I love visiting mom and pop shops and Preference Noodle House fits the bill. The food is good, the place is clean and the service is friendly. We ordered 3 things: Beef Fried Rice Noodle - lots of crunchy onions, green onions, bean sprouts with a decent amount of beef. Beef Potato Rice Lunch Special - comes with beef and potatoes of course, stir fried green peppers, onions and carrots. They also give you a side bowl of hot & sour soup. All good with no complaints. Pork in Spicy Garlic Sauce - The star of our meal. So spicy and full of flavor. The pork slices are on top of some bean sprouts so after eating a few slices, you can have some sprouts to change up the texture. Tiny restaurant with the fancy menu books. I found a parking spot on the side lot after zipping past the free street parking. We ordered the eggplant lunch special, chicken with Shanghai noodles and their special pork wrap. Portions were generous and they didn't skimp on the meats. Everything had good "wok hay". The first impression that I got from this small Chinese restaurant is their great food. The interior design is extremely Chinese that they hang some red Chinese lanterns outside the restaurant. Decorations inside the restaurant are also in red and a very Chinese style. The hard copy of the menu is very beautiful with a hard cover. The only concerns that I had when I was reviewing the menu are the pictures without descriptions. I did not know what the pictures were referring to which dishes of food listed on the menu. Two of us ordered a dish of cold appetizer which was some jelly fish and carrots and cucumbers. The main course was a dish of fried noodles with lamb with satay sauce. The food tasted excellent. The noodles were chewy; the lamb tasted great with the satay sauce; and the tea tasted good as well. I saw other dishes of food at other customers' tables. They all looked delicious! The pricing of the food here was average. It would be better if I came here with more friends, so we could share the food. There is no parking in front of the restaurant. This restaurant serves mainly northern Chinese food. My family decided to give this place a try as it was something different from our typical choices for Chinese food. Prices are reasonable and portion sizes are good for the price. We ordered hot and sour soup, long bean with minced pork, chicken fried noodles, deep fried chicken nuggets on fried rice, and cumin beef. We were the only customers at the beginning of our meal so we received our order fairly quickly. Service was minimal in that we placed our order, received a pot of tea and food was dropped off at our table. The flavours of the food was good without being too salty or full of MSG. There was more than enough food for five adults. Overall, this was a 3.5 star experience. I would consider coming back if I am in the area as the food was pretty good. read more

Fresh made noodles, delicious sauce, friendly staff, need I say more? I checked this place out for a quick bite after shopping at Metrotown and it is only a short distance away. It's located in a pretty empty strip mall so there is plenty of parking. It is a family owned restaurant and it was nice that I had a chance to chat with them as they are from a similar region of China as my family. They are proud of their food and most things are made from scratch on site! I tend to only get small bites like noodles but they also have larger Chinese dishes as well. The noodles are perfectly cooked with nice flavour and the texture has the hallmark of made made noodles. Definitely worth checking out if you're in the area for some authentic delicious noodles! I haven't tried the larger dishes but I suspect they're also delicious. read more

Food comes out as it is complete so one person may get their meal 10 minutes before another - with various dishes being served to other tables in between. The noodles were very fresh and tasty. We had the pork and vegetable noodle soup, tofu with mushrooms and cabbage (spicy) and vegetables and stir fried noodles. The soup was full of lots of vegetables, noodles and pork. The vegetable stir fry lacked flavor and the vegetables consisted of bean sprouts, onions, scallion tops and four pieces of broccoli. A real disappointment. Arrived on a Friday night at 7:30pm and the place was half occupied. Wanted to try the beef noodle soup after reading reviews and I wasn't disappointed. We ordered Noodle in spicy beef soup, beef shank and tripe with spicy sauce, and beef fried noodle with satay sauce for two people. The beef and tripe appetizer was good, a bit oily by the end of it but the mix of spicy oil with cilantro and Asian celery was well done. The noodle is spicy beef soup was very good. The noodles stayed chewy to the last bite. The fried noodles were also good. The noodles used were chewy and well flavoured with the veggies and meat. Portions of the food was good value for money. Anyways, a young chap came by to take our order and serves us. In between he is just looking at his phone. Kitchen service: we ordered the spicy eggplant and beef noodle soup at 8:23pm and the noodle came at 8:29pm while the eggplant came at 8:33pm. Taste, Portion, Price: both dishes have less ingredients than other similar restaurants like their only winning combo is their lunch specials that is around $8 per dish. Thirst taste: we were not always reaching for water after the dinner. Overall: with so many similar restaurants in the area, we are likely not going to come back. Literally a whole in the wall, you probably drive by a million times and never notice this place. The flavors are amazing each dish with their own unique robust flavor. Lettuce is just lettuce right....I don't know how or why but the lettuce (romaine) simply stir fried with garlic was blow my mind amazing. Lettuce !!!! I could eat the entire plate myself. The pork in a special amazing sauce, you wrap the pork in a very thin dough patty with cucumber and green onions....ummmmm YUM !!!! Hot and sour soup no complaints. Fried rice above average. I should start by saying that when it comes to going out for Asian noodles in soup, Taiwanese beef noodles is by far my least favorite. Having tried Lao Shan Dong, Ali Shan, and Huang's Beef Noodle, I've always found that I would have prefered to have gone for ramen, pho, or going to those build-your-own-noodle restaurants like Deer Garden. Despite this, I tagged along with some friends when they decided to go out for lunch at Preference Noodle House. I have to say, the food here far exceeded my expectations. I ordered the Fish and Pickled Veggie Noodles in soup and would highly recommend it. The soup base was a mix of spicy and sour, which worked really well. I would definitely order this again. This place was really close to the Airbnb we were staying at. This was our first time in Canada and we were incredibly hungry after all the traveling. We found this place on yelp and have gone back again since our first visit. The staff at the restaurant are incredibly nice and patient. They gave us barley tea, which was wonderful in the cool weather. We ordered our food and got large helpings of rice. We had leftovers for additional meals. Everything is incredibly flavorful and authentic! It's amazing how they are able to cook so many varieties of dishes in such a short amount of time and everything tasting so incredible. This may not be typical, but because we were told that our American credit cards would be accepted everywhere in Canada, my family and I didn't immediately exchange our money. We went to the restaurant and ordered without thinking about whether they accepted our cards, but when it came time to pay I started to panic because the owner said he accepted Canadian cards or cash. He was so incredibly kind and honest about the situation. Even though it took him extra time, he did the exchange rate and did not take a single penny more. Other than that, we ordered spicy garlic pork (蒜泥白肉) and minced pork noodles 擔擔麵 and they were very just okay. The taste was pretty blend. We finished up and were about to pay. On yelp and in their store it says they accept credit card. So we gave them a Chase VISA card from America. They rejected it because they said the transaction fee on their side is too large and they won't take it. We told them we didn't have any cash on us and will add extra tip to cover the extra cost on their side. The owner did not budge at all. He insisted he cannot accept anything other than a LOCAL CANADIAN card or cash. It was raining heavily outside and we were obviously travelers. Not appreciated... I would save yourself the trouble and avoid this place. My bf and I ended up splitting up and my bf went to try and find an ATM to get cash. They need to update their information at least in the store so that they don't mislead people. read more

This place is like a diamond in the rough for noodle soup. Their broths are rich and flavourful, and the noodles which I am guessing are made from scratch in-house are the perfect texture and springiness. How we could have existed off of the noodle soup in Bubble World or Bubble88 or the other Taiwanese bubble variations I'm not quite sure. Their deep fried fish was crisp and the fried rice was smoky, a little greasy, but delicious. Their chicken nuggets were juicy but crunchy, with a better flavor than that of bubble world. This place is amazing and has huge portions, and we'll be back to try other things, along with more noodles! As for the ambiance: its small and tiny, a little run down, but that's perfectly OK with me - I'm here for the food. Parking is a nightmare in the back with the snow and other customers who don't understand the concept of parking. This small restaurant is clean family owned husband is server and wife the chef. Reasonably priced. Friendly service. The northern Shan dong cuisine is worth trying. Washroom was surprisingly decent for a Chinese restaurant. Food we had the stir fry pork with Cucumber and wrap, reminds me of Pekingng duck wrap definitely worth trying. Fried rice noodles with your choice of meat we chose lamb and it comes with onions sprouts and green onion $13. Check out the lunch special items in the front part of menu $8 chili oil eggplant little bit of ground pork and rice bowl. It comes with corn soup I didn't like drinking at all ( need improvement). Next we had beef noodle soup 5 spice not worth $9, very little beef slices. Soup base was not anything special. We had a bowl of noodle soup with fish and pickled vegetables, and a plate of fried rice with fried chicken. They're relatively simple dishes, but were still delicious, were served in generous portions, and did not dehydrate me with excessive saltiness or clog my arteries with excessive oiliness. Service was also quick, and the establishment had surprisingly good ventilation, given that little Chinese joints like this usually make you smell like the kitchen after spending as little as 10 minutes in the restaurant. As I made my way to the cashier to pay, I contemplated whether or not I would rate this place four or five stars. Upon presenting my credit card to pay for my $24.11 meal, I was told that they only accept cash or debit card as payment. No surprise there; most little joints like this haven't yet figured out that offering customers the option to pay by credit card would increase sales much more than enough to cover the fees associated with credit card machines. Whatever, I had cash anyway - exactly $25. They'd have to settle for an $0.89 tip. I handed the owner the $20 and $5 bills, thanked him, and turned to leave when he asked if everything was OK. I said that it was. He asked, "No tip?" I asked, "You are ASKING me for a tip?!" He replied by mumbling something along the lines of "Oh, never mind, you don't give...mumble... mumble...mumble". I fished about my pockets and managed to find a toonie, which I placed on the money tray and then said, "A customer chooses if he wants to tip, and how much he wants to tip. You don't ASK for a tip." The owner replied by saying he understood. I said, "By the way, it was delicious", to which the owner sarcastically replied with thanks. I'm not going to make this review about tipping culture or the proper mannerisms around tipping. One thing, however, is for sure: a service provider should not be questioning a customer's choice around tipping, especially when he chooses to limit the customer's payment methods. If we get back to what this is really about - food, service, and value - then this place definitely deserves for four stars. Absolutely love this place. Everything I tried here is 5/5, reasonably priced with relatively large portions. I've tried the following: Spicy pork ear Noodle in Spicy Beef Soup Shrimp fried rice Lamb with cumin powder Eggplant with mince pork in garlic & chili sauce Sticky rice ball in rice wine - This dessert is very similar to what I often had as a child. The rice balls are sweet and the soup base is this mild, sweet rice wine. I've only found this dish in one other restaurant in Vancouver. So far, from what I've tried, the dishes are authentic and done to perfection (in my opinion). Nothing is either over or under-cooked, and the seasoning is neither too much nor not enough. To cater to the general population and make dishes easier to find, the spicy and non-spicy dishes are separated in the menu. I would definitely be back and I'd love to work my way through the menu. Ambiance wise, the restaurant is a bit cramped, without much decoration or seating. It's hidden away and easy to miss, and there is only street parking nearby. read more

I should have trusted my instincts. The restaurant was empty at 2pm on a weekday. Went in and asked if it was open. The old Asian guy with an attitude firmly states it was open. Ordered the beef noodle soup. There were 5 tiny chunks of beef brisket. They were chewy, lack flavor and very dry eventhough they were submerge in the spicy soup. The old man (most likely the owner) looks like Chairman Mao but with a bigger attitude. After bringing my noodle, I had to ask for chopsticks. He went on and had his staff meal. They eat without exchanging one word, but the whole time, I can here Mao eating, chewing and sucking loudly. After eating, he did not wash or wipe his disgusting hands and face, just returned to his little front counter and continue with his video. I paid the exact amount on the bill. He ask "no tip"? These China mainlanders never tip in China and probably never care to learn the concept of gratuity. Yet they open a crappy noodle stand in Burnaby, and without any service, smile and/or friendly attitude, expect a 15% tip on top of the menu price that he personally sets. In response to his "no tip", I was going to suggest he lick my butt first. But he was shameless and may agree. We really enjoyed our experience at this restaurant. Excellent tasting food, good sizing of portions and if you want spice they will make it as spicy as you want. My wife is from Beijing and of course the more spicy the better. This place competes with any restaurant in Beijing or Taiwan. The new menu is large and has a great variety of both Chinese and Taiwanese dishes. We had Beijing style pork, fish in chilli sauce and bean starch sheet in chilli sauce. All were excellent. BEWARE OF THEIR PAYMENT OPTIONS. They won't tell you until you are ready to pay that THEY DONT ACCEPT ANYthing except for Canadian Credit cards or Canadian currency. We found it absurd of course and even felt like it is a scam...we had no Canadian credit cards nor Canadian money, with current USD-Canadian dollar at 1-1.26 exchange rate, owner offered to accept our US dollar at 1-1 given such excuse that he doesn't want to deal the exchange rate...long story cut short, we had to pay in USD at the 1-1 rate at the end... Service is definitely minimal if any. We ordered quite a variety of food...their wontons are pretty good and portion is pretty big which is what my 1 star stands for. Their beef shank and tripe seem stale if not too dried, flavor is ok. I would avoid their salted/picked long bean w ground pork, it is too soggy. I had Hunan style of salted beans before, I know it is different than Sechuan style which I prefer. Flavor is not right, they might have picked the long beans too long. I also ordered a lemon chicken for my 9 yr O, it came out in pieces like dark meant nuggets instead of the white meat 1 piece then cut in pieces. We ordered stirred fried iceberg lettuce, they gave us Romain lettuce. The strawberry banana shake came out nothing like we had but watery looking and doesn't taste right and we saw they charge us for strawberry mango shake but still it didn't taste right. Glances always indirect with attention elsewhere, he played the role like Bogart - slightly dismissive, staying in the shadow of the host station, engaged with the computer screen which has some no doubt messages of importance that needed constant attention lest some mission would be lost or in dire straits. With our party the only one in the restaurant, it must've been difficult to maintain that distractedness while waiting for the cooking timers to ring. Nonetheless, while he could not be bothered to come to the table other than to drop off the food, it was indeed of high quality, even if it was a requirement that white rice needed to be purchased - a small concession - that. The pork dishes, the tofu, the chicken - all were tasty with the three dishes easily satisfying our band of four. At the end when needing to pay, one more act needed to be played out - leave behind your AMEX because even though yelp notes they take credit cards, the don't take American Express.
