I have been to this location multiple times with a minimum of solid 4+ star quality. Came here for Mother's Day dimsum today and was pleasantly surprised by a 5 star visit. Seated for our reservation exactly on time with fast and professional service. We ordered the Kirin special chow mein and fried rice plus 6 dimsum dishes. Each dish was delicious and carefully prepared - which was surprising on a day like Mother's Day. We noticed that there were a number of empty tables and no line up at all - another surprise on Mother's Day. Price tag was steep at $170 (including tip) for 4 people. They treated my mom and myself to a chocolate, which was a lovely gesture.

kirin special platter, a strong start, the bbq pork had an equal fat-to-meat ratio and crunchy skin

this is my second time at the kirin location in queensborough, by starlight casino and both times were for weddings. this time, we were fortunate to be invited to a dear friend's intimate celebration, along with 149 of their closest family and friends. as far as chinese wedding banquets go, this followed the classic ten course format. our table opted to be individually served rather than go self-serve or family style. service was attentive throughout, special shoutout to our server harvey, who noticed and quietly replaced a dirty soup spoon, little details like that don't go unnoticed. the couple mentioned they'd had several meetings with the restaurant manager, leading up to the event, who was accommodating and easy to work with. the team even placed bonbonniere on each place setting before guests arrived, a helpful and thoughtful touch. our set menu included: kirin special platter, a strong, satisfying start. the bbq pork had a great fat-to-meat ratio with a crisp, crunchy skin. sautéed prawn & scallop with assorted mushrooms & puréed truffle, peas were snappy and crisp, but the truffle was undetectable, even though it was visible. deep fried crab claw wrapped with minced prawn, golden, crunchy, and well executed. fish maw with bird's nest & minced chicken in puréed squash soup, no visible chicken, and overall quite bland. live lobster in consommé with ginger & green onion, despite being described as consommé, the sauce tasted more like a light cream, hardly any ginger or green onion. sliced wild catch "california mexico" brand abalone, braised with fish maw & peatip, not a fan of the fish maw, and the peatip lacked wok hei. crispy skin chicken - the standout dish of the night. juicy, tender meat and perfectly crisped skin. the prawn crackers, however, weren't fresh. steamed live fish - classic and well prepared. would've been great to keep the sauce to enjoy with the rice. special fried rice wrapped in lotus leaf - underwhelming in both flavour and presentation. stewed e-fu noodle with shredded pork & tender scallion, sadly, no pork or scallions appeared. another bland one. baked tapioca pudding, couldn't quite place the filling (maybe custard, coconut milk, or something condensed), but it had a nice flaky crust and wasn't too sweet. red bean sweetened soup with black sesame rice ball, soft, chewy mochi texture and a nutty black sesame filling, a lovely way to end. toward the end of the meal, some dishes appeared rushed in appearance. plating wasn't as clean, with smudges and splashes on the edges that could've been wiped. perhaps the staff figured it wasn't necessary since dishes were being served directly to guests rather than placed at the centre of the table. understandably, preparing a ten-course meal for 150 guests is no easy task. the timing alone is a major feat. for the most part, things ran smoothly, but a few corners were clearly cut. this dinner likely ran upwards of $150 per person, it's not a modest spend, so expectations were understandably high. while there were some misses, there were also definite highlights, and more importantly, it was a joyful evening made all the more special by the couple and the company around the table.

This place has a hectic buzz to it. Things move quickly. The tuxedoed wait staff are looking to get you in and out. We thought that the food was above average overall, and the hot and sour soup was particularly outstanding. We saw lots of people getting entire deep fried Alaskan crabs and whole lobsters but we didn't . Almost all Chinese people here which is always a good sign. We would come back.

Came here for a family group dinner for dim sum, they had a sale on the king crab and my dad decided to order it. The crab was very well done. They had a few different courses for it and each of them tasted great! The dim sum was also fairly good. While i did enjoy it, i wouldnt rank kirin dim sum as the best vancouver has to offer, but it would be in my top 5.

My favorite place for Dimsum in British Columbia. I love the foods here. Reservation is highly recommended. They have three locations: Richmond, Vancouver, and this one. I love this location because there is plenty of free parking. Easy to make a reservation (not as busy as the one in Richmond). Service is great. Everyone is polite and professional.

I've been debating whether I would rate my dining experience this morning with one star or two stars. At the end, I'm giving two. My husband and I went there for dim sum with my parents this morning. While the foods are solid, the customer service left a rather disappointing experience at the end. The two incidents irked me and my husband throughout our brunch so much that we didn't even care to enjoy the foods thereafter. We just, ate them. (1) One of our dim sum courses was duck feet so naturally we had bones left on our plates. Our waitress came by to change our used plates with clean ones. My parents' and mine got changed. When it came to my husband's turn, he held up his used plate to be taken away. The waitress said, "oh yours is OK" (literally) and walked away. My and my husband's immediate reaction was "WTF?". Our only explanation to ourselves to the situation was that my husband did not partake in the duck feet so there was no bones on his dish. No explanation, however, was given by the waitress. There was leftover sauce on my husband's plate nonetheless. We have eaten at Chinese restaurants at all price ranges in Asia, North America and Europe. I have never seen used plates being changed selectively, particularly when it was held up to be changed, no less! When plates are changed at a table, all are changed regardless of how much it was used. It's a matter of courtesy and egality. And, it wasn't like there were not enough clean plates to go around. Next to us was a prep table with 2 tall stacks of clean plates to replace diners' used plates. (2) We ordered the Kirin fried noodle. After it was plated, my dad asked a waiter for Zhe (as in Zhejiang) vinegar for the noodle. The waiter asked to clarify whether my dad wanted red or black vinegar. My dad was stumped and repeated that he wanted Zhe vinegar. The waiter repeated the options of red or black vinegar. Zhe vinegar is synonymous as red vinegar. However, for those who are only familiar with one name, they may not be aware of the alternative name. That was the case with my dad and the waiter. That was when my mother stepped in to confirm the choice of red vinegar. The entire exchange was pleasant. When the same waiter, came back with the vinegar, he placed it right in front of me (not just in the general vicinity) and I sat opposite to my dad at a round table. In other words, he placed the vinegar at a spot furthest to my dad. I would hope the two actions were not intentionally "vindictive" of any nature. Although both the waiter and waitress were very accommodating at other times during our dining, their two actions above show they lack awareness of sensitivity to customers. There are hole-in-wall restaurants that pride themselves on very good food and there is no customer service to speak of. However, Kirin is not one of them. Although it is not a high end restaurant per se, it is a "finer" restaurant as reflected in its pricing. Quality of food, customer service and experience are all parts of the package. If one fails, the dining experience fails.

    Braised short rib

I'm surprised to see that Kirin has a relatively low rating on Yelp, because this place was hands down some of the best Cantonese food I've ever eaten in my life. My family and I came here for dinner on two separate occasions, and both times we were completely blown away by the quality of food and service. We ordered set menus both times we visited, the first time we had an abalone menu, and the second time we had the suckling pig menu. Everything on both menus was SO GOOD. My personal favorites from the abalone menu were the braised beef short rib, the fried rice, and the braised abalone. I actually felt like crying when I finished the short rib because it was THAT good. Everything had such a delicious, fragrant, balanced flavor and was so masterfully presented. From the suckling pig menu, the highlight for me was the steamed sponge cake - I usually have this at dim sum, but here they also add a hint of grapefruit flavor and it elevated the entire dish. I can't emphasize enough how delicious every item is on both menus. Service here was also amazing. Every server that came to our table had impeccable manners and they were very quick with packing up unfinished food, changing plates, filling tea, etc. Seating is adequately spaced apart for both privacy as well as comfort. Every aspect of the dining experience just seemed very meticulously thought out and prepared. This is definitely a higher end Chinese restaurant and that's reflected in the menu price, but you certainly won't be disappointed coming here.

Got there for our 12:15pm reservation and was told they couldn't find it. Had to come back again and insist that they look again for it , this time speaking to the attendant in Chinese, and somehow our reservation magically appeared. Menu selection is a little limited -- didn't have some of my favorites such as tripe with ginger, fried mochi dumpling with meat or radish cake. Highlight was the fried taro dumplings and truffle mushroom dumplings. Hargow was sadly not up to par; did not have the snap I expect from high end dim sum places. Service was nice and ambiance pleasant. Easy to get to on public transport from downtown Vancouver.

Came for the set dinner. Food was good and the roasted pig was an interesting experience because I never had it served with steamed buns before. The skin was crispy but the meat was a bit tough. The other food we had was the wonton noodles, seafood fried rice, veggies with fish maw, salted chicken and fried cod. The dishes were pretty good but the wait time for the food was unbelievable! Our entire meal took 3 hours to complete which is way too long for a regular dinner service! With that said, the staff attended to us the best they could by filling up our tea and letting us know that there was only one chef working that night so that's why food took so long.

Came here for Christmas lunch with church. We were the first to arrived and were promptly directed to the backroom / banquet room. It's a very nice room and the staff were very helpful and friendly. Food was very tasty and portions were big. Overall, a very satisfying and memorable experience.

Pardon my half eaten dishes LOL we were all so hungry. Dim sum was decent and we were satisfied. Service was a little bit unusual especially if you don't speak Chinese...but overall friendly. Prices were a bit high for some of the portion sizes and the menu items are a bit different than typical dim sum places. Food: 7/10 Experience: 7/10 Service: 6/10 Value: 5/10

    What I.

Kirin Seafood Restaurant (Starlight) Southern Chinese (Authentic) (Dimsum lunch, dinners, banquets) Free parking Family friendly Casual Grand ambiance (private rooms available) Licensed Service good Food great! Roasted Suckling pig dinner (1/2 order) 5 people's portion. We had 7 and still had 4 boxes of left overs! There were 5 dumplings, we added 2 more for $4. Out of the 4 Kirin locations, New West is the only one that serves this banquet set and at an amazing price point! This dinner needs 2 days in advanced booking but call at least 1-2 weeks ahead to book a table!!! I've had this dinner a few times. We usually order a whole pig (even more amazing presentation) but we had less people this time so ordered 1/2. Either full or half orders are enough to feed at least 3 more adults. Food was fantastic as always! All ingredients were fresh! Authentic and true representations of Southen Chinese cuisine! The only disappointment was the dumplings noodle soup. I'm for certain that the kitchen forgot to add salt or something, it was very blend. I advised the waiter and was offered to remake a new one. We respectfully declined because we were too full already and still have 3 desserts coming. Plus everything else were so fantastic that we happily overlooked this 1 off boo boo. (A 3rd dessert not on the menu, steamed lotus paste buns Free because for a birthday celebration) Service was excellent. Staff were very attentive and sociable. I am sad to report that this was somewhat the case. Yes, the service was substandard but the food was too :( The service was pretty typical for a Chinese restaurant. The servers are doing their jobs and don't care too much about pleasantries. My main gripe is that we all felt like the food was bland (apart from the fried string beans). We had also ordered chow mein with bokchoy and beef. They had typed in our order wrong and instead a beef brisket friedchow mein came out. We told them that the wrong order came out and they tried to convince us to keep it but it wasn't what we wanted! If you are familiar with Cantonese food, beef brisket has a VERY distinct taste. Eventually they agreed to take back the beef brisket chow mein and came out 2 minutes later with the chow mein we had originally ordered. I could taste the beef brisket sauce on it still. They had just removed the beef brisket from the noodles and replaced it with beef and bokchoy. In my opinion, they should've made us a new dish as this completely changed the taste of the dish. In terms of vibes, the restaurant looks like your typical Cantonese restaurant, the inside is a decent size. I think the clientele here leans more to the older side, not many young people seem to frequent here. Overall, I will not be coming back or ordering from here again :(

We were told it was very last call and if we can order with in a few minutes would be greatly appreciated. We said no problem. The establishment is very bright and beautiful, elegant in its decor and rightfully so for their place beside the casino. We ordered sui mai(shrimp dumpling), har gow(pork dumpling), xo radish cake(daikon radish cake), fun gau(peanut/meat dumpling, xlb(pork soup dumpling), and dan tat(egg tart) All the food is standardly plated if on a plate, or in bamboo steamer basket. Everything we had was delicious. The radish cake could be crispier but I think due to us coming in so late they were trying to get it out fast. That being said the flavor of the radish came through and the xo sauce was definitely there and you can taste it. Other places I've been to you can't taste the xo. Hargow was large and full of shrimp. Skin was good texture not too thick but not as thin as other places I've been to. Fun gau was nice size, outer skin was nice with proper chew and the filling decently proportioned for a good bite when eating. The xlb slightly small and juicy bit not soupy. Decent if you wish to get the flavor. Sui Mai large and plump with the proper texture. Piping hot from being freshly steamed. The egg tart had a blackish flakey pastry used. Was very warm and buttery but also something about the texture was throwing me. Wasn't gross or anything but it seem almost like a mix of the flakey pastry/cookie pastry mixed. Very soft and the tart was warm. All our dishes were fresh made and appreciated their commitment to their standard of cooking even with us being there so late.
