The saving grace for this place is the food. The sushi was really good. The appetizers were good as well. Can't fault them on their main reason for being there - the food. But holy sh*t how NOT sushi restaurant feel can you get? Little to no ambiance, the server/waiter left little to be desired, and there was a reason the place wasn't even quite half full on a Saturday night at 6:30pm. We must have had a totally different experience than anyone else giving this place two thumbs up. The server was not attentive, drinks went un-refilled, and there was a 'I don't want to be working here right now' vibe. Don't take this the wrong way, and I apologize if it sounds like the way it's said, but this is a Rolla restaurant. Don't expect any more than that. If you like sushi then this is your place for the food. Don't expect the whole sushi experience. Oh, and don't ask for a to-go drink. They don't offer those. read more

I was surprised to find this place in Rolla of all places as I'm here on a rotation for school. Really good sushi overall. Got something with spicy Mayo which I don't love but I think it works. The sunset roll and New York and bulgogi rolls were all delicious. The New York roll was so fresh and delicious. Hope they're still fresh after being in the fridge overnight. I've been here several times now and each time has been nothing more than mediocre. There's not many other Asian establishments in Rolla so this will have to do. Their bento box is probably going to be your best bet. The sushi rolls are a bit dry. I had their bibimbap dish and the "spicy" sauce was bland. I'll give them a 4 star because service is typically good and their food isn't terrible. But it's also not amazing! However, it's better than eating at a fast food joint in town! read more

Came in with my nephew on a Thursday. With covid you have to wear a mask entering and leaving. The space is quaint with beautiful japanese decor. Was a bit slow service in the beginning, they served one side before they came to the other. They were pretty popular that night had a lot of takeout orders. Miso came out first tasted like a general miso. Was cold there so I am happy the miso came out first to warm me up. Deep fried soft-shell crab came out with all the food just as I asked. This is the first soft-shell crab that I've had that was actually thoroughly cooked. Made correctly. Fully edible. White tuna and smoked salmon nigiri perfection. These are a couple of my fave fish. Nephew had the tobiko cali roll and regular cali roll. He enjoyed it. Bibimpap barely touched this the sushi won over my stomach. But ate it for lunch the next day it was great! Just like the memories when my oma makes it in TX. Uni (sea urchin) try to love it but the texture is too slimy for me. I still ate both. Samanco enjoyed this! Was full so i took it to go and ate melted version when I got home. Yes it was slow at the start but they also only have 1 waitress. She's super sweet, polite, and attentive. It's a small town so they get a little bit of a pass. Imitation crab in all the rolls. Bland everything--were I blindfolded I couldn't have been able to tell the difference between any of the sashimi pieces. My server wasn't good at all-she was incredibly curt with every response, bordering on rude. What kind of sake do you have? "I don't know. It's sake." Do you ever get toro in? "What's that?" (You work in a sushi restaurant and don't know what toro is?) Is this piece my flying fish roe? "I don't know." And then doesn't offer to find out. And doesn't. I finally get around to the bill with her. "I could bring it." She doesn't. I ask again. "I could bring it but it would be easier to just go up to the counter" (Points at counter. Walks away. And doesn't return.) Again: small town. But I've eaten some pretty solid sushi in smaller towns and had much, much better experiences than this. Flavors, lack of presentation, untrained staff. The food and service were excellent! They have the best udon soup I have ever had! The tempura is delicious. They so have a few authentic Korean menu items. My Korean mother ordered the Bibimbap, cautiously optimistic that it would be similar to what she is used to. She was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. And it was really good. We had some Bibimbap (about $10) and some of the Tempura Udon (noodle soup). The meals came out quick, but the meal was a DISAPPOINTMENT. The vegetables (carrots, cucumbers, soy beans) and rice were NOT FRESH. The meat was mediocre and the metal bowl quickly made the dish COLD. This place is the place to go to get great Japanese cuisine in Rolla. First of all I will say the interior is very well designed compared to most other places in the area. The sushi bar and decorative items simply compliment the style and feel of the whole restaurant and emotions of the food. I ordered the Salmon Teriyaki Dinner for $14, and it was worth it. For the price I got a hot plate of salmon and greens, a bowl of rice, miso soup and a salad. The teriyaki sauce was perfect, it was great tasting and it had a wonderful texture that complimented the salmon. The fish was also cooked just right for my taste and the added lemon slice which I love on my fish was added without request. The miso soup tasted just like one I had from my favourite Japanese restaurant back home, with plentiful seaweed and tofu and a temperature that was just right for eating. The salad was also great, it had a mysterious reddish sauce on it which I was reluctant to try at first but it had this amazing lemony accent to it which just made the whole salad crisp and fresh in taste and it just flowed so well with the whole meal. I also ordered 6 California rolls, which just like the rest of the meal were simply amazing. They had an amazing fresh taste and the texture of the roll was perfect in every aspect. The service was very kind, always ready to serve and above all fast. The waiting time was not noticeable at all for our meals and drinks. --- I can highly suggest this restaurant to anyone who is looking for a wonderful night out with a Japanese culinary experience. Based on the yelp reviews we decided to try it out. How this place has 4 1/2 stars is beyond me. Nothing had flavor. Spicy tuna was not spicy or even good. The Korean speciality dish was flavorless. The beef in the bento box was rubbery and mushy. The ika salad had more cucumbers than squid. The service was slow. It was not good and I will not go back. Don't let these reviews fool you. This place has the best Asian food in Rolla and some of the best Asian food I have ever had. My boyfriend used to live in Rolla and it was one of our favorite places to visit! The spicy chicken bulgogi (idk if that is how to spell it) is absolutely amazing. We always got the dinner bento box and you get a lot of food for the price! I love this place! It's got fairly reasonable prices and The food is always good. I eat here probably once a week and every time I go I always ask for no meat and no carrots in what I'm getting and they always make sure it's correct and they always have it ready in a timely manner. Never takes more than 15 minutes to get food whether I'm dining in or taking out. They have really good appetizers as well, their gyoza, miso soup, and crab Rangoon are among my favorite. Every server that I've had there has always been super friendly and nice and knows just wanted to check in on you. They've got good seating for medium-size parties; 5 to 7 people can easily sit at one of their bigger tables. They also have lunch specials and dinner specials as well as a large variety of rolls to choose from. Bibimbap is By far my favorite thing to get there. I simply love this place. No matter what time of day it is, or the amount people, the staff is always pleasant and assisting some that are new to the restaurant. My rolls are always fresh, and they don't use additives to stretch the food, like other sushi places do. And did I mention this is not a chain restaurant!!!! Even the owners greet you and say goodbye if they aren't too busy. And did I mention that the owners are the ones preparing my delicious food. Everyone that enjoys sushi, I highly recommend this place. My nickname for it is Mr. Motto. The only complaint I have is there isn't a wide selection of sake. Mottomo is pretty pricey for their offerings, but it's Missouri, so their fare is good for where we are. However, the price and size of offerings are a bit off putting. And don't use your debit card to pay, unless you want a week of triple or even quadruple charges while they sort it all out. read more

Recently moved to Rolla and was feeling some sushi. I arrived 15 minutes before closing time, but did not feel rushed at all. I ordered the "Wasabi 5," which is an unagi bento box. The meal came with miso soup and a salad which were both pretty good, although admittedly it is difficult to mess up miso soup. The salad had a light, sweet ginger dressing on it which led me to actually eat it (I usually skip salads). The tempura was great - crispy outside and well cooked inside. The California rolls were extra thick with fresh avocado. The unagi was delicious and the portion was well balanced with the rice. This wasn't the best I've ever had, but it was certainly pretty good for the price and definitely good for the location, especially considering unagi is my favorite. Note: I'm from Southern California, where sushi is cheap and plentiful. read more
