MaMa Rich is the hidden gem near Metrotown that you didn't know you needed to try. Serving the Chinese dish from Guangxi "River Snail Noodle" (luosifen/螺螄粉), this slightly pungent but delicious dish is quite unique. The base of the soup is made with escargot and then has actual escargot, meats and other vegetables inside with a dazzle of spice. Protip: you can customize the spice level to your liking! I also recommend the mouthwatering chicken (koushuiji/口水雞) which also has a delicious chilli oil spice. Service wise, this restaurant is pretty small and is more of a no-frills service. There aren't a lot of tables so things shouldn't take too long but the usually aren't to many staff on shift. For the price, I think the value makes sense for a rather uncommon dish. I'm always around Metrotown so I've been slowly attempting to try everything in the area. We've been twice for dinner at MaMa Rich. They're a Northern Chinese spot that specializes in Guangxi cuisine and located right next to Onezo Tapioca. Even though it closes at 9:00pm, there were still people after us that came in for late night eats. We didn't have any issues with service; they came by to fill our tea several times. Just wish they gave bigger cups. Food comes out in a hurry. The menu is short and sweet: noodles, rice meals, appetizers, wontons and drinks. Trip #1 First visit was on a late Wednesday evening (around 8:30pm). - Mama's unique special milk tea ($4.80) - we added grass jelly ($0.50) which was unfortunately from a can. The milk tea was different than the norm as there was sweet fermented rice bits mixed in. Decent but don't think we'd get it again. - Sour and spicy crystal noodle ($6.98) - glass noodles with minced pork, bean sprouts, cilantro and peanuts. We got our dish medium spicy which was mild. Broth was excellently balanced; loved the sour notes. Glass noodles had a satisfying bite and cilantro added freshness to the bowl. - House special escargot rice noodles in spicy noodles ($13.98) - escargot, pig ear, beef, tofu, marinated egg, shrimp and pork intestine. There was also pickled green beans, bamboo shoots, tofu skins, wood ear mushrooms and peanuts. Really different with a good variety of textures and flavour. Loved all the types of meat, especially the tender beef, pork intestine and pig ear. Escargot was tasty but we wanted more. The tofu skin and wood ear mushrooms underneath were excellent. - Fresh meat wonton ($5.98) - this comes in a light broth with 15 homemade wontons, pickled seaweed and baby dried shrimp. Broth is basic but the wontons are great. Trip #2 Second trip was on a Friday evening (around 8:00pm). - Braised beef, pig ear and tofu ($10.98) - the beef is the same as what you get in their noodle bowls. Pig ear wasn't crunchy but the sauce (some sort of Chinese mushroom) was good. Tofu was fairly standard. For the price, it's a small dish; I didn't think it was worth it. - Shredded chicken, vegetable and cold noodle with house sauce ($9.53) - they asked us how spicy we wanted it; we went with spicy. Again, it's not so don't worry. The noodles were thin and the sauce was almost like a dan dan mein. We liked how it wasn't overwhelmingly peanuty. - Beef and escargot rice noodle in spicy soup ($9.98) - the beef is super tender. Again, the escargots are hard to find but everything else in this bowl is delicious. Tofu skin, wood ear mushrooms, bamboo shoots, bean sprouts, peanuts and pickled green beans. Satisfying and spiciness finally came through. An interesting twist to the usual Northern Chinese spots typically found in town. Cash or debit only. read more

If you are craving luoshifen(螺狮粉）that's not the instant noodles version, this is a great place to start. They have a large variety of different variations with different toppings. Besides the luoshifen, we also tried the stirred rice noodles, which was also packed with flavor. For starters, we'd recommend the cold chili chicken and chicken wings But most of all, we love love love mama rich because of their pork floss cakes(肉松小贝). Probably one of the best noodle spots in South Burnaby. A small, hole in the wall restaurant, but beware that this place gets quite busy. I would come back to try their escargot rice noodles in spicy soup. I would also avoid their rice dishes as my friend got the chicken rice and it looked very average. I decided to bookmark this spot after seeing the line ups of people waiting to get in. Not disappointed! My date and I shared the spicy beef soup, and the house chicken and rice. Apart from waiting for a table, service was fast no frills (which I like :) lots of free tea. The food was so flavorful and delicious! Got takeout here today based on Yelp reviews. It's very mediocre spicy noodle soup, except they go very light on the spice. We ordered two beef noodles and one intestine noodle, medium spicy. I appreciate how they separate the soup and the noodle for takeout orders, so the noodles won't get soggy during transit. 1. Soup. The soup itself was very red, but do not be fooled. At usual Chinese places, medium spicy is usually a good amount of spice for my boyfriend and me, but our soup wasn't spicy at all. Also, there weren't much flavours in the soup (I'm using the term leniently here, as it was like a bowl of hot oil, without the spiciness), and due to its oiliness you can't really drink it either. 2. Noodles. Since they were separated from the soup, the noodles didn't get soggy on the way home. However, the texture of the noodles weren't bouncy either. Can't really explain it, but it tastes homemade, not restaurant quality (i.e., not something I would pay for), but still passable. 3. The toppings. This might be where this place gets the good reviews. They do include quite a few base toppings with their noodles, such as pickled vegetables, bamboo shoots, bean sprouts, and snail. No green onions or cilantro, thank goodness! You can choose to add on other meats like beef or intestine when you order. While the amount of base toppings was decent, I found that there were only a few pieces of the actual meats (the snails and whatever meat you wanted). I probably only got 3 snails in my noodles, which is odd considering that it's a specialty for this place. My boyfriend wasn't impressed with the beef, as it was slices of brisket instead of cubes of tender beef found in usual Chinese beef noodles. The intestines were fattier than I thought, but they are literally called fatty intestines so be prepared for soft, fatty pieces. In conclusion, very mediocre food at a decent price point. For the noodles with meat added, it was about $10 per bowl, and it was more than enough to fill me up without drinking the soup. I'm glad that I tried it as I've never been here before, but we're probably not likely to come back again, not for noodles at least. read more

Got there on Friday at around 7:15pm and had to wait about 20 minutes which was fine. Once we got seated though, it seemed like the servers completely forgot about us. There was a huge influx of people coming in to eat as well as to pick up their take out and it seemed like they just weren't able to handle the crowd and stay on top of their seated customers. It took about 15 minutes before they came to take our order. The only thing I will say is that at least they were nice and apologetic about it. The only problem is that they proceeded to continue to screw up. After ordering they once again completely forgot about us and we noticed that the table that got seated right after us got their food well before us. At this time I'm pretty hangry and I remember looking at my watch and seeing that it was 8:15 and we still hadn't gotten our food. When our food finally came, I wasn't super impressed. I ordered the spicy beef noodle soup. It could be that the flavors of the soup and the accompaniments just weren't suited to my taste but I just didn't love the picked veggies in the soup. It wasn't a what I was expecting at all since it wasn't described clearly on the menu (in English anyway...). We also ordered the milk tea with pearls. The milk tea was flavorless and weirdly lukewarm and the pearls were mushy and broken up, I think because they were overcooked. To sum it up, not coming back. We stopped by for chance and we were hungry. It was busy at the time which is a good sign for us. I had the spicy beef soup that had some decent sized chunks of beef and was filling. It was cheap cuts of meat and you pay for what you get but at least the portions of noodles to beef is respectable compared to most places I've been to. The broth was warm, not hot which made it easy for me to eat right away, however, I can see how this would be a bothersome for certain people. I am not a big fan of spicy food but I love this place! Their menu option is kinda limited, especially if you are vegetarian (only 1 noodle options and a couple appetizers). I went for a mild Escargot Rice Noodles with Beef (牛肉螺螄粉) and the spiciness is perfect for someone who can't handle too much spice. My friend who loves spicy food didn't find the extra-hot spicy at all though. They are really generous on the meat and the toppings (escargot, seaweed, green bean, bean curd, bamboo shoot and peanuts). One thing to mention is that t pig intestines are tender and has the perfect texture (highly recommend if you are into it). Their Cold Marinated Seaweed Appetizer was slightly sour but I love this combination with chilli. Their signature milk tea (酒酿奶茶) is basically milk tea with sweet fermented rice. Place is rarely open based on my experience. But the spicy beef noodle is pretty killer and the soup base is without that strong presence of MSG after taste. Delicious food come with bunch of variety. Spicy chicken wings have a very unique source which you can't get it anywhere else; egg yolk pastry teast the best when its fresh baked out of oven. Real authentic szechuan style chicken noodle. Definitely a restaurant to revisit read more

Tasty food and fairly authentic. Their appetizers also taste great. Only downside is that they open only at night and close on Sundays.
