I love Houston's. Always have and always will be. But we're breaking up girl for a while. Backing up a second I've got to underline Houston's (or Hillstone) was always my benchmark for really good, non fancy meals. Burgers, prime rib, fish, ribs ...you name it were consistently done well. Slightly premium price points but with great service it was on point. I've tried on and off to get a rez last two years without success but we hit it on Easter. As always a solid meal. Started with outstanding grilled artichokes that were first class. I convinced my partner to try pan Asian noodle salad with bbq pork ($32 but it used to be served with steak). I used to love the prime rib which isn't listed on menu anymore (a center cut filet goes for $62). Missing that rib dish I went for the ribs instead which were terrific but pricey ($45). We shared key lime pie which was yummy but served too warm. Water not refilled at all during meal. I will always love Houston's but that craving is gone. The price point for a basic good meal for two was $150 which is outside my lane. read more

Houston's is always a staple and Very solid! They rarely mess up any meal, it's always tasty and thoughtfully prepared by the chefs. I hate the wait- most of the time. But it's worth it ! The food- my house made vegetable burger never disappoints. Try it with the bbq sauce. Big and filling. Kale salad with no cheese is Amazing! There's a hint of peanuts in the salad that gives it a nice crunch! But that fresh fish - wow ! Today it was trout. Delicious and you should eat the skin! You can taste the charbroil. On the fish and the burger. I can't wait to return! Lunch time after 2:30 is the best time to get in. I will definitely recommend Houston's ... it's very consistent! I really love it here and have been coming here for many years now (probably more than 15 years by now). I am particularly partial to the steaks and the smoked salmon appetizer. Definitely come here. After we bought drinks at the bar and sat by the entryway she was obviously talking to us to the hostesses because the minute she started talking they both stared at our party. I rarely ever write reviews but in this case...I had to speak on this one. I frequent Houston's in Bergen County NJ a lot BUT, this time...took me by Surprise. The food was good! 5 star for the food. However, my bill came $186.59, I added $15 tip - total $201.59, a young man with a Chef jacket on comes over to my table to tell me that I did not leave a tip that is in accordance with the restaurants "Standards"!!! Huhhhh... I could not Believe IT. I said, well she did her job, but she was not Oustanding, she was not very talkative and she didn't even crack a smile. I said, well I left a tip that I felt was good enough. He kept asking me if there was an issue, I said No. He said well if you would like to continue to frequent this restaurant, we have "Standards" of 10-20% tip. I told him well, I am not giving any more of a tip. HIS unprofessional behavior left a terrible blemish on this restaurant. A Tip is a Courtesy that the patrons should be able to control. Had dinner here last night and I must highly recommend this place! April our server was just the best! Menu and ambiance just awesome! Great jazz in the background. Had the spinach & avocado dip, Caesar salad, salmon with broccoli-truly a delight. My son-in-law introduced us to Sam-the Gen.Mgr. who's hospitality is impeccable. My friend always raves about this place and I was excited to give it a try. I made reservations online and they made me add my credit card just in case I didn't show, they would charge me $50. When I arrived I was lucky to fine a parking spot nearby. The restaurant is located in a busy mall and restaurant area. When I walked in I was greeted and my friend gave my name. We were seated shortly after. We were served by Daniel and he was so nice and attentive. For drinks I got the margarita and it was so tasty, just like candy. For my entrée I got the chicken and my friend got the Hawaiian rib eye. When the food came out it looked great. I tasted my friend's steak and boy was it delicious. My chicken wasn't bad. As I ate I noticed pink in parts of the chicken to the point I couldn't eat it all. Daniel apologized and said they can cook it more. At that point I didn't want anymore and Daniel said they would take it off the bill, which was really nice. For dessert I ordered the key lime pie and it was very tasty. They could of done without the whipped cream becauae it had no taste. The bill came to a little over $120. All in all I had a good experience and will return. read more

Consistants good and fresh menu. Everything from the salads to the salmon are excellent but the French dip steaks the show. So good!

This is a place my wife and I choose for almost every special occasion. It's beautiful inside (in spite of their location inside a mall), it's dimly lit, the booths are these huge leather things that hug you nice and cosy. The service is world class - every single server knows their job, the menu and exactly how to treat customers. They even bring out a second ice-cold glass to freshen up your martini half way through so it stays super cold until the last drop. The food is just completely out of control. We always start with Shrimp cocktail (the best ever) and the spinach artichoke dip (they bring out more warm chips after you finish the first small portion). My wife always orders the French Dip which is the best I've ever had - and I've become addicted to the Ribs. Every single rib falls right off the bone and they're served with shoestring fries and cole slaw. Mixing the three flavors together makes for an insanely delicious bite every time. Highly recommend making a reservation because even though they take walk-ins - you will wait an hour or more because they're always super busy. Grab a seat at the bar if you can - but even that approach will have you waiting a while so plan ahead. Love this place. So much. read more

I will never go back here. I had a reservation for my daughter's birthday for Friday night at 5:45 pm for 4 people. I showed up with 4 adults and a 1 year old baby that was going to sit in our laps. They absolutely refused to seat us at one table claiming that "the restaurant's policy from Friday - Sunday is not to accommodate 5 people at any table in the restaurant and they count a baby as a person". I even spoke to the manager and she said the baby counts and would not seat us at one table. She insisted we sit at 2 separate tables - so much for celebrating my daughter's birthday. We only stayed because it was a Friday night and would not get seated elsewhere without a reservation. I never heard of such a crazy rule - they did not need to make any accommodations for the baby - she was going to sit on our laps and we had food for her (so the waitress/kitchen was not going to have to do any extra work). If a restaurant has such a crazy rule they should post that when you are making your reservation. The manager just kept saying - we can't accommodate you at one table even though you had a reservation. I filled out Houston's survey that I received after our meal and they never even reached out to me - so much for customer service. read more

Visited 12/06/23 Had to stop by for a late lunch while doing a little Christmas shopping. We've been fans of Houston's for many many years and without exception, they never disappoint. (Well, except that their "famous" couscous salad is no longer on the menu.) Their menu has changed and we were lucky to get their grilled marinated artichokes that are only a seasonal dish. These were terrific and the Mrs. has 'notified me' that I need to make these at home. lol Anyway, my wife ordered the "'ll Have the Chicken" (wood-fired rotisserie chicken with crushed herbs & apricot glaze, with tabbouleh) dish which was very good. Nice to find a restaurant that doesn't overcook the chicken. I ordered the Thai noodles salad... with bbq pork which was very very good, but I'm going to have to try their Sashimi Tuna Salad next time... looked so good sitting on the counter. If I have one complaint... the lighting could be turned up jussssst a little. Maybe I'm gettin' old (ok, I am) but it is dark in there. I never feel the need to write a bad review but I had to come on here to say that my experience last night was awful. I was getting dinner with my husband and the manager, I believe her name is Catherine from what I overheard, started yelling at the table next to me. I listened to the entire conversation, and what I heard was appalling from the management side. From my end it looked like the manager called security because they sat at the table for too long. She had an attitude to these nice ladies who just seemed like they wanted to enjoy their night and get desert. If you are in the service industry you should never treat people this way. I will not be coming back here for this reason. It ruined our dinner because of how aggressive she was. Houston's do better! read more

I made reservations for 4 and 1 child, they wouldn't seat us even though the child is so small she can sit on any of the adults laps literally (and the tables/booth would have more than enough space anyway). Driving home for Christmas. The teal blue glow from Route 4 doesn't look like much but once you're inside of Houston's, the restaurant is crackling like bacon in a pan with guests packed into the booths and bar. The staff were all super nice, we waited roughly an hour and 15 minutes for our table since they don't take reservations. We walked around the mall to kill the time and stretch our legs, there's plenty of couches inside the Mall's sleepy luxury corridors. Our server was polite and super diligent, our perfect blue cheese stuffed olive martini's arrived swiftly along with two glasses of red wine. We started with a piping hot ooey gooey spinach-artichoke dip. The mango salsa side was a nice addition to the plate and all served with tortillas. Next, they brought out the flavored ketchup and some spicy-ish smoke infused mayo which all tasted amazing. Our entrees consisted of the Steak Thai Salad, two types of Burger which were California and Regular, and last the smoked baby back ribs. All of our meals danced on our pallets like whirling dervishes, providing a much needed break from the mundane year end work loads and holiday packed events. It was great to enjoy each entree ordered to perfection with piping hot prowess. My fully loaded baked potato carried Haleakalā molten cheese heat. Went to Houston's on a Thursday night and thank god we made reservations because it was packed. To start we got spinach and artichoke dip which was very good! For my entree I got the French Dip Au Jus which I was obsessed with I winded up ordering another one to go for my boyfriend because it was so good. And I think my friend got the chicken sandwich sliders and she really enjoyed that too! Our server was super sweet and patient with us! It saddens me to write this review since it's been one of my favorite restaurants for several years. Came here for lunch and the place was packed which is always a good sign. We usually order the NY Strip special that is not on the menu. Also ordered the smoked salmon and decided to try the FRENCH DIP AU JUS sandwich. The salmon was frozen, usually it flakes when you cut into it, this time you could still see the chill on the skin. The steak was burnt...to the point of eating charcoal. This was a huge disappointment since their steak is always on point. Bottom line the steak was frozen and didn't have enough time to thawed before it was cooked. The best part was the sandwich. The worst part is the steak was $70 and the sandwich was around 20 something. It's really a shame when a place like this goes down hill. read more

For a place that is subpar and known for over priced burgers they should focus on training their staff. Teach them how to smile and greet people when they walk in. Also when someone calls and asks when the last seating is and we arrive there on time only to be told that it's reservations only on a Monday is pretty unprofessional.. It would have been beneficial if that information was relayed to their customers prior to wasting their time driving to the restaurant and be shooed away with an attitude. Decided to dine here for dinner last night with my husband. We used to come here years ago, but did have one experience where our server was absolutely horrible to us. We decided to give it another shot because the food/drink here is absolutely amazing! I also want to say for some reason, their water tastes really good as well (wonder what it is that makes it so good lol). We started off with the smoked salmon appetizer (also highly recommend their spinach dip), which paired nicely with the Jackrabbit cocktail i ordered. For entree, i had the chicken (they named it "i'll have the chicken" which added a little humor) and my husband had a burger. Both were delicious! The server was super generous - we're really glad he was attentive and served us appropriately. Overall, i give this place an A+ and would highly recommend! They do have somewhat of a dress code, so i suggest you don't come in sweatpants lol i would say this place provides the best ambiance for a date night :) read more

I'd give it "0" if I could! Wanted to order a take out for my daughter's bday. She's battling cancer and cannot dine in because she's neutropenic. We were flat out told " no exceptions" can be made by the most rudest, inconsiderate manager. When I told him I'm shocked by his response and asked why he couldn't make this 1 exception, he told me the call was being RECORDED, have a nice day and hung up!!! I wish I could give at least 10 stars! We've been to this restaurant sooo many times - each time better than the next. Tonight topped them all. Dinner was excellent. Jacob, our server, was attentive without being intrusive. His smile and courtesy were wonderful. Food was perfect, as usual! My husband is battling cancer and was wearing a baseball cap due to the effects of chemo on his hair. The hostess politely explained their policy is no hats in the dining room - which we totally respect - and which is why we went on a Tuesday and not a Friday or weekend. When we explained why my husband was wearing one, she politely said "that's fine". They were so kind about it, including Luke, the manager, who wished my husband well. I thoroughly enjoyed visiting this place. Despite being located at a mall style property it's a really nice restaurant inside with an ambience a bit better than super casual. They even have a notice that if you insist on playing with your phone at the table they'll happily wait until you are ready to order and put your phone away. Love that! Haha! Food was really good and presentation was beautiful. I got a burger and fries with a beer on the side and it was all yummy! I came here with my parents cute chic place, we were told there was a wait of 20 minutes for a table and we didn't wait more than 5 minutes which was excellent. Professional staff, we had an extremely polite and professional waitress Gina, very accommodating and always with a smile. Hard to find places that provide great service. We had the artichoke dip which we loved and a New Orleans soup that had sausage rice and beans delicious portions are perfect was able to share. As our main we had the burger with the choice of either fries, coleslaw or tabulé. We got the classic burger great burger delicious, my father ordered the California burger with coleslaw which he enjoyed the waitress was nice enough to get him some jalapeños, and we ordered the buttermilk fried chicken sandwich that was so delicious. But for the finish, the summer classics of Key Lime pie and Hot Fudge Sundae YUM! As for the service, 20 out of 10. We were served by Trey, who I will say hit every mark in attentive, knowledgeable, humorous, unobtrusive and genuine service. He is a star! Decor is airy, dark and sexy. Review for Houston's at Riverside Mall, New Jersey - May 1st at 4:00 PM We were extremely disappointed with the service we received at Houston's at Riverside Mall on May 1st. I had made a reservation over a month and a half ago for my son's 15th birthday and my 52nd birthday--a special day for our family. Our party included five adults and my two-month-old granddaughter. Upon arrival, we were told that we could not be seated because our party "exceeded the limit"--apparently due to the infant being counted as an additional guest. Never in our experiences dining out--at numerous fine dining restaurants--have we encountered a policy where an infant in a carrier is counted as a full guest, especially without prior notice or any accommodation. Instead of handling the situation with grace or empathy, the manager insisted that her staff had informed us of this policy. If that were the case, why would we have shown up on my actual birthday with our entire family ready to celebrate? The manager's attitude was dismissive and unapologetic. Her demeanor came off as though we were free to leave rather than welcome to stay, which was incredibly disheartening on what was supposed to be a joyful occasion. We understand that policies exist, but the lack of customer service, empathy, and basic hospitality we experienced was unacceptable. It was not about the policy--it was about how we were treated. The manager on duty between 4:00-4:30 PM showed no understanding or courtesy, which does not reflect the standard one would expect from a fine dining restaurant. We left deeply disappointed and upset, not because of the policy, but because of the poor customer service. Management should reconsider how they handle such situations and train their staff--especially leadership--to treat guests with respect and compassion. read more
