We had early reservations for dinner (4:30, if I recall) and didn't have to wait for too long beyond 4:30 to be seated, and there were 8 of us at the table. It took quite a while before we saw our server - again they were busy, I get it. Took a little while to order food as well. Food took quite a while to receive and as they were dropping plates off, I literally said to myself, tell me this isn't the portions they serve. My $49 Filet Mignon looked like it was maybe 4 ounces. A small dollop of mashed potatoes on the side and that's it. I cut into my steak and the first couple of bites were a bit under cooked and 100% without seasoning. Bland is an understatement. Spending $49 on a steak and dollop of potatoes (no vegetables, no salad or soup, etc), I would expect the steak to be overwhelmingly amazing. By the third bite, now in the middle of the steak, it was basically rare. I ordered it medium. I could have handled medium rare, but not rare. The server took it back to cook longer, and the request was denied by the kitchen because I had eaten from it. It would have been easy to put the filet in its own separate pan and throw it under the broiler for a minute or two, but I receive the steak back, even colder now than before, still rare. They offered to cook a whole new steak but by this time, everyone else was done eating. I took it home and cooked it more, but In addition, one of my nephews received the wrong order entirely and two other people at the table felt their meals were so-so at best. My mom's prime rib was fattier than they normally are and overcooked. It was no more than 1/2 thick (if that) and it was clear it was not cut straight from the rib cooked medium, like it should. It was likely a piece that was undercooked and they broiled it too long. They were also out of several things, which we were notified of when the server came back from putting our order in, including mac and cheese for one of the kids. Had to put in new orders. Keep in mind, we were there at the beginning of dinner service, not at the end. Unfortunately, not one person in our party of 8 was truly happy. I get they were busy, I get things happen, but it just wasn't a particularly good experience and being on Christmas, we had hoped for so much more. I will say the server was very friendly and professional. I don't blame him for most of our experience, most of it was the food, the cost and the portions (other than the salads a couple of people had, they were large). Considering the cost for 8 people and the experience we had, portions, etc.. I don't see any of us going back anytime soon. read more

We were excited to come here on Christmas Day this year as they have a really good children's menu selection. When we arrived, the hostess was very rude. Then when we sat down, we were advised to order food right away, this was before we even were given water. Then we found out they are not offering the kids menu on Christmas and the only thing they had was one meal that no kid is going to order. It was turkey, stuffing and vegetables. We went ahead and ordered our food. None of the food had any flavor, asked for A1 for the steak to maybe give it flavor and I was told they ran out of it. Worst meal I have had in years and spent $200! The service was horrible too. I have to be honest - the meals were not very good. cheeseburger was dry and without taste. clam chowder was not very good. had much better at High Tides. Asian stir fried entrees lacked flavor - they tasted like they were "store bought" and microwaved. The chicken served on the Asian salad was cold - as if it was chilled, then cut up and served straight on top of the salad. Shockingly bad. The sushi roll appetizers were decent but again nothing exceptional for a restaurant that is supposed to serve fine Asian. The Two kids meals turned out to be the most enjoyed by anyone at the table. After going to the gym and running errands, I needed to get something to eat. Since it was Valentine's Day thought we'd beat the crowd and go for a late lunch and early dinner. We had an amazing experience, the food was delicious and the atmosphere was great. The customer service was outstanding! I came in for my birthday and had a great meal! The sashimi bowl is awesome! Great portions and flavors on the sushi, and perfectly complimented with rice. Lots of great appetizers and mains to keep me coming back, and good deals during Happy Hour too. The service is great, David was so welcoming and helpful! Our family came here for our Christmas dinner. We had a reservation for 5:45. We were seated by 6:15, our server came to our table by 6:30, and we didn't get drinks until almost 6.55. Additionally we didn't order food until 7::30 due to how busy our poor server was. The avocado egg roll appetizers were mushy, the chicken story fry was ice cold, was sent back and then I just decided it was disgusting with fatty dark meat chicken. For the wait, disgusting limited food options, sub par service, and $275 bill, I would never recommend this place for a holiday dinner. I've been to a few different Kona Grill locations and after this last visit I'll say this is probably the last time. The decor hasn't changed in many years and its starting to look really outdated. The large fish tank is nice but honestly not the attraction it was years ago. We were seated near a family with so many kids that were running around I felt like I was in a zoo. I'm not against family friendly restaurants but when the prices are what they are I expect a bit more. Speaking of prices.....$25 per sushi roll?!?! Seriously? Most of the appetizers were in this range as well. With a party of 4 including two kids who had one dish each and split a desert, one roll and one appetizer and our bill was over $150 before tip. That is absolutely insane for the amount and quality of food received and only one drink included. Our server was pleasant but I was really turned off when when my wife and I were asked to provide id while we're sitting with two kids who are in high school. Despite this, we still had to wait for about thirty minutes to be seated, as the restaurant seemed to have overbooked on reservations. Furthermore, our party of 11 ended up having to be split into three different tables. Food was not great-- The cheese of the burger I ordered was barely melted, if at all, and it seemed to have been quickly slapped together. It did not seem worth the price. However, this might be more attributed to how overwhelmed the restaurant was at the time we visited, rather than the skill or effort of the chefs. It's 2026 and Kona Grill--in its infinite wisdom--has just a couple GF options on their menu. Incredibly disappointing--not even GF buns and all of their butter is mixed with soy sauce--which has wheat. So if you want GF butter at Kona Grill, you're running to Fry's to buy your own. Ordered a $27 hamburger and got two In-N-Out thin patties with some wilting lettuce and tomatoes and french fries. Grossly overpriced and underwhelming food, not to mention the cooks messed up two orders in our party including lukewarm Pad Thai. This place is a joke and I'm not sure how it will stay in business. We could've lit $62 on fire and felt better about ourselves vs. spending that amount for the food we got at Kona Grill. read more

We came here for a date night and to experience Arizona Restaurant Week. The food was so delicious! The Picasso Roll was spicy and beautifully presented. I loved the Ribeye Meatballs. The Cilantro Lime Chicken was the best bite of the night. The only bummer of the evening was dessert; the brownie seemed like it was not made in-house, it was dry and not exactly flavorful. The service moved at a glacial pace. Everyone was super friendly and apologetic, but it took almost 2 1/2 hours for three predetermined courses to come out. Luckily I enjoy my husband's company! Definitely not what you expect from a place that brands itself as "upscale." Adding insult to injury, my sister had a $25 sign-up coupon from their rewards program, which they refused to honor. There were no disclaimers or restrictions listed, but we were told "the system won't allow it." That felt like a bait-and-switch and left a bad taste before the food even arrived. Speaking of food--sadly, that didn't redeem the night either. Everything we ordered was forgettable, and overall, the experience felt like a waste of what should have been a special evening. It's especially disappointing given that Kona Grill is part of the same hospitality group that owns STK Steakhouse. After this, I have zero interest in trying STK. Our server was fantastic, but the rest of the Kona Grill experience has gone greatly downhill the past few months. They changed their Happy Hour menu so our $3 Truly's are no longer offered, leaving just a couple crappy beer choices for that price, or weak cocktails at the $6 or $9 HH price. Portions on the HH food have shrunk, and it's ridiculous how they replaced the popcorn chicken with 2 chicken strips oddly served over 2 cold golf ball size mashed potatoes scoops- we made the mistake of ordering them last time & wont again, and watched 3 other tables order them and all left the gross potatoes. Our food we got this time (loaded fries, bbq chicken flatbread, & spicy shrimp tempura) was only slightly warm, an improvement over our last visit when the dishes came out COLD, but still nowhere near hot & fresh as they should be. We had planned to do brunch last week but learned they not only removed nearly every brunch entree (there's like 3 left) they increased the price of the assorted flavor mimosas from $3 to $9! Who on earth would pay $9 for a single mimosa?! The rest of their regular menu is so overpriced for a chain average restaurant you'd think looking at the prices it was a high end restaurant. We only went yesterday to redeem my $25 half birthday certificate but going forward for the birthday rewards in their shared program but going forward we'll plan to drive to use at Ra Sushi or STK Steak for a better experience. The restaurant is very cute and clean, but it did not seem like any staff wanted to be there. When we walked in the host was reading a book and didn't not greet us so we just stood there and then decided to sit at the bar. When we got to the bar, we were given menus but still not really greeted, it was a bit odd. Then we ordered the potstickers ($6) they tasted super bland and super tiny. It came with 3 of them so these potstickers were 2$ a piece and not at all worth it. Then we got the angry edamame (3$) these had such an odd flavor to them. It tasted as if they used dirty sink water to steam them and then put a weird seasoning on top. Then we ordered the avocado rolls ($9) these were crispy and had flavor. Would I get them again? probably not but they did the job. Then the last thing we ordered was 2 shrimp tacos they were (3$) each, so 6$ for two tacos. They were two prices of mini shrimps; they came with a spicy chipotle sauce; they were okay: still not much flavor. We also ordered a bbq chicken pizza, that was the worst thing I've ever had. It tasted like sandwich cheese was on top; and when it was delivered it was room temperature. ($6$) For the prices, portions; and quality I would not come again. Everyone finished eating and we still hadn't received our sushi! We finally got them- and they weren't even the right rolls! How a place charges over $20 for a roll and you get them after everyone is done eating and they are wrong... again we thought maybe it was a one time thing but clearly this is how things are at Kona in Gilbert! We came here on a whim after we changed our mind about going to another spot in the San Tan Mall area. I am very happy with our decision! I've always enjoyed the Kona vibes, as it isn't fancy or too casual and is good for all walks of life, including kiddos. We were seated right away, even though it was dinner/happy hour. Our server was very nice and got our drink orders and kept us up to date on when our food was coming out. I got a happy hour spicy roll and the shrimp tacos. Just a forewarning, the shrimp tacos are spicier than expected, but so very tasty. I also got a sake bomber, which I always enjoy when having sushi or seafood. It was my mom's birthday, so we got a complimentary dessert. She chose the seasonal chocolate cake and it was soooo good. Service was cheerful and quick. Downside was the pounding music. There were about 10 people in the place and they had the music turned up loud like you were a big night club.
