Just moved to Provo, and was looking for a place to go to breakfast. Joes cafe was phenomenal! The food was amazing and really tasty with huge portions. I really, really wanted to like this place. Usually small places like this are one of my favorites however we had a few unpleasant experiences here. It starts with the wait. We arrived around 10:15 and were told there would be a 25 minute wait. Okay, we can do that. It's now 10:52, and we're still waiting to be called. My husband goes in to ask about the wait and we're told there's still a group ahead of us. So we decide to go in and order to go because we are running out of time. We go in and we're told someone is just leaving their table and we can sit there if we'd like, we say cool! However, that lady didn't know about the people ahead of us so we're then told again to wait and if they can't get ahold of the people ahead of us, we can take the table. In the meantime, we put in our order. We wait and we are seated but my husband realizes we no longer have time to sit and dine. Mind you, there are only four tables available for seating and at that point it had been about 50 minutes since we arrived. So we let them know we'll just take it to go. My husband's patience has run thin with the entire situation so he waits in the car with our toddler. Our order comes out and I pay and go. I'm starving since it's now 11:10 and I haven't eaten so I start eating in the car only to find that the strawberries and cream I ordered for my French toast combo isn't included, which they do charge extra for. I got French toast with bacon and eggs. The eggs were perfect. One bacon was great and one was a little burned. The French toast was okay, nothing special in my book. My husband got the biscuits and gravy and a small grits. He did say they were very tasty. I ended up calling them to see if I can get a refund for the extra I paid for the strawberries and they aren't able to do partial refunds. I normally wouldn't have even asked for the refund but because we had a difficult time, I thought I would get my money back for something I didn't receive but paid for. They did offer a gift card but with the experience we had, my husband does not want to go back so getting a gift card would be moot. All in all, it's much better to get a to go order from here, unless you have no plans after at all. Had we known the actual wait time beforehand, we would've simply went elsewhere with the time we had. read more

We came here because the reviews were so great and had a poor experience. We had a group of 8 people behind us and a group of 3 people behind us. The group of 8 told the host their size so she started to take their order because they were so large, so my group of 2 then had to wait for 8 orders even though we entered the restaurant before them... Apparently, the group of 3 got here before us but accidentally sat down instead of getting in line? So when I stepped up to order the host told me they came before me even though I was standing in front of them in line... I think if it had been just the group of 3 it wouldn't have been a big deal but when you physically watch the host put 11 people before your group of 2 people it's confusing and frustrating. the point is that they are unorganized and don't have a system for ordering. The food is a step above Village Inn and Denny's, but lacks the variety offered on the menu of the chains. Now let my review begin. The ordering process was a bit chaotic. You stand in line to order your meals, then sit at a table of your choice to wait for your order. Then after you are finished dining, you stand back in line to pay your bill. Well we ordered our meals and we sat at a table. And we sat.... Finally after some time it was deduced that our meals were mistakenly delivered to another table. (Apparently the other patrons didn't realize that what they were delivered didn't match what they'd ordered.) As those people who'd been behind us in line where chowing down on our food we continued our wait. We considered just leaving, but we didn't want to be inconsiderate. Mistakes happen. After half of our meals were consumed by the other patrons, we finally received our food. Standard greasy spoon fare, but needless to say nowhere near the service a greasy spoon Diner has to offer. I don't get the raves. Joe's a cool guy, the food is okay, but the whole dining experience just was painful. I really wanted to like this place, but the hype is undeserved. Best grits I've had west of the mississippi. even if you don't like grits, try them! They're sweet and delicious. The biscuits and gravy were like none I've ever had...not sure it's a good thing. I was told the meat was turkey, but if I wasn't told I would never had guessed that. I recommend getting the gravy on the side because the biscuits were really good. my daughter had the pork chop and eggs...DONT do it! Her pork tasted like fish. It was really bad. I wish I had ordered a burger because they looked fantastic. We had very young girls take our order, bring our food, and ring us up. They were professional, accurate, kind, and cute as ever! Eating at Joe's is "homecooking" at its best!! His omelets are HUGE and delish! My partner had never had grits so Joe brought us a bowl of his grits for us to sample. They were likewise GREAT. Joe wanted us to sample his gravy from his biscuits and gravy and also wanted us to sample his tuna salad. It reminded me of eating at my grandma's were she wanted you to try this and that. I'm always looking for a great place for an awesome breakfast, and Joe's Cafe in Orem is by far the best breakfast I have found. I've been twice so far, and I've loved everything. The eggs were cooked perfectly, the bacon is thick and oh so good. Even the grits are amazing...I didn't need to add syrup to them or anything. If you are really hungry, I would recommend trying the Joe's Omelette, which is made with 4 eggs, bacon, sausage, onions, mushrooms, green peppers and cheese. It came with grits, and I couldn't even finish it all, and I'm a big guy. The best part of Joe's though is the owner, who is a hoot and a riot. He's always smiling, and treats everyone like family. Breakfast and lunch served all day (open till 4 I believe). You order at the counter, then get a number, then your meal is brought to the table. After you are done eating you bring your number to the counter and pay. Utensils, napkins, hot sauce, etc is over by the soda fountain. Our favorite dishes were joes omelette, the grits, Belgium waffle, and special juice. This is a family owned and operated cafe. The owner and chef is Joe. He is the life of the restaurant. When you are looking over the menu he will say "You know what's good here?" Then he says "Everything!" The walls are completely covered with pictures of him and the thousands of happy customers. The place is packed on a Saturday morning but the wait is not long because they are very fast. Wonderful experience and we will be back! read more

Apparently I'm in the minority. We went as a group last Saturday and it just wasn't good. For advertising the biscuits and gravy as something special (some concoction on top of white sliced bread - seriously), I was just so disappointed especially for someone moving from Houston. Biscuits and gravy should have sausage in it, not shredded leathery turkey or whatever was in that. I am not a picky eater, but it wasn't good, even my wife's Denver omelette was overcooked. We paid $70 for a breakfast that I ended feeling like it was a donation... I'm just being as completely honest as possible. Wish I hadn't read all of the hype. I lived in Houston for 13 years and my one experience was NOT anything comparable to good southern breakfasts. I have a good friend that knows Orem Utah well. I asked Carmen where is the best place To eat. She said Joes of course. She sent me there and called Joe himself to take care of me. My life changed today! I had some "life changing " biscuits and gravy at Joe's today in Orem. I come from the south so these biscuits in gravy and grits were like being back in Texas. The menu is simple, the omelettes are ENORMOUS, and the service is some of the friendliest I've encountered in this valley. It's also fun to see the various takes on breakfast classics. For example, my husband was expecting a white flour gravy on his biscuits, but it came with a brown turkey gravy instead. Different, but no complaints whatsoever - especially with a fried egg dropped on top. Prices initially seemed a little high, but the amount of food you get makes it worth it. It also just has this...happy vibe. It's family-owned and run and people love to come here, eat, and relax, and that's obvious. This is your token greasy spoon and I do mean greasy. It's down home short order cooking. I went with friends on a Saturday morning and had a really good time. I ordered short stack and a side of bacon. I was kind of disappointed when I got silver dollar pancakes instead. They were tasty and brought me back to the pancakes my mother would flip out as a kid. In terms of "places I like to go" Orem Utah sits at the very bottom of that list. Honestly, you'd be hard pressed to find me anywhere near that town. But, even so it really was worth the trip to Joe's, which was recommended to me by people in the area. Joes pretty much defies all the standards of Utah county. It is unapologetically unique, quirky and offers up classics, with southern flare. Definitely casual atmosphere. Order at the counter, have food brought to you set up. You'll never be bored looking at the walls which are smothered in pictures of Joe and customers. It's awesome. Not only is the food excellent, but Joe himself makes the entire experience all the better. This guy is the real deal, and when you're in this restaurant you may as well be a guest in his home. I had the chili cheese omelette which was everything I could have hoped for and more. Decadent, gooey and bursting with flavor. Even thinking about it now has me wishing that this place was up in salt lake. That is the only thing I would honestly change. read more

We wandered into Breakfast Heaven when we walked through the doors at Joe's Cafe. Southern Hospitality with a winning smile and a little sass best describe the outgoing owner, Joe. He was a one man show this morning as he took orders, cooked, chatted up the customers and posed for the camera! The food is delish; the portions, generous.
