This is one of the five locations Roots has. Located in trendy Ridgewood, street parking can be sparse especially on weekends. Typical NY\NJ area high end steakhouse. Decor is plenty of wood panel walls, tile, marble, like the library of an old private club. Service is typical too for a place like this. Plenty of it and well trained. I've dined at a lot of these types of steakhouses and they are all "generally" the same. Expensive slabs of meat. Everything ala carte. Great place for a drink though as the bartenders are good with great selections of spirits, wines, and beers. But all at a high end prices. Apps: --Crispy Wagyu Dumplings; served with 2 sauces: sambal & mustard Very flavorful and different. Good choice! --Colossal Lump Crab Cake with lemon & tartar sauce; I've had better, I've had worse. -- Yellowfin Tuna Tartare with crushed avocado, crispy wontons, wasabi cream, ponzu, sesame seeds; Excellent, fresh. Great ( lighter) choice if you're have going to have slabs of beef. Entrees: --The Beef Wellington ( always a limited supply) with filet mignon, mushroom, asparagus, Hollandaise sauce was very good! --a 16 oz NY Strip was a good size but a bit boring --Roots Tailors Plate: A surf & turf of petite cut filet mignon (6 oz) & two jumbo shrimp with a scampi butter sauce was good, but you'll need appts and sides if you are hungry; Looks like a kid's portion on a large dish ( see pic) Sides: -regular mac & cheese----skip it, not worth the price. -Potatoes Au Gratin was a good version; nothing spectacular. -Creamed Corn with sweet corn puree, roasted corn, pearl onions was actually very good and I highly recommend. Desserts: - the Layered Carrot Cake with sweet cream cheese frosting (and NO raisins) was very good. --there was a Special dessert of a small yellow cake topped with vanilla ice cream and blueberries with syrup ( see pic) that was excellent; All in all a great meal ( and service) but I usually pick steakhouses once or twice a year as they all share about 80% of the same menu. Personally I rather cook a great cut of beef at home. But Its a place to splurge, blow out that AMEX, special occasions, look important and sometimes you want that. This delivers.

I have several allergies and they were able to accommodate me perfectly! I had the maple bacon for appetizer which was absolutely delicious. Then my cowboy steak was beautifully cooked and fries were also delicious. Waiters were super nice and attentive would definetly recommend!

We visited Roots Steakhouse for my father's holiday party/dinner, which had a pre-fixe menu. The space had a formal vibe, with dim lighting and classic decor. Our event was in the back room, where tables were set up along with a seating chart. Service was attentive and professional, but I felt like the food just didn't live up to the "fanciness" of the venue. For my appetizer, I chose the Lobster Bisque, which was pretty good. I liked the creaminess and flavor, but didn't love that it only had a single chunk of lobster. For my entree, I figured the Filet Mignon would be my safest bet at a steakhouse. It wasn't bad but lacked flavor, as it was only seasoned with salt and pepper. My "medium rare" and my partner's "medium" were also cooked exactly the same, which I found odd. My mother's Chicken Parmesan, however, was much better! For dessert, everyone was given the Roots Warm Butter Cake. This one also wasn't up my alley - kind of plain and forgettable. Overall, I can't complain too much about a free dinner, but would not return on my own dime.

I made a reservation for Sunday lunch. Upon arrival, we were promptly taken to our table. The restaurant had such beautiful interior, integrated with luxurious railway car vibes, and huge bar area in front. All the furnishings, wall arts and decors were so nicely put together. The menu had lots of good appetizers, a raw bar section, salads, steaks, seafood and few entrees. Some of their entrees had unique options of multiple small items together, like Ultimate Roots Trio and the Roots Express lunch. I went with the first one, that came with a slider, small lobster roll and lobster bisque. The slider wasn't too good, had plain bread, patty and some crispy onion. I'd have liked to some sort of sauce in it. But the roll and soup were really good. I also got the lobster bites for appetizers. These were to die for. Soooo creamy and buttery. They put these in a dish with holes. It was such a fantastic dish. The Mac & cheese was also a good dish. We also got a complimentary bread with butter. It was huge and top quality. The service was top notch. Our server was a pro, interacted with us on many different things other than just taking and serving orders. The manager also stopped by our table multiple times, had some wonderful conversations with him. Overall we have a wonderful family lunch here. I am surprised it took me such a long time to discover this amazing steak house. Will be back for sure.

Nice steakhouse at downtown ridgewood. Grand design in the dining hall. It definitely gives a vibe for "formal dining". Service is wonderful. Our server was tentative and friendly. Great interaction with us and our kid. We met the manager as well. Very nice guy. Professional. Food is great. I like the onion soup. They absolutely put work into the soup. Sweetness from the onion and savory from cheese complimented each other well. Crab cake sandwich and lobster are both good. Overall a great spot for date or family gatherings.

Roots has always been one of my favorite steakhouses in Ridgewood, whether it's for an event or just a dinner out. This is one of my more recent trips and second time being disappointed. We were able to walk right in on a Friday night without a reservation which was a huge plus. Service was just okay. Once our orders were placed it seemed as if our server was gone for extensive periods of time. We placed our drinks and appetizers first. The drinks came out rather fast as only an IPA and spicy guava margarita was ordered. The Maine lobster bites were good in flavor however it was missing either a splash of lemon or salt for some flavor as the sauce was pretty bland. Next we had the crispy shrimp scampi with their jumbo shrimp. The batter was undercooked and still doughy and definitely needed to be fried longer. The sauce however was perfect and we ended up using it on the lobster bites for better flavor. The spicy guava margarita was okay and nothing special for a featured cocktail. I ordered a watermelon Aperol spritz next and wow amazing. The watermelon flavor was strong but not overpowering and did not have that gross artificial flavor I was expecting. For dinner we ordered the prime NY strip and a filet mignon. The filet mignon was delicious, well seasoned, and cooked to the perfect medium rare. My filet mignon was okay cooked a bit more then I liked but our server was MIA for about 20-30 minutes after receiving our meals and I was starving so I suffered thru an overcooked dry steak. The potatoes au gratin were lacking flavor and seasoning which seems to be an ongoing trend for their sides. The popovers that came out at the beginning of the meal were good however the butter was rock hard and difficult to spread easily without making a giant mess. There are subtle details from my many years of coming here of their traditions that are fading away. They don't give you their history at the beginning anymore and when you get up from your table they always used to fold the napkin and place it back on your chair. Also the servers most of the time now are not as presentable in appearance and often have food stains on their jackets. This trip reminded me why we stopped coming into roots for dinner.

    Perfect steak

Located in an area with many fine restaurant options, this steakhouse stood tall in service, food quality, and presentation. The French onion soup au gratin was, to the best of my recollection, one of, if not the best I've had. The depth of flavor in the broth, the perfect combination of crunch and soft in the croûton, and the sustained stretch of the cheese made this soup my best friend. I wasn't terribly hungry, especially after the soup, so I enjoyed the lobster Mac and cheese. Like the soup, great flavor and texture, and lots of lobster (but no matter how much lobster, it's never enough ). Not too anything, just a great balance of flavors, textures, and... lobster. I want to call out the wonderful popovers served at every table, and mention the steak as well. While my dining companions enjoyed the steak and side dishes of creamed spinach and mashed potatoes, the reviews were stellar. Cooked to perfection, the steak had a great char on the outside and tender, buttery texture inside. Even I was impressed! With multiple drinks, the bill was about $100/head including tip. Well worth it. Enjoy!

95 percent of the experience is the food but often the remaining 5% is service; and it's the 5% you remember. This was 120%... food and service. Thanks Mr Wolf for making this a 1st visit, the 1st of many. Beef Wellington. Filet and "Cowboy," all good.

Visited on a weekend for date night and we were pleasantly surprised with this restaurant. We had reservations and were seated upon arrival. We were seated directly across from the bar. The server was attentive but not overbearing. They brought out bread and butter for the table which was warm and flaky. It was almost like a croissant- light and perfect as a pre-meal treat. I ordered a Jack & coke and it was well balanced- not too much soda nor too much alcohol. We then ordered the bacon and a Ceasar salad to share as appetizers. Both were good. For my entree I ordered the petite filete and we shared truffle fries and Mac n Cheese. The filete was cooked exactly as ordered (medium). Food was very good. We are very particular about our steak and this was a good steak (not the best we have had, but good). My only critique of the restaurant is the lack of music. They should have low music playing so that we don't over hear everyone's conversations. This stood out to us. Nonetheless, we liked our experience and we plan to try the Morristown location next.

Roots in Ridgewood is on par with any of the great steakhouses in NYC. The decor is both elegant and inviting, creating a warm, sophisticated atmosphere that sets the stage for an unforgettable meal. The vibe is upscale but comfortable, making it perfect for both special occasions and casual dining. The staff truly sets Roots apart. From the moment we walked in, the service was impeccable. The hostesses greeted us with warmth, and our server, Sara, was friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive without being overbearing. Manager Kyle made the rounds, ensuring everything was perfect, and his touch added a personal, welcoming feel. This level of service is something other restaurants should aspire to achieve. Now, let's talk about the food - an absolute highlight. We kicked things off with the Slab Bacon appetizer, which was incredibly tender and packed with flavor. It was the perfect start to the meal. Next, we had the creamy burrata, served with fresh basil, heirloom tomatoes, and a drizzle of balsamic. The combination was just perfect, and the crostini added a delightful crunch. But the real standout appetizer was the Lobster Bites - a must-try. These little bites of lobster were creamy, cheesy, and so decadent. Honestly, they were better than most lobster dishes we had during a recent trip to Maine! If you're a lobster fan, you can't miss these. For the main event, we ordered the Porterhouse for Two, and it was nothing short of spectacular. The steak was perfectly seasoned and truly melt-in-your-mouth tender. It didn't need any sauce, but Roots offers several, and we couldn't resist trying a few. The horseradish sauce was a true standout: balanced, creamy, and not overly sharp, it complemented the steak beautifully. We also enjoyed the au Poivre and Béarnaise sauces, which were both rich and flavorful. There's also a house-made steak sauce that reminded us of the famous Peter Luger's - a great option for those who like a bit of extra flavor. For sides, we went with the classic Mac and Cheese and Brussels sprouts. Both were delicious - the mac and cheese was rich and creamy, while the Brussels sprouts had the perfect char and were seasoned just right. Roots also offers a refreshing alternative to alcohol with their selection of iced teas. We tried the raspberry and green tea mango varieties, both of which were wonderfully refreshing and a great non-alcoholic option. We couldn't leave without trying the Roots Signature Butter Cake, and we're so glad we saved room for it. This warm, buttery dessert is a dream - rich, indulgent, and utterly delicious. It's worth the trip on its own! And yes, we definitely had plenty of leftovers to take home - the portions are generous, but the quality is worth every bite. We absolutely loved our experience at Roots, and we're already looking forward to our next visit!

I've eaten here twice and both times have been great! The steak, service, desserts, everything! On my last visit I had the prime cowboy steak which was cooked to a perfect medium rare and was seasoned perfectly. The shrimp cocktail was great too! The shrimp were huge and cooked perfectly. I also liked the butter cake. It was really good! I'd order everything again. The service was also phenomenal. The food came out in great time and our waiter was so kind, attentive and a good listener. All-in-all, yes, come here. For sure. Especially if you love steak.

    Beef Wellington
    Miguel H.

Roots steakhouse is a pretty solid restaurant. Famous for their Beef Wellington and their outstanding service, this place doesn't disappoint in terms of those two things. The ambience is that of a Pub/High-end eatery and is always bustling with people. So much so that sometimes it can be a little difficult to dine here. It's always extremely loud and even if you have a reservation for 7 PM you typically are going to wait 20 to 40 minutes for your table. And in my opinion, that truly disappoints that discerning diner. Anyway, let's talk about the food. The shrimp cocktail is phenomenal and any of their choice salads aren't going to disappoint. The steak options are always premium choice and cooked to perfection. But for me, my go to choice at this establishment is always going to be the Beef Wellington. I admire this dish for its simplicity, creativity, and its presentation. Oh yeah and also its flavor. The outer pastry is very light and buttery and the beef is always tender and cooked to perfection. What can I say, I just love this dish. So in summary, if I were you, I would definitely visit this establishing during it off peak hours, and I would definitely order any one of their delectable appetizers. And I will also recommend having one of their choice cuts of steak. I hope you enjoy this restaurant and happy yelping!

The hospitality was incredible. We went there for my birthday. All the staff knew it was my birthday and they also knew that I was eight months pregnant and wanted to make sure that I was comfortable. The food was exceptional. The wait staff was so nice and provided recommendations while not pushing any one dish. We got the focaccia, softshell crab, Peking duck and chicken liver for appetizers. The softshell crab was the best I've ever had, and I would come back to this restaurant for this alone. The Peking duck was juicy and tender with the most incredible slaw type salad underneath it. The focaccia with the butter was also phenomenal, the owner actually brought it out to us and we had a nice conversation with him and you can tell he just poured his heart and soul into this restaurant. The focaccia is definitely not an appetizer to be overlooked just because it is bread. While I couldn't have any of the chicken liver mousse, it looked stunning, and my husband said that it was incredible and so light and fluffy, and it was a massive portion. I look forward to when we come back when I'm not pregnant and I can eat it. For dinner I got the Arctic char, and my husband got the pork. The Arctic char was unbelievable. It was piping hot and literally just melted in my mouth with each bite and the side that came with it was a mix of asparagus, mushrooms, farro and I don't know what else, but it was fantastic if I could have that side on its own as well, I would order more. My husband's pork was crispy and delicious with another incredible slaw topping, and it was so massive he has to take home like a third of it for dessert. We had the lemon meringue tart for dessert, which was also incredible and so refreshing for a dessert. All of the food was outrageously fresh and just outstanding. This restaurant is our new favorite place and on the way out we even made a reservation for three weeks from now to come back. This is probably the best restaurant that I've eaten at in Ridgewood hands down and I'm so glad that they are in the area. The restaurant adds a new vibe with food that is so phenomenal to match. Along with them, they have brought bits and pieces of their native country's culture, particularly gastronomically. French-themed restaurants are not new. French cuisine values the use of fresh, high-quality ingredients, such as fruits, vegetables, herbs, and locally sourced products. They are renowned for their culinary techniques, including sautéing, braising, roasting, and poaching. Meals are often enjoyed slowly and in smaller portions. Located in the heart of Ridgewood, this favorite local BYOB establishment has been run by the chef-owner for 25+ years and brings French cuisine to the next level. For some of us, this is a return visit after 2 years. A reservation was easily made for a party of 4 for dinner tonight via OpenTable. Upon arrival at our table, my partner, our friends, and I were greeted by the chef/owner, Michael Latour. Inside, this cozy, inviting, and casual vibe transported us to Paris. Various art pieces and designs were spread throughout two dining rooms. The menu is a culinary journey through flavors and textures. As an appetizer, we opted for the Scallops Rockefeller, Lump Crabmeat Strudel, and Roasted Beet Salad. Our main course featured Apricot-Glazed Duck Breast, Garlic and Mustard-Crusted Lamb Noisette, and Mac and Cheese with Lump Crabmeat Gratinée. Complimentary warm rolls with butter started our meal. Every dish was more impressive than the last. The sauces were perfection. Everything was tastefully delicious, well seasoned, and authentic. The price was comparable to the area. The staff was friendly and attentive; our server was Nancy. Michael, the chef, remains amazing as he goes by every table checking on his clients, old and new, to bring the personal touch. From the ambiance to the cuisine and the service, every aspect was executed with excellence, which we continue to recommend.
