I came here for brunch on Saturday. We ordered a lot of different things. When I come to Beacon, I always walk past this place and I have always wanted to try it. We ordered the scallion pancakes, gyoza dumplings, wontons soup and for na entree the general tso chicken, sushi and sashimi and California roll. So let's start with the appetizers they were good. I enjoyed the gyoza dumplings and the scallion pancakes. The wonton soup was ok. The general tso chicken was overly sweet; usually general tso chicken has a nice balance of sweet and spicy. I asked for it to be crispy but the texture was a bit off; it has too much batter. My niece ordered the sushi sashimi and her salmon was oily and slimy; I think. I did not eat it but she didn't eat it neither. When we told the waitress she was very nice and took off that item from the bill. The service was great and the appetizers were good. My husband and I decided to come here after the Beacon Eats. We enjoyed the atmosphere inside the place. When my husband and I got the miso soup . He relazied that the cup was about to start heading to the floor. The level of the tables aren't the same am my table . His side of the table was leaning . His soup was all over him and the table. I'd suggest getting in some new tables to prevent any burns from happening. My husband and I decided to both get the same bento box. We were surprised at how big the bento boxes looked. It came with miso soup, garden salad with ginger sauce, and then our bento box. I didn't care for the fried vegetables. The white rice was a bit cold. Other than that, everything was overall good. As I walked inside this Japanese restaurant it is decorated in dark woods so I immediately felt like I was in a Japanese spa. I was immediately greeted and seated. I had stopped in for lunch and ordered a chicken udon soup and a small sake. My first time trying sake, I have nothing to compare to but I did enjoy it as it sat well in my stomach. The broth was light, fresh mushrooms, carrots and bok choy. There was half hard boiled egg. On the side was hot pepper oil to give my soup a kick. I also added soy sauce for added flavor. The bowl was a good size as I was able to finish it completely. Their restrooms are very clean and parking was a free city lot across the street. I ordered a chicken tempura roll but no where on the menu did it say that the roll has roe(fish eggs) which I can't eat. Instead of offering to remake it or offering an alternative the waitress acted as if she couldn't understand me and still charged me for it even though I didn't touch it at all. There seems to be the usual entrees Americans are familiar with: bento, American sushi, some Chinese favorites. Service is good, the place is clean, it's accessible for all. There's no liquor license, so BYOB. It seems they've been here since before the gentrification began. Maybe that's why they named it Isamu. Japanese for courage. Just moved to the area from Westchester and this was my first shot at takeout. Ordered via DoorDash and got Spring Rolls, Isamu Fried Rice and Egg Drop Soup. The Spring Rolls were somewhat tolerable but still not great tasting. The soup was excessively salty to the point of being inedible. The fried rice was just overall blah and not very flavorful while somehow also being a bit salty. Overall won't be ordering from here again, at least not any hot food - I might give the sushi a try since delivery pickings seem slim in the area. It's only been a couple weeks up here and I'm already desperately missing my good restaurants in Westchester! read more

Very prompt service here, and I will say, there very on top if you need anything and to ask if you enjoyed your meal. So for the food, best egg drop ever, it was light and warming. To often egg drop feels heavy, but here it's great. So got spicy crab caviar rolls, liked them, but wish it was bit more spicy, love a good punch of heat if it's spicy. Glad the rolls had a lot of crab in them, so not cheap on filling for sure. Now the Oyakodon, the fried chicken was crispy and crunchy with the chicken still very moist even after frying. Rice was perfect. But really wish the egg for this was either fried or a omelette blanket, a hard boiled egg was definitely not way to go with this dish and only half a hard boiled at that. read more

It was a very impromptu decision to go here, nonetheless we were pleased with our experience. I really only had issues with two things that I ordered, but it was two big things for me. The first is the overuse of avocado on the rolls. The avocado was sliced too big and overpowered the texture of the roll. My second was the ill prepared kani salad. Most places I've been to make sure the crab meat is shredded and mixed with spicy mayo. My kani salad came out lumped together which was not appealing, and doused with spicy mayo strips on top. A total presentation fail. As for the friendliness of the staff and cleanliness, my wife and I were impressed. I think this is a one and done for us but it's not a bad spot to try out. read more

I am giving two stars to our wonderful waitress, as for the food I will give a zero. We ordered two Special Sushi Rolls and They should be embarrassed to serve such punny and tasteless expensive rolls. For our main course, we ordered Chinese dishes. Pekin Duck which was a very small duck portion that was dry and burnt. I actually sent it back, not much improvement on the new dish. My husband ordered the Beef and Eggplant in garlic sauce, lots of eggplant, very little beef. Not great taste either. Our companion order Shrimp in Lobster sauce, it too was pretty much not what expected. It was literally floating in rice, the 4 or 5 shrimps were a decent size, the sauce was forgettable ! . I ordered the katsu Don and the dish wasn't what I was expecting, but not a bad meal either. I'm used to having mine with the egg over and onions, not green onions and a hard boiled egg. Lately I've been craving the basics, comfort foods, if you will. On that list would be piles of veggies (aka Buddha's Delight) and veggie sushi rolls. In fact that's almost all I've been eating for the past two weeks when eating in restaurants. Isamu fit the bill a couple nights ago when seeking Asian comfort food. They have a booming takeout business and if I lived within 5 minutes, I would likely be taking out from here on the regular. Dining in is fine, the space is large and open, not too bright nor cluttered. Love the large mural taking up one entire wall. I'm admittedly not one of those people who opt for eating at a sushi bar, but if that's you, it's small but decent and I appreciated the dark and changing colorful lighting behind it (disco sushi time!) As far as vegetarian/vegan options, if you appreciate and crave basic (I don't say basic like it's a bad thing), you won't be disappointed. There's a brief vegetables section and a couple veggie sushi rolls. Would I love more options? Yes. Did I love the vegetable delight (a huge pile of broccoli, bamboo shoots, water chestnuts, bok choy, carrots and tofu in a slightly spicy brown sauce) and tasty avocado cucumber rolls that I ordered? Absolutely. The wine and sake list is pretty limited, so don't come here with high expectations for that. I love Isamu. Some of if not the best sushi in Dutchess. It's in a cool area on Main Street in Beacon. The food is fresh and delicious and service is quick and polite. We love coming out for date nights late on Friday evenings. We always get a combination of different rolls and sashimi. Appetizers are awesome too - the tuna wasabi dumplings are highly recommended. Went there twice for dinner. First time was rolls, sushi, and sashimi. It was alright. Nothing spectacular. Second time was katsudon and other rolls. I think they missed the mark on the assignment with katsudon. Eggs are supposed to be incorporated into the don instead of half of a hard boiled egg. The rice was not short grain rice, but Chinese style rice (sorry, but I am very picky about rice). The texture was just incorrect. The pork was pounded to a quarter inch thickness and tasted extremely dry (it's 33% meat and rest is dough coating), but I guess I won't complain about this part since it's under $14. Feels like someone just saw the ingredients list and think this is what it should be like. If it was just sushi, I'd give it 3.5-4 stars, but katsudon deserves 1.5-2. So this is an average. But hey, my family likes Japanese food and this city isn't really a Beacon (sorry, but this was a low hanging fruit) for culinary arts when it comes to most Asian food. Put order in for 5:45 pickup. When I arrived, they had me pay the $130 and left me at the counter. A few minutes later I asked where my food was and was told it would be 10-20 minutes more. I finally got my food at 6:15. The food: first they left out one item in my order. Second, the Unagi was dried and tasted terrible, like it was old. Third, the rest of the order was bland, and the textures were not pleasant. I was very disappointed sindce I love sushi and this place was recommended. This is the best sushi place in the Beacon/Coldspring/Peekskill area! There aren't very many places to choose from but I highly recommend you Samu. I always get takeout from here and head over to the river to eat my sushi with the sound of the water. They are quick and you can conveniently order take out on yelp. Smaller scale sushi spot tucked into Main Street of beacon. If you drive by too fast you might just miss it! Came in an on a weekend afternoon and brother and I were the first ones here. A little on the chilly side in the venue and it took until almost the finale of our meal to feel any heat so that takes away a star. I got the chance to visit Isamu today for lunch, and I am very glad that I did! I haven't found any great sushi in the Hudson Valley area since visiting here, and after today, I look forward to coming back for more from here! Isamu is a modestly sized restaurant in downtown Beacon, NY that focuses on both Chinese and Japanese cuisine including an ample selection of sushi. The decor of the restaurant is very soothing and calm, with a large wall mural, clean lacquered tables, and natural plants situated around the dining area. I definitely felt relaxed while dining here, and it's a great place to come for a casual lunch or dinner. The food is just as comforting, from steaming bowls of udon noodles to a very unexpectedly tasty grilled squid. Speaking of the grilled squid: fans of calamari rejoice! This is a must-order starter at Isamu. It's very tender and melts in your mouth, and is served with a teriyaki style glaze. The grilled squid was my favorite thing I tried at today's lunch, and I highly recommend it! I also loved the wonton soup I had as a starter. The chicken broth base is flavorful and complex, and the pork dumplings are soft and hearty. You may not even need much more after these two things, but take a peek at the sushi menu for creative and tasty sushi rolls! I went both traditional, with a well made rainbow roll, and kooky with an Oceanista Roll, which was wrapped in cucumber for my sushi picks. Both were yummy and VERY filling. If you're in the mood for Chinese, I heard rave reviews for the chicken katsu from friends I was dining with. I'll have to try that next time! I'm disappointed in the food I ordered today. the sesame chicken: tough pieces of fried chicken with a gelatinous red sauce poured all over it. I ate a few bites and had to through it away. the fried won ton was hard and chewy and also unedible. the cost of the food was high considering the poor quality. Not recommended to anyone. read more

Sit at the bar and order away I've been a regular here at all hours of the day. The business has ranged from packed to i'm the only one at the sushi bar wondering how the hell they get the caviar in different colors when they comes from the same fish. (he won't tell me, and i dont care anymore) ONE thing remains constant and that is the quality if the food; Marvelous. The wait staff seems to always change out (the sushi chef and the lady who i imagine to be of the managerial sort are always present) but they are always on hand to change out your dishes and keep the water fresh. If you're with a party feel free to order a few apertifs and do include the grilled squid which is very good, its not chewy or rubbery, its crispy around the extremes and the body has a perfect consistancy (no fishy taste for those wondering) the steamed dumplings are of good size and a very flavorful. one of the nce things about sitting at the bar is you get a courtside look at your sushi getting prepped which is always entertaining. the master chef enjoys chatting with you and will help you make a selection or two ( I always pick a few from the special rolls ) anyway, the place is really nice, clean and the food really stands out. read more

While we were walking inside the shushi chef was taking nap in Sushi Bar, a lady was talking on phone with customers. 5 mnts later she took us far corner table. 2 other servers Came out and took our order right way. The soup was very hot and delicious, short ribs were little over cooked and was chewy, seaweed salad was fresh and crunchy then Naruto was good. We ordered 2 special roles and seafood teriyaki, some yellow tail shushi and 2 hand rolls. The fish was fresh and the best hand roll. He said it was not the best in the world, but still worth getting again if you're walking along Main Street. Prices are average for a Japanese restaurant. The place was dim lit and clean. Not much to complain about. I really enjoyed the Godzilla roll. The homemade chicken dumplings were very tasty, and you can immediately tell their homemade from the dough. Pretty good place, seems to be a lot better when they are not busy. Sometimes they are a tad extreme with the white pepper, but overall good place to eat. My favorite is the Teriyaki Salmon and the fired rice. read more
