The only reason this place got even two stars was because the food is pretty good. Went here on a Thursday night with family for dinner. Got seated right away, but then it took almost an hour for our food to be served. Place was packed and they had only one server on! Server only came back once to fill water glasses. Never kept us updated as to why it was taking so long. My husband and daughter got their meals at least ten minutes before me. Only when my daughter complained to the hostess did my meal appear. Even when we asked for a manager we were told there wasn't one there. Not pleased with the service here at all. Can't imagine how it is on the weekend! read more

This is a nice Japanese restaurant in Hudson Valley with nice but quiet ambiance and food is very good. We had chirashi which was served in a bowl but at Isamu it was on a platter with several pieces (quite generous) of sashimi beautifully arranged. We also had grilled octopus which was good as well. I rate this 4 stars because as a local of Beacon, this is the only place to get sushi within walking distance and is a nice place to go to for sit-in Chinese/Japanese food. The restaurant is a hit/miss. I would be careful of when they get fresh fish because I have been there when the sashimi has been mouth-melting and I have been there when it looked like they were giving us scraps. I think the food listings can be more descriptive. I ordered Hot & Spicy beef and didn't expected everything, including the beef to be sliced up. I give service between 3 and 4 stars. There is one rude male waiter who did not ask if we wanted dessert and placed the bill on the table. I was so annoyed that I went to speak to the manager. He was busy so I spoke to a waitress who said she would lecture the waiter. We went back another time and it was 3 waiters servicing us and so we were asked twice if we wanted dessert. This is an interesting restaurant surprisingly found in Beacon. I would have to agree with the reviews which say the language barrier makes things slightly inconvenient, but not that much so. The food is good. I ordered tempura, mostly because I didn't understand many of the items on the menu. I didn't really know what a Bento box was, which what was what my wife ordered. When she got her meal, she had tempura plus a bunch of other items, and it turned out to be much more food. I tasted her sushi which I didn't really care for (and I noticed she didn't finish her's either), but she was quite happy with her meal. My shrimp tempura was excellent, the vegetable tempura was good, and the chicken tempura was poor. But the tempura sauce was very good as well as the batter. Asking the waitress a question was difficult due to the language barrier, but the service was excellent. Overall, I would say this place is not bad, especially if you live in Beacon, but there are a number of Japanese/Chinese restaurants now in the area which give this place a real run for the money. You may want to check out Izumi in Fishkill, and Chen Young in Wappingers Falls - both excellent restaurants. I feel next time I am in the mood for Japanese/Chinese, I am heading to Chen Young - still the best in the area for both cuisines. read more

In a word: lousy. The place is one large room with as many small tables jammed into it as possible - I presume this is in order to handle a pre-performance at the Towne Crier crowd. When we first arrived to meet our friends the place was pretty full and we had to yell to one another in order to be heard across our small table. This was the first indication that the proprietors have no concern whatsoever for the dining experiences of their patrons, which was consistently demonstrated. The second was the warm (nearly hot) can of ginger ale that was brought to the person who ordered a ginger ale, along with a plastic glass filled with ice which immediately melted when the warm soda was poured into it, thoroughly diluting the soda. What does it say for a place that doesn't even bother to refrigerate the cans of soda that it serves? I ordered a Sapporo beer - a glass was not even offered by the surly wait staff who appeared to dislike us right from the start. That did not change through our meal. Their primary focus was delivering the food and promptly removing the dishes - presumably to turn over the table as quickly as possible. I ordered a yellowtail & scallion hand roll appetizer and the sashimi entree, which came with a small salad and a cup of tepid (and lousy) miso soup. The appetizer was served along with the entree, which was 3 pieces each of 5 different types of fish (tuna, white tuna, red snapper, salmon and yellowtail) piled onto a small heap of white radish that was soggy and appeared to have been prepared days earlier (or perhaps taken out of a bucket of store-bought radish) and a couple of leaves. Minimal effort at makng a pleasing presentation, if any at all - no concern whatsoever demonstrated for the person to whom it was being served other than expediency. The salmon and yellowtail had not even been cut thoroughly through, forcing me to pull the slices apart in order to eat them. The fish was too warm and not at all fresh-tasting. It was the worst I've ever had. If you decide to try Isamu as your first experience with sushi, please do not use Isamu as a gauge on which to judge the potential for enjoyment of sushi. This is not what a sushi restaurant should be. If you seek a good local sushi restaurant to enjoy prior to a Towne Crier concert I recommend going 10 minutes away to Fishkill where you can enjoy the fresh delicious fare and friendly service offered at Sushi Ya, a place that is consistently excellent, friendly and welcoming. We were talked into trying Isamu by friends and I deeply regret going there instead of to Sushi Ya. Our friends' company was the only thing that we enjoyed at Isamu. I will never go there again and recommend that you don't make the same mistake we did when we tried it. It's just lousy. read more

If I could have given negative I would have. The food actually is not that bad, and neither is the prices, but the service is horrendous. I have never in my life been treated so bad by staff. The waitress got mad at us for asking for forks and boxes. It was so bad that at one point my four friend and I just laughed. She threw boxes at us when she brought them, and when we tried to complain to the manager, he was just as rude and insisted that we pay. We are all professional women, and it was just an experienced that ruined our entire night. I would advice anyone not to go here, there are a lot better places in beacon that treat their customers with dignity and respect. read more

I really like Isamu and usually get sushi when I am here (which is delicious) but this past time I tried a Bento box that had one roll of sushi, salmon teriyaki, veggie tempura and rice. It was a nice sampler of different dishes. We also had the crab rangoon which were very good. Being from Hawaii where I am spoiled with awesome Japanese restaurants, I am always looking for an authentic Japanese restaurant close by. This restaurant is not even close to they calibre you find in Hawaii. First of all real Japanese sushi restaurants don't sell Chinese food. Second the bento boxes are not even close to what I have seen at better restaurants. They have very little options for their bento box and it's the typical selections. The sushi is "ok". It seems like I have been going to a lot of places like this lately - pan-Asian, serving mostly Chinese dishes, but with some Japanese classics (like sushi and teriyaki dishes) and a couple of Thai dishes (in this case Malaysian) included for good measure. I would guess these places are mostly owned and operated by Chinese people, and the food is usually good, but not exceptional. Isamu fits this mold, and offers a range of sushi rolls and sashimi options, along with bento boxes, Chinese standards, and noodle dishes. The tempura I ordered was crisp but a little bland. It is very unfortunate that the customer experience is effected by service and timing of bringing out the food. We went at 5pm on a Saturday night and it was not really busy and plenty of open tables. The food I thought was really good but you cannot really enjoy it because the wait staff and the kitchen have no clue about spacing out the timing of your appetizers and entrees, you have not even finished your appetizers or sushi and all the entrees arrive. We even gave the appetizer order well before we decided on the entrees. No matter they rush it all out to you where you cannot fit it all on the table. We've been here many times and it's generally good enough. The sushi is good. Some of the Chinese dishes are decent and the atmosphere is pleasant enough. One dish that I've always liked was their red snapper special...I've noticed the last few times, the fish seemed more like tilapia. The other night I ordered it again and it was definately tilapia...a far cheaper fish. It was also overly salty and swimming in soy sauce. Tonight on the news, their was a report from Oceana about this type of fraud in New York restaurants. Today i asked for gluten free soy sauce and she responded that they only have the packets, she then quickly looked passed me and took the order from another customer. Never had a bad meal. Used to frequent when we lived here... now when we return to Beacon this is the one place I must go to. Homemade dumplings are yummy! Worst restaurant in Beacon!!! I had the salmon donburi and all they gave me was 1 piece of salmon and HALF a cold, hard-boiled egg! The staff was rude and completely INCOMPETENT. They could NOT answer even the most basic English questions about the food and completely messed up my order. Even though I was only one of 3 tables, they brought me my check before I was finished eating. When I wanted to order more food because I was still hungry, they brought me my check again instead of a menu. When I finally got the menu and ordered more food, they brought my food out as a to-go order even after I specifically told them I wanted to eat it in the restaurant. Then they brought me my check again even though I wanted to order dessert. Overall, the food was bland and I hated the experience. If I could give this restaurant 0 stars, I would. I'm so disappointed with this place. I used to come regularly. I'm here with my child and husband after his graduation. We ordered before the rush came in. We did not order anything elaborate. Chicken and broccoli, chicken katsu and sushi. Why are we still here waiting for our food while everyone else is eating that came in after us. Guess what.. The woman that was taking the order was very rude and would not help me or explain the item I was trying to order. She was very unprofessional and impatient. I have many options for good Japanese food and don't need to be treated this way. If she was unable to understand what I was saying then she should have given the phone to a manager or possibly somebody who knows about customer service. I am quite surprised at some of the negative reviews. My husband and I come here at least once a week since the place opened. The fish is fresh, the sushi rolls are delicious--rolls have more fish than rice, which I think is always a plus. We've tried some of their Chinese food and Japanese entrees, while they are tasty--we always go for the sushi. Sure there may be a slight language barrier but the wait staff is always polite and it's not like they're trying to be rude. Having tried all the sushi places in the area, we were glad to finally find Isamu--personally we think all the other places are crappy in comparison. I would give it a shot! read more
