I love this place it was such a nice dinner! Great food and Joan our server was amazing. Thank you Joan! J Gilbert's is an institution in McLean. They have great food, great ambience and great service. They are expensive, but worth it!

I am on the email list and received the ad for plank salmon, glazed shrimp, green beans with pecans, and mashed potatoes. I called the restaurant and asked what the latest seating would be for the special. I was told 8:30 (or 8:45) so I made this reservation. When I told the young man it was a party of one, he told me that, when it is just one person, they recommend sitting in the lounge area. He also mentioned they serve later in the lounge and no reservation is necessary. I asked if I can still get the plank salmon special there and he said yes, up to 10 pm. Well, I got to the restaurant around 9:10 pm. I sat in the lounge at a table and ordered a glass of wine. I guess that is all the server thought I wanted because, after waiting for 10-15 minutes, I had to flag him down to order dinner. When I said I want to order the plank salmon, he said no can do. The kitchen is already dismantling for the night and that's not available in the lounge anyway. The server was able to get me plank salmon, plain shrimp, asparagus, and some roasted potatoes. While it was good, it was not what I was looking forward to receiving when I made the trip. I feel I should've insisted on a seat in the restaurant area... it's not like it was so busy that seating was limited (a Monday night). I guess I was a bit thrown when I was told parties of one should sit in the lounge. I have been to J. Gilbert's a number of times and am disappointed that a dine-alone patron was basically told to sit in the lounge..... and then, adding insult to injury, I was mis-informed and could not get the special. I would have walked out if I had not been so hungry. I spent $75... quite a treat for myself to be so dissatisfied. read more

Cyndy's Bottom Line: A great place for wood grilled steaks. 3.5 stars for food. We were curious about J. Gilbert's and finally got a reservation. The parking lot was overflowing with customers on a Friday night. First thought is that there must be a good happy hour to be had.... Yes they do! It is called the "Finest Hour"! SUNDAY - FRIDAY 4pm - 7pm. Yayy! There is complimentary valet service. We were seated immediately probably not the best table but on a Friday, ok. Our waiter Amir was very good when I indicated this was our first time and he guided us carefully through the menu. Great service by Amir! Thank-you! This is what we ate: 1. MAYTAG POTATO CHIPS hand-cut potato chips, maytag blue cheese sauce. A large serving of yummy thin crisp chips with generous amounts of blue cheese sous. It is yummy & addictive! There is a YELP coupon for this so use it now. :) The complimentary peppercorn biscuit is served with whipped butter, drizzled with maple syrup and Maldon sea salt. Delicious right out of the oven. Interesting mix of peppercorn and cheddar. 2. Caesar salad with parmigiano reggiano, garlic croutons, asiago cheese crisp and anchovies. A good standard ceasar with delicious anchovies. 3. GRILLED BONE-IN VEAL CHOP parmesan-herb roasted potatoes, sautéed spinach. I substituted the roasted potatoes for the mushroom risotto which was a good decision because the risotto was flavorful and tasty. 4. Bone-in ribeye "cowboy cut", 18 oz. Huge chunk of meat! You have a choice of many sides. Have fun choosing a yummy side. There is a special steak sauce too. SIDES Salt baked potato Roasted brussels sprouts with proscuitto and mustard Creamed Corn with Burgers' Bacon Poblano au gratin potatoes Yukon mashed potatoes Grilled asparagus Wild mushroom risotto Green beans with pecans Sautéed spinach Lobster mac n' cheese ($3.5 upcharge) Chef's blend wild mushrooms with truffle butter. 5. Cheesecake made in house. Very scrumptious. read more

First time here so I went with the Prix-Fixe section which consists of three courses. I started off with the Maryland Crab Bisque which was delicious. It was flavorful and creamy. For my main course I chose the 4 oz Filet Combo with crab cake. I had the steak done rare and it came out perfectly done with a nice smoky taste. The steak doesn't need the steak sauce, but do yourself a favor and ask for it!! It was the perfect addition to the steak. The mashed potatoes and asparagus were equally flavorful and delicious. To end this entourage of flavors I went with the vanilla bean crème brûlée. I'm beyond satisfied with this meal and will definitely make it a point to come back! read more

I haven't been here in a while, at least a couple years. If i had written the review a couple years back, it would have gotten 4 or even 5 stars, but this time, it didn't rate as high. The one thing I noticed was that the prices were much higher than the last time i was there. I could forgive that because the last time i was here, it was pre-pandemic before this inflation. The service i got was as good as can be with an establishment of this caliber. An attentive waiter who gave amazing service. But the food which at one time was incredible, to now, it was just mundane. We got an order of the onion rings, and it was fairly mundane onion rings. They made it more impressive by describing it as "Pretzel crusted Onion Rings". The sauce was decent though I got the price fixe meal, which included soup, meal and dessert. My wife got the crab bisque, which was pretty good, but I kind of felt my tortilla soup was a little bit of a miss. It wasn't bad, but nothing stood out on it. I ordered a filet and salmon combo. The filet. For the price I'm paying, I expected a much better filet. I felt the filet was similar in flavor to Outback. bleh. a $50.00 steak should be better. The salmon, I asked for it to be rare, and it came out slightly overcooked. For dessert, I got the coconut cake. That was pretty good and a good size. All in all, the meal between my wife and I came out to 150 bucks without tip. For that price point, I expect a better meal. read more

I went here for a friends birthday dinner. We had a private dining room setting for 10 people. Our servers were very friendly and quick. They made ordering the 3 course meals so easy. When I go to places like this with a big group it gets kind of complicated with ordering and checks but the staff here made everything simple. Orders came out correct and it didn't feel like a long wait for the entree because of the timing of how they took our orders. The food was very tasty. I ordered crab cakes which came with asparagus and mashed potatoes. The mashed potatoes were my favorite part. So good! I also got a side of lobster Mac & cheese..delicious! Expensive but totally worth it. It's a great place if you're in the mood for a fancy dinner that isn't just about presentation but also taste! read more

The Hostess there was very snooty and put us in a small table under a strong draft. She emphasized the fact that we did not have a reservation on a Saturday afternoon and there was hardly anyone even in there. The dining room was half empty. After asking her three times we finally got a better table. She had initially put us on a two top table under a strong cold draft. We got a four top table without the draft. Waited 15 minutes for the bread. Waited another 15 minutes for a refill on ice tea. My fish tacos were very small. Three little tilapia pieces of fish in a taco for $18 lunch. Was going to get a burger to go for a child at home. However they had not even put the order in when we were done eating. So I canceled that. We had given them advance notice. This entire lunch took an incredibly long time to get. We waited about 40 minutes for our order to arrive on the table. Never again. read more

Food, service, ambiance top drawer! We have eaten there several times in the past 9 months, including a special wedding dinner and the food and service was excellent. The filet mignon steak was fork tender and Caesar salad the best I have had in a long time. We will go back soon! read more

I love this place! Its a dark restaurant and filled with lots of older people, but I find it comforting and old school. I always eat in the bar- either at the bar with one other person or at the booths. They have amazing bourbon drinks and we order one or two each time we are there. I like the Manhattans- up is my fave but rocks good too. I usually like their wedge salad and they have a pretty awesome steak and crab cake duo. Their prices are not super expensive; about what you'd expect in a DC suburb. We always have a great time and anyone we take usually loves it. The last time I went is was my hubs bday and we got his son't entree free, plus a free bday treat! read more

This place is so overrated! The bar is dark, dingy and outdated. Servers are good and they make an effort to give you a great experience. The food is average at best. Some specials like the beef carpaccio are excellent but only offered for limited time. Sorry folks but there are many better places to go in the area. read more

You get what you pay for! There's no hiding this place is pricey, but what I will say is that the food lives up to that price. The steaks, sides, desserts and drinks are all great. Which I have found not to be the case at some other high dollar steak joints. We came here for a work dinner and got the 3 course dinner with the larger steak option. First course was a lovely salad and bread appetizer. Not much to say except, I mean it was good. It's is sour dough bread, crunchy outside, fluffy inside (and in my case a bit messy) with a side of butter. Then a Caesar salad with fresh cheese and croutons. Tasty way to start a meal. Main course time. The steak was cooked to perfection and cut like butta. The scalloped potatoes were recommended by the waiter, and let me tell you. Worth the burns to my mouth. That's a warning that they come out piping hot and covered in cheese. I'm drooling thinking about it. We also had the asparagus, cus after the meat, potatoes, and cheese you have to have some greens. Even the asparagus was cooked and seasoned perfectly! Our courses ended with our choice of dessert. I got the coconut cake, my coworker got the cheesecake. We ended up taking our desserts for later since we were already stuffed. The next day we argued on who had the better dessert. While this may not be a place I personally could enjoy on my own dollar often, I do recommend it highly for special occasion and work dinners on that company dollar. It's such a great experience! read more

Honestly, it would be a 3.5 star for my visit here for the whole experience. I will say, all the staff were very friendly and knowledgeable regarding the menu, however, food imo did not hold up to their staff. Firstly, I did the valet parking. Seemed like young kids working very hard but one thing that irked me was that it was so unorganized. I left my car on the side with ignition on, and waited to see when it was going to get parked. They parked everybody else (even the ones who came after me) before they got to my car. I waited about 10 minutes until I told them my car is still there with engine on. Then they parked my car. Ok, I can get over this as they were busy and was trying to find spots. Between the two of us, we ordered the tuna tartare, filet combo with shrimp, and 10oz top sirloin. Tuna tartare did have some refreshing ingredients like mango and pineapple, but something just didn't taste right for me. Tuna was more on the pink-ish color instead of red. I'm thinking maybe cilantro oil did not hold it together well. On to the wood fired steaks. I did enjoy the wood char taste on the steak. I had my 4oz filet mignon cooked to rare, but it lacked a lot of juice. Despite it being a rare steak, it seemed dry. Maybe because it was wood fired? I'm not sure. The top sirloin did taste good with good flavor. I did feel the presentation of the dishes needed some improvement. I'm the type to eat with my eyes, nose, then mouth, and it just didn't look pleasing to my eyes. For example, my 4oz steak is pretty small and even with the side dishes placed on the main dish, so much empty space in between everything. I had to readjust food for my pic haha Maybe smaller plate would have complimented better. Oh, the truffle butter mushroom side dish... I couldnt taste any truffle. Lobster mac n cheese, I saw 1 claw meat. Maybe meat was minced in there... Not sure. For the wine, we asked for recommendation, and it was a very good wine. (Conumdrum, blend) but it nearly took 15minutes until we got our wine... So yea, overall, 3.5 for my experience. Not a bad place for the price, but I guess it's just not on par with my taste for steak. =\ read more

Came here with my husband a few weeks ago after a day of fasting. We had a great experience (apparently much better than a lot of people!)! We both went for the prixe-fixed menu. Salad: I ordered the Wedge Salad which was so delicious -- the bacon was prominent and the dressing was just the right amount. I only wish that the lettuce hadn't been a wedge and had already been cut up, but not a deal breaker. My husband went with the Maryland Crab Bisque which was great as well -- it was particularly delicious when dipping the bread in the bisque. Entree: I got the 4 oz Filet with the Bourbon Maple Shrimp and I replaced the Mashed Potatoes with Lobster Mac & Cheese (upcharge). I was a bit disappointed in the quality of the Filet but other than that I was pretty happy with everything. The Mac and Cheese was a little cold which was also disappointing. My husband got the exact same thing but he got Scallops instead of Shrimp. We were both very impressed with the Scallops as we know how many professional chefs struggle with that. Dessert: I had the Chocolate Velvet Cake and my husband had the Creme Brulee. Both were good (not great). read more

This review is just for the bar area experience, not the full dining area and menu experience. We had a happy hour here after work. The bar area is really small and cramped. There's not much seating. There's a long table that runs a good portion of the length of the area that people can stand at. A few tiny tables. And then two of the corners have two small round booths that are attached by a long booth in the middle. We found it really tough to fit everyone into the area comfortably once they all arrived, especially given how crowded it got otherwise. Maybe a good place for a mid-day meeting or something, but not sure it's suitably large enough for happy hour. The prices aren't too bad. The appetizer food was just so-so. They could use some more variety in the availabilities. The best thing I had was a pretzel-encrusted onion ring. The service is speedy and friendly. They know what they're doing, and it's nice that you get a server even in the bar area. The place isn't very Yelp-friendly though, even though it offers a free appetizer with checkin. My boss was picking up the tab, so I thought I'd help him out by using my checkin free appetizer on one of the plates on the bill. When I showed my phone to the server (Jane? An older lady.), she made a stink about it and how I should've told her sooner and went on and on sort of rudely. Like, OK, first of all, you put no such instructions anywhere, secondly, why offer Yelp specials if you're then going to bitch about it? The atmosphere and settings are really nice, like they're trying to imitate Wildfire (but not quite as classy or nearly as good as Wildfire). Not a bad place. I'd go try dinner there (looked pretty empty though when I went to the restroom out there, so don't know what that says about it) once maybe, but it won't be my first choice. Especially because you have to go through all the mess of Tysons Corner and the Metro construction to get there. read more

I came here for a Valentine's Day dinner with my boyfriend and I must say that I loved the romantic atmosphere and delicious food. They have dimly lit lighting and even a fire place to set the romantic mood. Their food is pricy. I tried their rib eye with mash potatoes and lobster mac and cheese. The lobster mac and cheese was a four dollar upgrade. The rib eye was cooked perfectly and was melt in you mouth delicious. The mash potatoes were decent and their mac and cheese was good too, but probably not worth the four dollar upgrade. It had big chinks of lobster in the cheesy mac and cheese. However, there was nothing special about it. I got the blue cheese chips that came with the yelp check in, but they were not that good. The chips were drenched in blue cheese. I'm not a big fan of this cheese, but I still gave it a try because they were free. I ended up picking around the cheese and eating the parts without the cheese. Even if I get them for free next time, I probably will not be getting them. They had a lot of salads to start with. The salads are basic and there is nothing special about them. They even have home made dessert for you to pick from. I got the chocolate mousse with raspberry ice cream. I traded the raspberry ice cream with vanilla. The dessert was pretty good, but again was not that special. Just a typical chocolate cake with mousse in it. I feel like this place is known for their meat, but everything else is pretty basic and over priced. However, it's a nice place to go to for a special occasion. read more

I have been going to this steakhouse for the past 5 years. They are extremely accommodating with a large party and the service is always excellent every time I come here. There is parking out front and valet parking available as well. The ambiance is very classy and it is definitely a popular spot for date nights. At my last visit, I ordered the filet combo. You get to choose between 2 sizes of steak, a seafood (crab cake, scallops, shrimp), and 2 sides. I ordered the 4 oz filet with scallops with the lobster mac and cheese and poblano au gratin potatoes. It is a generous portion of food and I had enough for leftovers the next day. The filet was tender and juicy and the scallops were soft and aromatic. The lobster mac and cheese is a $4 upcharge, but so worth it considering that there are big chunks of lobster added to the dish. The poblano au gratin potatoes was just mediocre; there was a charred layer of cheese on top which I did not care for. For dessert, we had the creme brûlée and that was amazingly satisfying to our sweet tooth. The custard was so smooth and savory. Delicious!! read more

Ok, I hate to write a negative review but here goes. We went to Easter buffet today. We arrived at 3pm thinking we were going to get table service and NOT a buffet ( table service started at 4. We asked for dinner when we got reservations). The buffet food was fairly ran through. No one was restocking (there was at least another hour left), the waffle station wasn't really attended. You were lucky to get a quarter of a cold waffle left in the basket even though there were two waffle irons present that were supposed to be staffed. No one was managing the buffet at all. But the worst part was all the spoons and tongs had been used so Much they felt greasy and sticky. Cold food was warm and hot food was cold. I opted for the omelette station which was staffed with two really great guys who made a very tasty omelet. Our server was attentive but we had dirty greasy glasses at every place at our booth. Yes, I know it was Easter, but so did J Gilbert's. The manager did apologize for "not finishing strong". Really? No one was managing the buffet room at all. So, I wouldn't ever get buffet service at this restaurant. I try to avoid buffets anyway for the reasons stated. Get table service at J Gilbert's Only. read more

The staff was great at accommodating a party of six (plus 7 babies). I had the Caesar salad which was served with fresh sliced anchovies on the top (if you are into that sort of thing). If you're in the mood to splurge a little, this is the place to do it. The lunch menu is has a solid variety & I can guarantee that anything off the menu will be amazing. I've had lunch here a couple times in the past, but recently stopped by for a birthday lunch with a co-worker. I'm glad to say that the J.Gilbert's has yet to disappoint. I wasn't able to get an appetizer because honestly I only get one hour for lunch, so I only had time for an entree. I ordered the Steak & Frites and my co-worker ordered the Wagya Beef Burger. We actually ended up splitting our entrees with each other, so I was able to try the burger as well. Steak & Frites: I asked mine to be good medium, & it was absolutely perfect. Many times I get medium well or well done at other restaurants but they always seem to get it right. The steak was seasoned well & the ancho butter is to die for. I've ordered this dish before and they have yet to disappoint me. I love their sweet potato fries! They're crispy, but not oily.. And extremely addicting. Wagya Beef Burger: My co-worker ordered it medium, and this too was cooked perfectly. The shallot jam, mayo, watercress and cheese all went so well together. I wish I could put the jam on every burger I eat from now on.. The pretzel bun held everything together well and didn't get mushy. I would recommend this place to anyone that wants some good food. I've tried a few of their other menu items like their Lobster Mac & Cheese and I can testify that the quality of their food is definitely worth the price. The customer service is always exceptional. They great you with smiles. The ambiance is very warm and intimate. I love the vibe. I will definitely head back there again as soon as I can. read more

They offered a very nice Valentine's Day dinner, we very much enjoyed it. Yes, the place is very nice in presentation and how the walls were red covered bricks. Very cool feel. Our waiter, wish I could remember his name (I was too excited about the menu) but he was very kind and funny. He let us know the menu, and let us know that unfortunately they were of certain sides, as well as the 6oz fillet that came with the entree. Although he was very kind to substitute it for an 8oz and didn't up the price of the dish, we only paid the original price. The macaroni and lobster side was amazing, definitely a side you should order. We were super lucky to get someone so kind as him as our waiter. Came here with the boy for Valentine's dinner. Parking lot was completely full at 8pm. We were about to take advantage of the complimentary valet, when a happy hour patron came out and opened up a parking spot. The restaurant is pretty cozy feeling. We were early, so we got a drink at the bar while we waited. I thought the grapefruit juice in my vodka/grapefruit might have been spoiled, but the boy took a taste and assured me they had just been really generous with the vodka. Yes, quite generous. We were seated in a booth (I think someone here mentioned all tables are booths, not sure) and while the seat-backs aren't high, I still felt like there was enough privacy. I had the wedge salad, he had the carpaccio. We were both happy. I ordered the filet and crabcake combo with broccolini and lobster mac-n-cheese (small upcharge). The boy had some huge steak with smashed yukons and spinach. Both of us really enjoyed our meals. Everything was cooked perfectly. The bread was warm and crusty on the outside, soft inside. The boy had carrot cake (very good) and I had the brown velvet cake. I thought it would be like a red velvet, but not red. It was a one layer mousse-type cake concoction. Not bad, just not what I expected. The surprise was the in-house-made raspberry ice cream that came with my cake. So GOOD! We loved our dinner, service was excellent, price was great. Can't believe we haven't been here before. I think I'd like to try Sunday brunch sometime. read more

I was celebrating an anniversary a week ago, and when trying to choose a new place to eat, I wasn't sure what to pick. However, I finally thought of J. Gilbert's after passing it on 123 on my way home from work every day. I did a little research online, and decided it would be the perfect place for a romantic night out. I made reservations via OpenTable, and we were quickly seated after arriving. It was a Tuesday night, but the restaurant was pretty crowded, especially in the bar area. I hadn't imagined there would be so many people there, but that is okay. Also, considering the size of their parking lot I thought I would have no problem finding a space, but ended up parking in the garage across the street. I started with the Lemon Drop martini, which included a rock candy stick - so fun! They poured the drink right at the table, which I thought was a really nice touch. They also bring out cheddar black pepper biscuits with a whipped maple butter to start with. I honestly think these were some of the best biscuits I have ever had. As I started to bite into them, they were falling apart and the butter was a perfect sweet complement. For my main course, I enjoyed the center cut filet mignon, poblano au gratin potatoes, and creamed corned with Burgers' bacon. Way too much for me to finish, but everything was absolutely delicious. The steak was cooked exactly how I had requested, and the sides were so so good. As it was our anniversary, the server comped dessert for us, and we split the apple croustade. I really enjoyed the warm bourbon maple syrup on top, and the cool cinnamon ice cream. I'll definitely be coming back! read more

I question their "Prime" designation when describing their steaks. If they are indeed "USDA Certified Prime Beef" they should state so with pride. Otherwise, it's deceptive. Let me tell you about the worst dining experience we've ever had. June 6 was our anniversary and decided to go somewhere different, as we usually go to Arties for special occasions. We ate an appetizer which was very good, Durango shrimp. After waiting close to an hour for our meal, I asked the waitress, who by the way was very unfriendly, where our dinner was. This was while she was serving everyone around us and most came in after us,and didn't think to be a little more attentive to us sitting there waiting. After about the longest five minutes in history she came back and said our ticket was lost. The managercame out and said the same thing and after we said we were leaving he offered to box up the steak and wedge salad to go which he said could be "thrown together quickly" . But what about the other entree, it could not be thrown together quickly. My wife was practically in tears. We were/are still very disappointed that they didn't offer to comp our appetizer or a couple drinks. I'm still fuming over this matter and I owe my wife a nice anniversary dinner still. We will be going to Arties like we should have done from the start. read more

Restaurant was packed to the brim and the quality was sub par. Waiting staff could barely fit between the patrons as they served them. Some main courses over salted, some under salted. a few dishes were undercooked. The crem brûlée dessert was burned. Excellent in every way. That pretty much sums up my experience. I was visiting MacLean recently and had arranged to meet a family member for lunch. I ended up arriving ridiculously early, and it was hot and humid outside, too much so for my tender San Francisco sensibilities, and so I waited in the bar, as you do. The bartender was fabulous--a nice guy, clearly an expert at his craft. Friendly and engaging, he gave me a history of the building and the area and made me feel well taken care of during my wait. When our server, as friendly and engaging as the bartender, seated us in the dining room, she started us off with fresh, hot sourdough bread. Be still, my San Francisco heart! What a treat. My lunch companion and I ordered the same thing: petite filet, RARE, scallops, mashed potatoes, and grilled asparagus. That sweet little filet may have been the best I have ever had, and I have eaten a lot of filet. Perfectly seared on the outside and absolutely perfectly rare on the inside, it was a little piece of Heaven. My companion was in agreement. Our food was delicious and perfectly prepared, and there was just the right amount--something I appreciate. We cleaned our plates and were quite satisfied without being overly full. The creme brulee we had for dessert was as perfect in its own way as our entree--a gorgeous texture and flavor. I was particularly grateful to our server for noticing that we had lots of catching up to do, and she timed her appearances perfectly; she was at our elbow precisely when we needed something, but did not hover. The prices are not cheap, nor should they be, but I found them to be quite reasonable for the quality of the food and service. If I lived nearby, I would save my pennies and eat here every week. Thank you, J. Gilbert's. read more

This is a cute little restaurant with great ambiance but average food and service. My issue with our visit was the menu prices weren't what we were charged. Ever dish was $5-$9 more than the menu. When we pointed it out to we were told they are in the process of updating their menus. That's fine but we should have been told this upfront or they should have charged us the menu prices. They didn't even offer an apology for the discrepancy. read more

The blackened chicken penne is incredible! Excellent service from our waitress, Aniya. Will definitely return.
