Hoek continues to churn out quality food. Dinner last night was excellent, with great service, and the outdoor seating was spot on despite the wind. We got lucky and were seated almost immediately with a table for five upon arrival. Highly recommend it not only for the food, but also for the walk afterward. Nearby Louis Valentino Park and Pier offers fantastic views and great photo opportunities, with skyline views of Manhattan and Lady Liberty in the distance. As a bonus for bird lovers, you can catch flybys of Great Black-backed, Herring, and Ring-billed Gulls, along with Mallards, Common Terns, and other birds around the waterfront. read more

Ridiculous up-charging I have never ever experienced at any other pizza place. We ordered a 1/2 and 1/2, they did the normal and acceptable thing of charging for the more expensive half. But then they charged us an additional surcharge of $4.50 on top of that. Wow the ambiance and food were on point. The view of skyline is gorgeous. Outdoor eating was perfect. Music was nice and calming. The sopresatta pizza was on the larger side and absolutely one of the best I've had. Spicy and delicious. The basil on top elevated it. Servers were cool. I've now been to Hoek three times, which is: 1. Enough times that I believe I've eaten almost everything on the menu. 2. Not enough times considering how much I love it, and that it's been here for years. I can report that the menu is tight, and amazing. The pizza is obviously the main draw, and any combination they have (or that you can dream up) is delicious. I have friends who weren't into the gorgonzola/potato pie, or thought that the anchovies were too strong on the pie with capers and olives...I'm into all of it. I'm into every single pizza they have. That said, do not sleep on the specials. Right now it's tomato season, and the jersey tomato bruschetta is ridiculously tasty. The stracciatella they serve alongside a big ball of pizza crust? Incredible. I also love that their sandwiches are also on top of pizza crust, and the porchetta is BANANAS. Salads are also good if you're into that sort of thing. I like the radicchio/avocado/pistachio situation. And the cocktails are surprisingly high quality, even if we keep drinking wine for the ease of it. What's even better about all this amazing food is that their service is super accommodating with the absurdly large group I keep showing up with, AND you get to eat it all on the airy patio right off a cobblestoned Red Hook street. One of the nicest outdoor tables in Brooklyn, truly. After you stuff your faces in the sunshine, you can take your stupid kids over to the Valentino Pier while the sun sets, and realize life isn't so bad. Don't let them play on the little beach over there though, that sand is toxic because of the runoff from the Gowanus canal. read more

I live right around the corner from this restaurant and I love eating out. I'm very sorry that I would never eat here. I was walking to the pier to see the beautiful sunset and I stopped at this restaurant to take a look at the menu and the food is absurdly overpriced. Mere sandwiches are more than $25.00 and the pizzas are way up into the 20s. These prices were created for wealthy people coming into the neighborhood from Manhattan. I think it would have been nice to offer food that the people in this neighborhood could afford not necessarily cheap, but food a little bit more reasonably priced. There are certain restaurants coming into this working class neighborhood that feel to me like interlopers and this is one of them. read more

Had a very unfortunate experience here on Mother's Day with my daughter and her 8 week old and visiting in- laws. Three of us are elderly and then the baby is on the opposite end of the age spectrum and yet we were the group sitting in the blaring sun and under the very loud speaker which they refused to turn down. apparently the music outdoors needs to be really loud so the people inside can hear. Nevermind that the venue across the street had some sort of live music going on. The food and drinks were good, service was bad except for the one helpful waiter I tackled because I hadn't seen ours for quite awhile. This bad experience cost us $200 + dollars which, even to this experienced New Yorker, is unacceptable which is why I wrote this review. read more

Absolutely delicious and unique. We went here dressed in our Halloween costumes after the Barnacle parade and sat outside. It was pretty mild out and we always prefer to sit outside if we can. I've never been here but it's right down the street from my daughter and she and the family have been here and had pizza from here several times. My daughter Jane ordered several pizzas. There were six of us and I believe she ordered seven or eight pizzas. I thought it was extreme until they were served and I tried one. I should've remembered it was that beautiful thin crust New York pizza. You can certainly more than that then other pizzas. The toppings were fresh and delicious and so unique. A nice little Brooklyn excursion: get some bikes and ride out to Hoek for some pies and Italian soda. If you ask, they might have chinotto, my new favorite soft drink, made with bitter orange. The pizza is high temperature southern Italian, not the New York standard. The dough is chewy and delicious. The toppings fresh. Overall well executed. Service was decent. Staff is generally amiable. But Hoek stands out as not only amazing pizza, but an incredible Al fresco experience around the corner from Valentino pier (best Brooklyn views of lady liberty). Try the specials if they have any (the liquified cheese with a freshly baked pizza crust to tear and dip is to die for. Literally just went here and understandable it's a sunny Sunday afternoon so business is busy. The outdoor patio area is a hot commodity, so I made the hostess aware an inside table or bar spot would suffice If it would be easier for them. Walked me over to the bar ( which bartender/ waitress in line ) and sat me down with a menu. I wait 15 minutes and the bartender finally asks me if I would like a drink which I ever so slowly drank in order to have an excuse to wait until someone took my food order. Nothing. 30 minutes pass and no request to see if I'd like something to eat. I start rotating my credit card in my hand because at this point im skipping the food. 5 minutes later and I lose patience asking to pay for my drink. Food was decent but nothing standout - calabrese pizza was a little wet and floppy in the center but overall good taste. Fiance liked his anchovy pie. The service is where things get bad fast. It was clearly busy when we got there and they said if we didnt want to wait we could do carry out and sit outside. Asked if we could sit at the bar while waiting for a table and then we were told no, seemed odd so we mulled over carry out vs waiting. When we decided we'd wait for a table and asked again at this point 5 minutes waiting at the bar was allowed. Ordered drinks at the bar and the table was ready faster than expected which was nice, however once we ordered it took a full hour before we received our food. We were already done with our second round of drinks when one of our two pizzas was brought out, and instead of asking if we wanted to place an order for a last round of drinks to go with the meal they brought the second pie and 2 minutes later the check without asking if we were ready. One round of drinks was comped without us asking but it would have been nice if they didnt ignore us the entire time at our table and then assume we didnt want to order a wine and beer to enjoy with our food once it was finally out. Not worth the hassle and probably wouldnt go back by my own choice. read more

Great food. Great service. The nicest place to visit! I've been here a few times and each time has been great. The pizzas-I'm a purist when it comes to pizza- are fantastic. While we only order the margarita, I believe all the other choices are perfect. The salads add to the greatness. And one person in our group had a meatball sandwich which he said was the most satisfying. The staff here are so kind and attentive. Wow!!!! Found this establishment on Yelp, and I'm sooo glad I did. The brick oven pizza was so scrumptious. There are many varieties and you can also add on. We tried the ricotta/ honey bruschetta and it was heavenly, bread was perfectly crusty and the ricotta/honey mix was slightly sweet and a lil savory. They have a full bar and wonderful outdoor seating with a view of the city,indoor seating is chic, and well spaced, service was on point and our server was friendly, warm, efficient, and checked on us often. All safety protocols are in order and before we were taken to a table we had to show our proof of vaccine, which made me so happy! read more

What a great new addition to Red Hook. It's tucked away back on the back streets of the neighboorhood, and if you don't stroll of Van Brunt, you'll never find it. The atmosphere is great, located inside a restored brick warehouse. The establishment is separated into two sections: the sit-down area and the cocktail bar. The cocktail bar boasts a menu of signature cocktails accompanied by dark leather couches and a warm vibe. Getting to the food. It's spectacular. We had an order of the (seasonal) Jersey Tomato and Garlic Bruschetta and the Sopressatta and Fior di Latte Pizza. The Bruschetta was everything you would want: ripe, sweet, local tomatoes, chewy rustic bread, coarse salt and pepper, and a drizzle of fruity olive oil. The pizza is roman style, super thin, subtly crispy, but still bouncy and light, straight from the brick oven. Each piece of soppressata on top was nice and crispy, the tomato acidic and sweet, and the fior di latte juicy and milky. You can tell they care about the ingredients they use here. Everything is super fresh, and you can taste the love. To top it off, the owner was wonderful. She came over at the end of our great meal and gave us a great glass of Frascati to try. It was impeccable and she even taught us about the DOCG wine certification that is the highest certification of wine in Italy. I see this becoming a great neighborhood spot for us and can't wait to return. read more
