We both ordered the special where you can get black garlic ramen and the five piece veggie gyoza for 16.95. This is such a good deal and we had leftovers to take home. The ramen was average, and the gyoza came with a sweet and sour dipping sauce. The black garlic topping on the ramen was drizzled over the chashu, it provided a smoky flavor. Presentation is nice but the taste is pretty average. This is a very busy casual restaurant but we were able to get a seat with a reservation during rush hour. Service is pretty no frills.

Got the Tonkotsu Miso Ramen. Pretty decent bowl of ramen but I felt like the broth was missing something. Good place for someone needing a hot bowl of ramen on a cold day. Staff were friendly and ambiance was good. Also tried their mango cheesecake which was alright. Their Gyoza tasted average as well.

I got their tomato dipping ramen which is part of their summer menu for $14.95. I liked the texture of the chewy ramen but I wish the dipping broth was hotter since the noodles were pretty cold. The dipping broth came lukewarm and by the end of my meal it was cold - flavour is good though. The service is good - the servers are all very nice. This is next to another popular ramen spot which we wanted to go to but there was a lineup so we ended up here. This is a good place to go for some quick ramen but probably would not be my first choice.

Came here on a weekday evening for dinner after work and I had the black garlic ramen which I was super excited for but left disappointed. The ramen came out super quickly, even before our takoyaki which felt quite suspicious. The noodles weren't as chewy nor did they taste fresh compared to other ramen restaurants I been. I did like the takoyaki and my friend enjoyed the veggie ramen which she finished completely. Service was OK but did notice they put the tipping option on the 20% option instead of the 15% default.

Yes I would return.... Great Japanese inspired food and drinks. The beef tartar was amazing and so were the nori tacos. I topped it all off with a "sour" type drink which I don't remember the name of, but it was great. The service was great since the waiter was chatty and had good recommendations. He had actually lived in Japan, which is a bonus.

Came here with a couple of friends after attending an expo nearby. My friends ordered ramen, but I wasn't in a soupy mood, so I chose Katsu instead. I was NOT disappointed at all. The Katsu here rivals Katsuya for sure! We also got croquet, which were delicious! And a complimentary Gyoza because my friend ordered the special. Everything was good and the servers were really nice.

Tomato ramen was decent, though again the egg was slightly over cooked. The pork was odd, like it was made from pork chunks pressed together. The pork also didn't taste of much.

Got the summer special which was the hot and sour ramen for about $15. The broth was on the thicker side and the "sour" taste made itnrefreshing to eat. Seevice could have been better because the one waiter disappeared for moments on end that the cook even went over to call him out to get our requests.

I have been to Touheboku before but it's been long enough to now have a fresh impression to give a detailed review after my recent visit! I ordered the shio ramen made from a chicken broth base. The broth itself is very flavourful and creamy! It came with green onions, wood ear mushrooms, an egg, and a slice of pork belly and pork shoulder. The pork slices were nothing extraordinary, I felt the shoulder was quite dry while the belly had more flavour due to the fat. I know typically everything is assembled but I was disappointed that the egg and mushrooms were so noticeably cold despite being in soup. I could tell they were in the refrigerator and taken out seconds before assembly. The egg was alright as well, it wasn't as flavourful due to being marinated or as jammy compared to other spots in the city. The noodles had bite and enjoyed that they were thinner! There is only one portion size here and felt there could've been more broth added for the price. Overall it was a comforting dish but really could've been elevated from the few observations above! Service was fine however they did bring our food out quickly which I appreciated. This is a fair option if, like us, you're craving ramen and this is the only spot open and close by.

The ramen and soup base is good but portions are a bit small. There is no bad aftertaste or any water requirement after my meal. They are taking precautions for covid and are also offering 50% discount for ramen during this tough time.

I came here on a busy Saturday evening but was able to be seated right away. The restaurant is definitely on the smaller size so it's not great for large groups and can feel kind of cramped. My husband ordered the spicy creamy mushroom ramen and I got the spicy miso ramen. The waitress suggested we get the spicy sauce on the side and we are sure glad that we listened! We both love spicy food but man, the spicy sauce packed a punch. I was only able to handle half of the sauce provided and my mouth was on fire by the end of the meal. Definitely still delicious though. The servers were friendly, attentive and accomodating. Parking can be a pain as there is only street parking. However, the restaurant is only a short walk away from Osgoode subway station so it's accessible by TTC.

Picked up the Takayoki to go and they were amazing all the way through. Just based off that, I know I have to return and try their ramen

Touhenboku - Black Garlic Ramen: chicken broth, sea salt, pork shoulder, wood ear mushroom, and soft egg with thick noodles.
    Mike H.

Over the past few years, ramen shops seem have become a big part of the Toronto food scene. Anything Japanese food-related tend to be popular. It's nice that those who've trained overseas are sharing their culinary skills here. Heck, there are now three ramen shops within 90m on the vibrant Queen/University stretch. First of three lunch stops, I came to try Tohenboku Ramen Restaurant which was well-reviewed on a YouTube video. They offered a creamy "toripaitan-style" soup composed of slow-cooked chicken broth. Surprisingly the restaurant was nearly packed at noon time, so I grabbed seating by the kitchen to watch the chef duo go to work and share tasks to create each bowl. Service was minimal like other ramen shops, with servers tied up taking orders, food or bills. Black Garlic Ramen had a nice touch of sea salt, tender pork shoulder slices, and the usual wood ear mushroom & soft egg. Thick bouncy noodles paired well with the rich soup base. The portion size was just enough, although a little more ramen would've been ideal. A solid lunch bowl but not sure if I'll return soon with so many similar options nearby.

My friend had the King of Kings as our server said this is one of their most popular choices. I opted for the Spicy Charsu. Now I understand some people can't handle heat but I live off of Purple Tongue hot sauce which is made with some pretty hot peppers. I asked for a level one and the lady explained that the spice level on the Charsu was a whole series of levels higher than the King of Kings. I get that . Give me the heat. Anywho, she was comfortable with giving me 0.5 but said I could make it hotter if need be. Ok, better to start smaller I guess. They put some sauce on the side which I added to my bowl. Personally I found the 0.5 a nice tingle; it was good. Made my nose run. But I'm totally getting the level 1 next time. My friend however tried a sip of my broth, spit it out and said poison poison because of the heat Mind you, his King of Kings was a level 1. Which to me tasted creamy and delicious. I love a good pork bone soup and I opted for the Spicy Charsu because of the pork bone base. I loved the broth. It was perfection. The noodles were so fresh . The portion size was enormous. I kept eating and more noodles appeared. The Charsu had an amazing flavor to it . Smoky and delicious . My friend is a larger man and even he commented on the portion size saying he would be ok with a smaller size as he was so full. Good portions for your money. We also had the Gyoza and the TakoYaki. The TakoYaki was soft and loaded with the delicious sauce. The Gyoza were enormous. We were both 100% satisfied with our visit and will be back for sure.

The concerned server told me that it may be painful, but being the chili head that I am, I gladly took on the challenge. It was a larger bowl than their regular size and my ramen came topped with lots of corn, some mushrooms, bean sprouts and 6 large pieces of chasu. The broth was magma red, but it was not as spicy as I thought it would be. Don't get me wrong, it was spicy but not to the point where it would warrant a warning. The spicy broth tasted like a mix of Buldak sauce and Capsaicin, but didn't have much depth. I finished my ramen, broth and all and enjoyed most of the experience. The least favorite was the chasu and the egg as chasu did not taste fresh, and I could not taste the char on them at all. The egg was over-cooked and under marinated which was disappointing. It's still one of the few ramen options in Durham but can't say it's comparable to the other Kenzo locations.

Last Tuesday, I had my monthly 7 am meeting with a bunch of technical writing peers from around the world. It's quite the meeting that typically lasts for four hours. Luckily, we ended earlier than usual. It meant that my workday ended at around 3:30 pm. It was perfect, as I had a concert to attend several hours later. Normally, I don't do dinner before a concert. I grab a quick bite to each before I head downtown. This time, since I was done work early, I felt that having an early dinner was worthwhile. I drove downtown and parked in a lot that seems to be my usual spot whenever I'm attending a concert at Massey Hall. My original plan was to find an eatery close to the concert venue. I spotted Hokkaido Ramen Santouka steps away. I wanted ramen! I walked in and there was a sign that said to wait. I had no wait time. A woman and the entire staff greeted me. I asked for a table for me and got one. It was great. Seating between tables and diners is close together. You definitely overhear conversations and you can't help it. The man next to me had stretched his foot under my table. I didn't notice that he was in my space until I uncrossed my leg and my foot hit his. I listened to two friends next to me. The man seemed to take charge over what he and his female friend should eat, which was interesting. He gave the impression that he was an expert until the server came over and he had a ton of questions. It's always fun being an observer and listener. I had no choice but to listen to her dating experiences. I got a menu. I knew what I wanted. My server came over and was ready to take my order. I got these items: - Diet Coke - Miso chachu ramen, with bamboo shoot held - Jammy egg and corn as extra toppings The menu doesn't tell you what ingredients you get in each type of ramen. However, it does come with a photo. I asked how large a large bowl of ramen was. My server was great pointing up to a display of three bowls. I went large. The photo indicated that my miso ramen had bamboo shoots. I'm not a fan of them, so I asked that they be omitted. I also added a jammy egg and corn. I got a cold can of Diet Coke. A frosted glass with ice accompanied it. I was happy. I love an icy cold drink. This one was excellent. I loved that it was extra cold. My bowl of ramen had arrived. I was excited to dive in. My miso chachu ramen was delicious. The miso flavour was on point. I drank most of the broth, which speaks volumes on how yummy it was. The chachu was tender and had the best balance of pork and fattiness. The number of slices was generous. The ramen was chewy and perfectly done. I loved the corn and jammy egg. I probably wouldn't have enjoyed my ramen without these two key toppings. They worked nicely with the green onions. What prevents me from giving this place a perfect rating is flagging a server to get me water, or to frankly flag any staffer for something, such as ordering dessert or getting the bill. It took effort and hand-waving to get their attention. It took two tries to get a glass of water with ice. I was happy when I got some after I had finished my Diet Coke. It was equally as cold and yummy. I ordered dessert. The menu is stuck on each table. I asked what ice cream flavours were available. There were two flavours and I went with matcha. It was rich, creamy, and full of strong matcha flavour. The scoop of ice cream was generous. I loved the small spoon, which allowed this dessert to last a lot longer. I asked for the bill. I got a payment machine. I used my credit card to pay and tip. All was great. I used the washroom before I headed over to explore the downtown area. The washrooms are downstairs. It's an older building, so accessibility is an issue. There are two single-stall washrooms. The one that I used was clean. Because it's an older building, the ceiling is low. I am just shy of six feet in height. I made it without hitting my head on the ceiling. If you are six feet and taller, you'll need to duck to make sure you don't bang your head. Staff say goodbye to you when you leave. It was a nice touch, although I don't know what they are saying to me in Japanese. They could be swearing at me and I wouldn't know. I had a wonderful experience here. If you don't mind sitting close to folks and waving your arms like a maniac to get your server's attention, come here. This ramen joint appeared as a Michelin place in 2017. I can see why. The food quality is excellent. (200)
