Mixed Fried Calamari and Shrimp
Alexsis A.

So, the layout requires you to determine whether you're sitting upstairs or downstairs. Then, you go straight to the market to pick out any fish, octopus, squid, mussels, shrimp or items you can't see like crab legs or lobster. We chose an African harvested shrimp that was huge! We had it prepared their traditional way. When we sat at a table, we chose from the $19.99 Lunch Menu (which is served daily from 12-4). Mixed Shrimp and Calamari and the Shrimp and scallops linguine. The best dish was the linguine. It was flavorful and without oil or butter. LOVED IT! Oh, I almost forgot about the fresh bread served with the sides I chose. Which were the cucumber salad and lemon potatoes. If you're looking for alcohol this restaurant doesn't serve it at all. Which was a pleasant surprise. I ordered the cucumber, mint lemonade and it was surprisingly ice cold without ice and refreshing. I loved it! Now, truthfully speaking the service wasn't the best. I'd have to say that the fresh market Manager was very helpful. He turned the tv on and showed pictures of every dish and took the time to explain how we could switch things up. I thought that was a nice touch. As far as our waitress, not the absolute best service. Because she was managing many tables at once and didn't return to ask if we needed anything. Asking for ice was like running in a race. We flagged down anyone who would listen.

One of the first tasks you need to do unpon entering is to choose from the selection of seafood on the ice counters and in the tank. This is half the fun! We picked scallops, octopus, a whole red snapper and giant prawns between a group of five of us. We then went to our table and ordered a salad and mezze plate to go with it. The food was delicious! Everything was nicely seasoned with spices, succulent and flavorful. The green lemonade was also yummy - we got a pitcher to share. I've heard it can be really busy, we were prepared to wait but when we visited on a Sunday around noon it was quiet with no wait.

Came by for their lunch special. We ordered grilled shrimp and calamari, tiger shrimp grilled, fried shrimp and calamari, and pasta with shrimp and scallops. All accompanied by 2 sides per order. The flavors were robust and light. The serving size was filling, consider it was a lunch special. The service was great.

I stopped by for the lunch special, which is a pretty good deal ! $19.99 - main / 2 sides. The Salmon was just ok , nothing special . My sides were the Hamido salad which was good, and the lemon potatoes - they were amazing. Service is ok , very "cafeteria" like.

This place is AMAZING!! If you are looking for a seafood spot that feels more like an experience than just a meal, Hamido is definitely the one. The concept is so cool, you're not ordering off a menu. You walk up to a seafood counter, pick your fish or shellfish and choose how you want it cooked. It's interactive, a little chaotic, but all part of the charm. Fair warning: We went Friday night and it was packed, waited around an hour and the whole process can feel a bit hectic-- but honestly it's worth it once the food hits the table. The seafood is impressive. Everything tasted incredibly fresh. Some of my absolute favorites were: - King Crab: rich, sweet, perfectly cooked (my personal fav) - Lobster: fresh and flavorful - Grilled shrimp: juicy smoky, done just right - Scallop: tender and tasty - Calamari fritti: crispy, light and addictive Sides like lemon potatoes and Greek salad round everything out and make it perfect for sharing. Also the mint lemonade is outstanding and very refreshing. Overall, Hamido is one of those places you go for freshness, flavors and energy. It may not be the most relaxed dining experience, but it's definitely one of the most satisfying. If you're craving seafood that feels straight from the market to your plate, this spot absolutely delivers.

I absolutely loved the food here, it is so fresh. You choose the seafood you want and tell them how you want it cooked. Then you go and sit down and wait till they bring you the food. If it is really packed, ask the hostess for a number for a table. The staff was really nice and the food was delicious. Will come again for sure. Ambiance was moderate. Not crazy loud, but not quiet either. Good place for a date.

Lemon potatoes, beet salad, shrimp bisque, and mint lemonade without sugar

This spot landed on my Must Try list thanks to Instagram hype, so my expectations were reasonably high. Unfortunately, the experience didn't quite live up to the visuals. The first letdown: they were out of the tiger shrimp on the lunch menu, which immediately narrows the excitement. What did arrive felt small in portion for the price point, especially considering this is positioned as a destination-worthy spot. The beets were beautifully presented but completely underseasoned--no depth, no contrast, just... there. A missed opportunity. On the bright side, the shrimp bisque was excellent--rich, comforting, and easily the standout dish of the meal. Credit where it's due. I also ordered the mint lemonade, which was refreshing but seriously overpriced for what it was. One of those moments where you pause and ask yourself if the glass came with extra mint leaves and a story. Service, however, was a strong point. The waitstaff was very attentive, warm, and professional, which absolutely elevated the experience and is the reason this isn't a one-star review. Overall: not terrible, not memorable. I'm glad I tried it, but I'm not rushing back. If you're curious because of social media buzz, manage expectations--and maybe go specifically for the bisque.

The food and service were amazing. We sat upstairs and the music was blasting. Couldn't hear the person next to me, let alone anyone else at the table. My favorite was the scallop - OMG, so good! Oh, I was not a fan of the mixed appetizers-- not enough flavor for me.

Hamido is an amazing seafood spot in Queens with fresh fish and great Egyptian seasonings. They have a large two story location now, so it was easier to get a table than I expected. The original location is across the street and is doing carry-out only. The man at the counter is knowledgeable and gave great recommendations. He helped us decide on what to order from the many options. There was a happy hour menu that came with a main and two sides, but the dishes we wanted were not included on that so we ordered à la carte. We ordered the red snapper, scallops, fried calamari, and a giant prawn. Everything was so good, but the standout for me was the giant prawn. The snapper was also really well done and a must-order. For sides we had fries and the cucumber salad, the sides are solid but not the star. They put down fresh pita bread which is amazing but we were so full from our mains that we did not have much. Overall, if you like seafood you really need to try this place out. I would love to go again because it was a special experience.

This spot was MP Taverna years ago and now has been transformed into a pick-your-own seafood restaurant. It's similar to Astoria Seafood with Mediterranean tastes, but goes further east with an Egyptian twist. On this night, our timing was good and we were lucky to arrive at IBNHS just before 9pm after picking up my BIL from LGA and got a free parking space right outside the restaurant. The dinner rush was winding down, the line was reasonably short and we still had plenty of time to enjoy our dinner. Get your table number from the host at the front, go to the back to pick out your fresh seafood chilling on ice and get shown to your table. We had a table upstairs by the window overlooking Ditmars Blvd. Being our first time, our eyes were bigger than our stomachs and chose our favorites: One pound each of Squid, Scallops, Octopus, Tiger Shrimp and a 1.4 lb whole Bronzini. I was tempted get a whole lobster from the tank, but held back. At our table, we ordered drinks and side dishes: A pitcher of Spiced Mint Lemonade, Hamido Salad, Lemon Potatoes, Seasoned Fries, Garlic Eggplant and 2x Seyadya Rice. Everything came at a fast clip, starting with Fried Calamari and soon dishes overflowed the table. I had to consolidate a few plates as each dish showed up. A little overwhelmed, I tried everything. The calamari was nicely breaded, crispy and flavored just right with a marinara dipping sauce. The scallops were perfectly seasoned & seared and for 1.1 lbs there were 16 of them, an even split for 4 people. The Grilled Tiger Shrimp were my favorite with a good char and seasoning. The Grilled Octopus was thinly sliced, not whole like I was expecting, but was still pretty good. I had specified the Bronzini to be plain grilled whole by one of 2 methods chosen by the picture on the wall, but it came out butterflied & coated in spices. If you read the signs, all seafood have a $4/lb added to the base price for cooking, but the butterflying was an additional $4 on top of that. Overall, it was a very good meal with the freshest seafood you can get.

We were craving for good seafood, which has quality taste and reasonably priced, and we found it at this place.

Must visit for the fresh seafood! Like a couple of other places in Astoria, you are able to pick your own seafood that they then cook for you. Went on a Saturday night, and only had to wait 15 minutes for a table. This new location is much bigger with more ample seating. After picking your seafood (with the help of staff), you also get to pick the cooking style for each protein! We got grilled shrimp, oven baked fish, fried calamari and more. Overall, everything was tasty but don't leave this place without trying the Grilled Tiger Prawns/shrimp and fried calamari. Service was quick and friendly too. Would also recommend coming with friends to try a larger variety of seafood. Keep in mind it can be pricey but the taste, freshness of the food is worth it.

Amazing experience at Hamido this week. Food was amazing, service was friendly, glad we came early because the place was packed by the time we were leaving. You walk up to the seafood counter and pick out whatever you want to eat. The guy asked you how you want it cooked. Then you go upstairs and order sides and other dishes. Such a fun concept. Put food was amazing. Scallops and octopus were perfectly grilled. Sardines were spicy and fried. The side dishes were also good - especially the beets. The space was vibrant and welcoming and so much fun.

What day is the best day to come to your restaurant?

When I go is during the week,on the weekends it's busy, also during the summer the tourist come to enjoy a meal and it get packed.

Will you be accepting orders from uber eats or Grubhub anytime in the future?

Hi. Do you guys take reservations, especially if we're celebrating a special occasion?

Unfortunately we don’t only walk in

Salaam. Do you have an Islamic prayer area? Thanks in advance.

Salaam, Unfortunately not in the restaurant however there’s a mosque right behind the restaurant literally

I don't see alcohol on the menu. Is this place BYOB or is alcohol not an option?

It's BYOB! Enjoy!

What oil is used for cooking? I have a seed & nut allergy

I doubt if any oil is used to broil the lobster. Although they keep their recipe a secret, I would call them and ask.

Is it BYOB?

Yes it is

Is the spice mix they use on all their dishes gluten free? Wondering if they use flour or bread crumbs. Thanks!

the only thing we use flour on is the fried dishes

The staff are so welcoming and warm it's like being served by friends and family. The seafood options here seem bigger than other places, though they didnt have my favorite octopus on this day. There's also a huge variety of sides to pick from. The only con I can possibly name is that we both smelled so strongly like fried calamari after dining here that I could only smell calamari on our clothes at our new year's party several hours later! Maybe poor ventilation or just a very busy day. Cannot wait to come back to Astoria Seafood. Very casual dining experience - a must for seafood lovers no frills and great value.

You can order hot, readymade foods and/or grab a plastic bag and pick your seafood at the raw bar (an array of whole fish, fish fillets, squid, octopus, crab legs, squid, shrimp, lobster tails etc.). I picked out 4 squids and 6 scallops that ran me $21. They allow you to choose how the seafood will be cooked-- I fried my calamari and grilled my scallops. The fried calamari was the best calamari I've had. It was meaty inside and tender, with not too much breading, paired with yummy tartar sauce. Weirdly, when the scallops were served to me, there was 1-2 missing. Um ok? It was bathed in olive oil and was scrumptious. Overall, the seafood was super fresh and tasted amazing. I have to come back to try grilled octopus and whole fish! Also, the server lady was nice knowing it was my first time there, but as I was leaving the joint, she solicited me for tip, telling me that "tip was not included in the price paid". Weirded out, I gave her a $5 bill, and looked up the reviews of this place to find that sometimes the servers will approach you for tip and have even been known to chase you down the block if you leave without tipping. Super weird, but whatever, they work hard I guess. I'd come back... for now.
