Ikkousha located along Queen St. W. near St. Patrick St. is a Japanese ramen shop from Hakata, the Southern part of Japan known for being the birthplace of tonkotsu ramen. I've only tried their other ramen shop 2 stores down, where chicken is the focus. This location of Ikkousha only specializes in pork tonkotsu ramen. They also have another location in Toronto near Yonge and Dundas. With worldwide locations, this ramen shop is super popular in Toronto, so much so that I was only able to try it for the first time recently. The menu has about 8 different kinds of tonkotsu ramen from their signature to shio, black garlic, or their spicy broth. There are lots of toppings you are able to add on as well as your classic side dishes like gyoza, karaage, takoyaki or rice. On the table, you are able to customize the flavour of your ramen with takana, minced garlic, ginger, ramen sauce, sesame seeds, and pepper. I stopped by Ikkousha for lunch on a Monday around 12:30pm. As a solo diner I sat by one of the seats facing the wall to the right. It does get chilly there though since the door is located around that area. Sitting down, the ordering sheet is already pre-set in front of you where you choose what ramen and side dishes you want along with what noodle texture you prefer and how salty you want your broth. I decided to get: - Signature tonkotsu ($16 - has noodles, cha-shu, black fungus, and spring onions) where I added a flavoured egg ($3) - Gyoza ($6.5 - for five pieces) Food arrived at a reasonable time. Staff were friendly and efficient. Food wise, I've actually travelled to Fukuoka, Japan before where I lined up for numerous bowls of ramen there, including the spot where it is claimed to be the birthplace of tonkotsu ramen. Let me tell you that when I had my first sip of Ikkousha broth here...it brought me right back to Fukuoka. There was a moment while I was eating lunch where I felt like I was back in Japan. The pork bone broth was creamy and rich and had that delicious depth of flavour. Happily slurping my noodles, they were cooked to my liking and the spring onions added extra flavour to the dish. Like in Fukuoka, I added several condiments to my ramen to make it more tasty and to my liking. It was a delicious bowl of ramen that I can't wait to eat again. The gyoza was great as well, the wrapper was thinner than I expected but the filling of the dumpling was tasty. Overall, if you're looking for delicious tonkotsu ramen, this is the place. Just like in Fukuoka, Japan, the flavours here are spot on. Service is efficient and it's easy to have a quick meal here if you are short on time. I definitely will be back when I'm craving tonkotsu ramen!

Great ramen spot! I got the gyoza and i normally like mine crispy all around but these were honestly the highlight of my meal. They were perfectly thin and crispy on the bottom and then soft throughout. Everything came out super fast and my server walked me through the whole ordering process. They also didn't judge me for getting noodles and broth only which is a plus! :)

The portions were huge!! Ramen was so rich and flavor. Service was quick and easy. I wish they gave more broth since the broth to ramen ratio was a bit off

If you're on the hunt for really solid tonkotsu in Toronto, Ikkousha is one of my favorites so far. The interior is very coazy with lively greetings from the staff, atmosphere alone already sets you up for a good meal. I am a big fan of the broth. It's rich, savory, and deeply porky, but it never tips into being too heavy. The portions are generous, and the chashu slices are tender, flavorful, and just fatty enough. I also love the customization options. You can choose your noodle firmness, saltiness, spice level, and add extras like an egg or more meat. And don't skip the condiments! The pickled ginger, mustard greens, and their extra ramen sauce really help brighten the bowl and add complexity. I especially loved the ginger, it cuts through the richness and keeps each bite interesting.

The food was pretty good and the service was very nice! This won't be a super detailed review because, well....it's ramen. But if you like ramen, this is the place to go! Only good for small parties, perhaps table for one or two. Amazing for solo dining, actually!

One of the better ramen in the city, not my personal favourite but I can see this being someone's. Definitely worth checking out

Absolutely delicious, high-quality ramen with rich, comforting flavors. The staff were friendly and attentive, and service was impressively fast. Everything arrived hot and fresh--exactly how ramen should be.

I've been to IKkousha several years ago but I was left with a very faint memory of their food. I decided to try it again and I found it okay. I ordered a small ramen (it was truly very small and served with a single thin slice of pork). I added a marinated egg and the total came to $20 pre tip. Our wait was very long which was understandable as it was a very small space with tightly arranged tables. The employees were very kind and kept a smile on their faces despite the dinner rush.

Came back after 3 years! Got the God Fire 3/4 and it was pretty consistent to the last time I had it. The broth was quite thick and flavourful and I upgraded to premium toppings for the extra substance. Fast and kind service!

God Fire lowest spiciness - it was good but not mindblowing

was highly recommended to us but it fell short of expectations. it was missing that umami oomph im used to. the noodles were alright. i think i prefer the wavier noodles at other ramen spots and possibly a fattier thicker slice of pork. the gyoza was really good though. crispy and juicy and not too doughy. service was attentive and friendly and it was easy to get a seat when they open on a weekday for lunch.

Great authentic ramen shop with tasty broth and noodles. I like that you can customize your ramen from the saltiness and noodle texture, and also with some side condiments. That said, I do think it's somewhat overpriced for the portion (no egg, thin slice of meat). I also found the god fire ramen to be a bit inconsistent because I got the same spicy ramen twice in two weeks and the second time was much spicier than the first time. The space is clean but a bit cramped. Great service.

I can't believe it's been like 6 years since my last review?! Time flies. It seems like just a couple years ago that Ikkousha opened up in my hood. Since Ikkousha Chicken opened up and I moved, I haven't been back since. If I'm feeling like Ikkousha, it's always chicken version. However, I felt inspired to give the original Tonkotsu a try and you know what... it's not as good as I remember, or maybe my memory is foggy since it's been years since I had Hakata ramen specifically from Ikkousha. I ordered the regular salt level and I'm writing a review here to remind myself to get the less salt version next time... if there will be a next time (I'll stick to the chicken version), because it's definitely too salty for my preference, especially if you like to add takana (pickled mustard greens) to your noods. Maybe also because in my last visit to Japan a few months ago, I've had the authentic thing in Hakata (Fukuoka) and my expectations have risen. I could hardly finish and ended up taking the noodles home to dilute to my liking and perfect after that. You know what I noticed during takeout and cooling? The broth is pretty rich, almost a third is fat. So not the most healthy. We also ordered the karaage and takoyaki and it was delicious. Anyway, service is always stellar and warm at this spot. Standard Japanese hospitality all the way. I think now it's confirmed that I'll stick to my Ikkousha Chicken Paitan next door instead but I know many who prefers the pork version more. PS - check them out for their birthday special where you get the number of dumplings equivalent to your age. I took advantage and brought my dad before and they were so enthusiastic they even took a picture and featured us.

Ikkousha Toronto delivers one of the best ramen experiences in downtown. The broth is unbelievably rich and silky -- perfectly balanced between depth and umami -- and the chashu practically melts in your mouth. The noodles are always made to your liking. The staff are warm, efficient, and make you feel welcome even when the line is out the door. If you love authentic Hakata-style tonkotsu ramen, this place is a must.

The seafood and tonkotsu broth was rich, savory, and full of flavor. It was a little too salty to drink on its own, but perfect for dipping the noodles. The only thing to note is that the cold noodles stayed quite firm even after sitting in the broth for a while, so if you prefer a softer texture, I would recommend asking for hot noodles instead. The soft-boiled egg was also really good, slightly sweet, chilled, and very flavorful. We also tried the Spicy Red Miso ramen, which was not actually very spicy and leaned a little sweet. The broth was pleasant, though my teammate felt there were so many onions and green onions that they covered some of the miso flavor. The chashu, however, was excellent, with a really nice balance of lean meat and fat without feeling greasy. The takoyaki was classic and well done, crisp on the outside, soft in the middle, with generous pieces of octopus inside. The karaage was also very solid, crispy outside and juicy inside, with a seasoning that had a clear ginger and cooking wine aroma. Overall, a very enjoyable meal, especially if you like rich broths and comforting Japanese side dishes.

My friend had the King of Kings as our server said this is one of their most popular choices. I opted for the Spicy Charsu. I asked for a level one and the lady explained that the spice level on the Charsu was a whole series of levels higher than the King of Kings. I get that . Give me the heat. Anywho, she was comfortable with giving me 0.5 but said I could make it hotter if need be. Ok, better to start smaller I guess. They put some sauce on the side which I added to my bowl. Personally I found the 0.5 a nice tingle; it was good. Made my nose run. But I'm totally getting the level 1 next time. My friend however tried a sip of my broth, spit it out and said poison poison because of the heat Mind you, his King of Kings was a level 1. Which to me tasted creamy and delicious. I love a good pork bone soup and I opted for the Spicy Charsu because of the pork bone base. I loved the broth. It was perfection. The noodles were so fresh . The portion size was enormous. I kept eating and more noodles appeared. The Charsu had an amazing flavor to it . Smoky and delicious . My friend is a larger man and even he commented on the portion size saying he would be ok with a smaller size as he was so full. Good portions for your money. We also had the Gyoza and the TakoYaki. The broth was magma red, but it was not as spicy as I thought it would be. Don't get me wrong, it was spicy but not to the point where it would warrant a warning. The spicy broth tasted like a mix of Buldak sauce and Capsaicin, but didn't have much depth. I finished my ramen, broth and all and enjoyed most of the experience. The least favorite was the chasu and the egg as chasu did not taste fresh, and I could not taste the char on them at all. The egg was over-cooked and under marinated which was disappointing. Reach ten stamps and you get a free bowl of ramen. - The chashu is excellent! My rating is 4.5 stars. I'm rounding down. Last Tuesday, I had my monthly 7 am meeting with a bunch of technical writing peers from around the world. It's quite the meeting that typically lasts for four hours. Luckily, we ended earlier than usual. It meant that my workday ended at around 3:30 pm. It was perfect, as I had a concert to attend several hours later. Normally, I don't do dinner before a concert. I grab a quick bite to each before I head downtown. This time, since I was done work early, I felt that having an early dinner was worthwhile. I drove downtown and parked in a lot that seems to be my usual spot whenever I'm attending a concert at Massey Hall. My original plan was to find an eatery close to the concert venue. I spotted Hokkaido Ramen Santouka steps away. I wanted ramen! I walked in and there was a sign that said to wait. I had no wait time. A woman and the entire staff greeted me. I asked for a table for me and got one. It was great. Seating between tables and diners is close together. You definitely overhear conversations and you can't help it. The man next to me had stretched his foot under my table. I didn't notice that he was in my space until I uncrossed my leg and my foot hit his. I listened to two friends next to me. The man seemed to take charge over what he and his female friend should eat, which was interesting. He gave the impression that he was an expert until the server came over and he had a ton of questions. It's always fun being an observer and listener. I had no choice but to listen to her dating experiences. I got a menu. I knew what I wanted. My server came over and was ready to take my order. I got these items: - Diet Coke - Miso chachu ramen, with bamboo shoot held - Jammy egg and corn as extra toppings The menu doesn't tell you what ingredients you get in each type of ramen. However, it does come with a photo. I asked how large a large bowl of ramen was. My server was great pointing up to a display of three bowls. I went large. The photo indicated that my miso ramen had bamboo shoots. I'm not a fan of them, so I asked that they be omitted. I also added a jammy egg and corn. I got a cold can of Diet Coke. A frosted glass with ice accompanied it. I was happy. I love an icy cold drink. This one was excellent. I loved that it was extra cold. My bowl of ramen had arrived. I was excited to dive in. My miso chachu ramen was delicious. The miso flavour was on point. I drank most of the broth, which speaks volumes on how yummy it was. The chachu was tender and had the best balance of pork and fattiness. The number of slices was generous. The ramen was chewy and perfectly done. I loved the corn and jammy egg. I probably wouldn't have enjoyed my ramen without these two key toppings. They worked nicely with the green onions. What prevents me from giving this place a perfect rating is flagging a server to get me water, or to frankly flag any staffer for something, such as ordering dessert or getting the bill. It took effort and hand-waving to get their attention. It took two tries to get a glass of water with ice. I was happy when I got some after I had finished my Diet Coke. It was equally as cold and yummy. I ordered dessert. The menu is stuck on each table. I asked what ice cream flavours were available. There were two flavours and I went with matcha. It was rich, creamy, and full of strong matcha flavour. The scoop of ice cream was generous. I loved the small spoon, which allowed this dessert to last a lot longer. I asked for the bill. I got a payment machine. I used my credit card to pay and tip. All was great. I used the washroom before I headed over to explore the downtown area. The washrooms are downstairs. It's an older building, so accessibility is an issue. There are two single-stall washrooms. The one that I used was clean. Because it's an older building, the ceiling is low. I am just shy of six feet in height. I made it without hitting my head on the ceiling. If you are six feet and taller, you'll need to duck to make sure you don't bang your head. Staff say goodbye to you when you leave. It was a nice touch, although I don't know what they are saying to me in Japanese. They could be swearing at me and I wouldn't know. I had a wonderful experience here. If you don't mind sitting close to folks and waving your arms like a maniac to get your server's attention, come here. This ramen joint appeared as a Michelin place in 2017. I can see why. The food quality is excellent. (200)

I noticed that they had a lunch special that included three pieces of Gyoza, which could be either pork or vegetable and then it also comes with one of their soft boiled tea eggs All for about $30 after tax and tip a little steep for a downtown lunch outside of the regular financial district, but the Ramen is so good I can't complain. The restaurant inside is everything that I still remember it to be small tight quarters but very cozy.

The black garlic ramen, veggie gyoza and Takoyaki were all savoury and fantastic. The portion sizes for price were appropriate and I ended up taking some of it home. They're all beautiful dishes on the plate. Service was friendly and quick, we were greeted, seated and served within minutes of walking in. Soon after we sat down, the restaurant filled up with other patrons which is a good sign. However I also judge a restaurant based on its cleanliness and the washrooms leave much to be desired. If a restaurant's washrooms aren't clean, it gives you a window into how dirty the kitchen and back of house are. The washrooms are in a serious need of a cleaning. There is black filth on the white doors, everything has a bit of a grime covering multiple surfaces. Overall, the food is delicious, I would return but maybe for take-out next time. Please clean your restaurant.

The food was delicious; I especially enjoyed the creamy mushroom ramen broth and veggie gyoza. The gyoza was part of a deal with one app and a pint of Sapporo for 14.99 ^^ The atmosphere inside was super Christmasy! The staff were all friendly and attentive :) I would come back again!
