Eating pizza with the dead has never been so... interesting. A pizzeria across the street from Greenwood Cemetery? Not a new concept. In fact, I have been to another pizzeria not too far from this one that does slices (and overall better job) compared to this one. That is not to suggest the pizza is terrible, or lackluster. It is not. The pizza is supremely adequate for what you are offered, even though I did get sticker shock from some of the things they offer. Maybe that is why they are located near the cemetery, just in case (kidding). I first tried the meatballs, you get two to an order with a side of two pieces of Italian bread. Smart move. That allowed me to enjoy the burrata and red sauce it comes with after eating the meatballs. The meatballs are softball sized, and have plenty of flavor. They do not fall apart easily, and the sauce is nice and mellow, with a slight acid taste to it. Then came the pizza. I ordered two, a red (Classic New Yorker) and a white (Quattro Formaggi). Both pies come out piping hot, which means the pizza is still cooking as it stays on the pan. I made a mistake by eating one too fast and it all fell apart in my hand. Once it cooled, I took the time to enjoy as much of both pies as I could. The red pie has a nice crispy crust, and a good salty cheese. Unfortunately the sauce is a bit too sweet and a large part of the crust is overcooked, so I could not eat that part. It is solid but with no wow factor. The white pie has an overpowering Gorgonzola flavor. It overtakes the rest of the pie, which is unfortunate because it has show much potential when the Gorgonzola takes a back seat. It also was a bit messy as each bite had some overcooked cheese on my hand. This one was not overcooked, but to balance out the saltiness of the cheeses, I suggest something like green apples, or even figs to make it a more balanced pie. Only be careful because too much can tilt the balance of power, something you do not want to do. I also felt the service was adequate, as the wait staff was cute and amenable. They were definitely working hard. As for the pizza, it belongs in the land of the living, but it needs a little more time to rise and conquer, rather than be buried and become compost alongside the dead. So I read Justin's review and decided to come here because I thought it was a pure cauliflower pizza, but I tested my glucose after one hour and it was sky high at 187. If it was purely cauliflower my sugar wouldn't have spiked like that, so I'm rather disappointed. The service was excellent but I was shocked at how high my glucose level was and felt misled by the review and also the staff. I wouldn't expect the staff to really know how to handle my health issues but I did ask if the cauliflower crust is made with flour or anything and I recall she said it wasn't. I'm really frustrated. My partner ordered the prosciutto sandwich and he didn't particularly enjoy it but that's personal preference and neither of us enjoyed the meatball. If my blood sugar didn't spike like that I would have given higher marks. read more

Food: This is a hidden gem in Sunset Park/South Slope that more people need to try! We tried the chicken parmesan plate, pizza (half margherita and half pepperoni with hot honey), and the calzone. All three were amazing and so impressive. The chicken parmesan was moist and flavorful; their sauce is very tasty. The pizza had a thin crust and nice char on the bottom and is definitely above average pizza in NYC. The calzone was huge and packed with ricotta and mozzarella cheese served with fresh basil and tomato sauce on the side. I can't wait to go back to try other dishes as well as their other specialty pizzas. Service: Service was phenomenal; staff were friendly and very attentive! Ambiance: The restaurant is pretty small with about 10-12 small tables. The place can probably accommodate only two large groups at a time by putting tables together. Whenever we would visit the Gravesend cemetery, we would see this pizzeria and always said that we would try it because it looked like a quaint little place and those usually have the best pizzas. We finally tried it and it met our expectations. We went on a Friday around 5pm and it was empty so we chose a table by the window so we could soak up the sun. The place seems small from the outside but it is big enough for families to dine-in. The waitress was attentive and provided menus for us right away. We ordered the Margherita pizza and it was exquisite. Not too toasted and the cheese and sauce was a combined taste of heaven. I love that they have the Italian sodas so I ordered a blood orange one. The pizza holds up well for delivery. What brings it over the top is the fact that people with complex dietary restrictions can eat their pizza! My wife has allergies not only to wheat and dairy, but also rice, which is often used in gluten-free crusts (even cauliflower crust). Astarita's cauliflower crust is totally grain-free! The pizza is amazing, the service is friendly and the ambiance is warm and welcoming. We had the margarita pie. The crust had a good char with a nice balance of cheese and sauce.
