After navigating several tours up and down main street in Beacon, we finally found the Japanese character atop a building representing Isamu. As we entered, we couldn't help but notice the sign on the window stating "Bring your own booze (BYOB), Liquor license pending". This immediately prompted us to carry in 2 bottles of red wine. Upon entrance, the place was half packed and the ambiance was rather culturally traditional. Ceilings were high and Japanese characters overlay the back wall like wallpaper. First impressions were satisfactory especially after the first glass of wine. For starters, we ordered the edamame and salads. the edamame was average and the ginger salad dressing was consistent with other places that i've dined. The Miso soup was fair as if it was taken straight out of the "Universal" Miso soup pot that all Japanese restaurants serve from. My first impression of the menu was that it had limited options for special sushi rolls. The special rolls were middle class and nothing particularly stood out as unique. After completing the first bottle of Pinet Noir "Knarley Head" we were in the right spirits to place our order. my order consisted of a spicy tuna roll, tuna sashimi and a Godzilla roll consisting of tuna, tempura crunch, avacado, and a mystery flavor not recognizable. I didn't realize I ordered so much tuna until I began writing this reflection. I must note that after ordering, we did not receive our food until an hour later. Usually this suggests a busy night, overwhelming order, or a detail oriented Sushi chef, but unfortunately these extraneous events were non existent. An hour later we were finally served. As I poured my soy sauce from the fancy table vase, I couldn't help but notice the shallow, undersized soy dish provided for sushi dipping. I know this may seem miniscule, and picky, but dipping a GODZILLA roll into this shallow pool of soy was like trying to fit a beach ball into a basketball hoop. The sushi was moderately artistic, scored about 7 out of 10 on roll tightness (togetherness), and quite flavorable. The spicy tuna roll lacked the spice that my pallet craves, but was fresh and original. By that time, we were finished with our second bottle of wine so my inhibitions were slightly affected. After our mediocre entree, our dessert was a bill for 4 people under $100. At that moment the topic of conversation related to other places we could go that supported BYOB. Overall the experience was satisfactory. The ambiance was good and service from the waitress was consistent. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a middle of the road tuna roll, and a cheap buzz. On a positive note this place is located right next to a sports bar so you can have an after dinner beer and catch the end of the Yankee game. read more
