If you don't come during HH (the ones marked HH are half off), then this isn't worth it! To start off, we ordered the pork and shrimp lumpia with sweet and sour sauce. This was very delicious and juicy! Additionally we ordered the sardines conservas. This was definitely interesting to try out but we didn't expect to be served literally from a can of sardines... The ginger and soy chicken drummies were tiny and flavorful. For entrees we ordered the three meat bowls. The pork tocino bowl was very delicious and I liked that the most. It was packed full of flavors! The beef steak tapa bowl was decent. All the reviews I've read here rave about the pork adobo bowl. I don't understand the hype but it was definitely cooked perfectly. I was afraid it would be a little dry but surprisingly it wasn't at all! It was very tender. It's good if you don't want your dish to be too flavorful. This place is SO FUN! I love trying out different speakeasies. Though some locations are easier to find than others. Knee High Stocking is right across the street from Pie Bar and it's on the little corner section of the building. We went on a Saturday night with about 6 people and waited from about 15 minutes (not bad). There is an upstairs and a downstairs area- we went downstairs. I was SO IMPRESSED because the food there was actually really good. I go into speakeasies usually just to grab a drink but because they had Filipino food, I had to try. Lumpia Bar with Pork- OMG how can I resist a fried egg roll with meat in it!? You definitely can't go wrong with ordering the lumpia. Pork Adobo Bowl- The pork was SO tender. This dish has the perfect umami taste. It came with rice and a soft boiled egg...drrooooollll. It was all inside a small clay pot-like bowl with a lid so all the heat stayed in. Pork Tocino Bowl- This was good too, it tasted a lot more fresh. I think this is something that is easily likeable. If this is the first time eating filipino food, then this is something good as your first. As you make your way inside, it's dark, rustic looking, with a bottom basement floor that is pitch dark. It's a great place to come with friends. I ordered their summer special, "Thank You For Smoking" which is Johnny Walker black scotch whiskey, amaro meletti, cynar, honey simple, cardamom bitters, and a cinnamon stick burned! When it arrives to your table, the scent from the burning cinnamon stick takes over everything and smells like something is burning in the woods lol! Initially came here for one of our wedding anniversaries. Perennially late by nature, I got her out and about two hours early and made her promise to abide by MY clock, and not hers. Came here with a group of friends for brunch and absolutely loved it. The location isn't big so I would recommend making a reservation beforehand. I had to make a last minute update to my online reservation which was pretty easy. All I had to do was send a text to the phone number provided and ta-da I got a response shortly after that it was completed. The restaurant gives a homey vibe and I found it super interesting that you have to ring a doorbell to get in. I had been a fan of Knee-High Stocking since my first trip to Seattle in 2009. Like a true speak-easy, this place was easy to adore for its hidden location, quaint charm, and unique cocktails. Plus, the texting option for reservations is very handy. However, I was truly disappointed during a recent visit. I was able to make a reservation just fine for 2 around 9 pm on a Sunday night. Arrived on time and was seated at a table directly by the door. The place is tiny, so I didn't mind, especially since it's always a tad on the warm side indoors, and the coming/going of clientele provided a cooling outdoor relief. Ordered two standard cocktails (whiskey sour and their grape-berri knee-high). Also ordered a Bavarian pretzel. Got the pretzel in a timely manner, but it was cold and stale. Ate it anyway because we were hungry. Then sat. 15 minutes pass. Then 30. Then 45. By almost an hour, I asked the waitress if the drinks were ready, or if not, to cancel them. She brought them out and apologized for the wait. I wasn't a fan of my drink and left it on the table. My friend didn't like her whiskey sour but gulped it down when we realized they charged us $16 for it. The menu says to be patient, but I think 45+ minutes for two drinks, even on a busy night, is excessive. Nearly $40 for two drinks and a pretzel is just highway robbery. Oh Knee High, why are you so good to me? The other day I noticed their Yelp announcement about free Plymouth Gin Punch on August 7th, so I knew I had to stop by for at least a moment. The punch this time was called Sloe Gin Ricky and it was delicious. I wouldn't even have minded paying $3 per cup because three of them definitely got me to a place that one $9 cocktail usually doesn't. Plus it just looked great sitting on the bar with all those cute little cups next to it. I was planning to order a drink because I usually start feeling weird about consuming too much free things at an establishment without spending any money, but that punch was just so good and I had dinner plans elsewhere (so I didn't want to order food). I ended up leaving a nice tip and taking off after that. I sure was tempted by their new lamb sliders, though! So: Great atmosphere (especially after dark or at bar), great customer service, great food, great cocktails, and every once in a while there are great specials on the Yelp page that make at least some of my visits very affordable. Didn't know that you had to make reservations so luckily we tried our luck and they had a time slot open for us before another party showed up. I would describe my experience at knee high stocking to be eye opening. We were seated at the bar in the basement and were treated by Jack, the mixologist with over 15 years experience. There is a menu, but I think jacks expertise lies in his creativity to conjure up different concoctions of cocktail based on your preferred taste and setting things on fire. Yes, I've been to other bars with similar experiences but I believe Jack set the standard apart for miles. I was delighted to see the artist at work, mixing various liquor and liqueurs and lighting different herbs on fire. I had the ube be baby drink, ube flavored cocktail in a champagne glass. The drink was topped off with ube foam which I really enjoyed. We had another three drinks that were off menu and were all delightful. Reservations are highly recommended, and its super easy to do, even on a phone. I made a reservation for midnight at 10:30pm on the same night, so its not a daunting task. The place itself is pretty big as I explored downstairs to go to the bathroom. I would actually prefer sitting downstairs, if you have that option, as the decor & vibe defintiely change. It is the typical dim lit atmosphere with the low hum of music complimenting the swanky vibe. Drinks are ~$15-18 here, but totally worth it as they are definteily on the stronger end of the spectrum. The service was excellent, they dealt with my overly-outgoing drunk friends with grace. I communicated i wanted something tequila-y, smoky, and spicy and I was recommended a drink on the previous menu. The drink turned out good, but it wasn't really what I was looking for. Summary: Pretentious service for overpriced food that you can DIY at home. Came here to celebrate a friend's birthday, and was excited to realize the potential of this low key speakeasy featuring "Filipino-American" comfort food. And man, I really wanted to like this place, but there was simply nothing to love. The not so terrific night started at the entrance when I received a thorough up and down, you-are-a-peasant look from the woman at the front who finally let me through after rudely questioning if I had a reservation. Like aight woman, you ain't guarding the gates of heaven, I'm trynna come in so I can pay the restaurant money, smh. Our party was seated downstairs (please note, this place is NOT ideal for large parties as we were smushed in a corner amidst a tiny room that featured a couple other smaller parties). Drinks were not surprisingly expensive, so I was like nah, imma just get some more food with the drink money. So lets get down to the food. I ordered and shared the following with a couple of other friends: 1. Pork Tocino Bowl (2/5 stars) $16: This goes for the other bowls as well, the bowl itself didn't taste bad, it actually tasted decent. The problem was, it was $16 for a bowl of rice with pork, soy sauce, and herbs that I could have easily made at home. It was one of those, "oh-my-goodness, that's it? We have to try and prolong the dish and make it last five mouthfuls instead of the three it should take to finish the entire dish" situations. For some of the other bowls, it was seemed like a marinated meat with a random assortment of other vegetables thrown in to desperately provide the dish with something other than 4 pieces of meat and white rice. For this to be the "staple" dish of the restaurant, it simply was mediocre at best. I'm not Filipino, but I don't think this dish pays homage to anything other than overpriced fusion food. 2. Beef Steak Tapa Bowl (2/5 stars) $17: See above^^^ 3. Pork Adobo Bowl (2/5 stars) $19: Ditto^^ Our server, bless her soul, did not have an easy job trying to take orders from our group of 10, but she did well given the circumstances and I appreciate her genuine and positive demeanor. However, Mr. Macho (a male who worked the bar primarily downstairs) decided he needed to flex throughout the meal, and came over at least three times to rudely tell us to keep the noise down. On one hand I totally agree, our group could have been quieter and we did make an effort to quiet down after the first scolding. On the other hand, the absolute condescending and rude tone along with his privileged body language in which he told us to quiet down each time made me want to tell every person I meet to not come to this restaurant. Overall, I was mad that at $46/person, I left starving and disrespected. Like come on, if you gonna be disrespectful at least have good food or leave my feeling stuffed. But for expensive prices, small portions, crappy service- I wouldn't have paid $10 for the experience. And no pictures were taken because of how dimly lit the restaurant is. Will not be back. TIP: There is free street parking nearby the restaurant and the restaurant itself is difficult to find as its on the intersection of a couple of different streets. read more

My first time ever going to a speakeasy. Usually with speakeasies there's a secret code word but for this one all you need to do is to ring the doorbell. I had reservations and honestly I felt like I really didn't need them. I went on a Friday around 7:30pm and strangely enough it wasn't as busy as I thought it would be. When we entered (after we got carded which I was fine with since I was waiting for someone to card me just after turning 21 a couple days before I went) we walked past an area with a bar and went downstairs and passed that bar into a small room. The decor of the basement was wayyy better than the upstairs and had so much more of a speakeasy vibe to it. I got the drink I believe called the "Tangerine" (henessey, port, pineapple, orange juice) and my other friends got "a hard days night" in a tea cup and then "smokey the pear" (which apparently smelled super fruity but had a really cooked aftertaste). Overall my drink tasted pretty good. As for the food, I found it incredibly interesting that this speakeasy served filipino food which actually tasted really good. When we were there, this 6 person group got pretty rowdy which precipitated another large group talking loudly to be heard. All in all this really hindered the speakeasy ambiance. If you want to hang out with a group of friends, chose a different scene. If you want a fun date night, this is a great spot but be prepared to have trouble hearing. Great food and drinks in this private speakeasy setting..located at the start of Cap Hill, it is easy to miss but should not be missed! With only a tiny little placard letting on that you are at the right door, it is not as difficult to get a table here as it seems. Inside this small space is dimly lit with candles and closed window shades. The food and drink offerings are unique and well worth the hype and wait you may have endured. The Filipino food is mostly served during the brunch hours, with more general bar bites served in the evenings. If you get claustrophobic in small spaces this may not be the place for you. When it is at full capacity it can be quite stuffy. They could benefit from some air circulation within the room. Craft cocktail bars are by far my favorite places to drink. I adore them; Canon, Bathtub Gin, Witness, etc. But I won't be adding Knee High Stocking to the rotation. It's not that they did anything wrong, the drinks were well made and strong. It was the vibe that really soured me on the experience. Allow me to elaborate in greater detail... We got seated right by the door so every time someone came or went, we got a blast of cold air. Perhaps our fault for coming in on an April night, but even still the bar is in Washington, we have cold nights nine months out of the year; I'd hoped they'd have addressed this internally. Additionally, the group behind us was obnoxiously loud, it was making the other patrons visibly uncomfortable with their language and volume. There were 3 of us and after ringing the doorbell we were greeted shortly after and welcome in for 40 minutes. The space was very tight and they do have additional seats and a bar downstairs. The decor was unique and it was a treat to hear the doorbell ring every so often. They had a reservation right after us so we settled on a quick drink. I had the Holy Thursday and my wife and sister had the absinthe. The drinks were well presented and tasted fine. We weren't blown away however the waitress did make sure to let us know the absinthe was top shelf. Parking may be tough around here we did not see a designated lot, if you drive around close by you may be luck to find street parking. We paid $55 for 3 drinks which seems a bit steep to me for what we had but nonetheless we got to try out a Seattle speakeasy. read more

Seeing as it was a Wednesday night, it was not surprising that it was a quiet night for business. As it happens, I shared the bar with a bachelor party and an older couple. I just found my favorite cocktail ever, Ube Be Baby. DON'T SLEEP ON THIS. If you love ube and are a fan of Hennessey, this cocktail is so delicious. I came here one night with a bunch of my girlfriends and after they tried mine during the first round, so many of them got it for our second round. It's absolutely delicious and super smooth. The place wasn't too hard to find. It's very close to pie bar. You have to make a reservation in order to get in. I'm super surprised by how far underground it goes. We were seated at the lowest level. The atmosphere is really vintage and super intimate. Lighting was low and black & white projector movies are playing on the walls (well it was on the level we were at). Food is a little pricy and portion sizes are small so I wouldn't recommend coming here hungry. It's a great place to grab drinks and some small bites as well. I recommended a guy friend of mine to bring a date here and he said it was a perfect date night spot *hint hint FYI. On a rare night of snow and broken dinner plans, Knee High Stocking really came through. We were originally planning to go to Kedai Mekan at 5pm to avoid the usual long line, but because of the heavy amount of snow, KM posted on their door that they were closed. The detail of having our dinner dreams broken is important because it meant that we were expecting our Plan B to be weak and unsatisfying. Fortunately, we stumbled upon KHS though Yelp and it really made our night. We rang the doorbell and were greeted by a nice hostess. I tried to peer into the room, but the entrance is covered by a black curtain, adding to the intimacy. The hostess took us to our table and was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about their drink list. I had the night's special (I forget the name, but it was a sour) as suggested by the waitress, and it was awesome, full of complex flavor. We also ordered the pork lumpia with jalapeno sour cream and pork adobo. The lumpia was alright, and the jalapeno sour cream was actually pretty spicy. The pork adobo, however, was out of this world. It comes in a stone pot with garlic fried rice and the whole dish really melts in your mouth. There was a few bites left that we couldn't finish, but I didn't even feel bad about getting it boxed because it was that good. KHS has a way of making the night feel really special. Whether it's the vibe or the prices, it worked out well for us. I'd definitely come back for another special date night or to impressed a good friend from out of town. read more
