We got a table around 6pm on a Saturday without a wait, but the limited outdoor seating quickly filled up after that. The service was amazing. The highlight of course was the delicious Filipino food! We got the sizzling sisig, lechon kawali, and ginataang langka for 2 of us but had a little bit leftover. The sizzling sisig was pork ears and mouth with lemon, jalapeños, and an egg served on a hot plate. The lechon kawali was deep fried crispy pork with a liver sauce on the side. The ginataang langka was jackfruit cooked with shrimp and coconut milk. I'd never had jackfruit cooked like this before, but it was creamy, sweet, slightly spicy, and a tasty contrast to the other fatty dishes. I don't know how we still had room after that enormous meal, but we finished with halo halo, a dessert made with shaved ice, boiled sweetened white beans, mixed fruit, and milk. I had hoped there would be ice cream served with it, but there wasn't. My partner loved the halo halo but I may pass on it next time and try a different dessert. My Filipino family and I have lived in Queens for 22 years now, and my mom mentioned casually the last time we had dinner here that the same waiters who joked with us and chatted with us as they poured us water and took our photo are the same people who have been working here since she first ate here. And I think that's beautiful, and speaks to the kind of place Ihawan is. As someone who grew up in Queens surrounded by Filipino restaurants like Ihawan, but now lives in Chicago, this is exactly the kind of place I imagine when I think of Filipino restaurants. Lowkey, warm friendly places where the people working and running the place are Filipinos who speak Tagalog to you and each other, and a lot of the other customers are Filipino too. It feels like home. Their food is good too. I love their lumpiang sariwa - a fresh spring roll with lettuce and a sweet brown sauce I adore, and as someone who's had lumpiang sariwa at a lot of Filipino gatherings and restaurants, this is one of the better ones. Besides that, we got the kamayan platter for 4, which is served on a banana leaf. Originally, kamayan is meant for feasts and everybody eats with their hands (kamay = hand in Tagalog), but here in New York, that's less required. The kamayan platter for 4 included lumpiang shanghai (a staple Filipino dish of fried pork spring rolls), a bowl of pinakbet/pakbet (mixed vegetables, also one of my faves), a smoky fried fish, shrimp, and barbeque. However, on this visit, I thought most of our pork dishes were overcooked; albeit still pretty tasty. On a positive note, they really cleaned up the look of the restaurant and it seems a little brighter and less "divey". (But honestly, I've never gone here for their ambiance; it was always for their fantastic pork dishes). Service and hospitality has also improved! Very accommodating and pleasant. A trip to New York means to stop by Woodside/Queens area for Ihawan. Ihawan means grill and their food here is bomb if you're craving Filipino food. They're known for their skewers but you can't go wrong with any of the dishes they have on the menu. The Lechon Kawali was super crispy, BBQ's marinade was delicious, and Lumpia (egg rolls) were just okay. They also offer boodle fights if you want to sample a little bit of everything. Make sure to call ahead for your orders because the wait time can be long. The staff here is nice and shoutout to the Tita taking orders at the front. This is the only Filipino place that my family and I come back to often and it's close to my mom's cooking! read more

Came here for a boodle fight and left a loser, we had a large party and so the square trays were not ideal. The food was mediocre, and the service was horrendous. They made such an effort to be sure not to notice diners seeking their attention. Definitely not worth it. There are a lot of better places in Jackson Heights and in the city that offer noodle fights with excellent service. This is my favorite go-to restaurant for Filipino food. I used to date a Filipino American and even he said their food tastes pretty authentic. Interesting thing about this restaurant is, the restaurant dining area is actually upstairs and downstairs is where the kitchen is. This is interesting because at first glance, you would think you walked into the wrong place because all you see are display cases with a la carte items for takeout. This is a no-frills casual spot where you can enjoy lunch (which is usually when I go). I was very surprised when they gave us knives to cut with because I'm used to only having spoon and fork when eating Filipino food. To me, BBQ is food for the soul. Eating anything off the grill brings me inexplicable satisfaction. I almost always order the same thing (as you probably can tell from the photos). Their chicken BBQ, which essentially is a piece of grilled chicken thigh (boneless and skinless) is AMAZING. It is sweet and juicy and I like dipping it in the pickled vinegar juice it comes with - if you like Vietnamese grilled pork chops, this is very similar so trust me, you will most definitely like this as well. And I am a sucker when it comes to a good piece of crispy, fatty pork belly and Ihawan knows what they're doing when it comes to lechón. The only place I've been to that can compete is Kystal's cafe. This is a very good place to try Filipino food, and I was here alone for brunch. I ate a lot and enjoyed it. Service was attentive and friendly. They cook upon order, and so you have to wait a bit for you to finally eat. It is not my first time here. They are partly hidden from the main road where you hear the 7 train passing by, and on the 2nd floor. I understand you can also order to go from their space by the ground floor. Typically, if you want to host a "Kamayan night", it'd be in your best interest to coordinate several days in advance. So my friend calls and the chefs laugh "hahaha we can do it the same day, we specialize in that shit". If anyone is unfamiliar, Kamayan Night is an event in which platters of food are served on banana leaves and are meant to be eaten with nature's forks: your hands. They handed us utensils anyway because we looked like uncultured scrubs and yeah, I'm not too offended because some people at my table had questionable table manners... Jesse Flores (I hope your future employers find this). Anywho, for $20ish you get: a mountain of rice, a deep fried butterflied fish, steamed eggplants, bits of pork fried by the fires of hell, more fried pork but marinaded in some Filipino BBQ ketchup sauce, and calamari. Oh and vegetables but who cares about that? I didn't particular enjoy any dish especially; they all felt casual quality, except for the fried pork, which was overtly dry. Amazing Filipino food ! They are known for their bbq and skewers! So definitely come for those, not only do they have bbq but they have your typical Filipino food as well. Palabok pancit and sigsig. Definitely don't get shy when ordering a dish you have no idea about, I'm usually cautious but the food here is delicious ! Everything that comes out of that kitchen is just pure home-y Filipino cooking. I also heard that the avocado smash(?) or slushy was famous. They give you a purée avocado mixture with condensed and shaved ice. You mix the whole thing yourself which is kinda fun especially for kids. I was introduced to Ihawan many years ago by once of my friends. Since at the time I never had Filipino food before she took us here. Now returning years later we are glad to see they still serve our favorites. You have to enter from the main door of the takeout area to go upstairs to the restaurant area. Depending how busy they are, you may have to wait from pat experience. My sister and I's usual go to for mains are the kare-kare and sizzling sisig. The kare kare is tender oxtail in a savory peanut sauce with chopped chinese eggplant and string beans. It is usually served with shrimp paste on the side to put on top if the ox tail, if desired. The shrimp paste has an interesting play of senses when it hits your tongue, like a sweet and salty sensation that goes well with the oxtail. The sizzling sisig is chopped up pigs ears which I know may not sound as appetizing, but it is well seasoned with pepper, jalapeño and lemon that it makes it delicious. Since my husband was with us and is not as open to trying unusual food items that stray away from your typical American foods, we tired a new dish- the beef kaldereta which was a beef stew in a tomato base sauce. He really enjoyed that one since it had more familiar flavors to his palate. In addition we usually get the melon drink (sweet drink with cantaloupe) and the halo-halo. The halo-halo was filled with lots of sweet beans, banana and jackfruit at the bottom. We usually have good service here from the staff who are welcoming and willing to give suggestions or answer any questions you may have. This place easily accessible by subway by taking the 7 train one stop west of the Roosevelt Ave stop. Parking can sometimes be tricky to find, so you may find yourself circling for a bit. read more

Been to many Filipino restaurants but we officially declare Ihawan been our favorite. Visited twice and both times food was to our expectations. We find other Filipino restaurants food more greasy but Ihawan gave us a home cook sensuality. The best first experience having their Kamayan for 2. It was enough to fit 4. All the food on the banana leave was so good and complimented each other so well. Still love their shrimp paste dip. We dogged all down like hungry dogs. The best part was it was not greasy. Our family love this place and will keep Ihawan our first choice to diner with for Filipino food. But too bad they close at 8ish everyday. Way too early but that's what makes this restaurants stand out from other resturants. Not to mention at our twice visits service was so great. Very attentive and willing to answer all the questions. Sample everything in their Kamayan platter for two and top off with sizzling sisig and maybe throw in an order of lopsinga sausages if you still have room. For those who love a sweet finisher, get the halo halo and be ready to have your sugar level sky rocket thru the roof. We've eaten at the restaurant previously but found that we always stick to the bbq. We've tried the chicken adobo and the kare kare but didn't think they were fantastic (since the first time we tried it was at a friend's house where it was homecooked!). This place is cheap and serves good quality food but the nearby places around the corner like Renees Kitchenette are just as good. Portions at Ihawan are slightly smaller too from my experience. And compared to those other ones, Ihawan is more of a hole in the wall. It is not as clean and the decor leaves much to be desired. If you do come, stick to the BBQ, which is what they are known for. After two year went back here again. When you first walk inside they will ask for your vaccine card and Id. The room is very spaced out with those screen block for each table. The staff is very friendly. The service is pretty fast. We order our usually Plater for 6 with some vegetable and pig knuckle and of course order some halo halo dessert. The foods came pretty fast. For something deep fried, I'd expect it to be oily hot. Although relieved that I didn't burn my tongue, I was very disappointed as well.. it was luke warm at best. The restaurant upstairs is not bad, food is good, service is ok. I been to this place more than few times. I Have celebrated my gf's birthday and my birthday in this place. My gf is a big fan of this place, but the past few times that we have ordered from the to go area downstairs, have not been so positive. I can make peace with the long waiting, I understand it's a busy place, but cheating us of the portion is not fair. Service downstairs is not too welcoming, but perhaps its because they all are cooks and do the serving at the same time, maybe it's not fair for them either. I personally believe that the Kare kare taste better at a small join in queens Blvd called Sarilin Atin. But again, my gf thinks Ihawan's kare kare tastes better. When I've got a Filipino food fix and no one in the house is in the mood to cook this is a solid staple in the rotation. Seating is outside and limited, so plan accordingly. I also saw recently they added umbrellas which is a nice touch. It's a little tight (limited sidewalk space), but it works. Typically we take away from here. Last we were here there was a bit of a wait for our order which a little annoying as the line started to build and there's nowhere else to be, as the seated tables are all in the same "waiting" area. Turon is solid, BBQ is awesome, halo-halo, sagu, the whole she-bang. You won't be disappointed. read more

Went here to preorder food over the holidays of 2020! I am grateful that they are open during the pandemic. The order-by-phone despite it being a holiday was a breeze. The pick up was smooth despite the line that we encountered. It was understandable given the time. I ordered rellenong bangus and turon. The rellenong bangus was traditionally made in my opinion and it truly is one of those holiday filipino dishes that I just need to have. I am glad to have found this restaurant who made it quite well! of course the turon was so divine and remained crispy even the next day. That was awesome.
