I always enjoy this restaurant. Can be hard to get reservations but if you show up early you can put your name in and come back in an hour or 2. Otherwise getting a reservation needs to be done at least 2 weeks before your visit. Everything is great. I especially recommend the burgers. The best in town although Nick's is a close second. If I could, I would give this restaurant zero stars. They kept us waiting for about two hours, then decided to alter our reservation--moving us to a table for five (we had a five-year-old child with us who was getting very hungry)--and made us wait even longer. I don't know why they did this, but the truth is that this restaurant is completely ill-equipped to accommodate guests with children, and its attitude toward its patrons borders on discriminatory. They were very rude. And I am so sorry that I chose this restaurant for celebration. Will not recommend if you want to be appropriately served. Food was delicious but management the worst one. Went here for a birthday--did not disappoint! The food was delicious from wagyu to sushi. The waiters/waitress were very reliable and friendly! As soon as you enter, you are greeted by a koi fish pond that stretches from inside to out! The inside was nice and cozy with dimmed lights making a romantic environment. This was my second time at this location. My son seem to enjoy Houston's so much that he wanted to go back for his birthday. He loves the sushi, especially the kyuri Maki Roll (caviar on top). My daughter had the French Dip Au Jus sandwich (didn't get a photo). I had the house-made veggie patty and fries. I wish they had more vegan options. The service was outstanding. The server provided great recommendations and provided excellent descriptions on suggested dishes. Everyone, including the hostess station and bartenders made the experience even better. I love this place. The food and ambiance are great. However, I only go when a reservation is available because this place gets so busy. I personally think they can be a bit snobby (not the servers, just the restaurant rules). No take out and no reservations for parties larger than 5 because they want to have an "intimate experience" is pretty annoying. Every once in a while this restaurant decides upon unique decision regarding food and drinks. They've changed their "Asian-Style noodle salad" several times. Enough to make me never order it again. But this is the first time I've been denied a drink. I've ordered a "bourbon smash" at this restaurant before. This evening I was denied the drink. I ordered this drink at a table. Explanation was simply, we don't have the ingredients/capability to make this drink. I was shocked as I saw a drink leave the bar with citrus and another one leave the bar with mint. After I asked another bartender about this situation, she said they were able to make it. After another conversation with our server, she said they were going to make an exception to make this drink. This drink has three ingredients. Not sure why they made it an issue. I'll definitely reconsider making plans to revisit this restaurant. What a shame?! I'm a local and a regular. read more

One of the worst restaurants that I ever been. Me and my family wanted to come to Houston's to enjoy lunch and we been coming here for almost 20 years. When we entered the restaurant, the server told us that we can't reserve a reservation because apparently my dad is wearing shorts and sandals. Mind you we didn't have any problems like that when we always come here. And then when we left, the other people were already waiting for the table and they were also wearing shorts and sandals. One of my favorite restaurants as I've been going here my whole life. Never had a problem with dress code. Had a reservation with my family and right before we sat a hostess approached us and said we weren't up to "dress code standards" and had to change our clothes in order to dine there. Super awkward and unnecessary confrontation. Needless to say, we just walked out. I understand they have the right to refuse service, have a dress code, etc. but it was handled very poorly. Also, at least be consistent with it. I saw a couple walk in after us wearing shorts and hoodies. Did they have to change too? New staff is definitely not it. Do better. read more

I've been coming to this establishment for years and used to absolutely love it - great food, solid drinks, and friendly staff that made you feel welcome. Unfortunately, things have gone downhill fast since the change in seems to be management. First off, the service has become incredibly inconsistent with rules/policies, now for the strangest part - the new bar policy about cell phone usage. Apparently, you're no longer allowed to have your phone out at the bar? I was casually texting and on a facetime call while waiting for a friend, and the bartender actually asked me to put my phone away. It wasn't even busy, and I wasn't bothering anyone even my peers next to me had no issue and was shocked by the decision in the card handed to me by the bartender. When I asked why, I got a vague response about "creating a social environment." Sorry, but treating paying customers like grade schooler doesn't exactly scream "welcoming atmosphere." It's really disappointing to see a favorite spot change so drastically for the worse. I hope the owners listen to the feedback and bring back some of what made this place special. Review of the day. My wife and I have been coming here for years and we love it. My business partner and I often hold lunch meetings here. It's no surprise that this restaurant is always busy. Great food great service. The consistency is impeccable. But today I couldn't help but notice there's a manager. I think she's Chinese AMERICAN. There's always a little bit of coldness. As I approach the hostess desk and I quote. "How can I help", there was no welcome. There was no good afternoon. How can I help you? I used to frequently dine at Houston's during special occasions but it's been years since I came back. Now that we moved closer to the sea it's more convenient for us. I recommend making a reservation, we've attempted to walk in expecting a short wait time but that's never the case. There is plenty of parking on their lot, or street parking. We've tried many items on the menu and a few of our favorites are: - spinach and artichoke dip: delicious! One of our favs, the dip has chunks of artichokes and also comes with a side of salsa and sour cream - emerald kale salad: my ultimate favorite kale salad, fresh, crunchy, perfect amount of dressing. I'm salivating just writing about it. I crave this so often!! I wish I could order it togo so I could eat it more often. Unfortunately, the restaurant does not do togo orders :( - crispy chicken sandwich: great option to share, chicken is juicy and crispy and the cole slaw pairs well with it - bbq pork ribs: my husband likes this, comes with a large portion Their food is always consistent, the quality has been the same every time I dined here. Attractive architecture inside and out. Masterful table lighting gives each individual table a level of privacy. Service is impeccable, smiling faces and Friendly greetings seem genuine. They don't tend to accommodate large parties even with a reservation. Your best bet is to stick to 2-4 people max. The service here is always amazing. They're very attentive, quick, and will refill both water and chips for your dip as soon as you need it. The crispy chicken sandwich is chopped into four large pieces and great for sharing as well. It's probably the best chicken sandwich I've ever had and every time I come here we get this as a shareable. The burger is a great choice as well. If I'm not getting their amazingly seasoned, crispy but juicy, medium rare steak then this is my next best pick. If you're looking for an app, you can't go wrong with the classic spinach and artichoke dip. They serve it up with a side of sour cream and pico de gallo. Tip: add salt to the sour cream. Overall, pricing really isn't that bad considering the quality of the food, business casual ambiance, and the portions. read more

Great place for celebrations or a casual date night. I always opt for the spinach and artichoke dip, USDA prime filet, and the chicken sandwich to share. An absolute must to get. They refill your chips but don't take advantage because it will fill you up. Save space for the main entree. To end a perfect meal, the nut brownie and apple cobbler both warmed and topped with ice cream. Staff are friendly and constantly refill your water and take any plates out of the way. They came over to dispel my fears about bringing my incredibly well behaved 4 year old and told him to sit down at the same time- an incredibly well behaved child who thought we were leaving. I had a very disappointing experience at Houston's in Pasadena. The general manager, Sean Martin, was extremely rude and unwelcoming toward families with children. Our child was simply laughing, and instead of handling the situation respectfully, he told us to "keep your child's voice down" and made it clear we were no longer welcome. No family should be treated this way at a restaurant, especially one that claims to offer high-quality hospitality. Hillstone corporate should really take a closer look at how this location is being managed. Sean Martin should not be in a hospitality role if this is how he treats guests. read more

I really loved Houston's. Great place for a celebration dinner or dinner date. It's like an upscale grill house with lots of crave-able options. They're super famous for their grilled artichokes which come with an aioli dipping sauce. They were so good, made to order and the artichokes themselves were tender and flavorful. The sauce went well with them (and everything else too!) We got their also famous beef dip sandwich which came with the au jus dipping sauce which did not disappoint. They use a fluffy bread on the sandwich to soak up all that extra sauce. For dessert we tried this apple crumble which was topped with vanilla ice cream and lotsa nuts (walnuts I believe) The service is excellent which is really refreshing! I can see why this place is always so busy. I ordered the trout, and we shared a chilled jalapeño appetizer. The appetizer was a bit small for the price and wasn't too memorable overall. However, the fish was very tasty! It was well cooked and seasoned. The tartar sauce was especially delicious - creamy, silky, and flavorful. I tried some of the pork chop, which was also delicious! The pork was silky and well seasoned. We also ordered the ice cream sundae and key lime pie for dessert. The sundae was particularly delicious! The key lime pie was ok; I've definitely had better. BUT...I am incredibly disappointed by this sudden enforcement of "no parties over four," which is what we were told when we called about a birthday lunch this weekend. I understand not accommodating a reservation above a certain number of people (although it's still nonsensical), but we were told even if we just arrive with a party over 4 we won't be accommodated. This is a RIDICULOUS policy. I love a small, intimate dining experience as much as the next person. But we have a small party of 3 couples for my FIL's bday and we are all frequently returning customers. Very disappointing. read more

I dine at this Houston's quite frequently and have had a few unusual incidents over the years, but none have ever left me feeling the way I did today. Once, I came with a friend for her birthday and the man seated in the booth behind us threw a drink at the woman he was dining with. The drink splashed onto my friend as well. We didn't make a fuss, and the next day the restaurant called to apologize and offered a gift card. We returned later and had a pleasant experience. Another time, on New Year's Eve, while waiting for our table, we watched a drunk guest refuse to leave and eventually get dragged out by Pasadena Police. Once he was removed, we enjoyed our evening with no issues. Today, after church, my husband, our 19-month-old son, and I decided to dine here again. We were told the wait would be 45 minutes -- no problem, as we've dined here multiple times with our baby and always had a great experience. I asked about high chairs and was reminded they didn't have any, which was fine since we always keep one in the car. Once seated, we set up our portable high chair in the booth and ordered food for all of us. Our son ate quietly and happily, and his food arrived quickly. Our entrées were delayed because the items weren't available until about 15 minutes after we ordered, but that still wasn't an issue. What shocked us was being interrupted mid-conversation by a staff member who walked up without announcing himself. Smiling, he said, "Hi. I'm just gonna ask you to keep the baby down. Just do all you can do to keep the baby quiet. If there's anything we can do, please let us know." I honestly thought we were being pranked. My son had been completely quiet and content the entire time. I asked if we were being pranked, and he said no. I told him that if the restaurant didn't want children present, that should be stated upfront -- but that wasn't the case. I also told him I'd lost my appetite because of how inappropriate and unnecessary the request was. He walked away looking unsure and unprepared for the situation. My husband went to find someone more capable of handling customer concerns. Meanwhile, the table beside us expressed how shocked they were and confirmed our baby had been silent. They were so disturbed by what they witnessed that they left. I also learned that no one in our section had complained, which made it even more confusing why we were singled out. My husband eventually spoke with the general manager, Sean, but the conversation took so long that I grew more uncomfortable. When my husband returned to the table, our food had arrived, but I had asked them to hold it because I wasn't sure how things would unfold. Sean then approached our table and, without introducing himself to me, asked, "Are you all going to eat?" Only after I asked who he was did he tell me he was the general manager. I explained that I had lost my appetite and that his question felt dismissive given the seriousness of what happened. My husband asked for a moment, and Sean walked away. Throughout all of this, my baby remained quiet, happy, and eating his food. During this time, staff began approaching every table with children, making parents visibly uncomfortable. Our server even said, "Oh yeah, they're making their rounds." Ironically, no child in the room was being loud. One family told us they had been kicked out. Another family with a toddler who was simply standing in the booth was told to make her sit; they left soon after. We chose not to eat, but we allowed our son to finish his meal since he was truly the calmest, most well-behaved person at our table. Toward the end, Sean returned and apologized, saying they would cover our son's grilled cheese and fries. Given what happened, that was the absolute least they could do. My concern now is not just our treatment but the treatment of other families who were also targeted despite their children being quiet. We have dined here many times -- alone, with friends, and with family -- and have never experienced anything like today. The request to "keep the baby quiet" when he was already quiet was inappropriate, unnecessary, and deeply disappointing. After today's experience, I will not be dining at this Houston's again. read more
