Let me start by saying we had high expectations from the 4 and 5 star reviews. I will also profess this by saying there was literally 1 waitress and 1 in training for a full 20-30ish top dining room. We ordered the squid salad for an app, 3 rolls, bibimbop (for my wife and I); and 2 bento boxes (for my 2 daughters). First, literally everything came out at once except the bibimbop, which also included 4 complimentary miso soups. Soup was good. The 3 rolls had no flavor with one being deep fried. Fish was firm, but bland. Rolls were cut unequally. The beef bento tasted like rehydrated and cooked beef jerky. Chicken teriyaki bento was fine. The bibimbop was utterly disappointing based on the reviews. A lot of rice and carrot. Very very little beef ( several small shreds), egg was over cooked and dry not over easy and runny, and not a lot of the chili paste. Very bland. I have had better sushi in O'fallon, IL at Sakè. That is literally the best sushi I have eaten and that's from eating in Cali (L.A., Orange Co., and San Diego, Hawaii, and countless other good sushi places). After trying to finish our meal, we were waiting for 15-20 minutes for our bill. The table next to us had been seated about 15 minutes and had yet to have their drink order taken. Had to go to front to pay. Waited another 5 minutes to be acknowledged. Not impressed. read more

Surprising that a town like Rolla has 2 sushi places, and this is definitely the best of the two. Owned by a nice Korean family, there are even a few Korean choices on the menu. You can see their kids playing on their computers and doing homework when you visit sometime. My wife and I go there every few weeks, and when we walked out after a pre-Christmas dinner the other day, the patriarch of the restaurant came out and gave us a box of beautiful Korean pears to thank us for our business. Fresh ingredients, lightning-fast service, and attentive waitstaff. Get the "Wasabi 1" Bento....a ton of food at a great price. I think the name has been changed recently, but it is still the same place with the same management. read more

My favorite place in town! The owners are beyond accommodating and keep the place clean. Great service!! This is one of 2 sushi restaurants in town and without a doubt is the best one. Great menu selections, good portion sizes, and great prices! Good for a special night out or just a night out with the family. My 5-year-old loves it! I thought that this place was great - not only was the sushi well-prepared and fresh tasting, the staff was friendly and the atmosphere is nice. PLUS, you can get Japanese AND Korean food at the same time! No longer will you have to pick sides on Team Dragon Roll or Team Bi Bim Bap - you can have both!!! Speaking of bim bi bap, they DO have the stone pot (dol sot) so you can get your crispy rice. I was kind of disappointed it didn't come with *any* banchan (like kim chi cabbage, potatoes, greens in little bowls) but I guess that's because it's not entirely Korean. The sushi was good and the wakame salad (my favorite) really hit the spot. Looking forward to eating here again. read more

Looked on Yelp for a really good Sushi restaurant & found this gem! The tempura red snapper was delicious!!! The sauce was a little sour according to my sons, but I liked it. I had the red dragon sushi. Fresh & good. Hubby had pork tonkatsu similar breading to snapper. He liked it. Chix teriyaki was good too. read more

Everyone in town fawns over Kyoto, but Mottomo is better. Source: I studied abroad in Japan four months. For starters, the service is about 10x faster and in my experience, a bit friendlier. Probably bc they're not as busy, but they should be. I think prices are a bit better. Salad and soup tastes a lot like it does in Japan (they eat simple and light over there, you know). The entrees are Americanized but so is every other sushi place in the US and I prefer the Americanized entree style anyway. Good portions. My recommended dish is the chunky monkey sushi. Fried banana sushi. It's better than it sounds. read more

This is the absolute worst Japanese food and sushi we have ever had. So disappointing. The display of dead, dirty plants and dusty stuffed animals at the entrance should have tipped us off. read more

I got the beef bulgogi bento box lunch. The gyoza were freezer burnt and had loose pellets of meat inside; I tried one but left the other. The ginger dressing had somewhat of a ketchup-y taste and the lettuce was clearly from a bag of less-than-fresh iceburg mix. So, as we were on our way home from Fayette, I found this restaurant looking on Yelp. I saw the good reviews, so I thought it would be a good idea to try it. Boy was I right. Amazing service, good food, and really great sushi. The restaurant is cute, and very homey. We will definitely be coming back, and when you are in the area, you should most definitely go and try their food. You will not regret it. read more

We decided to give them a try tonight for date night and we were pleased with the place. Although I will warn the cleanliness left a lot to be desired, the paper in the divider walls actually had food stains and writing on it. One of the sushi menus had also been previously written on so double ick there. BUT, the food was yummy. Our sushi was great and the miso soup was also tasty. We had some bulgogi to split between us and it was yummy too. Our server was spot on, very friendly and fast. Price wasn't bad and it was a pretty casual atmosphere so I would say we will be back for sure. It's not big town sushi, but after all we are in Rolla, MO. Give them a try! read more

I had the Rainbow Roll and the Godzilla Roll. Both were perfectly balanced in taste and texture. The portion size was amazing for the price. Service was very good. I spoke with the owner/chef and he was welcoming and polite. I have found a new favorite restaurant. read more

I read a few of the reviews on Yelp and was optimistic despite the decor walking in. I sat down at the sushi bar to have one of the owners behind me loudly watching YouTube videos while I waited for the chef to appear. It was so loud that I asked to move as I had been driving all day and just wanted to relax. I ordered a mix of nigiri and special rolls which came with a bowl of miso. The miso had very little ingredients and was super salty. The special roll was below average and the salmon nigiri was inedible due to it being watery and clearly dated. I don't recommend this place but I suppose I shouldn't be surprised judging by the location. read more

Me and my wife stopped by on a Sunday afternoon. You'd expect maybe a B squad type mode on a Sunday like I've witnessed in other establishments. This couldn't be further from the truth. Looks kind of unappealing from the outside but it's definitely the best place in town. I was in Seattle for the summer and tried numerous sushi joints. This one was better than all of them. The best rolls I've tried was the volcano, sexy man and sexy woman. Delicious! Plus the owner is very nice and works his ass off. He even gave us a giant case of apples during the holidays! Offers the best and most fresh Japanese in Rolla. We live here and have frequented all of the local Japanese restaurants and Mottomo is by far the freshest. The service is also great, which I can't say for Kyoto or Koi. read more

the name was changed to Motomo several years ago...the same Motomo listed here on Yelp. Of several sushi places in Rolla, this is the best value. Food is first rate and prices not quite so high as elsewhere. Nice atmosphere and service. read more
