Been here twice and not sure why it gets under 4 stars--this place hasn't had one disappointing plate. Both times my lady and I split 4-5 small plates and this time they had cocktails which is a huge plus. Any of their oysters (grilled or raw) are great and their shrimp tostada special was excellent. Service can be spotty due to the relay between the sister restaurant next door (Stella), but is not too slow to temper the experience. We had great date nights both times and I plan to be back soon. read more

Then spicey mussels and smash burger... all delicious. Then brie melt with mushrooms and truffle (eh) and octopus salad (a smidge fishy) and finally, the rock shrimp came last. Staff: so very accommodating. The owner, Arun met with us and worked with us and our budget. The chef - Chef Louis was always available even though he is running Stella and no 12 and was a delight to work with. The ingredients are high quality and made fresh per order. The beignets to the pasta to the seafood. It was all great and Chef Louis was beyond accommodating. The ambiance: speakeasy traditional. A nice bar to hold two mixologists/bartenders. Dark interior with unique wallpaper and light fixtures. Quirky fun speakeasy style decor. Yes, no liquor License but pretty sure people could get creative and bring their own unique drinks with them. Get over it bc this is a nice little gem in RW. It was a win. Owner Arun and Chef Louis and staff outdid themselves and bent over backwards to accommodate our 55 person party. No stone left unturned. Now...not so much. Food: overpriced, cheap bar food vibes. Used to be the go-to spot for excellent, curated seafood and creative dining. Now it's just lackluster oysters, nasty frozen shrimp (the shrimp was soggy and the cocktail sauce was sugary, ketchup-like crap) and store-bought, frozen bread...I'm talking like ShopRite cheap-o white bread. Other dishonorable mentions go to the unseasoned lamb (in their defense, it was at least cooked correctly), $26 clam chowder fries which were the typical Reasturant Depot quality with cheap bacon on them (were was the clam chowder?) and worst of all that butternut squash toast with barbeque sauce and horrible bread....what happened? Staff: used to be knowledgeable and interesting. Now they could barely list the oysters of the day (not like they were anything special), nor could they even answer basic questions about the food. My girlfriend and I ordered the apps and mains together and everything was brought out in a random order. Oysters first, then shrimp and toast followed shortly by the lamb chops, then the fries. It was honestly lucky they did because only one bite into all the food I called the server and canceled the rest of my order (which was the scallops and hot honey carrots. Stay clear and go somewhere else like we did (we went to Felina down the block). This place used to be amazing and now has been transformed into an overpriced bar food location. Such a shame. UNDER NEW OWNERSHIP I could not be more disappointed. I had to honestly apologize to the friends that we brought to this restaurant. I had been so excited to finally be able to get a reservation, but I should've known this was a disaster as soon as they allowed us to change a table of two, to a table of 4. We used to enjoy getting the oysters here but this only had four choices. Even though we were a table for four they mixed up the oyster on the platter and had no idea what the choices were. The food was ok but not great. Basically the quality I cook at home, I'm ok but no chef. The service was eh and I heard the server say it wasn't a red or white sauce but an "orange" sauce for pasta. We were a table of four, but everything was prepared for three, so we split into smaller portions or someone didn't eat it. The prices on the menu were no where near the level of the food that was prepared and it's definitely not tapas. To top it off I asked for extra bread for the burrata because they didn't give us enough pieces for 4 people. Except it was "in the oven" for 15 minutes and we had to tell him not to bring it. Horrible experience with the service at this restaurant. The manager ruined our date night by not accepting our reservation (done on OpenTable and confirmed). We were 20 minutes late for the reservation as we walking around looking for the door! The concept of this restaurant is a hard to find speakeasy right? We tried calling several times (to 2 different phone numbers listed on different sites) with no answer. After trying to confirm that we did in fact call and not being able to even tell on their end, they offered us (we were with our 4 year old son) seats at the bar instead. There were 2 tables with customers seated at the time as well. This is not a restaurant with a focus on customer service or integrity of business in my opinion. I wouldn't trust the food likewise. With a name like SPEAKEASY No 12 and an Open Table listing that has many pictures of cocktails and alcoholic beverages, it came as a surprise to me and my dining companion that there were no cocktails, no wine and no alcohol available at this pseudo-Speakeasy (the listing also says "You will love the exquisitely decorated raw bar with roughly 50 seats," and I noted the raw bar actually had 5 seats. Don't know if that's a typo or a grammatical error.) So, my patient husband and I entered the dimly lit little dining room (just past that oyster bar) and took a seat in the empty dining room. On the way in, I noticed an essential oil diffuser running. I hoped it wasn't to mask the smell of anything.. like oysters? Ever the intrepid adventurers, we ordered a dozen Wellfleet oysters to start with. They had grit in them and weren't shucked properly. We found ourselves using the too-large teaspoon provided to dig the oysters out of their shells, as they hadn't been disconnected during the shucking. The horseradish was provided separately from the cocktail sauce, with me making a mess of things as I tried to mix it on the fly before putting a dollop onto my oysters. After the first I gave up and ate them unadorned. Sitting at the little table for two in the empty dining room, the oyster platter was taken away and the dirty little plates left behind. Our courses, which we ordered to share, were brought out and the dirty plates left. I placed mine on the empty table next to me and asked for a new plate. In the meantime, two courses were brought out and both would not fit on the table at the same time. Rather than pulling over another small table to double our space, the waiter placed our dish on the table next to us, a few feet away from where we were sitting. We finished our first course (carrots) and then swapped out the dishes, leaving the empty carrot plate on the other table and moving the corn dip over to our table. Awkward all around, and a problem that would have been easily addressed if they had just moved the little table next to the one we were sitting at. My dirty cocktail sauce plate was still sitting on the empty table on the other side of us when they brought us out deviled eggs. I never understand 5 deviled eggs on a plate for 2 people. 4 makes sense and 6 makes sense, but 5? What happens to the other half of an egg? Does the chef eat it? So, we had some decent carrots, a corn dip, panzanella salad and the eggs and everything was okay. The kitchen is shared with Stella Artisan restaurant next door. This little interesting space could be a really cool place, but their menu and service definitely need some work. Other reviews mentioned the rap music, and while I'm okay with it, do I really need to hear "m#therf#cker" and "d*ck in my mouth" as lyrics during a Friday night dinner? Probably not. read more

We had a reservation for early in the evening which was smart because this place got packed for a Thursday night. While sitting in a curved booth we sipped our wine and enjoyed listening to a mix of some classic hip-hop tunes. Be prepared to bring your wine since it's BYOB. I never ever complain or post bad reviews of any business unless it's really terrible. Bad bar food at best. 4 items and a coke cost us $90. Lobster nachos were 4 chips with a piece of lobster covered in melted processed cheese. Bang bang shrimp were 4 single shrimp with a little sauce on a bed of shredded lettuce. The tuna tartare was very bland. The carrots were the best thing we ate. Would have been better going to Chilis. The quality of food was worse than that. This review is a really tough one for me, mainly because I've literally ranked this as top 5 dinning experiences of-all=time. I'm talking, G.O.A.T internationally, locally, hole in the wall, all the way through fine dinning experiences. The food, service, atmosphere (including the speak-easy type of gimmick it has), the service etc. They're also BYOB which I think balances out the pricey menu. Let's start off with the speak-easy aspect. First of all, it's pretty adorable. I think as a business/restaurant, it's a brilliant idea. You have a bunch of people interested in your restaurant by hearing about this "hidden gem" where you gotta get on "the list" to get in. They do allow walk-ins but you'll be waiting for a long time and it's not guaranteed. So those interested should really sign up online to receive an email in order to be put on a "list" because they have "no phones." Once you get the email a few weeks later that you have a reservation, it's hard to turn down. It's a self fulfilling prophecy for No.12 and to be quite honest with you, I LOVE IT. Kudos. Upon arrival at this little corner bakery around the corner, you are handed a business card with directions and a pass-code to the restaurant. I mean... how cool is that?! Now, ambiance; It's certainly different for the area. I love that the newer places popping up in Ridgewood have a NY city vibe to them. The place is super cozy and you walk into the fresh raw bar area, although quaint still impressive. The main dinning has dark green walls and aggressive patterned jungle-like wall paper. It's an interior designers dream delivery of vintage meets contemporary-modern. The lighting is gorgeous but dim and it truly gives you an exclusive vibe. Service; there aren't many servers and I have to hand it to Matt (our server), because they are given the responsibility to verbally tell the table the menu. That's right... No printed menus... So interesting, ain't it?! It's unlikely that all guests at the table can see the chalk board with the menu items on it so you just have to trust the person with the best view or trust your server and your memory! Matt might of even been the only server with runners... he didn't miss a beat regardless! Last but not least FOOD. First off, it's tapas style which is great because you get to try a lot of dishes. Well... well... WELL. The night started with one of the guests arriving with us telling us about the baked carrots. How we HAVE to try them... I'm not sure about all of you but, baked carrots? That's what we are raving about?... I was skeptical... Needless to say, we ordered the carrots. The server happened to mention that they were their "famous carrots." But how could these boring veggies stand up to the hype you ask? Well...slap my knee and call me CARROT TOP, they were BOMB! The short rib simply to die for, the Foie Gra was decadent and the most richest thing I've ever set my taste buds too. Their eggplant toast... their table shared bread....WHAT DO THEY DO WITH THESE THINGS?! Sprinkle unicorn dust on them?! I continue...The scallops were incredible, and their clam chowder fries, BOY-OH-BOY was my mouth happy. Should be named Number 3 because all of their plates are served in threes (3 meatballs, 3 ribs, 3 lamb pieces). Not good for double dates. The food was ok, but I expected to be blown away for the prices listed. We asked for 2 extra slices of bread, but they never came. We said we didn't want them anymore and saw on our check that they were going to charge us for 2 slices of toasted bread. I was speechless. The service was awkward and awful. When asked if the pasta sauce was red or white based, the server described it as "orange". The fried calamari was like they got the discard pile from a fish market and fried it with extra batter. The lamb and the clam fries were great, but the oysters were not separated from the muscle and didn't seem super fresh. We ordered 4 of each type of offered and they just haphazardly threw them on the tray without labeling or organizing them by type. The one positive is that this place is BYOB. So while drinking our large bottle of Yellowtail, I looked at the booth across from us and saw 2 inches of dirt/dust under the seats. It appears as though they have not swept or mopped since switching management. I can only imagine what the kitchen looks like. Our reservation was at 7pm. We ordered everything at once and the plates came out in a fast, but steady pace. A table of 3 people were sat for their 8:30pm reservation next to us. They asked where the amazing complimentary bread was. The server stated that they are under new management and have changed the menu and offerings. We heard this and decided to warn our fellow patrons of our wary tale. After placing their initial order, the server came back to tell them that the kitchen was closing and they would not be able to order more food. Why allow people to make 8:30-9pm reservations if your kitchen closes at 9pm?! There are so many better places to go in the area. Save yourselves the frustration and go somewhere else. read more

Was told about this place by friends that raved about it. They were so excited to bring us since learning it had re-opened. We arrived and were the only ones in the restaurant. Our server was somewhat awkward and very, very soft spoken. He informed us that the food was served tapas style, which was fine. Our friends told us the oyster selection was amazing the last time they were here (pre-Covid). We were told there were 4 different types available, so we ordered 4 of each type. They arrived on a large tray and when asked which ones were which, the server said he wasn't sure, the kitchen had just placed them randomly on the tray. The oysters did not seem very fresh and were pretty unremarkable overall. We ordered several plates to share..Baby back ribs, meatballs, lamb chops, buratta, fois gras & a carrot dish. As the plates began arriving, it was clear that the dishes were made to be shared by 3 people with each dish having 3 pieces of the food. This made it difficult for our party of 4 to share everything without having to cut things in half or just have someone miss out on something. The meatballs tasted plain. The ribs were ok, but were a bit over cooked. The buratta was also plain and served with an odd number of bread pieces. We asked for 2 more pieces, but they hadn't come by the time we finished. The fois gras served was such a small piece that would have not been enough for 1 person, let alone 4. It, like most of the food was pretty bland. The warm carrot dish was served with goat cheese and was actually very good. The lamb chops were cooked well and tasted ok. We ordered 2 more dishes, clam french fries and calamari. The clam fries were fine but the calamari was not very good. The pieces were incredibly tiny and were so heavily breaded, that any calamari taste was almost unnoticeable. We overheard a server tell another table that the restaurant was under new ownership, which explains the difference from their previous visit. Bottom line: so good I want to leave a bad review so I can get reservations when I want. Gluten line: very willing to accommodate and knowledgeable of their ingredients. Bottom line: the whole thing is more about the experience. From getting the reservation, to arriving and how well they play along with keeping it hush hush, getting the code and walking to the side door, to finally getting inside and feeling the very intimate atmosphere. A Fabulous dining experience! A great treat! We arrived at Stella at 5:30pm and checked on availability, we got a 6:00pm seating on a Friday night without a reservation. Got the door code, went in from the blue color side door.Greeted by Joe the Maitre d,he seated us at the table instead of at the oyster bar because of last minute cancellation, and told us to enjoy till 8:30pm before the next seating come in. I liked the intimate atmosphere, music can be a notch lower in volume. Emily was our sweet attentive server of the evening. Read off every single items on menu board ( they don't have printed menu) Every dish comes out in a timely manner. The piping hot bread was baked in its own little dish, my husband can't stop eating it, finished the whole thing, and end up eating only part of his lamb chop entree. We shared scallops with curry sauce, and Foie Gras fried rice, two delicious amazing dishes!!! If this is on the daily menu, it's a MUST have!! It is crazy. Called the place 3 weeks ago, was told they are open and the wait time is about 20 min. We showed up there and place looked deserted, so we landed elsewhere. Today for some reason I came across the place on Yelp and decided to dial. Got on a pleasant guy calling another restaurant's name - Stella. So I asked him about discrepancy. Apparently, the new owner took over a month ago and postponed the reopening. Do you think it would be fair to your potential customers to have at least something on the web site, Yelp or at least clear VM announcing the circumstances? Ill start by saying No.12 was, indeed, quite speakeasyish, in that it was quite difficult to find the actual entrance. Once inside, the decor and ambience is quite appropriate and cozy for what they are trying to achieve. Now, onto the food. We ordered 7 dishes for 4 people. Absolutely an appropriate amount of food. The variety was fantastic but the actual food was average to subpar. I've never eaten such poorly prepared chicken at a restaurant. The Chefs really care about the food and how it is presented. The theme is so fun, it's a speakeasy restaurant. You check in next door, given a card with directions and how to enter to dine. Where do I even start! From the outside. So I love the cool speakeasy vibe where the main entrance is hidden in an alley and you need a special door code to enter. Something totally different and unique for Ridgewood. Upon entering I was greeted by Zaid, he welcomed us in, was super police, warm and friendly! The lighting, decor, and music fit the vibe perfectly for the speakeasy theme. Definitely works for a first date spot as well if you kinda wanna take your date to an intimate spot. To the food, I really liked a bunch of things on the menu so tried about 10 items. The plates are tapas style so they are great for sharing. We had the claim chowder fries, oysters on the half shell, ceviche, grilled oysters, scallops, foie Gras, octopus, and honey glazed carrots. For dessert we had the beignet which was perfectly crafted. Everything was delicious! My favorites were the octopus, scallops, and beignet. Lastly the service by Zaid was top notch! Omg!! The wait for a reservation was so worth it that I don't even know where to begin. We drove an hour to come eat here and the experience, service and food were all fantastic. Let me start off by saying that this is BYOB and there's a wine store 2 mins from this location. So to start off, the hot bread and butter is sssooo good. It's hard not to eat it all by yourself. We had the seafood tower for two. It came with 6 oysters, 4 shrimps, crab meat, and lobster tail. The seafood was so fresh and honestly I would come here just for the raw bar. It's exactly what you want your fresh seafood to taste like. The server came and went through the whole menu with detail and since this is tapas style, we order a few items for sharing. We started off with the Humboldt fog toast which is a goats milk cheese dip with mushrooms and pieces of toast on the side. Sounds simple? Trust me, it's not! Next was the fave (shockingly) of the night. Foie gras with apple and brioche. Wow! It's undeniably the best thing I've ever tasted. It melts in your mouth and there's just a burst of flavor. Amazing. Then we had clam chowder fries. Yes, you're reading that right. Clam chowder on fries. And they add crispy crumbles of bacon on top. Next, we had the nutty pig which is 4 pieces of pork loins sitting on a tasty flavorful sauce. The meat is super tender and the outside of it was nice and crispy. It was cooked to perfection. This is a small cozy space around the corner from Stella. The blue door is the entrance and normally they give you a secret code to get in, but the keypad was broken last night. It was our first time and a bit overwhelming but our waiter helped us out. While they do offer wine for purchase it is also byob. The oyster/seafood bar is a bit complicated so pay attention to your waiter, ask questions, especially about the price ahead of time. We skipped it. The small plates are good for sharing and we ordered 18 total for a group of 6 which was more than enough for everyone. The group favorites included the Duck Duck Goose, scallops, and market price pasta. We wouldn't get the short rib again. It was a great atmosphere to hang out with friends and family. read more

Okay I'm have to do this in bullet points other wise I'll write a novel - the owner Ziad was so accommodating, receptive, fun, enthusiastic, and warming -server Giuliana was very attentive, young yet driven. As someone who started working at a young age I applaud her want to develop work ethic, that will take her in life. - The ambience, first off the music nothing but old school hip hop and r&b mixed with the dim lighting sets the mood just right - THE FOOD we tried 7 items I have not one complaint or recommendation other than try it all! 10/10 highly recommend Can't wait to come back read more

We had a memorable meal this past weekend at No-12, a tapas style restaurant. Unfortunately, the experience was memorable for all the wrong reasons. Warning signs came early and quickly. Our server was unable to answer the questions on dishes that the menu indicated we should inquire about (what fish is the ceviche from, information about the oysters, and we learned that the special pasta is "rigatoni"). We ordered the tuna tartare, half-dozen oysters, the bang-bang shrimp, clam chowder fries, the spicy mussels and the sweet ricotta toast. Sadly, each dish suffered from a profound lack of imagination in its execution which then combined with an air of cheapness that permeated each plate. I definitely have never been to an upscale restaurant with such bad presentation skills. With just a little thought and care these dishes could be made so much better but the restaurant manages to create simple dishes in all the wrong way. Unnecessary extras distract from the average at best main ingredients. No-12 should focus more on the stars of each dish instead of, for example adding raw cucumber slices or beds of shredded lettuce to a plate. Presentation like this is reminiscent of concession stands at the zoo or a bar at a railway station, not a fine dining establishment. No-12 does have some things going for it. The atmosphere is great, the old school continental charm for some reason combined perfectly with the turn-of the millennium R&B and old school rap for a hip vibe. Regrettably this can't make up the substandard food combined with not even the servers knowing what's being served. One leaves with a feeling that this establishment would be a ripe candidate for one of those TV shows where they rescue a restaurant. In case the owners read this review please find my detailed feedback and recommendation on each dish below. Staff knowledge enhancements are needed without saying of course as well and would go a long way in alleviating in what was overall a truly abysmal experience. Tuna tartare: Reeks of cheapness with the raw cut cucumbers on the bottom and the tartare that feels pre-made at a Whole Foods or Wegmans. Ditch the cucumbers, switch the plate for a bowl, create a slightly more interesting tartare mix and garnish with some micro herbs and a more interesting sauce. Oysters: Decent enough but not excellent. The ketchup was a weird accoutrement and the horseradish was so dry that it was almost powdery. Not sure what advice to give here. Bang Bang Shrimp: Get rid of the bed of shredded lettuce unless you're deliberately going for the cafeteria feel. Use fewer but larger shrimp and enhance the presentation by making a design on it w/ the spicy mayo and a putting a few green micro herbs on the plate. Clam Chowder Fries: Great concept, probably my favorite dish. Unfortunately seems to combine canned clam chowder and frozen fries but the concept is solid. Fry the fries crispier so they hide the paste like "qualities" of the potatoes if you stick to frozen. Spicy Mussels: Ok at best. Weird combination of white wine and red sauce, which even with a considerable spicy punch ends up being bland and blatantly uninteresting. Ricotta Toast: I'd recommend that the bread be toasted. Other than that, the ingredients were good quality but let's face it, when it comes down to it, this dish is something that can be made at home in minutes and doesn't necessarily qualify as cooking. Still can be amazing and has its place on menus if executed well, but with without good quality bread that is just impossible. There are great restaurants in Ridgewood such as Delhi Accent, Pearl, Felina, and Park West Tavern but No. 12 is definitely not one of them! read more

This place "Rocks". Secret passcodes and a "find the side door" entrance to this funky new place. Oyster bar and chefs table style meal, hipster staff and cool music fills the air. Went with three couples, perfect size for a both, all whom love to cook, dine and drink literally tried the entire menu minus foie gras. Foods amazing, plentiful with some familiar tastes some and very unique new combos of flavors. You will not leave hungry or without wanting to ask how something was made. Like most if Ridgewood BYOB. Fun vibe and great hosts. You won't be disappointed. read more

My fiancé made reservations about 3 weeks ago for us to have dinner at this place! The restaurant was located in a Really cute downtown part of Ridgewood. They don't have a steady menu as their menu is seasonal. The service was great and our server was very knowledgeable of everything we asked him. We enjoyed the food but I guess we expected better since we had to wait 3 weeks for a reservation. The food wasn't bad, it's just that our taste buds weren't necessarily dancing or celebrating.
