We visited J. Gilberts in McLean, VA for the second time last night, and they did not disappoint. The food, drinks, and service were exceptional, as always. Our waitress, Joan, was so much fun, personable and timely. She even sang a song with us, that we loved. We also were able to meet the chef, whose name I can't remember, but he was also so much fun. This place has really gone down. The drink glasses are all dirty -mine had multiple lipstick stains on them and water marks all over the wine glasses. The bar area is trashed with food on the chairs/booths and even between the cracks of the cushions-just disgusting. The food also has gone down. For the HH menu most of the stuff is just deep fried. Reviewing the brunch only. Husband surprised me for Mother's Day with a brunch here. I was pretty excited at first because I had this spot bookmarked for a long time. Being that it was Mother's Day, it was very, very packed. Reservations are definitely recommended for holidays and Sunday brunches. We were seated in the back, near the restrooms and it was fairly quiet, even with how crowded it was. The pathways are narrow and servers are constantly darting out from other hallways that intersect with main pathways. Corners are sharp and you can't see people coming until it's too late. I was constantly afraid that someone would run into me if they weren't paying attention. Can you imagine all of this while holding a plate full of food? The floors were slippery, high heels definitely not recommended here. I saw an old lady almost eat it and she was wearing low wedges. With regard to the food itself, everything was ok. The spread was boring and left a lot to be desired. For $38 a person, I had a WAY better time at Founding Farmer's brunch. The oysters were good but weren't shucked well. The prime rib came and went fast. They bring the waffles to the table, you just have to ask for them. The dessert options were limited and the best thing there was probably the chocolate chip cookies. We joked that the cookies looked like they were from Costco. Overall, I'm glad I tried it but there are other brunches with better options. This spot reminded me of a slightly better Golden Corral. We had a reservation at 7 but didn't get sat till 740 because they were double booked reservations. The last two times have been not so great, server was good personable and professional, we didn't get the bread even though the server said they'd be right back with it. We ordered a filet medium and a rib eye med rare filet was perfect great flavor cooked on point the rib eye was med-med well I sent it back by the time my rib eye came back my wife was finished with her filet and my rib eye was borderline blue which is fine but not what I ordered took the steak home no true follow up or apology from management, no desert or anything as an apology. Tonight was the second time that hubby and I had dinner at J. Gilbert's. Let's start off with the best part--the food!! Fresh, warm bread was brought out soon after we sat down. The first time there I had a filet and tonight I had the filet/crab cake combo. Hubby had the filet/crab cake combo the first time and the fish of the day tonight. All of the food was cooked perfectly and so incredibly delicious. The sides are also amazing! We've had the mashed potatoes, green beans, au gratin potatoes, and the risotto. My favorite side out of all of them is probably the green beans with pecans. Who knew a vegetable could taste SO good!!! I would be giving J Gilbert's a 5 if everything was as wonderful as their food!! As for service, it's a 3 at best. Even though we had a reservation tonight, the hostess was incredibly disorganized. Even the host taking us to our table was confused by the disorganization. Both times, our servers seemed incredibly rushed. It's almost like the service you'd get at a busy diner. It makes us think that the waiters have too many tables OR attention to diners is just not a priority. For example, our waiter tonight told us that the fish of the day, which my husband ordered, was rockfish. Turned out that it was bass and it was a different price than we were originally told. We didn't catch it until the runner bringing the food said "here's your bass." At that point, we didn't want to send it back. The ambiance is also a 3. Overall, there's a lot of hustle and bustle. It's not a quiet restaurant. The first time there we sat near the foyer, which was busy. It was awkward eating dinner with folks staring at us, who were standing near the hostess stand. Tonight we sat in the back next to a loud table filled with drunk patrons. At one point a woman started screaming political slurs and comments such as "down with white people" (the irony is that she was white). Luckily, we were paying our check as quickly as possible to get out of there!! All in all, I give J. Gilbert's a 3 1/2 (too bad Yelp doesn't do halves). I am extremely disappointed. Let me start by saying that this has been my favorite place for special occasions for the last few years. It is rather expensive so I have always visited this restaurant as a special treat which makes this horrible experience that much worse. Below are the reasons that I have no desire to come back here again: 1. They used to have delicious, custom, homemade bread as an appetizer. This has been replaced by regular boring bread. You can still acquire the good bread but only during brunch. That took away the delicious beginning that I have always looked forward to. 2. The bread on the appetizer we ordered was straight up burnt and the portions of the little meat and cheese were minuscule. 3. The scallop risotto was extremely greasy. I could taste the grease as I ate it. (This used to be my favorite fish) 4. The service was poor and he wasn't able to get to our needs in time as he was overwhelmed with other tables. My family, friends and I came for restaurant week and even though it was quite busy, we were seated promptly with our reservations. Our server gave us the complimentary bread to begin with which was okay. Nothing special. We started out with the potato blue cheese appetizers ( forgot the actual name) and the calamari off the regular menu. They were both okay but nothing to die for. Then we got the crab bisque and potato soup which was a little salty but really good! The NY strip was amazing as were the ribs. The steaks were cooked to perfection the BBQ ribs were fall off the bone good. The side of mushroom risotto and the crab cakes was AMAZINGLY to die for as well. The risotto was so creamy and perfect and the crab cakes were literally just lumps of crab meat. Barely any breading/fillers. We were all stuffed by the time our entrees came out and we couldn't finish our meals. For dessert we got the chocolate mousse and carrot cake. They were out of the chocolate velvet and cheesecake unfortunately. But the carrot cake is on point! Can't go wrong with at all. Our server tonight's name was Henry. He was AMAZINGLY AMAZEBALLZ! He was attentive and funny and and he continued to give us great service from being to end. He was very apologetic about the desserts being out and gave us any dessert of our choice from the regular menu free of charge as well. If I could give him another 5 stars by himself, I would. Mothers Day dinner was a total disaster. We got home (live 35 min away) at 902 from a 545 reservation. It was over 45 min past our reservation before we were seated. The restaurant was absolutely filthy (and the bathroom disgusting). It took forever to get food once it was ordered and the food was lukewarm at best once it came out. I understand that it's a holiday but they took way more reservations than what the staff could handle. When we brought the food issue to the waiters attention they did little to remedy the situation (though I don't blame him as he was clearly overwhelmed). We will not be back. Had high hope for its steak but turned out to be a bust. Heard many good things about it and it is in my neck of woods. Had a delivery order once with grilled seafood for my wife and she loved it. This time, went with a carry out order for surf n turf and top sirloin. Asked to cook medium, but the top sirloin was almost welldone and chewy. Portion of the surf and turf was a little too miserable, five pieces of scallop and a 4oz steak with two sides, barely cover the bottom of a take out box. Came here for my birthday which is also New Year's Eve. Upon arrival the hostess wasn't paying attention and very informal. No biggie. But our server was a bit off. Maybe just his personality, but he spoke very quietly and not chipper at all. Didn't mention any specials or New Year's Eve menu. Our wine glasses were dirty, some of the silverware and the table looked like they were very old and extremely worn down. Based on the prices, I was expecting a bit more. The cocktail shrimp was large and taste good. The filet was good, although not medium temp. Sea scallops were pretty good. The green beans were basic but the pecans added a nice touch. The poblano au gratin potatoes were good with a nice kick. The creme brûlée was not very good, with a very thick layer on top. J Gilbert's is one of my top 3 favorite restaurants in the tysons/mclean area. Everything I have tried on their menu is pure quality. Have to always get crab bisque for starters. The best soup I've had. The Rueben is phenomenal! You can also get half a Rueben with crab bisque soup as a power lunch, which turns out to be an amazing deal. We have been going to J. Gilbert's for 15 years. We went tonight to celebrate my son's birthday and the service and atmosphere were not at the same level we were used to. We had to ask for things 3 times before they brought them. Our drinks were served incorrectly. The women's bathroom was a mess. Service was slow. Meals were had been ordering for 15 years were served differently. It took over 2 hours to get to the dessert course. When a party of 6 arrives (2 of whom were children who had school the next day) at 6 pm we don't plan to be there until close to 9pm. read more

Dining at J. Gilbert's was phenomenal despite one misstep. I wore a Bordeaux colored double breasted suit and I felt amazing. I enjoyed the rustic ambiance which added to a special Mother's Day for Mom. We ordered from the Prix-Fixe menu. I ordered the Kansas City Steak (medium) w/ grilled asparagus, Yukon gold potatoes, and carrot cake. Mom ordered the Surf and Turf with the same sides, and coconut cake. Complimentary bread was given and the Caesar salad was top notch. Mom sent her filet mignon back to the kitchen due to the steak being burnt and charred on the outside. The steak was over cooked on the inside. Customer service was more than accommodating and admitted the mistake. Mom was given another steak cooked to her liking. My steak came out perfect. No steak butter was needed but I had all three specialty butters. The truffle and blue cheese butters were memorable. The sides and desserts were delicious. The house Cab excelled where other wines for that price point would have faltered. Our waiter from Morocco was attentive and courteous. If you don't mind a short drive from the city, stop by J. Gilberts. The restaurant has a variety of options so everyone can find something they love. There is a team of people that will take care of you to make sure you have everything you need. I like this concept because someone is always available and you don't have to wait long for anything. The restaurant week menu is one of the best in that you truly get to experience what the restaurant specializes in, steak and seafood. The crab bisque was creamy and tasty. We enhanced the dish by ordering the Shrimp Durango and having the bright idea to toss the shrimp into the dish. It added more flavor and texture which was so good it could become a new dish on the menu. The Salmon and Steak were cooked to perfection. We were stuffed by the time dessert came and didn't get to indulge in the coconut cake and chocolate cake. This is a perfect place for large parties, a quiet date night and celebrations. I was in the area and thought, "What better time check out Gillbert's again?" The last time I was here, the food left me with nothing good to say, though the service was pretty stellar. I'd read that JG was good for lunch and I had yet to eat breakfast. I walked in, was not greeted by the hostess, and bee lined for the bar. I wanted to sit in an area where I could potentially make conversation with people. I also wanted to see was service was really like on a multi-customer/individualized/full service bar level. I walked in and immediately put my phone away. I didn't want to use the yelp coupon because I thought it might curve the authenticity of bartender, and that my winning personally would be enough to reel him in for conversation. Well, it took some warming up. I arrived as they were unlocking the doors (almost), so the bar was still being prepared for lunch. I ordered the maple salmon with smashed potatoes and string beans with a glass of Merlot (I can't remember the brand). The salmon was perfection; cooked medium with a light glaze on top. It was crispy on the outside with a juicy, flaky center. The smashed potatoes could have used a tad more salt (I almost never re-season my food). The string beans were amazing! They were tossed in, what tasted like, butter, sugar and walnuts. The merlot was just how I like it, full bodied and smooth. It paired well with the salmon dish. At some point, I made medium conversation with the bartender (my "I'm Adrienne from CA" line gets them every time), whose name escapes me. He was friendly and attentive. He also managed his time well between me, other customers and stocking the bar. 3.9 stars: I like to be greeted at the door and although filling, if I were a full grown man, I would have had to order an appetizer (the portion sizes could have been larger; 1st world problem). read more

All told, the happy hour here is pretty darn solid. For $6, a small set of their regular appetizers are available at the bar, and we ended up checking the Maytag Bleu Potato Chips and the Fried Calamari. The chips started out phenomenal... with melty blue cheese creamed all over the top. The awesome part is how heaping of a pile they bring out. The awful part is how heaping of a pile they bring out. It's pretty great at first, but unless you're working at it with a starving army, there's no way to chug through it all before the cheese cools, the chips get soggy, and it just becomes less appealing overall. The calamari were a surprise with the breaded and fried jalapenos thrown in (total bonus!) and similarly prepare sweet potato fries (of which I am always a fan). Also a super portion size for the happy hour price. This dish is a definite win. Even at our back booth in the bar area (yes, there are cozy booths in the bar area, where the happy hour pricing is good for... first come first serve) the service was absolutely spot on. At no point did my water glass run empty for more than a minute at a time before someone would swoop in, snatch it away, and return with a full one in moments. Plus, they're amazingly polite (and not too bad on the eyes). I don't know if it was my particular drink, but the bartender sure serves up a stiff Irish coffee. Just the way I like it. I couldn't tell if it was -real- whipped cream on top, or the stuff out of a can. Either way, it was fine... and the coffee was strong, and so was its corresponding spiking. Mmm mm. Just what I needed to warm up on a cold wintry day. The obvious sign that this is in Virginia is how amazingly smoky the bar is. Fortunately, they have some top notch ventilation action going on. Even still, by the time I got home, I could smell the reek of smoke on my coat. Ew. That'll have to go get dry-cleaned at some point. I Love J. Gilberts. It is a traditional old fashion steakhouse. Amazing cuts of aged beef potatoes and yummy sides. The bar and dining areas are cozy and warm; we sat by a fire place. Great lighting, spectacular wine list and just great food. The service is on point and the presentation is clean. Never had a bad meal here. On Monday nights the wine bottles are 1/2 price. YUM!. Well, I should know by now if I semi-regularly visit a particular establishment, it's bound to disappoint at some point. In the case of J Gilbert's, it disappointed three times - twice for lunch and the last (and final) time, at dinner. The two lunch occasions had everything to do with service: slow, inattentive, and poorly done. Having been a server myself, I'll empathize to a certain degree but won't cut slack on the "basics" -- one of which is to clear the appetizers and check on beverage refills before the entrees come out--we were dry, the table was crowded with empty plates, and it was generally awkward to watch the servers navigate. I think we call this "lack of good training." The final and unforgivable faux pas is to serve a very expensive steak at dinner that, upon mere smell, was very clearly RANCID. It smelled like a sewer. It's one thing to serve something like that without checking--or worse, thinking that the customer wouldn't notice--it's quite another to ARGUE about it. But alas, that's what our server did. At nearly $40 a pop, you'd better be serving prime FRESH steak or expect backlash when you don't. The maitre d' was classier about it, removing the offending dish from the table and the bill, whilst offering another entree on the house. The damage, however, had been done--no one had an appetite or interest in eating anything else afterward. Too bad. Food poisoning averted and notwithstanding, I might be okay to come back for happy hour. Thought being to stick to the fried stuff and booze -- a double scotch with onion rings, for example, would definitely form a nice prophylactic barrier against the threat of E. Coli. read more

While we were waiting to be sat I used the bathroom and saw many open tables however, we waited around 10 mins to be sat. Our server was inattentive and felt very unwelcome. Our server had said she would bring us bread but didn't do so until after, we reminder her when she brought back our drinks. Even after that she circled the restaurant a couple times before coming back with the bread. Our appetizer took a long time to come out as well. The food however was very good and we did enjoy the ambiance. However, The risotto was a little under cooked. SPECTACULAR!! This restaurant is one of my absolute favorites in Northern Virginia. My fiance and I visited for DC's Restaurant Week last week and had a wonderful experience. From beginning to end, the service was impeccable. The greeters/servers at the front were very nice, as was our waiter. Our waiter was very helpful and attentive and the food came out very efficiently. We were seated right next to the fireplace and we loved the classy, yet rustic, feel to the place. I felt like we were in a very elegant lodge up in the mountains. The meal was DELICIOUS! I absolutely recommend going with the filet or lobster (as my fiance and I did). For restaurant week, we ordered the following: -Appetizers: I ordered the Crab Bisque for my appetizer. It was very delicious and a very generous portion. I am a lover of bisques generally and this certainly did not disappoint! My fiance ordered the wedge salad (maytag blue cheese, spiced pecans, applewood smoked bacon, tomato, red onion, and buttermilk blue cheese dressing) and also loved his appetizer. -Entrees: I ordered the 8 oz filet, which was accompanied by delicious garlic mashed potatoes and asparagus! There was a $10 upcharge for this particular entree, but it was worth it. My fiance ordered the lobster, which came with asparagus, and also loved his entree and felt it was worth the upcharge. -Dessert: I ordered the mixed berries, simply because I hate chocolate and this was the best option. But honestly, I probably would have ordered the mixed berries regardless. They were very fresh and delicious! I had to take some of this to-go because I was so full, and these were still fresh hours later. My fiance ordered the cookie box, a very sweet little box full of delicious cookies. This place is seriously THE BEST. We also ordered drinks (a merlot for me and a cocktail for my fiance) and loved them. This is a review of J. Gilbert's brunch, specifically. It is my favorite brunch buffet in the DMV. I feel like there are a lot to compete with and some look really cool and are "hipper" but J. Gilbert's is simply the best when it comes to taste. Their Mac & cheese in lobster cream is my favorite Mac & cheese. The prime rib is always perfectly cooked and great with their horseradish sauce. Steam spiced shrimp and raw oysters offer great seafood options as well. You can also order waffles and donuts made to order to your table. Their waffles are my favorite in the area. The buffet is extensive enough that I don't even eat half the offerings. For dessert, their orange cream panna cotta or milk chocolate panna cotta are both my favorites. read more

Until recently I had only been to the bar area with a friend who lives nearby. While I had enjoyed the bar experience it was mostly memorable because of the conversation. Well that has changed as I have now visited for a nice Sunday evening dinner with family. The hostess was nice and informed and our waitress was engaged and attentive. I feel pretty confident all four folks enjoyed the experience. We has one salmon order, two steak orders, and one order of ribs. The person who got the salmon did the meal option (which means it begins with a salad or soup and ends with a dessert). She enjoyed the Caesar salad and the salmon but was particularly enamored with the potatoes. The guys went with steaks -- one plain and one Cajun spiced. I got a taste of the Cajun spiced and liked the taste, although it was not really spiced so much as sweetened with a glaze that contained mushrooms. As for my ribs -- those were darn good. I had been uncertain about ordering the ribs but when we were being seated I saw a plate go by and made my pick. These ribs were cooked with a lighter BBQ sauce (not molasses based). Instead of adding a tone of strong sauce after cooking they cooked it with sauce that nicely complemented the meat. The meat came off the bones with such ease it was possible to eat these ribs at a nicer restaurant without having to worry about making a mess. For me this was win-win ribs experience. There are a number of seafood items I was thinking about but ribs won, at least this time. The coconut cake was tasty and well accented by the lemon side sauce and vanilla ice cream. The chardonnay was excellent, very smooth with a nice light sweetness. This place is on my radar for places to visit again, perhaps for a brunch experience. read more

To be fair, this restaurant, compared to your average restaurant, probably deserves a 4 or even 5 star rating. The steaks are delicious. The lobster bisque is incredible. And other entrees such as the lobster macaroni and cheese are also quite stunning. The restaurant itself is large, beautifully decorated, and extremely welcoming. The staff is friendly, courteous, and attentive. So why the 3 star rating? Because of saturation. Having a steakhouse restaurant is a tough challenge because undoubtedly you will have hundreds, if not thousands of competitors in a metropolitan area. Considering J Gilbert's location in Mclean, VA only a couple miles from Tyson's Corner...they not only have to contend with regular steakhouse competitors, but they actually face some of the area's most well-reknowned and popular restaurants: Capital Grille, Ruth's Chris, Morton's, The Palm, etc. So faced with all these other choices for steakhouses, and considering that they all cost relatively the same amount, I have to put J Gilbert near the bottom of the list of elite steakhouses. Again, I say elite steakhouses, because J Gilbert's truly is a top tier restaurant. It just belongs in the bottom of that bracket compared to its peers. So if you're in the Mclean area and hungry for steaks, you have plenty of options. None of them will disappoint you, nor will J Gilbert's...but this critic simply enjoys the other choices more than this one. That's all. read more

Exceptional night at J. Gilbert! Came here for restaurant week on a Friday night (1/17/14) with my boyfriend. Our reservation was for 8:30 pm and we came about 5 minutes early and got seated at 8:50 so the wait wasn't too bad for a Friday night. It was pretty busy in both the dining room and the bar area. The decor is warm and inviting in a dimly lit environment. Our wonderful waiter Kurt came to our table upon arrival and got our drinks. He also told us the specials of the night. For an appetizer, when you check in you get the maytag blue cheese app which are potato chips with a maytag blue cheese sauce. It was just OK, being that I'm on a diet...I didn't eat much of it which is why I'm glad it was free. It was way too much of the sauce and with blue cheese crumbles, I had to stop after 3/4 bites. And plus for the app for restaurant week, I decided to get the wedge salad so it already had blue cheese dressing and crumbles. The wedge salad was pretty good. Now, the 14 oz bone in porkchop was AMAZINGGGGG!!!! No words can describe how exquisite the porkchop was. It was extremely juicy, mouthwatering and plain out heavenly. With every single bite, a burst of flavor just explodes inside your mouth, it's so juicy. Its perfectly lightly crusted on the outside, seasoned very well. It came with green beans with pecans and sauteed onions. The yukon mash potatoes were excellent and it was a very good portion size also. Now...to top off everything for the night..dessert! The creme brulee was my choice of course! It was very light and the custard was creamy and so delicious that I ate some off my boyfriend's plate too! Kurt was awesome and always on his toes, making sure we had everything we needed and was happy at all times. Everything was great, from food to service. The prices are reasonable, especially for a steakhouse compared to Mortons or Rays steak. I have no complaints at all. I cannot wait to come back here for dinner and to try brunch. read more

I dont have BEEF with this place, but they had BEEF for me! Oh my their steaks are delicious! I throughly enjoyed their Top Sirloin with a side of their cream corn. My nephew needed help with his wood-grilled ribs and I offered to help him his meal. I'm glad I could be of service as their ribs were really savory and very flavorful! Service was great. Ambiance was nice and relaxing. Prices are high but you pay for the quality. read more

Had a holiday dinner here with my bride's office group and I have to say I'm a fan. Slightly less expensive than Morton's or Sullivan's and the food quality and service were and are just as good. I ordered off of one of their "special" menus which included a variety of 3 course meals for a set price. Of course I had steak (I was in a steak house) and it was grilled to perfection (which in my case, is not cooked much at all). I also had a crabcake appetizer - simply phenomenal! They actually knew what a Manhattan was and how it should be served (you might be surprised at how many bartenders do not know what a Manhattan is). Atmosphere was dark with natural brick and wood, but not dreary. Lighting was perfect for the mood and we could actually have a conversation over the dull roar of the rest of the people around us. Simply put, even if it was on my own dime, I'd take my bride here just to make her feel special and appreciated. read more

We stumbled across this find during Memorial Day Weekend. In an effort to avoid (or get out of, really) the Rolling Thunder traffic, we were detoured to GW Parkway. After making a brief stop to Scenic Overlook, we took a chance with the McLean (Rt. 123) exit. Good call! We missed our original Sunday Brunch plans downtown, but were lucky enough to waltz into J. Gilbert's just an hour shy of the 3pm "take down" time. For the food selections, I expected to pay waaaaay more than $23. (Not that I'm complaining, of course). There was fresh fruit, assorted cheeses, a chocolate fountain, custard, pastries, salmon, shrimp, an omelette station, carving station, Yukon Gold potatoes, grilled chicken, macaroni & cheese w/lobster cream sauce (it looked so good, but my shellfish allergy wouldn't allow me to sample the cheese-Y goodness. Wah!), ham & cheese quiché, etc, etc, etc, etc. I'm leaving off A LOT, but you had to see it to believe it. Each section had all the fixings, too. It was a buffet-lovers DREAM come true. Bloody Mary and Peach Bellinis (READ: champagne with a 1/2 splash of champagne!) are worth every penny of the $5. By the way, an order of waffles is included with your meal. Very good, if you like crisp on the outside/soft on the inside type waffles. **FourSquare deal** Get a FREE order of Maytag chips (in-house made chips w/pepperjack cheese and blue cheese crumbles) at check-in. The portion is made for sharing, but I was stuffed. The few handfuls I did eat were really good tho. Would make for the perfect bar food. read more

J Gilbert's RUINED!!!! the Mother's Day!!! After staying in the restaurant for 2 & 1/2 hours without food, we ended up having the Mother's Day dinner at the McDonald's next door. We had the reservation. As soon as we checked in we were told that the seating would be delayed since there was a back up because of the traffic/accident on I-495 and I-66 which doesn't make any sense since we got there on time. Anyway we waited. Finally seated after 45 mins later. Guess what?? The table was not cleaned. There were trashes under the table. Waited another 15 mins till waiter came to our table. Since we waited so long, we ordered from drinks, appetizers and the main courses at once. Drinks served right away and Soups served another 15 mins later. It was very salty. Couldn't complain to anyone since there was no one around in the dining hall. After waited another 45 mins, still no food came. Finally grab the waiter passing by and asked. He said the kitchen is ruining late. And he said the manager would come by, explaining what's going on. Well.. while the waiter was telling us, the manager didn't even looked at us and he just passed by. After some time passed, almost 10 PM, still no food. asked where are the foods, and when we expected to have(?), the waiter told us he didn't know when nor how much longer it would take. OMG!!! Couldn't stand more. Had to leave the restaurant. This is the worst experience I every had. read more

We don't venture to VA just to eat out but a friend moved to the Stafford area and suggested J. Gilbert's as a nice place for her and I to meet for lunch. I'm not very familiar with the area but the directions on their homepage were good, and without traffic it didn't take long to get there from Silver Spring. The restaurant is very attractive, subtle lighting, nicely furnished, and with a gas fireplace, which was burning away on a chilly day in late March. Our waiter introduced himself and brought water and bread. We asked about the wine list and it turns out on Mondays, a bottle of wine is half price. My friend opined she was driving but our waiter assured her he could cork what she didn't drink and she could take the rest home. I ordered 9 oz "carafe" but it was much smaller than I expected. Our waiter let me take a taste of the wine and change my order for a full bottle to enjoy and carry home what I didn't drink. (We didn't split a bottle because she wanted white, I wanted Zif). My friend has been there several times and said she's never been disappointed. I ordered the soup and salad, a bowl of crab bisque and Caesar salad. She had a combo with half of a crab cake melt sandwich and a wedge salad. I thought the soup was very good and the Caesar salad was fine, not outstanding but good. Friend enjoyed her salad and sandwich. Her melt was a little different than what I'm used to as it was closed rather than open face, but it looked good. She had a bowl of ice cream and we both had coffee for dessert. We lingered over lunch but left our server a very generous tip for having tied up a table for so long. Plus he was very helpful and service was outstanding. For ambiance and service I give this restaurant 5 stars, for food a solid 3 stars, so overall a strong 4 stars. This was our first time trying j gilbert's mclean and we ordered delivery. My mom was in town so we wanted to have a nice meal with her. I got the 6 oz filet which comes with 2 sides; I ordered the roasted potatoes and asparagus. Food came and it was a joke... see picture. Literally 1 piece of asparagus constituted my side of asparagus. My husband went to the restaurant (we live 2 miles away) and they gave us more. But what a pain - I don't order delivery so I can make a trip to the restaurant. Otherwise the steak was cooked well and my starter salad and sides were tasty... they were just cold by the time we ate (after my husband got back from getting the full side of asparagus).
