I had a family dinner here on Friday. We had Peking Duck course ($73.95), Hot and Sour Soup ($14.95), Sliced Pork with Garlic ($18.95), Deluxe Fried Rice ($17.95). Peking Duck course was fantastic. Food was more than enough for 4 people. Duck lettuce wrap was fantastic we couldn't finish all of it. Hot and Sour Soup was rather sour than spicy. It was not the best, but tasted alright though. My parents would've liked the soup to be a bit spicy. Sliced pork with garlic was good. Deluxe Fried Rice was fresh and tasty. Staff was helpful bringing water and more Hoisin sauce. Food was pretty good. We ended up taking some leftovers home. It was a wonderful dining experience at Chongqing! read more

Surprising good takeout style Chinese food place kitty corner to Metropolis. Parking is available but very limited in the lot next to the building. There is also street parking nearby. The place used to be a fried chicken (fast food) joint way back, so the seating area is actually not that large. Most of the space is taken up by the kitchen. Staff are friendly and professional. The food is typical mid end banquet style, but the flavours are good, and the value is there. Lettuce wrap - standard restaurant fare. Decent quality. Fried green bean - nice and spicy, thanks to the house chili sauce. They can tune the spiciness on this one. Default is on the spicier side. Tasty. Shanghai fried noodles - standard restaurant fare. Hot & sour soup - better than the competition. Not sure what's special about it, but it stood out. Chongqing deluxe fried rice - one of their signature dishes. Great mix of flavour. Crispy rice with shrimp soup - honestly this would be the one dish that wasn't that great. Rice blocks were crispy, but the shrimp soup was nothing special. I'd skip this dish. Other than the crispy rice, everything is pretty standard compared to similar places out there. Expectations were met. Very good value. I'd gladly eat here again. Recommended. read more

Horrible owner I order a tan tan noodle and pork chop Go home and happy to eat it then I notice the noodles are over cooked and mushy So I called and the the lady was nice and apologized. You would assume that you would get the same dish, but they only cook me the noodles and no pork. The owner is like would u like it then , I said you made a mistake and made me have to drive back for my food, yes I want it!!! Waited for it ... I go home and again the noodles are mushy. I wonder why it went bad cause he made me wait 5-7 mins for the pork. I called and told him it is mushy and he goes the chef made sure he did it right!!! I said I know how noodles should be not like this and he trying to blame it on me. He is like u want it again I said I don't want to drive 3 times and the noodles to be gross. I said thanks now I have to go waste another 20 dollars somewhere else cause you guys can't cook noodles !!! I had to yell at him for a credit back . I wanted to try this place after I seen some of the pics of their food as it looked so appealing. Anyway we went there on a weekend for dinner and were seated immediately. Their noodles were good but the beef was awesome. Really good flavor. We also ordered for the bone-in chicken dish and they totally destroyed that. The chicken pieces were hard as rock. I'm not sure if they forgot how small these pieces were. On the plus side though the sauce was good. Overall not a very satisfying meal. read more

Disappointing. Don't waste your time. The lunch special looked like a great value - a choice of about approximately 25 dishes, with A bowl of rice and soup for $13.75. The hot and sour soup came out quickly after ordering. Unfortunately it tasted burnt. Egg rolls were greasy and felt like they were refried. The yuxiangqiezi eggplant dish was OK - not great but it was reasonable for the price. The seafood crispy chow mein was a sorry mess. The noodles looked like the had been fried, sat, and then fried again. They were soggy and disgusting. No self-respecting chef would serve something like that. I hate to be all negative. On the positive side the front end wait staff was friendly and prompt. No complaints about the service. Will not be visiting the Burnaby Chongqing on Kingsway again. Chongqing was the venue chosen for our lunch recently. We (the usual threesome) arrived about 1 pm, and fortunately, were able to catch one of only two vacant spots available in the restaurant's small and busy parking lot. The restaurant - though rather small in size, provides a decent selection of both booth and various sized table seating arrangements, and was naturally-bright, clean, and tidy. I would call it "comfortably busy" when we arrived, still offering a good choice of seating - we chose a booth at back, alongside the inside wall (and thought it had a cozy and private 'feel' to it). Once tucked in place, our server was right there with a place setting needed, copies of lunch & regular menus, and soon after, at our request, with mugs of hot tea, and glasses of water. Service was pleasant and friendly, and helpful (as required) throughout our stay. We ordered solely from the 'Lunch Special' menu, and shared four of the listed 'C' dishes (priced @ $10.95 each) -- Lettuce Wrap, w/Duck -- Seafood Chow Mein, w/pan-fried (dry) noodle -- General Tso's Chicken & Rice -- Stir-fried Green Beans, Mushroom, w/Snap Peas & Rice. The hot tea supplied without extra charge. Service from kitchen to table was very timely, with all dishes arriving quite promptly, in generous portion sizes, warm, and looking good. Preparations were tasty and flavourful. Ingredients in each, quite plentiful, well-prepared, and distinctly-seasoned - veggies 'crispy' tender, noodles not overdone, chicken and seafoods moist and tender. All dishes were definitely seasoned quite 'spicy hot', but none overly so (a little close for comfort for me with the beans & such, but ok otherwise, and quite 'perfect' with all dishes for the ladies!). We enjoyed our dining experience and lunch tastes at Chongqing. Chongquing is a good idea on a cold day. After wandering around outside in the cold and rain, we decided to eat at Chongquin with some friends we haven't seen in a while. It was 7PM so it was prime time for supper for most people, but the restaurant had a few empty tables. We were able to get a seat right away with hot tea brought out to us. The Szechuan Fried Rice was spicey and flavorful, but not overpowering so that we can still enjoy our meat and veggie dishes. I really enjoyed the Pan Fried Rice Cakes, but it's not for everyone. It's basically pan fried dough with meat and veggies. The pieces of rice cakes are soft, chewy and not exactly the healthiest thing on the menu. Eat them while they're hot though because when cold, they turn a little hard. Note - Beer comes in cold frosted glasses. Nice touch. read more

I met up with some girlfriends here for dinner. The food is authentic and delicious. I just wish there was more of it! It was a hot summer evening, I wish they had A/C and ice water. Instead they opened a door for a draft, and gave us cold tap water. the portions were on the small side, they bill for the food on the high side. The food itself gets a 4 star. the restaurant is on the small side. it's maintained and clean. The staff are friendly and helpful. There is a small parking lot. I would give this an average 3.5 as some dishes are 4+ and some can barely make it to 3. You really gotto know what to order or what to avoid. Ginger beef and dandan noodles are must try, IMO. Avoid any dish (fish, prawn, etc) that cooked in red chilli sauce. I don't taste any spiciness but rather sour (and a weird lil sweetness) in that sauce. But don't get me wrong, their house made hot sauce is something you should ask for if you love spicy food. They still have lunch special combo and price has gone up to $10+. Soup is no longer complimentary in the lunch combo but you can get it as add on for $1. The size is much smaller than regular but good enough for one person, a free bowl of rice makes it a good deal. It's as good as the Chongqing on Commercial Drive, but smaller and more modern decor. They serve a lovely lychee black tea. I love all the food here. They have General Tso's chicken! No one in Vancouver that I've come across has that. That was a favorite of my Americanized Chinese food orders when I lived in Small Town, USA so ordering it here at Chongqing makes me feel nostalgic. I'm glad they opened this new location in Burnaby. It's really convenient. The only thing is that it's a bit small--I don't think they could seat more than 45. Either way, I am sure my family will continue to frequent this place. read more

I used to drive pass this location when it was Chinese restaurant called Hing Loong with a massive red take out box sign, and then it became a bubble tea place. After all the changes over a span of over two decades, I decided to try out Chongqing in Burnaby since my mom wanted to try out this restaurant for her birthday. The interior isn't like a typical Chinese restaurant in Vancouver, but it feels like a small diner. The food arrived quickly and the servers were polite and friendly. The food tasted a bit Westernized, especially the honey garlic beef and sweet and sour fish. I do think they should have added less salt for their dishes, especially the honey garlic beef. Do note that one can order 1/2 sized orders or full sized orders for some of the dishes. Decent Chinese food, and those who like some of their slightly Westernized dishes should like this restaurant. read more

Once was sufficient, as we replied that we had heard him and were trying to get to the door while keeping our dog out of the way. He left without giving or even asking about our change. Then, he left our gate open. One of our dogs got out and almost got ran over. When we called in to complain, they didn't take our complaint at all seriously and it took a good amount of convincing to even get them to send the kid back with our change. All in all a terrible experience. Would never order again and recommend to the business they hire more professional drivers in the future. EDIT: So we called them to get our change back. It took more than 3 calls and 45 minutes for them to realize that we wanted change from our order. When the driver arrived he counted out our change in quarters, dimes and nickels. When I told him that he should close a gate, he decided to call me a motherfucker, a jackass and an asshole, among other things. Furthermore, he didn't even close the gate! Had dinner here with a friend as we just randomly found this place along Kingsway. Upon entering the restaurant, we were greeted and seated immediately. It was not busy at all when we went. In fact, we were the only ones there along with one other small group. Food came in pretty quickly. I ordered the cantonese lemon chicken w/ a bowl of rice, and my friend ordered some noodle soup. They give generous amounts of food, which can easily be shared between two people. Food was nice and tasty but it was nothing special. Service seemed friendly at first, but quickly became bitter when it was time to pay the bill. Though it was not busy at all, the server only came out two times during our 30 minute stay. She made it almost impossible for us to just get some water and a fork. And when I finally asked for water, she totally forgot to bring them so I had to remind her. And the fork that I asked for? She gave me a butter knife. Umm, yeah.. In the end, we were ready to leave after paying, when the server came to our table and looked at our receipt. Her fake smile quickly wore off as she asked us "so this total does not have tip?". And we said no, then she asked us why not. Aside from us not having extra cash at the moment, she did make herself quite unavailable to provide attentive service. She then continued saying "because I dont have that much money". She made us feel VERY uncomfortable and what she was saying was extremely unprofessional and just plain rude. I understand that servers need tips but not everyone has the luxury of tipping every-single-restaurant they go to. What more to a restaurant with poor service? I usually tip based on food quality and service and the latter was definitely lacking. To us, this was a HUGE turn-off. Unless you want servers shamelessly ASKING and expecting tips from you, I suggest you eat elsewhere. read more

Chongqing, Burnaby, has always been my favorite Chinese food. It's more expensive but the food has always been especially good. I had something special to celebrate tonight so I thought I would treat myself. I ordered extra spicy Singapore noodles and honey garlic beef. The food arrived promptly and I was excited to dig in. Opened the lid to the noodles and they were Shanghai noodles, not Singapore. Opened the honey garlic beef and it looked very greasy, which it was. To make matters worse, there was no flavour. It was greasy and bland. Called the restaurant. After much back and forth, they said they would send me a new order but told me order to order something different. I again ordered the extra spicy Singapore noodles and changed the honey garlic beef to orange peel beef, which I have also had many times before. Again, the order arrived promptly. The beef was tough and barely tasted like orange and, again, it was very greasy. The Singapore noodles were made extra spicy by just adding more spices but not allowing the spices to meld. And it tasted very mealy with barely any shrimp or pork. Plus the driver this time copped a huge attitude so I'm pretty sure I must have been discussed rather negatively for complaining. So Chongqing, you've lost a customer and the many referrals I've always made. Such a disappointment. read more

On a spontaneous whim, we decided that we wanted some Tan Tan noodles on a hot Saturday afternoon. I swerved my car into the parking lot of Chongqing, and we stepped inside a quaint, modern space. It's fancier than the other Chong Qings. Of course, we ordered a bowl of Tan Tan noodles to share, as well as an order of pan fried dumplings. Food arrived quite quickly, and we were in for a treat. The tan tan noodles were in a spectacular broth- it was a good balance of saltiness and peanut butter goodness, and a right amount of spiciness. With just the right consistency, this soup complemented the noodles.The noodles were also less chewy than what I'm used to, but it worked well for this dish. In hindsight, we probably should have ordered one bowl each. The pan fried gyozas were also quite delicious. Large pieces, not overly oily, and the meat mixture inside was flavourful. We're still thinking about these tan tan noodles, even after a couple of weeks. It's that good! read more

Came here for the first time tonight, and I must say that I'm not completely won over. The service was prompt and polite, our food arrived quickly, and for the most part what we ordered tasted pretty good. I was pleasantly surprised by the spicy wontons which came out covered in a thicker sauce that tasted a bit like extra spicy peanut butter. The stir fried rice cake w/ pork was nicely cooked and deeply flavored. Unfortunately, the orange chicken we ordered was a bit of a disappointment - the chicken was rather dry and the dish way too salty. I've never been a fan of the oddly shaped space, even when it was a former bubble tea joint. I do think the new owners have done a pretty decent job at giving it a facelift, but it still needs something...I just can't put my finger on it. Some mirrors maybe? Don't think I'll be rushing to come back, but will definitely consider adding it to my "too lazy to cook" rotation. read more

Not as different as the ChogQing on Commerical. They just don't have a lot of the typical Shanghai dishes, but instead they are fitting for the offices around them. They have lunch combos to fit that, but they are sub par typical Chinese food.... The food was amazing though. Very flavorful, just like the one on Commercial, and the service was just mediocre though. Typical Asian restaurants. The decor is very modern and upbeat, but the place is extremely small. The chandeliers are ordered from IKEA. I had no idea they would use that type of lighting, it was very weird. But, they wanted to be upbeat and fitting for modern style, then be my guest. If this place gets busy, it will be packed. The lack of parking they had is just hard to believe... But there are smaller side streets. It is such a different style of Shanghai food.
