My wife and I had an unusual experience at Houstons in Hackensack, NJ today. By way of background, we have patronized this restaurant for many years, and generally we've enjoyed the experience. As we were commencing our meal, a man identifying himself as the manager came to our table and demanded that I should remove my hat. I explained that I kept it on for medical reasons, but he continued to be very insistent. Regrettably, the conversation went downhill from there. Me: I think you're having delusions of grandeur for what is essentially a jumped-up burger joint. Manager: If you feel that way, maybe you're in the wrong restaurant? Me: If you feel that way, maybe you're in the wrong job? Or is it customary for you to insult your customers? This exchange resulted in a very unpleasant atmosphere, and I did not leave my customary 20% tip, As we were leaving, he pursued us to the door, apparently very angry. I dined at the Riverside Square location two days ago. I dine there when I am in the area and have done so for the past two years. The food and service was excellent. I asked for extra salsa. When I got my bill I was surprised that it included a charge of $3.00 for a ramequin size portion of salsa for the spinach dip I ordered. When I asked for the manager, he stated that has been the policy for over a year, which I informed him that has never happened when I dined there or in other locations during the past year. It wasn't the extra charge that annoyed me, but the cheap nickel and diming of the customer from a somewhat pricey restaurant that offended me. Given the inflation that people are dealing with, this was a cheap money grab that the restaurant has initiated, like a small tax that is aimed at gouging from the public. read more

The food at Houston's is good. The staff is well dressed, neat, and professional looking. The restaurant has a nice dim atmosphere although a bit crowded. The cocktails are more like "mocktails". My drink is vodka on the racks with a literal drop of cranberry juice. When I make that drink at home with 1 oz of vodka, the vodka is noticeable with the familiar burn of an alcohol drink. At Houston's you can drink dozens and not be impaired because the drinks appear to have either no liquor at all, a watered down well vodka, or something other than vodka. For 15-20 bucks a drink, that is not only dishonest but also unlawful. I will look into what government agency monitors liquor sales at restaurants and ask them to look into it. After I received my second poorly made under poured drink I returned it and asked for it to be removed from my bill. So if good food is what you seek, Houston's might be ok. If you want a cocktail with your meal, I'd suggest elsewhere. read more

Food was just OK, but the female hostesses at this location are horrendous. Huge egos (not really sure why), and they don't seat you on time for your reservation despite the table being available, clean, and very ready to go. Seem like they were gossiping and were too busy doing so to greet anyone, seat them, or even be kind. A lot of Houston's diners are of an odd variety, smelling heavily (and disgusting, particularly in a food establishment) of marijuana. I have seen higher quality restaurants state they reserve the right to turn away customers who smell foul. However, with the attitudes of the staff at Houston's, the fellow diners' stench honestly fits it with Houston's lesser atmosphere, which (similar to these diners) appears to be masquerading as something higher in status than it actually is. To recap, not sure what job or where Houston's greeters believe they're working, but it's unpleasant for all, and coupled with the mediocre food and unsavory (and bad smelling) patrons, it's a no for us, and we will be recommending people against. read more

The rule is great except they don't enforce it. You can't pick and chose what to enforce. Super chic restaurant but was not impressed. For starters, we had the spinach dip which was delicious but there was barely enough chips for the 3 of us. I had the BBQ ribs which were pretty good but could've done without the shoestring fries (not a fan), the dessert was rich and delicious and I wish I could remember what it was called; it had a ton of nuts and fudge my son enjoyed it. No kids menu here, so my son had a regular cheeseburger-no problem here though--he's got a great appetite! Though, I wonder about other kids who like the typical kid's menu... We left expecting more, our cousin who brought us here was so excited to take us and quickly disappointed to see they've changed their menu over the couple years (probably due to the pandemic) and service was lacking. Disgrace of a restaurant!! If you have children avoid at all costs!!! Staff and manager extremely rude and unaccommodating. We had a reservation with our 2 year old son. They told me right away they do not have a children's menu. So I assumed they had Mac and cheese on the menu. Also not an option. The PRIME FRENCH DIP AU JUS Sandwich from @houstonsrestaurants is my favorite sandwich of 2023 and of all time. It comes with thinly sliced roasted prime rib, house-made toasted French roll. This was my first time dining here and I'll definitely be back! Try to call ahead or make reservations because this place is always packed. We ended up sitting at the bar to get served quicker. I ordered the cheeseburger and my sister in law ordered the chicken sandwich. Both were very delicious. I didn't realize the burger came with mayo on the bun and the server saw me trying to scrape it off and immediately was kind enough to go and grab me a new bun. Such amazing and friendly staff! April was our server and as always, without one exception to the rule, perfect service. Those who complain about steaks not being cooked to their desired temperature, guessing medium well people, stop going to Houston's and stop eating steaks in general. If you're a parent -- especially a new one -- steer far away from Houston's. I've been to this establishments a few times, but my recent experience was so humiliating and hostile that I will never return. I came in on Friday June 27th to have lunch with my family, including my 11-month-old daughter, who let out a brief whine (as babies sometimes do). At first, a staff member named Katherine seemed friendly and even offered some avocado for my daughter -- thoughtful, right? But almost immediately after, the mood shifted completely. The same woman returned to essentially tell me my child was "disruptive" and made it clear we were no longer welcome, by telling me I had to remove my child from the premises. I was shocked. She clearly had an ulterior motive. When I asked to speak to another manager, a man named Collin came over and only made things worse with condescending, backhanded remarks. No empathy, no solutions -- just cold, dismissive treatment. Apparently, simply having a baby with you is enough to get pushed out the door here. I left feeling humiliated, singled out, and completely disrespected. This restaurant does not market itself as an adults-only space. There was loud music, an open loud kitchen, and many full tables mingling. I do not see how my daughter could have been so disruptive to others. For a restaurant that prides itself on service and atmosphere, this was a total failure on both counts. If you've got kids -- or even just a shred of human empathy -- do yourself a favor and skip this place. There are plenty of great restaurants in town that won't treat you like having children is such an inconvenience. I emailed a manager I spoke over the phone with, and Todd Martin, the exec. general manager, on the day of the incident and have not received a response. They clearly are not concerned with the nearly traumatic experience they've given us as paying customers. And yes, they made us pay. I went to Houston's for the first time last night with two friends for dinner. I had heard that it was excellent but hard to get in. I was able to book a 6:30 PM dinner reservation for a Wednesday night. The waitress was fantastic and knowledgeable about the menu. In addition to the simplistic menu offered, there were 3 specials. I felt that the menu had some diversity but could have used a few more entrees listed. The food came and they honored any requests we had regarding seasonings and such. Our table ordered the trout and the chicken sandwich. We split the spinach with artichoke dip to start and the apple crumble dessert. All were delicious. The reason this review gets 3 stars is because of the vibe. After 2 hours at the table (on a Wednesday night, mind you), a restaurant employee (manager?) came over to tell us we had to leave because the table was reserved for the next party. There were multiple open tables but the restaurant was still busy in general with customers finishing meals. The restaurant closes at 9 on weekdays. The tone was a bit condescending- in general and our whole table was taken aback by the request. Also when we paid our bill, they said they only split the check in 2- and couldn't divide it in 3 even if one of us paid cash. I found that they were a bit unaccommodating with this in addition to the staff member who visited the table. Definitely a stuffy vibe for an upscale "Charlie Browns Steakhouse" atmosphere . For the price- ir's not worth the snobby vibe and somewhat limited menu. It's not worth the effort of parking/ trying to get a reservation to return. I don't think I'll be back. read more

TLDR: A sister restaurant of Hillstone. Good if you're looking for safe new American. Definitely reserve, long lines and wait times. Spinach/artichoke dip, french dip and The Hawaiian are what I'd recommend. You do need to dress up a bit more here. No athletic wear. The food is decent, service was not so great last time we went but it is a more upscale new American chain restaurant. I can't quite figure out why but this place is always booked out every weekend. It's kind of bizarre. The spinach/artichoke dip is the same one from Hillstone, so it is creamy, delicious and oh so good. Same with the French Dip, simple but tasty. Thinly-sliced beef, a creamy horseradish on the side and plenty of jus to dip it in. I did try the steak special last time, not good - very bland. I specifically called them asking for a reservation around 7:30 on a thursday and there were none (understandable) So I asked if we can come and put our name down he said yes and that it would be around 1-1.5 hour wait around then, I ended up showing up at 6:15 and asked to put my name down and wait (I was willing to wait even 2 hours ) for a party of 4 and the hostess told me they are not taking names anymore for the night. I drove 40 minutes to come only because I was told over the phone that I can do so. And for a place that is normally very serious about high customer satisfaction, you should make sure the hostess with the black hair doesn't have an attitude and actually listens when we speak. There's a hint of peanuts in the salad that gives it a nice crunch! But that fresh fish - wow ! Today it was trout. Delicious and you should eat the skin! You can taste the charbroil.
