Nagasaki Champon Ramen (with seafood and vegetables)
    Sel Z.

Kenzo Ramen is a chain ramen restaurant that has locations throughout Ontario. It has a wide selection of ramen and donburi (rice bowl) options, and the ability to customize each order (by adding or substituting certain ingredients). They have the basic and traditional ramen types in the menu (such as shoyu, shio, miso, and Sapporo ramen), as well as the more special ones (tonkotsu, jisu, tsuke, Nagasaki champon, yakisoba). They even have vegetarian options with veg-based broth, tofu, and vegetables. You can turn most dishes to be vegetarian, according to the menu. All the ramen bowl portion sizes here are huge. I saw most people asked for a container after their meal because they could not finish everything in one bowl. The Nagasaki Champon Ramen had a slightly thicker broth compared to the traditional ramens, and a more seafood-y taste in the broth. It came with mussels, scallops, squid, shrimps, and fresh vegetables (bok choy, bell pepper, onion, mushrooms, beansprouts). I ordered extra vegetables, so it came with a heap mount of extra veggies. I especially loved the crunchy beansprouts, and the fact that they were quite generous with the amount they gave. The only downside was that almost all the mussels that came with the ramen were closed shut, or had barely any mussel meat inside. The other seafoods (shrimps, squid, scallops) were ok though. The dons / rice bowls were also pretty good. We ordered Oyakodon, but substituted the chicken with shrimps. The eggs were the best part in this don. The bowl consisted of large shrimps scrambled with eggs, on a bed of rice with mushrooms, onions, donburi & unagi sauces, and topped with thinly sliced scallion, shredded nori, and red ginger. It was warm, hearty, and delicious! It came with miso soup and a small side salad (mostly shredded lettuce). This location on Bloor St. West was joined with a bubble tea place, so there was a steady inflow of traffic from people picking up BBT for to-go. It's great if you want to combine your ramen meal with BBT. Seatings consist of regular tables, with 2 tables near the window that have comfortable pillows.

I tried the Kenzo Ramen on Bloor in Etobicoke by Islington. Noticed it's not listed on Yelp so posting it here. Small location with both indoor and outdoor dining. Decided to try the Shoyu Ramen with chicken and thought it was pretty decent. I've had Kinton many times and both are pretty solid inexpensive quick service options. Kinton probably bit larger portion size and more options for ramen and toppings, however I found the Shoyu base was more flavourful at Kenzo. Would recommend for a quick meal.

One of the best ramen places I've been to inToronto! They also have gluten-free noodles and vegetarian options. Even my 6 years old son loved their miso. I'll certainly be coming back

I had the tonkotsu shio ramen and the karaage at Kenzo. I enjoyed the ramen, but I felt that the egg was rather salty. Also, the karaage wasn't what I expected, but it was not bad. (blur photo of karaage because i forgot to take a picture of it so i took a screenshot of a video i took)

Kenzo Ramen was a pleasant surprise. On Bloor, near UofT, it was a convenient location. Hard to find parking though. It was busy, but still had room, no wait. I got the Netsu Ramen. There was a mix of everything - ramen, vegetable and chicken. The portion was reasonable. But to be honest, whenever I eat ramen, it's never that filling. Everything was reasonably priced. The waitress was very friendly, explaining the spice levels, promptly refilling drinks and letting us chat.

Came in for lunch with a friend. Place was mostly empty except for maybe one other table of customers. I ordered the shio ramen. Food was quick to arrive. It tasted good however was really small and not filling (still hungry after). There is a yelp coupon you get when checking in that offers 10% off if you pay cash.

Kenzo Japanese Noodle House opened a new location in the Annex. The decoration is more chic and modern compared to their Dundas Street location which is more traditional Japanese. Bright lighting and a lot more spacious.... The service is fast and friendly. Seems like there are more waitstaffs working and we were here for an early pre dinner snack so we were seated quickly and served immediately! We ordered the Miso Ramen ($6.95) and Tonkotsu Ramen ($8.95). Their machine for Tacoyaki not working that day, would like to try that. Tonkotsu broth is really rich, milky in colour and with tons of "porky" flavours.. We both prefer that to the Miso Ramen.. The Miso Ramen is of dark miso based just lack some complexity to the broth.... Noodle was nicely cooked... a little chewy with a lot of texture... Slurp Slurp Slurp! I have to make a note about the Chasu, after eating at all 3 Kenzo Ramen locations.. I have to say the one up at North York is the best! Here the chasu is cut really thin, a little dry... and they don't have that little smokey flavour since they did not grilled them before serving.... Here also they don't have the set menu (basic Ramen+3 gyoza) like what they offer up at North York. Green Tea is $1 charge. I am glad that there are more and more Ramen restaurants in TO! If you are in the area, it is great to have a steamy hot Ramen on a chilly winter day! They accepts Visa and Mastercard.

Not all Kenzo Ramen restaurants are the same. This is the best of all I've been to (the worse is on Queen West of Bathurst) while some are below average (such as the on Yonge and Sheppard). The texture of their noodles (although I've had better), this of all the Kenzo's I've been to is the best. Their soup base and garnishing are so superior to other locations. You can give out the ingredients. You can even give out the recipe. But you cannot teach a mediocre cook how to be a great chef.

Netsu Ramen review (highly recommended!) Price: 11.50 pretax n tip - good price for their larger than regular portion. Meat option: ground pork or chicken. I usually go with chicken. The chicken comes in small chunks, almost like the ones you find in a chicken skewer. It's not dry and has similar garlicky BBQ flavour found in ClubHouse BBQ chicken seasoning. Greens n veggies: 100% there's an explosion of bean sprouts which adds a bit of crunchiness to your ramen experience, green onions, thin sliced red carrots, mushrooms, and black fungus. For those that like veggies with their ramen, this is your to-go ramen choice. Soup: the menu says it's got chilli in it but I asked for a milder version of that to save my taste buds from jumping on fire. Temperature wise, the soup stayed warm all the way to my last bite of the meal. It really warmed me up on a cold day of -3 degrees. As someone mentioned in their food blog, this soup is "worthy of gastronomic attention". Ramen: Kenzo is famous for their wheat noodles. The noodles here are the thin ones that are great for slurping. It hits the spot when you're starving and cold!

    King of kings bowl!

We got into the venue as soon as it opened cause we were headed to the pride parade after. It was empty and we were the firsts the waitress was very nice, friendly, accommodating, and quick. We got our food within 10 mins of ordering. Everything was hot and our waters were always full. I ordered the king of kings bowl which was huge and consisted of pork, ground pork, bamboo shoots, fresh seaweed, dried seaweed, bean sprouts and so much more. Overall, it was an amazing bowl. The flavor though not strong definitely hit the spot. It was also suppose to be spicy but for my palate I would say it only reached maybe a 3-4 out of 10. (I can tolerate quite a lot of spice) They unfortunately lacked a diverse dessert menu, but in the end, everything was pleasing. The bowl I got which was their biggest was only about $13. The other bowls ranged from $10-12. Definitely happy with my decision to try this place out.

Veggie ramen with a beautiful presentation.

This place is pretty good! I remember walking in several months back and then walking out. The good as intrigue me but I don't know what they are... are they dumplings? I'm kinda not impressed with their modern design but I understand the need for businesses to have an up-to-date-with-the-times atmosphere. It looks like a cafeteria style to me, which indicates to me; eat, pay and move on. I tried their vegetarian ramen. Incredibly flavorful! I liked that it was enough for two sittings and when it got packed up and then I went back to it, it tasted like my favourite dish from a restaurant downtown that closed down a couple years ago. In essence, this soup was nostalgic and all the good kind. I do enjoy trying new things and this ramen had a specific kind of mushroom in it... I think it was mushroom. It could have been something similar to seaweed. Either way, the texture in my mouth was slimy. Weird description of food that is meant to be appetizing. But it was very tasty. Especially as a pairing with the entirety of the soup, which was over all good. I love the eggs they put in Ramen. I was introduced to it, while in New York and I never would've thought to put egg in soup like that, hard boiled but they have a special process in its preparation that works as an integral part of ramen. In my books anyway. Here, to me it's a bit pricey... $.80 for half an egg. Eesh! I get it... soft boiled then marinated in their sauce to make it taste the way it does... dual process. Equals twice as much money to pay. In conclusion, when I am feeling under the weather, ramen is my new go to... at least if I feel I can stomach the complexity of having many ingredients at a time. Otherwise, still chicken noodle soup: simple. I would definitely venture here again!

Lots of tasty ramen options, with quick service and all reasonably priced. The gyoza, was a little slimy, could have been fried more, but didn't ruin our lunch!

New decor in the restaurant. It looks great and they even added a bubble tea cafe on the inside. Food was great, service was even better. The yakisoba was just a bit too salty, but overall very satisfying.

The seafood and tonkotsu broth was rich, savory, and full of flavor. It was a little too salty to drink on its own, but perfect for dipping the noodles. The only thing to note is that the cold noodles stayed quite firm even after sitting in the broth for a while, so if you prefer a softer texture, I would recommend asking for hot noodles instead. The soft-boiled egg was also really good, slightly sweet, chilled, and very flavorful. We also tried the Spicy Red Miso ramen, which was not actually very spicy and leaned a little sweet. The broth was pleasant, though my teammate felt there were so many onions and green onions that they covered some of the miso flavor. The chashu, however, was excellent, with a really nice balance of lean meat and fat without feeling greasy. The takoyaki was classic and well done, crisp on the outside, soft in the middle, with generous pieces of octopus inside. The karaage was also very solid, crispy outside and juicy inside, with a seasoning that had a clear ginger and cooking wine aroma. Overall, a very enjoyable meal, especially if you like rich broths and comforting Japanese side dishes.

My friend had the King of Kings as our server said this is one of their most popular choices. I opted for the Spicy Charsu. Now I understand some people can't handle heat but I live off of Purple Tongue hot sauce which is made with some pretty hot peppers. I asked for a level one and the lady explained that the spice level on the Charsu was a whole series of levels higher than the King of Kings. I get that . Give me the heat. Anywho, she was comfortable with giving me 0.5 but said I could make it hotter if need be. Ok, better to start smaller I guess. They put some sauce on the side which I added to my bowl. Personally I found the 0.5 a nice tingle; it was good. Made my nose run. But I'm totally getting the level 1 next time. My friend however tried a sip of my broth, spit it out and said poison poison because of the heat Mind you, his King of Kings was a level 1. Which to me tasted creamy and delicious. The concerned server told me that it may be painful, but being the chili head that I am, I gladly took on the challenge. The broth was magma red, but it was not as spicy as I thought it would be. Don't get me wrong, it was spicy but not to the point where it would warrant a warning. The spicy broth tasted like a mix of Buldak sauce and Capsaicin, but didn't have much depth. I finished my ramen, broth and all and enjoyed most of the experience. The least favorite was the chasu and the egg as chasu did not taste fresh, and I could not taste the char on them at all. The egg was over-cooked and under marinated which was disappointing. It's still one of the few ramen options in Durham but can't say it's comparable to the other Kenzo locations.

Last Tuesday, I had my monthly 7 am meeting with a bunch of technical writing peers from around the world. It's quite the meeting that typically lasts for four hours. Luckily, we ended earlier than usual. It meant that my workday ended at around 3:30 pm. It was perfect, as I had a concert to attend several hours later. Normally, I don't do dinner before a concert. I grab a quick bite to each before I head downtown. This time, since I was done work early, I felt that having an early dinner was worthwhile. I drove downtown and parked in a lot that seems to be my usual spot whenever I'm attending a concert at Massey Hall. My original plan was to find an eatery close to the concert venue. I spotted Hokkaido Ramen Santouka steps away. I wanted ramen! I walked in and there was a sign that said to wait. I had no wait time. A woman and the entire staff greeted me. I asked for a table for me and got one. It was great. Seating between tables and diners is close together. You definitely overhear conversations and you can't help it. The man next to me had stretched his foot under my table. I didn't notice that he was in my space until I uncrossed my leg and my foot hit his. I listened to two friends next to me. The man seemed to take charge over what he and his female friend should eat, which was interesting. He gave the impression that he was an expert until the server came over and he had a ton of questions. It's always fun being an observer and listener. I had no choice but to listen to her dating experiences. I got a menu. I knew what I wanted. My server came over and was ready to take my order. I got these items: - Diet Coke - Miso chachu ramen, with bamboo shoot held - Jammy egg and corn as extra toppings The menu doesn't tell you what ingredients you get in each type of ramen. However, it does come with a photo. I asked how large a large bowl of ramen was. My server was great pointing up to a display of three bowls. I went large. The photo indicated that my miso ramen had bamboo shoots. I'm not a fan of them, so I asked that they be omitted. I also added a jammy egg and corn. I got a cold can of Diet Coke. A frosted glass with ice accompanied it. I was happy. I love an icy cold drink. This one was excellent. I loved that it was extra cold. My bowl of ramen had arrived. I was excited to dive in. My miso chachu ramen was delicious. The miso flavour was on point. I drank most of the broth, which speaks volumes on how yummy it was. The chachu was tender and had the best balance of pork and fattiness. The number of slices was generous. The ramen was chewy and perfectly done. I loved the corn and jammy egg. I probably wouldn't have enjoyed my ramen without these two key toppings. They worked nicely with the green onions. What prevents me from giving this place a perfect rating is flagging a server to get me water, or to frankly flag any staffer for something, such as ordering dessert or getting the bill. It took effort and hand-waving to get their attention. It took two tries to get a glass of water with ice. I was happy when I got some after I had finished my Diet Coke. It was equally as cold and yummy. I ordered dessert. The menu is stuck on each table. I asked what ice cream flavours were available. There were two flavours and I went with matcha. It was rich, creamy, and full of strong matcha flavour. The scoop of ice cream was generous. I loved the small spoon, which allowed this dessert to last a lot longer. I asked for the bill. I got a payment machine. I used my credit card to pay and tip. All was great. I used the washroom before I headed over to explore the downtown area. The washrooms are downstairs. It's an older building, so accessibility is an issue. There are two single-stall washrooms. The one that I used was clean. Because it's an older building, the ceiling is low. I am just shy of six feet in height. I made it without hitting my head on the ceiling. If you are six feet and taller, you'll need to duck to make sure you don't bang your head. Staff say goodbye to you when you leave. It was a nice touch, although I don't know what they are saying to me in Japanese. They could be swearing at me and I wouldn't know. I had a wonderful experience here. If you don't mind sitting close to folks and waving your arms like a maniac to get your server's attention, come here. This ramen joint appeared as a Michelin place in 2017. I can see why. The food quality is excellent. (200)
