the infamous dumpling booth at the crystal mall food court. Honestly thought it wouldn't be enough portion-wise but each dumpling was massive and they're around $10-11 ish per portion. I do think colour see see near by has better dumplings tho also this location is CASH ONLY there is an atm by the food court if u need it

For 生煎馒头/生煎包 stop number two, my favorite in Vancouver: Shanghai Dimsum House. I visited once before a couple of years ago on vacation and I was so impressed that I had to revisit this trip. This food stall is located at the end of a row of other stalls, and the patrons sitting at this side of the cafeteria area all possess trays heaped high and heavy with food from this hawker stand. It's an almost vulgar display of food and bounty. Shanghai Style Pan-Fried Pork Buns (SJB) ($9.75) - This is the must get dish at Shanghai Dimsum House. Wandering in at 6 PM on a Sunday, it seemed like everyone and their mothers had plates of these exquisitely juicy bao on their tables. For the dinner rush, the employees crank these out continuously, meaning there was only a 30 second or so wait before I ordered and they were ready. One order comes with 5 pieces of some of the best SJBs outside of Asia. The rich, fatty, salty, savory, porky, meaty juice erupts out of the dumpling like a volcano spewing lava. Even after making a tiny bite and pouring out the juice, (which overflows the provided soup spoon!), more and more squeezes out of the pork nestled inside as the bun is being eaten. The meat is a sponge for the soup, and I suspect if it were wrung out, the total soup content would put most SJBs to shame. The bun is not the more traditional bao-type gelatinized, leavened bun, instead it's of the denser, a bit more doughy, but thinner, variety that developed in the 90s. The skin is greasy and oily, but has the requisite fried crisp. The filling is essentially a pork meatball, tender to bite into and very meat forward in taste. A smattering of green onion and sesame seeds grace the top to add a small amount of aromatic flavor, although it's not consistently applied to each bao. A small side of black vinegar is provided for additional seasoning, much needed to cut through some of the fat. This is as close to the Platonic ideal of SJB I have experienced in the West. On my very first visit to Shanghai Dimsum House, I was hooked. My second visit only enhanced my love. This is the one restaurant that I will visit every time I'm in Vancouver.

This is a stall in The Crystal Mall Food court. It's located near the back. I tried their Xiao Long Bao (Soup dumpling) and San Ji Bao (Fried dumpling). Both were quite good, although I preferred the soup dumpling, but I'd still recommend trying both. Comes with black vinegar for dipping. Line can be long at times and expect to wait for your food (10 - 20 mins). However, you can be sure that your food will be fresh and piping hot!

Located inside a busy food court with tons of Asian food, this place stood out to me for its long line. I got the xiao long bao ($9, which is their signature), which is very juicy, unfortunately skin sticks together, causing me some difficulty in picking up the dumpling (one broke and spilled out). Skin was unusually thick which I disliked. Service and ambience were pretty much non-existent (it's a food court and place is not the most well maintained.

Best affordable spot for Xiao long bao and pan fried pork buns!!! Got an order of the Xiao long bao ($8.75) and it came out in about 10 mins, it was supppper fresh and so juicy!!! Wanted to get the pan fried pork buns too but it was a 30min wait so we passed on it. This is always my go to spot for Shanghai food at the crystal mall food court!!

This spot in the Crystal Mall is known for their Shanghai Xiao long baos (XLB), or Shanghai soup dumplings. They are big, fresh, and soupy deliciousness of heaven and a reason why they are so popular, busy, and well recommended. After a weekend hike I was starving and headed to Crystall Mall for a late lunch and do some produce shopping. Went at 3pm and there was still a short line up. I ordered the XLB and decided I need something more and also ordered the Dan Dan noodles for a total of $19.25 including tax. The XLB hot the spot and was delicious, as usual. The Dan Dan noodles were huge and had lots of peanut sauce but was completely bland tasting. The noodles were fresh but didn't have a great chew or texture to them. They were fine but was disappointing, especially compared with the amazing XLBs. Will keep coming back for the XLBs but will definitely pass on the Dan Dan noodles in the future.

We did a comparison of the xiao long bao (XLBs) from Shanghai Dimsum House vs. Shanghai Fortune Cuisine which is just a few stalls away. Overall if you are in the mood for extremely large XLBs with a lot of soup, then this is the place for you. The flavor was "ok only" and the dough a little thicker than I would like. But it is a fun spot to try for an unusual take on an XLB dish. Service was fast and ordering process very easy.

Great place for cheap, tasty dim sum. Definitely get an order of #13 (Shanghai style steamed mini pork buns aka Xiao long bao), and/or #14 the pan-fried version of XLB. Other classics: beef roll, wontons in chili sauce, and green onion pancake. They are cash only. Located inside the Crystal Mall food court. It's on the 2nd floor. Specifically if you go straight coming up the escalator, it's at the end of the left, near the windows. There's free parking underground - entrance is on the south side near the library. It's an awful circular parking lot.

Shanghai Dimsum House has been at Chrystal Mall for a long time. They used to be in Richmond across from Richmond Center. They are known for their soup dumplings or what they call them as Shanghai Style Steamed Mini Pork Buns and Shanghai Style Pan Fried Mini Pork buns. Their mini buns are not mini at all. They are huge. The steamed mini pork buns contains 2 plastic spoon full of soup. The meat was juicy and had a generous amount. The same goes with the pan fried buns. It tasted not bad. For the buns to be a bigger size (2 times bigger than the average ones elsewhere), the skin is a bit thicker in order for it to hold the stuffing and soup inside. If you ask me, I do prefer the thinner skin XLB. B ordered the spiced beef noodle soup. He said the beef was really tasty. I did find the portion size for this dish a bit small and doesn't have a lot of meat. It was tasty. My only complain here is that it is located in a food court and it is awfully difficult to find a table/seat during lunch time on a weekend. There are people everywhere. Definitely "Mountain People, Mountain Sea". I will be back again.

This Crystal Mall food court staple has the best xiao long bao (soup dumplings) in the lower mainland. There's really no competition for me--it's perfectly juicy, plump, and large. Flavour is absolutely on point--a burst of deliciousness for my soft mouth. And the wrapper does not rip when you pick it up, which is really crucial. Be careful as you eat as they are PIPING hot when they first come out! I haven't tried much else here but the xiao long bao is definitely their specialty--it's a must order!! It's often always busy so expect a 20-minute or more wait as the workers handmake your dumplings right in front of you. It's also situated in a very crowded and popular food court, so you may have trouble finding seating. I felt like a vulture waiting for people to finish eating and leave so I could swoop into their seats. Amazing service and amazing handiwork. When these ladies retire, it'll be a sad day that will be mourned in Vancouver. We can only hope their successors will be able to live up to their legacy.

Located within Crystal Mall's food court, my sister wanted to take us to try Shanghai Dimsum House Ltd. because they're known for the large size dumplings. We ordered the Shanghai Style Steamed Mini Pork Buns, Shanghai Style Pan-Fried Pork Buns, Green Onion Pancake, Stir-Fried Rice Cake with Pickle Cabbage and Shredded Pork, and the Shanghai Style Fried Thick Noodles (last two dishes not displayed in photo). The Shanghai Style Steamed Mini Pork Buns were massive and my favourite dish out of the ones we ordered. Although the rice cake and noodle dishes didn't come with what looked like no meat, was pretty tasty despite its how it looked. There were long line ups at the place from the time we got there (11:00am) to when we left (12:30pm). I would say this place is definitely very popular among all the other food options. We'll definitely be back to try the soup noodle dishes since they seemed popular and of course the steamed mini pork buns again! I also want to come back here because it feels very authentic and everything is made fresh.

A small apology or update from the staff would have been welcome, but none came. Overall, the food was very tasty, and I would consider returning -- particularly to explore more of their seafood offerings.

They were pretty busy on a Friday night, although we were able to get a table because some reservation didn't show up. Medium sized interior with mostly booth seating, and the entrance is narrower and expands to the back. It's a personal hotpot so each person gets their own stove and order their own soup base. Ordering is done via a tablet. They also have cooked dishes like skewers, fried mantou and other things on the menu in addition to the hotpot ingredients. Some of the items cost extra and are labeled with the cost. In the center, they have the sauce bar, desserts bar of mostly Chinese jellos and also an ingredients bar with things like spam and quail eggs. I got the satay broth and it was decent. Ingredients are served reasonably quickly. The quality of the meat is decent. The milk-marinated beef is actually soft, and the usual sliced ribeye, lamb shoulder and pork belly are fine. The cooked dishes are decent as well, as we tried their pork trotters, fried mussels, and lamb skewers. The selection for hotpot ingredient is as you'd expect for an AYCE place, but the cooked food selection is a bonus. Definitely stuffed myself and was a satisfying meal on a cold winter day. I'm so glad i randomly chose to have dinner on christmas day here, i literally made resos the night before and it was such a breeze! The new icecream flavour is watermelon it was so delicious too also complimentary with all you can eat and don't forget to get the token for free cotton candy!! The ambiance was quite lively and busy. Pretty well ventilated .. tables are spacious. I still need to try the dimsum here one day!!!
