Tucked away in an older strip mall, the place has been nicely remodeled and is spacious and comfortable. The Food: We started with a calamari appetizer. Tempura batter was fairly crisp and the squid reasonably tender. The sweet/sour sauce had a nice bite. We both had filet and lobster hibachi grilled entrée. Dinner came with a broth soup (interestingly, beef broth), a side salad with a creamy ginger dressing, a medley of grilled vegetables (carrots, broccoli, squash, mushrooms and onions) and fried rice (she had fried noodles). The filet and lobster were good, but not outstanding ... medium rare meat grilled a little too long (not really seared fast), had no pink and was a little chewy for tenderloin beef ... the lobster, although cut in pieces when grilled (as expected) the pieces were on the small side and, like the filet, not as tender as we prefer. Not bad mind you, but not exceptional. Positives: Neat and clean. We were promptly served on a Sunday evening with a moderate size dinner crown already in place. (Tip: Expect a few minutes wait to sit at the ever popular hibachi grill.) Staff was very prompt, polite and professional. Food presentation was well above average. お絞り (o-shibori i.e. hot, wet towels) delivered to the table upon being seated ... very nice. Several varieties of sake to from which to choose. Duck spoons were made of ceramic (not plastic). Many young families with kids at the hibachi grills (we saw four grills) who were having a very good time with the theatrics! Minuses: Prices are pretty high. Twenty-eight bucks apiece for the main course. This is about eight bucks more than a petite sirloin and lobster tail at Ruby Tuesday, and the food quality was not appreciably better. Also, we felt very rushed. (We know, it's a fine line between good service and rushed service.) Appetizer was delivered promptly at which time the entrée order was taken. Salad and soup arrived at the table before two bites of the appetizer had been taken. Entrées arrived moments later. What to eat first? What to let get cold? This is not a major upset (better than tardy or neglectful service, and maybe it is related to the fact that the place caters to many young military families with more energy and less time than we have). 箸 (hashi i.e. chopsticks) had to be requested ... forks were on the table. Bottom line, not bad for a Midwestern town near a military base, but not exceptional. The prices in comparison to food quality hold this review down to three stars. read more

We came to visit our son who's stationed at FLW. Coming from Houston, TX we didn't have high expectations on finding great sushi in such a small town. The good news is we found one (Glassico) the bad news is it wasn't at Ichiban. The Sashimi was decent but the sushi wasn't. Too much mayonnaise based sauce all over the sushi and they went for quantity (large over sized pieces) over quality. We had two signature (chef) rolls, some sashimi and were out. On NYE, I went here with my friends. There was only four of us so we ended up sharing a hibachi table with two other parties. The food was great and everything went smoothly. I'll start with the food - it was delicious. However, after an hour wait being told it would 15 to 20 minutes upon arrival at 6 pm was quite a blow to the experience. Our initial request was for Hibachi over the traditional dining experience but during our extended wait we realized we would be seated with a family of four who had a screaming child who the parent had taken outside twice already because of her out of control behavior. Don't worry about the shoes the child kicked off in the middle of the floor as the mom dragged her out. When the manger told us we would be seated for Hibachi dinning and it would be with that family (the only other waiting customer at that time).... Really?!? So here's my deal. Ichiban makes amazing sushi for the area but ouch does it hit your wallet hard. And if you are ordering from regular role that's around 5 bucks, skinniest roles I've ever bought. Nice ambiance, service is great, but for the price you get very little food and the food is tooooo salty. I'm a super healthy person and this messes up my system. The next morning I'm unable to put on my wedding ring. Plus, I feel like their food is full with MSG, with makes one addictive and requires the body to grave it over and over. Called and made reservations for 7 for a birthday dinner arrived and ended up having to squeeze 7 people in a corner with three behind the cook it's a Hibachi mind you so I paid way to much for members of my party to sit with the cooks butt in their face the whole time. This place is so dope, we went to this place after my brothers graduation and trust me that kitchen inside this place is fantastic. After spending 10 weeks in BCT, it was actually an awesome experience for my brother and kinda mind relieving experience as well. Ichiban is a godsend, especially to those who are used to having a ton of good sushi restaurants within a 5mi radius (I'm from Seattle). I've been to Ichiban a handful of times (4-5 occasions), and have been pleased every single time. I've taken part in both the regular restaurant seating and the Hibachi seating, which by the way is very entertaining! THE FOOD: I am a big nigiri and sashimi guy and the fish is always pretty fresh and delicious! I've ordered salmon, tuna, yellowtail, super white tuna, and Japanese snapper sushi, which were all great! On a side note, don't consume too much super white tuna, which is otherwise known as "escolar," because escolar (a type of snake mackerel) cannot metabolize the wax esters naturally found in its diet -- this leads to excessive oil in the fish and can lead to gastrointestinal symptoms (make sure you're near a bathroom!) I've also had the pork katsu and chicken teriyaki, which are pretty difficult to cook poorly. THE SERVICE: The waitresses and waiters here are phenomenal! They're very genuine in their actions and they are very friendly -- props to the management for creating such a positive atmosphere! I will definitely come to Ichiban time and time again. The restaurant atmosphere is great as it is multi-dimensional due to its Hibachi grill, sushi bar, alcohol bar, and regular booth/table seating. I like the interior design of the place as well!
