Came back here on my most recent BC trip to try more items and it was still as amazing as I remembered. We ordered the liangpi, saliva chicken, and big plate chicken as well. Everything was good but the saliva chicken was definitely the main highlight. We could not stop eating it! Must get here!

I went with friend to Jookak after craving some Biang Biang noodles. We were greeted by a lovely woman (who I presume is the owner) who promptly seated us in the cozy space. She offered some great suggestions about the menu and we took almost all of them. The wontons were delicious and the broth was amazing. The Xian burgers were flavourful with a good pastry. The noodles were great, but the base was a little soupier than I would have liked, I plan to get the chilli oil version next time. I highly recommend you check out this neighbourhood gem.

Great and friendly service, it was our first time here and the server walked us through the menu and some recommendations. Xian Chinese food that specializes in hand pulled, thick cut noodles. The noodles, lamb burger and dumplings (also made in house) were flavourful and delicious. The chili oil available on the table was a good compliment to the dishes. It's a small restaurant with only a handful of tables so we had to wait around 10 minutes for a table on a Sunday night.

Xi'an style Chinese has become one of my favourite discoveries of the last year. Joojak stands above the rest! Not only is the food superb, but the owner, Regina, is the sweetest woman ever, and makes everyone feel welcome. If it's your first time there she will patiently explain the menu to you. And what a menu! You have to try "Saliva chicken". That's actually a mangled translation of "mouth watering chicken", not actually made with saliva! Tender poached chicken (almost like Hainan chicken) in an incredible sauce. The hand pulled noodles are fantastic, and the seasoned ground lamb on a soft white bun ( think taco with thick fluffy char Sui bai pastry instead of tortilla) is out of this word. Great handmade dumplings too! Been there twice this summer and can't to go back again. Strongly recommend this little hole in the wall on Kingsway. Oh, did i mention the truly excellent chilli oil?

Solid Northern style Chinese place on Kingsway. Chairman Mao would be proud. Parking is available on the side streets, as well as at metered spots on Kingsway. The inside is pretty bare bones and dated. Looks like a mom and pop shop. This place takes an unofficial "break" between 1500-1630, which isn't shown on the business hours outside. With that said, the waitress still served me even though I showed up at 1500. A bunch of customers also showed up after me but they were also seated and served. I guess it depends on the mood of the staff. Just something to keep in mind in case you show up during that window and find the place closed. The noodle soup I had was pretty solid. Portion was a wee bit small, but it was tasty. There are different noodle options. I would recommend the thick one (Xian style biang biang) for the authentic experience. I've been told this place has a lot of other good dishes as well. Guess I'll have to be come back a few more times. Just wish their hours were a bit better. Recommended.

This unassuming hidden gem is serving up some tasty dishes from the capital of Shaanxi province, Xi'an. What you'll get are flavours of salty, vinegar and heat. Known for their Biangbiang noodles, which are made with wheat and hand stretched and pulled, Joojak is bring traditional and delicious items that are getting more popular in the food scene. The restaurant is pretty small, so if you're thinking of going in a group larger then 6 or else you may be waiting. The staff and owner(?) are very helpful in recommending and going through the menu, in case it was your first time trying Northern Chinese cuisine. What we ordered: Steamed Chicken with Chili Sauce $12.99 Pan fried Pork and Cilantro Dumplings (12 pcs) $13.50 Hand Pulled Biang Biang Noodles with Chili Oil and Pork $12.75 Hand Pulled Spinach Noodles with Chili Oil, Tomato, Egg, and Pork $14.25 Beef Noodle in Soup $12.99 The hand pulled noodles were the star of the table for sure. The fragrance of the chili oil mixed with the minced pork over the stretchy noodles were fantastic! The long pulled noodles are thin yet chewy and hot chili oil over top really made the dish special. Also chili oil doesn't really mean spicy. Its more flavor with a kick at the end. Nothing at all like Nashville hot. The Steamed Chicken with Chili Sauce was okay... like 6/10 (IMO). The spice level on it was a bit hotter then the noodles, but the pickled vegetables cut through the chili oil, presenting a good balance between the heat and slight vinegar of the dish. I also really enjoyed the hand made dumplings. The skin was thin and crispy and the filling was flavourful. 10/10 would order again. If cilantro isn't your thing, then they also have a chive or celery version. If you're not into spice, do get the Beef Noodle Soup. Its hardy and makes the belly warm. I just find that after eating all these flavourful spiced foods, my palate finds the Beef Noodle Soup too bland. Overall Joojak on Kingways has some of the best Biang Biang noodles I've had in Vancouver. You can always find some where great to eat even if its super unassuming.

Went to joojak and everything was so good! I got the saliva chicken, xian cold noodle with sesame paste, and biang biang noodles with pork. My favourite was the cold noodles, I loved the sesame combo with chilli oil Our server was so nice even tho it was really busy, I would definitely go back to try their other dishes!

First time trying, we ordered #1 Chinese burger #7 beef wrap #17 mixed veggie noodles & #35 mouth watering chicken for pick up Taste 1/1* Wife enjoyed the Chinese burger, whereas I personally found it underwhelming as it wasn't balanced, all I could taste was salty pulled pork and baked plain bun Beef wrap on the other hand was pretty tasty, though small portions, it's one of the better ones we've had, well balanced with good amount of spring onion and hoisin sauce Veggie noodles were tasty, wife liked it, I prefer my noods more Al Dan te, though I understand it could've gotten soft due to the travel time Chicken...mmm mmm mmm, one of the tastiest mouth watering chicken we've had, again small portion, and slight disappointment when we found pickled veggies underneath (aka even less chicken than we first thought), the taste and aroma was amazing once you get past the introduction of vinegar Value 0.5/1* Kind of torn on this one, as most portions were definitely lacking, some dishes taste made up for it Service 1/1* Friendly, and always nice seeing owners/chefs who take pride in their work Cleanliness 0.5/1* Looked like things could be cleaner Overall/Revisit 0/1* Would not return for the same dishes, but would consider going back to try other dishes if given the opportunity Paying for ambience? Above and beyond? 0/+1*

    Steamed Chicken with chilli oil

Good food and great service! From when we first sat, the server immediately recommended some of the best dishes to order. - Steamed Chicken with Chili Oil - the server highly recommended this so we decided to order it and it definitely did not disappoint. It was sooo good. Kind of reminded me of Hainanese chicken since it was also a cold dish but the flavour profile is very different. It's definitely a must try! - Spinach Hand Pulled Noodles with chilli oil and pork: We picked this since it was something we've never had before. We finished it so fast that we didn't get to take a picture of it anymore. This was supposed to be the last thing we were going to order but we loved the noodles so we decided to order another noodle dish. - Xian Cold Noodle: Another yummy dish. I just really like how thick and chewy their noodles are. Overall, everything we had was delicious and affordable. We would definitely come back and recommend anyone to try it.

Sometimes good, but highly inconsistent. One day, the mapo tofu is more intense ma la flavor than you can find anywhere else in Vancouver and the next day it will be spicy but with zero ma la flavor. It's also fairly pricey for the portion size. Some of the dishes (like the lamb burger) are bad for take-out or delivery because they'll get soggy and this place doesn't pack them up in a way to prevent that. This place isn't bad for some variety every once in a while if you're in the neighborhood, but it's not worth making a trip for.

    Stir Fried Green Beans (vegetarian/vegan)
    Matt B.

Middle-of-the-road Northern Chinese food, with some OK vegetarian options, but overall, portions are small, so it's not great value. There are many better places in Vancouver for this type of food. Having noticed they had a bunch of vegetarian options on their menu, we decided to try them out for dinner. We ordered the Hand Pulled Biang Biang Noodles with Chili Oil ($10.75), Stir Fried Green Beans ($14.99), and the Bean Curd with Green Pepper ($14.99). The portions were all quite small - the same $ gets you much bigger portions at most Chinese restaurants in Vancouver. The food was decently tasty, but fairly ordinary and lacking much depth. By dish: -Hand Pulled Biang Biang Noodles with Chili Oil - the thick noodles had a slightly firm and chewy texture, and were served with 3-4 small pieces of bok choy, a tiny bit of bean sprouts, and plenty of chili oil. Tiny portion that is bordering on insulting. 2.5/5 -Stir fried green beans - nicely cooked green beans, with plenty of flavour, adequate saltiness, but not really any spiciness. Solid enough but there are way better green bean dishes out there. Portion was fairly small once again. 3/5 -Bean Curd with Green Pepper - I really liked the very firm thinly-sliced tofu - the texture was great. The dish is served with only green peppers (used to be red peppers - that would've been better). There isn't much spice or flavour to the dish, so it is on the bland side. Luckily, I had asked for homemade chili oil that really livens the dish up. 2.5/5 All in all, pretty middle-of-the-road Northern Chinese food. I don't understand the high ratings here really. Have they really not discovered the many superior versions of this all around Vancouver? For reference, check out Happy Noodle House, Dan Dan Noodles (West End), NoodleArts (West End), Peaceful (most locations), Yu Xiang Yang, Grand Chinese, etc.

A Gastronomic Awakening in Chinatown! You don't truly know…read moreuntil you go--and now that I've been, I'm haunted. As I write this, I am literally still dreaming of the Hong Kong Style BBQ Pork. It didn't just "eat" well; it dissolved into a decadent, sweet, fatty puddle of pure bliss. Walking in, the vibe is quintessential Chinatown: a bustling counter, a glass case showcasing glistening roasted treasures, and a seating area that trades fancy decor for pure, functional authenticity. We were clearly out of our element, probably looking like deer in headlights, but the staff met our confusion with warm smiles. Then came Bobby--the absolute heart and soul of this place. We walked in expecting the standard American-Chinese routine, but Bobby whisked us away to a cozy table and treated us like family. He started us off with a fragrant jasmine tea so naturally sweet and floral it didn't need a grain of sugar--perfect for a biting winter night. While we flirted with the Happy Hour menu, Bobby took the reins. You don't say no to a man with that much charisma and passion! On his expert recommendation, we pivoted to the Two-Meat Combo (BBQ Pork + Soy Chicken) with a side of their famous Roast Duck. The food arrived in a lightning-fast 10 minutes, but the real treat was Bobby's play-by-play on how each dish was prepared. You can taste the pride in every bite. The balance was masterclass: a symphony of sweet, salty, and umami. The meats were succulent, the skins were shattery-crisp, and the glazes were perfectly sticky. The undisputed heavyweight champion, however, was that Hong Kong BBQ Pork. Imagine the best "burnt ends" of your life, drenched in a caramelized, mouth-watering sauce that demands your full attention. We left Chinatown BBQ feeling more than just sated--we felt enlightened. If you're looking for a "one in a million" meal, let Bobby order for you. You won't regret it.

With about 9-10 people per table, we were treated to what felt like at least ten courses. There wasn't much time for photos, as conversation and catching up naturally took precedence. The standouts were the seafood fried rice and the green onion lobster and crab stir-fry -- rich, comforting, and generously flavoured, the kind of dishes that quietly anchor a long meal. It was a busy holiday weekend, and the restaurant was packed. Our original 7:00 p.m. reservation was delayed until 8:00 p.m., leaving many of us waiting outside in the cold. Once seated, the pacing felt off, with dishes arriving out of sequence, which gave the meal an oddly disjointed rhythm. A small apology or update from the staff would have been welcome, but none came. Overall, the food was very tasty, and I would consider returning -- particularly to explore more of their seafood offerings.
